Get Free Technical Assistance for Managing Wildlife on Your Land Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Photos courtesy of Texas Parks & Wildlife Department

With 80 percent of Texas residents working in urban and metropolitan areas, it’s no wonder why so many seek solitude in the country; escaping the daily grind and the hustle and bustle of big city life. Vibrant wildflowers and abundant wildlife, watching deer wander through the meadow, and listening to the sweet songs of birds are commonplace in the country, making it an appealing and very popular place to settle down. But unless you grew up on a farm or ranch, managing and caring for wildlife or livestock on your ranch property can be very challenging.

30

Volume 82 Texas Farm&Ranch

“Sadly, the first thing that many folks coming from cities do is convert native wildlife habitat into something resembling a city park with mown grass and trimmed trees because that’s all they know,” explains Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Farm Bill Coordinator Chuck Kowaleski. “Then they wonder what happened to all of the wildlife that was there when they bought the place.” Others, he says, purchase a farm or ranch in the country with livestock, and decide they don’t want to deal with the responsibility of owning or caring for them.

“Then they’re shocked when their property tax bill skyrockets,” Kowaleski says. Before investing in your own piece of country heaven, Kowaleski recommends contacting the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Private Lands Program. There, he says, you can find a list of useful links, including Agricultural Tax Appraisal information, explaining how you can shift your current agricultural tax valuation from one based on crops or livestock to one involving active wildlife management. “The TPWD Private Lands Program can help you chart a course for wildlife and natural resource management on your property, helping you avoid management mistakes,” he says. “We offer a number of free private lands programs and publications designed to provide new and current rural landowners with useful technical assistance, and in some cases, even financial habitat management assistance.” Another service the TPWD offers is providing free, confidential technical assistance with developing a wildlife management plan specific to you and your land. “It’s not only a valuable service,

but really easy and convenient, too,” Kowaleski says. “Simply click Find a Biologist to locate the biologist assigned to your county. You give written permission from you or your agent to allow the biologist to assess your land, and your information will remain completely confidential unless you give written permission to release.” While he says properly managing wildlife habitat can be very expensive, the TPWD offers a number of costassistance programs available to private landowners. Below are a few programs designed to help you get the most out of your land:

bill programs administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that provide technical and financial assistance. If you require help or have questions regarding other agricultural and plant issues, contact your local Ag Extension agent.

Wildlife Management Cooperative Smaller landowners may find it difficult to manage for deer, turkey and quail on their own and should consider working with their neighbors to create a wildlife management cooperative to collectively manage larger areas of habitat. Your local wildlife biologist can help with this.

Landowner Incentive Program The Landowner Incentive Program provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners interested in managing their property for the benefit of at-risk plant and animal species, habitats and watersheds.

Pastures for Upland Birds Program The Pastures for Upland Birds Program provides cost-share incentives and technical guidance to private landowners to restore native grass and forb vegetation on pastures and hayfields dominated by nonnative grasses such as Bermuda. This is a great program if you would like to increase the amount of native grassland bird habitat on your property.

Federal Farm Bill Programs Landowners interested in maintaining a working ranch or farm can take advantage of a number of federal farm

White Elk Ranch 415 Acres

Central Texas v Uvalde County v Utopia

I

I have always said, it doesn’t get any better than the Seco Valley and submit the famous 415-acre White Elk Ranch as the most picturesque property I have offered in some time. With 600+ feet on Seco Creek, this high-fenced property has two houses each serviced by two deep water wells and web cameras providing real-time views of wildlife and serene beauty. The guest house overlooks two spring-fed tanks, both of which have been completely reworked supplying precious water during the 2012-2103 drought. The three bedroom 3,600-square-foot main house was built in 2009 on the east side of the property overlooking the Seco Valley. This pristine stone house was designed with incredible views from every room. It overlooks the pool and very large stone and concrete deck. The 1,500-foot elevation presents the very seasonal Seco Valley several miles in three directions. In full moon or abject darkness, the serenity of the evening landscape is intoxicating. Adjacent to the guest house is the equipment barn and outdoor entertainment area complete with new walk-in cooler and outdoor television. The wildlife on this ranch has been well fed with significant whitetail, turkey and occasional exotics. This property is priced to the quality that it is. Call Morris 210-415-9850.

Pbekes Ranch, located just south of Centerville, is one of the best traditional whitetail hunting ranches to be offered on the market in quite some time. It is comprised of 687.6 acres of prime whitetail habitat. The ranch has been under high fence since 2000 and was completely replaced last year with new

galvanized wire and posts. The ranch has been under extensive management for the last 16 years and has proven itself by growing some very impressive deer. The terrain is gently-rolling hills with some flat prairie-like grasslands. There are areas where the hardwoods are very thick and typical of this region, but there is also good brush country that transitions into the grassy prairie areas. The hunting blinds are all custom made and are absolutely top notch in both quality and durability, and every blind overlooks new protein and corn feeders in a food plot with multiple shooting lanes that support all skill levels. The deer population on the ranch is comprised of native, river-bottom genetics that have been culled to the owners liking mixed with handpicked, northern genetics that were introduced through natural breeding in soft pens and then released. The result has been a steady herd with several deer scoring above 200” BC. Now, let’s talk about fishing! Pbekes Ranch features two large lakes that were constructed with one goal in mind, to grow trophy fish. The largest lake is approximately 10 acres and has been managed intensively for trophy bass for 16 years and it has paid off. The largest bass caught to date is 13 pounds and it was promptly weighed, measured, photographed, and released back into the lake for future lunkers to be grown. The other lake is approximately 7 acres and is stocked with channel cats and crappie. Both of these lakes were built with siphon pipes in the dam as well as secondary spillways. In addition, there are five smaller ponds for waterfowl and for habitat support that are strategically placed around the ranch. The structural improvements are best described as simply elegant and tasteful. The lodge boasts four-bedrooms with four-bathrooms, an office and much more. There is also a connected, but separate, owner’s suite. The suite is one-bedroom, one-bath with a living room, kitchenette and large closet. M&S Ranch - 270 Acres Once part of the renowned Olmos Ranch, and later the Welder/Dobie Ranch, this sprawling historic ranch was the home place of famous American folklorist J. Frank Dobie. It was on this soil that his interactions with local Vaqueros gave birth to his calling. Listening to the Vaqueros talk over campfires at night in the 1920s, he “seemed to be seeing a great painting of something I’d known all my life,” the stories of the Texas land. Shortly thereafter he released his first book, “A Vaquero of the Brush Country”, 1929. Covering 10,247.552 acres of precious South Texas habitat, the high-fenced Caballero Ranch has approximately 5.5 miles of boundary along the famed Nueces River, and some of the best deer country in the State of Texas. There are numerous small ranch ponds throughout the ranch, in addition to 11 fishable lakes up to 50 acres in size, these 11 lakes make up over 90 acres of surface area. Miles and miles of aerated clear cuts provide excellent quail hunting opportunities throughout the ranch, and 48 acres of high-fenced irrigated food plots produce some of the finest dove hunting South Texas has to offer. The 5,500-foot paved air strip makes for easy access by air. The Caballero Ranch is exclusively marketed by Mark Hubbard Ranch Properties and will be shown by appointment only. The deer and bird hunting on this property is second to none and will rival anything in South Texas for quality of game. Fishing on the spring-fed San Saba River add another recreational feature that not many ranches can offer. Improvements on the ranch are very well done and well maintained but are not overbuilt or ill arranged like many other ranch facilities and improvements that you see today. (You are paying for what you get.) The river

The High Plains Ranch in Kremmling, Colorado, is being offered for sale for the first time for $39,800,000. The 6,945-acre ranch—arguably

High Plains Ranch Colorado v Grand County v Kremmling

the most action-packed luxury recreational ranch in the west, with its own private ski slopes—has been an idyllic, private retreat for one local family since 1999. The hope is that the Colorado paradise can provide another family with an exclusive getaway, filled with their own fond memories. Nestled in the high country, High Plains Ranch boasts amenities as grand as the Rocky Mountains that surround it. The ranch features a main lodge that would be the envy of any five-star resort, a well-appointed saloon and party barn suited for memorable gatherings, a hunting and ski lodge that acts as the perfect all-season basecamp for outdoor pursuits, and a giant workshop filled with toys to outfit any sportsperson’s appetite for outdoor adventure. High Plains Ranch is a year-round paradise, offering a four-season lifestyle – and it is all less than a two-hour drive from Denver, or minutes from the private jet accessible airport in Kremmling. Wranglers to guide horseback rides, private pond and river fly fishing for trophy rainbows, miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, rafting on the Colorado River, ATV adventures for all skill levels, a paint-ball competition course, a sporting clays and shooting sports center. More outdoor activities than you can imagine to create a book of memories. Then in the fall, when the mornings are crisp and the aspens turn yellow, hundreds of elk begin to gather for their annual event making High Plains Ranch one of Colorado’s most exclusive private hunting reserves. Once snowfall hits the high country, the ranch becomes a winter wonderland with as many outdoor adventure activities as during the summer months. Start by hosting your family and friends to skiing the private slopes at High Plains, take a Snowcat tour, cross-country ski over 10 miles of carefully-manicured trails or just snowshoe through the wilderness. Then warm up at the mountain top ski lodge. There are two Snowcats that keep the property’s slopes and trails in perfect condition at all times during the winter. For the ultimate winter challenge experience, enjoy world-class tubing at its finest on a 20-acre winter adventure park. A warming hut provides a cozy place to enjoy a hot cup of cocoa. For a high-speed adventure, jump on one of a fleet of snowmobiles right onto trails that wind through the Colorado High Country. And if you still have the energy, the property also has a private hockey and ice skating rink that comes equipped with a Zamboni to ensure the ice surface is in perfect condition. “This ranch is in a class of its own among trophy properties, and it must be seen to be fully appreciated,” said the owner. “I purchased and developed the ranch as a place for my family—including 27 children and grandchildren—to enjoy, and they had incredible times here. Now that the grandchildren are grown or off to college, the time has come for another family to make memories of their own in this Colorado paradise. There truly isn’t another property as exclusive and special as High Plains Ranch, and we’re looking forward to introducing all that it has to offer to its next owner.”
