FROM THE PUBLISHER S
pringtime is hard upon us, heading from south to north and bringing budding trees and blooming mesquite in its path here in Texas and, to our neighbors in the high country further north, a long anticipated snow melt. Speaking of the high country, this issue has two great stories from Montana-based writer and photographer Melissa Hemken: “Roundup Required” and “Let Them be Wild”. Here’s a quote from Melissa in her opening paragraph of the roundup piece: “In Wyoming’s heart is a high desert, its openness unsettling some and providing solace to others. The sagebrush seems to flow uninterrupted to the horizon, but its subtle contours require riding miles of rough country to locate grazing cattle in the plateau’s folds.” The story is a modern look at an age-old tradition, and chronicles the multi-ranch roundup in the “Big Pasture”, a nearly 100,000 acre U.S. Bureau of Land Management allotment grazed in common by five families. In her “Let Them be Wild,” Melissa examines the plight of the mustang and BLM sanctuaries like the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary north of Lander, Wyoming which is open for public tours. I love her quote from co-owner Denise Oldham: “If my Navajo grandpa was still alive, he would say, “You just let them be. It’s what those horses are supposed to be doing, being wild. Just let them be.” Her story brings to my mind the epic journey taken by my friend Jonny Fitzsimons and several friends who rode saddle broke mustangs from Mexico to Canada, but that’s a story for another day. We’re celebrating spring at Farm & Ranch Headquarters with a long awaited launch of our new website, farmandranch.com. Please give the site a visit and let us know what you think. Meanwhile we’ll keep doing what we love to do; helping our clients to bring you and our other readers world class ranches, just in case you need one for your own roundup!

THE HEART BEATS STRONG HERE with breathtaking settings secluded in one of the most scenic bends of the meandering Brazos River. Located in the rapidly growing, yet charming town of Fulshear, Texas is where you will discover the extraordinary natural beauty, that is Laprada Landing. Although just a reasonable drive to the Energy Corridor, the Galleria and downtown Houston, the fast pace of the Big City feels worlds away when immersed in the peaceful serenity of dense stands of majestic trees, colorful meadows and sweeping vista views overlooking the Brazos River. It is a place where imaginations run wild with unspoiled, natural beauty and where huge tracts of land offer a pristine piece of the rural Texas countryside; all without having to sacrifice the amenities of city living. Laprada Landing offers just 7- remaining Texas sized tracts of land ranging from 60 – 105 acres; each with its own panorama and unhindered views of the Brazos River. With varying tree coverage, each tract has its own unique character that sets it apart from the others. Prices start at $1.7 million. Laprada Landing is no ordinary piece of land though, it is a vital part of Texas’ rich history. The land dates back before Texas was a State to the celebrated group of Texas’ first settlers – known as the Old Three Hundred. Now, you too can own a part of history at Laprada Landing. Call today for more information on this exclusive opportunity.

For these ranch families, pulling out a wagon makes sense. By: Melissa Hemken
The roundup crew trailing the beef to Bog Basin.
In Wyoming’s heart is a high desert, its openness unsettling some and providing solace to others. The sagebrush seems to flow uninterrupted to the horizon, but its subtle contours require riding miles of rough country to locate grazing cattle hidden in the plateau’s folds. Perched at 6,335 feet in elevation is Jeffrey City, Wyoming (population 58). Across the highway, stretching north, is the “Big Pasture,” a nearly 100,000-acre U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) allotment grazed in common by five families—several of them since the late 1800s. The families’ ranches lie along the Sweetwater River, the pasture’s southern boundary. Their names flow as does the river: Leonardi, Dockery, Crofts, Corbett and Graham.
The Leonardis are the newcomers: first grazing the range in 1998. The Dockerys are descended from the Myers, who started grazing the Big Pasture range in 1875. The Crofts family homesteaded on the Sweetwater River in 1883, and nearly 100 years later (1982), Rob Crofts began riding roundup while courting his wife, Carla Whitlock, whose family came to the area in 1945. The Grahams arrived on the Sweetwater in 1891—one year after Wyoming statehood. Jack Corbett came as a cowboying teenager in 1953, purchasing his own ranch bordering the Big Pasture ten years later. Gathering cattle from the Big Pasture takes long days of riding behind buttes and looking down draws. To support the gathers, the families first pulled out a wagon in
1943 for spring and fall roundups. It takes about 12 days to gather the Big Pasture. The circles the cowboys ride to gather cattle radiating out from each cow camp. The Big Pasture is aptly named, as Zack Sanftner, the Crofts’ son-in-law, ironically noted of a day’s circle, “The good news is today all we have to do is ride to the skyline.” Every generation has their own ideas on how to manage the roundups. The springtime calf roundup is to brand calves and scatter bulls, and the beef roundup in the autumn pulls bulls, yearlings and other sale-ready cattle off the range. Some aspects of the roundups have changed, with new technologies and management ideas. But taking out a wagon to support the cowhands on roundup still proves to be the best way to manage gathering cattle in the high desert country. FarmAndRanch.com

The beef are trailed to the Bog Basin holding pen before the crew heads out to gather the next area.
Rooted in Tradition As families incorporate new technology into their own ranch management practices, they continually weigh whether new tools can improve the Big Pasture roundups, too. “Essentially, we do things the same way,” Jack Corbett says of roundup, “although we are more modern now with propane for the branding fire. On our ranch we’re even more modern than that, we freeze brand our cattle. But it will never happen on roundup, it’s too traditional!” Corbett has ridden the most years of any of today’s cowboys on the Big Pasture roundups, having only missed a handful since his arrival in 1953. When he began riding roundup, the wagon was a one-ton truck carrying the mess box and bedrolls. Meals were cooked in Dutch ovens over sagebrush fires, and a beef was butchered to feed the crew. Roundups now find him riding along side his son, Troy, and five grandsons. The wagon is an armadillolooking 24-foot camper, which was retrofitted for cow camp in 1968. Its vastly newer hauling truck sports a custom headache rack to hang the beef at night to cool in the night breezes. Wrapped in canvas during the day, the meat’s edibility proves meat storage doesn’t need modernity. 30 Volume 74 Farm&Ranch
Most of the families’ ranches border the Big Pasture, with turnout gates that open from their deeded land. The Leonardis must truck their cattle 50 miles from their deeded ranch near Lander, Wyoming. Bed rolls, teepees and gear are stowed in the trailer for moving to the next camp before heading for the day’s work.
“On the calf roundup we drive the cattle away from the ranch fences,” Corbett explains, “and situate them on top of Beaver Rim. We also scatter bulls and brand late calves.”
By mid-August, the cattle are working their way back toward the ranches down on the Sweetwater River. The September beef roundup gathers the yearlings to be marketed, along with the bulls and saleready cows. These cattle are moved into the river section for a couple of weeks before the families gather them and sort according to ranch. During the last week of October, the families gather the remaining cattle—the cows to winter pasture and calves to feedlots. Marjorie Graham, who joined the Big Pasture range with her 1961 marriage, explains the final gather along the Sweetwater River. “Everybody starts from the ranches to push them together, often snow brings the cows home. We coordinate a couple days when everyone is gathering and sorting at once for the main sweep along the river meadows.”
Braden Larrew and Riley West set up their teepee at the Indian Springs camp.
After lunch, the crew saddles fresh mounts for riding the west section of Bog Basin. Riley West foreground.
Rich Graham pauses for water at the cook trailer while the cook, Bill Cowling, and Thad’s parents, Carol and Carl Dockery, look on.
One major change, now decades old, was fencing small holding enclosures at most of the Big Pasture’s cow camps. Before that it was the youngsters’ job to hold herd. “It was hard work to hold those cattle up because we had heel flies in those days,” Corbett recalls of his teen roundup years. “Those flies would put the scatter on the calves. There would
Changes Allowed Most agriculture increasingly integrates modern technology. The Big Pasture roundups use little of it. After dinner some cowboys may walk to a rise for cell phone service or listen to their son’s football game on the truck radio, but most relax near the wagon to visit, play cards or learn to twist wire into rein chains for bridles. “It’s all in how traditional you want to stay,” Corbett reflects. “I’ve always enjoyed roundup, looked forward to it. It’s a good learning experience for the young guys. They learn a lot just being around old-timers and observing how things get done.” James Gullion, a silversmith from Jeffrey City, makes rein chains in the evenings at cow camp.
“We make a point of having the young guys ride all circles,” adds Rob
Crofts about training the teenagers and 20-somethings in the younger generations. “They need to learn the land and where the cattle like to graze because one day they’ll be running it.” The quality of the Big Pasture range reflects the families’ care for the landscape. They manage the range to ensure it will ably sustain forage for cattle and wildlife for the long term. “The roundup is still fundamentally the same, as is the land,” Graham says proudly. “We ride the same circles, and set up cow camp in the same spots. The family generations have changed, but our traditions have not. “We still sort cattle according to the order of our places on the Sweetwater. The Leonardis are the furthest up river, then the Dockerys, Crofts, Corbetts and us [Graham].” While traditions are honored on the Big Pasture, change does come. “As any progression of life, the next generation has its own ideas—some good and some bad,” Graham matterof-factly observes. “But as the kids begin to take over their family’s ranch management, we will adjust and continue to work together to graze this land.”
be a kid and a calf going over every hill! “When we branded the calves we held them up outside, and there would be six to eight different brands. Whoever was roping had to mother the calves up so we knew how to brand them.” L-R: Deborah, Sam and Jeremiah hold the herd during sorting.
To do so, calves are followed to their mother cows to ascertain ownership and how to brand before roping and dragging the calves to the fire. “Back then the old-timers wouldn’t let us go to the fire until we were 20 years old. We used to say you couldn’t even go get a drink of water until you were 20 years old!” The below-20 age group also trailed the horse cavvy between camps, while others took the beef herd of the sorted cattle and moved the wagon. Roundup duties are the same these days, but age doesn’t matter as much as capability. FarmAndRanch.com
31
L-R: Rob Crofts, Zach Sanftner, Ivan Laird, John Corbett bring in the cavvy.
“One time a hail storm came up,” Corbett remembers of one cavvy move, “and a bunch of wild horses ran into the cavvy. And our horses just scattered, but a lot of them knew where the next camp was. They were about eight miles from camp and most showed up there. Some went home, or as close to home as they could get. “Horses will go with wild horses for a while, but then they decide it’s not that much fun.”
ily pays for roundup provisions and shares the electric bill for the wells according to the number of head they graze on the allotment. The 27 miles of power line for the Big Pasture stock wells were erected when the now defunct U.S. Rural Electrification Administration brought electricity to the area in 1957. At that time, the families converted the windColter Manley catching his mount before the day’s work.
Playing Roundup by Ear The families follow the BLM’s grazing permit regulations, but there are no written guidelines on how the ranchers work among themselves on the common allotment. Their decades of cooperation have refined their Big Pasture management practices into an unspoken consensus. “Roundup doesn’t take as much coordination as you would think,” Graham says with a shrug. “Everyone just does what needs doing and knows who should do it.” Everyone pitches in to repair fencing and livestock wells, and each fam32 Volume 74 Farm&Ranch
powered wells to electricity and added more wells to increase water available in drier areas of the pasture, benefiting both cattle and wildlife.
The families all agree to furnish hands in proportion to the cattle they have on the allotment, and to not bring stock dogs and mares on roundup. But most important of all, they always follow range etiquette. “People subscribe to it out here,” Corbett says of the cowboy code of respect. “You don’t ever ride in front of somebody, unless you have to. But mostly, when you’re holding herd and you want to go talk to that guy over there you go around behind everybody.” Cowboys take turns roping horses, so there aren’t too many loops in the air. And it is courtesy to wait for the guy who got the gate. When out riding circles assigned by the cowboss, cowboys avoid other’s circles when gathering. And no one rides in front of the old-timers leading the crew out. During roundup, an enduring tradition is that women do not overnight in cow camp. The women often day ride on roundup, while also doing chores and irrigating at their respective ranches. “When I was growing up we would come out and visit, but the ladies
didn’t ride that much,” says Andrea Dockery, who began riding roundup in the early 1980s as a young girl. “I started riding with the crew when I could drive myself out! And now it’s great our daughter, Laura, is able to participate.” Since the Big Pasture is grazed communally, the families’ cattle mix together during their four and a half months on the range. Some management ideas require discussion, such as what type of bulls are turned out to breed the cows. The families now concur it is registered Black Angus and Hereford bulls only. Jess Corbett “brings the beef”, the bulls, sale-ready cattle, and yearlings sorted from the past couple days, trailing them to the next camp.
The roundup crew gathers for instructions from the cow bosses, Rob Crofts and Thad Dockery.
that way, but there were so many black bulls around them they finally decided to keep up with the times. “So we all do Black Angus bulls now. You have to agree on things like that. No one wants a Jersey bull turned out!”
It’s Good Cattle Management “It was always Herefords for many, many years,” Corbett says of their preference. “Gradually, due to what the market wants, we changed to Black Angus bulls. “The Grahams liked their Hereford cattle and they wanted to keep them
Community roundups that pull out a wagon are rare in this era of instant access and hurry. The Big Pasture roundup still exists because of the families’ commitment to the cooperation and camaraderie of it. In another common allotment that
the Corbett family grazes, the ranchers all trailer their horses out to the areas to be gathered each day, and, after doing so, drive the cattle back to their respective ranches. “That allotment has changed hands enough that the new people just don’t want to take the wagon out and have a roundup,” Corbett says wistfully, “but roundup is still one of the most efficient ways to gather. It really is. “You add up all the gasoline that you use trailering out, and you could just about afford to have roundup where you’re out in cow camp for several days. “Pulling out the wagon on the Big Pasture is not something we do for the fun of it—it has a purpose,” Corbett continues firmly. “It is partly enjoyment too, but it’s a success thing. Roundup is the most efficient way to gather big country.” Laura Dockery watches the roundup party from a high perch.

Let Them be
Wild
76 Volume 74 Farm&Ranch
A Wyoming Ranch Family Establishes a Wild Horse Sanctuary By: Melissa Hemken
HH
orses fascinate artists. Inspire writers to poetry. Their strength, swiftness, and trainability have been useful to humans for centuries. Before automobiles, horses were necessary for transportation, agriculture and freight. With 21st century technology, horses are only needed as work animals in the ranch industry to care for cattle grazing rough country. Leaving many horses, especially wild horses free-roaming federal lands and cared for in holding facilities, with no purpose. Unwanted. And a yet unanswerable question for the U.S., what to do with the 99,891 mustangs managed by U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on open range and in holding facilities?
“If my Navajo grandpa was alive,” says Denise Oldham, co-owner of the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary north of Lander, Wyoming, “he would say, ‘You just let them be.’ It’s what those horses are supposed to be doing, being wild. Just let them be.” Left & top: Wild horses living at the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary. Bottom: Odessa Oldham is a University of Wyoming senior and helps her family on their ranch and sanctuary near Lander, Wyoming. She also leads the national Native American Youth in Agriculture Summit.

Visitors enjoy the interpretative display on Native American horse culture in the sanctuary visitor center.
The sanctuary is one of three BLM wild horse sanctuaries open for public tours. Denise and her family care for 150 wild horses on their working ranch just over the Wind River Mountains’ rocky spine east of Yellowstone National Park. Denise, husband Dwayne, and adult children Jared, Odessa and Jess use horses daily to care for their cattle and sheep. The BLM wild horse sanctuary added to their ranch in 2016, honors their Native American culture and reverence of the horse.
In 1915, the U.S. horse population peaked at 20 million. The Industrial Revolution dropped it 80 percent to 4.5 million by 1959. In the last 50 years the horse population doubled to over 9 million with two-thirds ridden for recreation, show and racing, and are bred to suit these activities. Where does this leave the mustang horse? Its bloodlines are not specialized: mustangs host genetics from 78 Volume 74 Farm&Ranch
roaming Spanish conquistadore horses, stray U.S. cavalry mounts, saddle horses turned out during the Great Depression, and draft horses released after the tractor’s invention. Though unwanted by horse people, the 55,311 horses roaming federal lands of the West embody freedom and the beauty of wildness.
The Oldhams work among mustangs on open range as their cattle graze Aspen Mountain and Warm Creek north of Rock Springs. The overpopulated wild horses living in this area caused soil erosion from heavy grazing and stomped water springs into muddy flats. Lack of forage and water compelled the Oldhams to move their cattle elsewhere. The BLM gathered the Rock Springs area to remove a portion of the mustang population, and many of the horses now live at the sanctuary. “The land can’t sustain more horses,” says Dwayne, a veterinarian and rancher. “We can’t just leave horses out there to starve along with wildlife. Instead of being a complainer, we are trying to be a part of the solution. But the 150 mustangs we have here at the sanctuary are just a drop in the bucket. There needs to be more management, like birth control, of wild horses.”
Mustang Management
With few predators the U.S. wild horse population doubles every four years, straining fragile high desert lands where they roam. To protect the balance of forage and water available for mustangs, wildlife and plant regeneration, the BLM thins a percentage of mustangs from the landscape. There are now 44,580 of these animals in holding facilities. The healthiest and most trainable are available for adoption, and 2,331 mustangs were adopted in 2015. Mustangs removed from BLM lands in Wyoming and Nevada graze irrigated meadows at the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary. The Oldhams rotate the mustangs through large pastures to ensure grass is evenly grazed and to rest meadows from livestock presence. On winter mornings brothers Jared and Jess pitchfork hay off a flatbed pick-up for the mustangs. It’s not just physical labor in feeding mustangs, it’s also the expense: in 2015 off-range facilities cost the BLM over $49 million.
Dwayne Oldham, veterinarian and rancher, also oversees the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary with his family.
Cowboys must watch out for mustangs when riding the range to care for cattle. Stallions charge horses and riders to protect their mares, and bachelor studs (without their own bands) try to steal domestic horses. “I tied a horse up to the stock trailer one day,” Dwayne recounts, “and rode another colt over a draw to check cattle. When I came back there was a stud horse chewing the heck out of my horse. He was tied up so he couldn’t get away from the stud beating on him. Now, when I switch horses during a long day, I leave the horses I’m not riding inside the trailer to protect them.”
Visitors to the Wind River Wild Horse Sanctuary view the wild horses from a horse-drawn wagon.
Finding Purpose
Horses are tools for the Oldhams. Their ranch horses are used by the family to doctor and brand cattle. On autumn roundup Oldham horses trot 20-mile circles for their riders to locate cattle down vast draws and behind looming buttes. But horses are also family. “I love the relationship I can build with horses,” says Odessa, Denise and Dwayne’s daughter. “We see horses as work animals, but they are also friends and beautiful creatures. If horses are left in a corral they become depressed because they like to be active and working. They’re athletes.” Her brother Jess thinks a solution for the high population of wild horses is to find them a purpose, as the family’s ranch horses.
The Oldham family trails cattle to new pasture on their ranch.
“We need to rethink the function of wild horses,” Jess explains. “The mustangs here at the sanctuary have failed adoption; they aren’t trainable. So what is their purpose?” Jared responds to his siblings, “We teach our ranch horses how to do ranch jobs, and they enjoy getting out and working. All wild horses know of their purpose is to find feed and water. And here at the sanctuary they are knee deep in grass.” Jess nods and offers, “An eagle needs two wings to fly: a left one and a right one. Both sides — keep them all free and decrease population — need to find a solution together for the benefit of wild horses. Before society modernized, horses were needed to work. Now we need to find a new balance for the mustang.” FarmAndRanch.com
