ork readiness is a key area of focus for Junior Achievement’s proven programs. By bringing volunteer role models from the community into the classroom to share their career experiences with students, JA introduces many young people to professions and career paths that they may not have been aware of otherwise. The JA experience is shown to heighten students’ understanding of the role education plays in their future success in the workforce. JA programs promote 21st Century Skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication, while helping students understand the importance of acquiring technical skills in math, science, coding, and composition. JA also helps students appreciate the need for higher education, whether it’s a four-year degree or a technical certification for a skilled trade. Locally, Junior Achievement connects over 5,000 students with over 250 community and business volunteers throughout Steele and Waseca Counties. Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna
In 1948, two medical pioneers — Dr. Albert J. Olson and Dr. Franklin C. Anderson — started the Owatonna Clinic on the principle that the physician serves the community both in the preservation and the restoration of good health. For the past 60-plus years, the clinic has grown from its original office on Main Street to its current location on the 26th Street. In 1997, the clinic joined Mayo Clinic Health System. In 2012, the Owatonna Clinic changed its name to Mayo Clinic Health System. The name change is part of a broader effort to bring even more of Mayo Clinic to patients locally. Mayo Clinic Health System has become a comprehensive medical clinic offering outpatient and specialty services. The staff includes a variety of specialty fields, including family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrician/gynecology, neurology, oncology, and cardiology. The clinic also offers comprehensive laboratory, diagnostic, pain management and infusion therapy services. Mayo Clinic Health System also offers a full-service optical shop. In addition to the clinic staff physicians, Mayo Clinic Outreach physician consultants come from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to provide patients with care in cardiology, oncology, rheumatology and neurology. Mayo also operates a facility at 405 E. Main in Blooming Prairie. From nursing to child development, professionals in health and human services bring their knowledge and expertise directly to the people they serve. They are both a lifeline and a boon to human beings of every age in all walks of life.

What is the MANE program? The MANE program is a collaborative, concept-based baccalaureate curriculum, based on a set of core competencies, intended to prepare graduates to provide care to individuals, families and communities in health promotion, acute or chronic illness, and at the end of life. This collaborative curriculum provides a seamless transition from associate to baccalaureate nursing education. Acceptance to the program allows for dual admission to Riverland Community College and a cooperating university, in this case Metropolitan State University, culminating in a baccalaureate degree. Total credits after attainment of AD 75 credits | Total credits after attainment of BSN = 120 credits
Nursing (RN Track)
The LPN to RN Track
Associate in Science (75 credits) This track is intended for students that do not have an LPN license. If admission requirements are met, students will start out in the traditional track in the MANE program for attainment of their nursing degree. Overall, job opportunities for registered nurses are expected to be good. However, the supply of new nurses entering the labor market has increased in recent years. This increase has resulted in competition for jobs in some areas of the country. Generally, registered nurses with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) will have better job prospects than those without one. Employers also may prefer candidates who have some related work experience.
This track is intended for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who want to become an RN. If admission requirements are met, LPNs will receive advanced standing in the MANE RN program and will be granted 5 credits towards the attainment of their nursing degree.
Nursing (LPN Track)
Diploma, 39 credits Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program will integrate general education, including science coursework, with the discipline of nursing coursework (PNUR) as the basis for nursing practice and ongoing lifelong learning.

Medical Assistant
Diploma, 36 Credits This one year diploma program is designed to prepare students for employment as Medical Assistants. Medical Assistants are allied health professionals who assist physicians in the ambulatory care setting and perform a variety of clinical, laboratory, and administrative tasks. The specific duties of a Medical Assistant may vary by location, specialty, and size of the medical practice. In small practices, Medical Assistants handle both administrative and clinical duties. Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area. Employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 23 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the

average for all occupations. The growth of the aging baby-boom population will continue to increase demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients. An increasing number of group practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities need support workers, particularly medical assistants, to complete both administrative and clinical duties. Medical assistants work mostly in primary care, a steadily growing sector of the healthcare industry. In addition, the number of individuals who have access to health insurance is expected to continue to increase because of federal health insurance reform, increasing patient access to medical care.
