A product of the Guzerat, the Gir, the Nellore and the Krishna Valley breeds, the American Brahman was born of necessity for hearty beef- and milk-producing cattle that would not struggle amid the often un-cattlefriendly Gulf Coast climate. Similar in appearance to the Zebu (or Bos indicus) native to India, Brahmans feature a variety of colors (light gray, red and black), but a well-defined hump between the shoulder blades, longer

For example, Bos taurus are known for their excellent muscle patterning and beef production, but are highly susceptible to heat and disease. Bos indicus function well in rough climates, but are known for their hardiness and efficient beef production. American Brahmans marry the best of both parents, and when partnered with varying breeds, naturally produce highquality first-cross (F1) offspring. Second to none in attaining this level of heterosis, this innovative crossbreeding results in offspring with superior weight, carcass efficiency and reproductive performance. F1 females possess an unprecedented maternal instinct. Born to nurture, the females have a lifespan that surpasses that of any European breed, an extended breeding window, often 50% longer than many other breeds, a fierce protective nature toward calves from predators and the ability to produce high-quality milk in vast quantities. ability to recycle nutrients through the blood stream and saliva. Their cattle tick resistance stems from a sleek coat unfavorable for tick attachment, an immune response that prevents tick development and chemicals in the sweat that act as a repellent. Brahmans can also travel extensively and produce the maximum quality of beef and milk from minimal resources. “What’s exceptional about Brahman’s is their low maintenance and adaptability,” said Chris Shivers, executive vice president and a 10-year member of the American Brahman Breeders Association (ABBA) staff. “These animals will survive in places where raising cattle was thought impossible, and the rate of their influence has expanded faster than any other breed in the world. At the ABBA, our priority is to educate breeders about these wonderfully diverse animals and the numerous benefits they bring to the ranching lifestyle.”
“In essence, an F1 female is unmatched. She has a higher bred-in

traits are introduced.
“And their offspring are a direct reflection of that quality.”
In addition, F1 steers have their own distinct set of attributes, including rapid growth, efficient gaining and excellent beef quality. They produce high-cutability carcasses with less excessive fat, but still retain the exceptional standard of quality, flavor and tenderness in demand worldwide. Today, American Brahmans have found homes around the world, with local ranchers and breeders importing the cattle in order to improve the quality of native livestock. One example of this includes the American Brahmans used to “upgrade” many herds in Venezuela and neighboring Columbia.
Today, American Brahman genetics roam around the world in over 74 countries. From Mexico, Central and South America to Africa, Eastern Asia and Australia, the American Brahman has excelled in every country it has been introduced and will continue to make a huge imprint in the world production of beef and increased milk production. When considering a breed known for exceptional production, maximum efficiency and unparalleled versatility, Brahman is the choice for all the right reasons.
“The ABBA is a really good organization that provides a wide range of services to its members,” said Carlos Lee, a member of the Houston Astros

During the weekend evening performances, spectators are also treated to a number of special exhibitions between classes that feature other breeds and disciplines, including Grand Prix Dressage and even an appearance by the Longacre Hunt and their hounds! Simply put, for two weeks in the spring, Pin Oak is heaven for horse lovers. And when the show is over, Houston’s horse aficionados need not go into withdrawal. The Pin Oak Club, the charity’s yearlong events partner, puts on parties throughout the year that also benefit Pin Oak’s charities. Members keep in touch through the website www.pinoak.org and on Facebook to learn about holiday parties, Polo events, Kentucky Derby parties, wine tastings and clinics with renowned training and horse behavior experts such as Frank Madden and Billy Robertson. Many of these events are generously underwritten by Pin Oak media partners and sponsors. Individuals can join Pin Oak Club for as little as $65 for the year, with comparable prices for juniors and families. There’s also a Young Pin Oak Club (YPOC) targeting young professionals, (21 to 35) who hope to make a difference in the Houston community by volunteering and fundraising through Pin Oak. The group plans to continue the Pin Oak tradition of charitable giving in a fun and relaxed setting. Members will be invited to periodic happy hours, mixers, YPOC sponsored equestrian and polo events, and regular Pin Oak Club events, and membership is just $50 for the year. “If you are interested in horses and giving back to the community, there is a place for you at Pin Oak,” says Pin Oak President Lynn Walsh. “We are a volunteer organization, with many, many jobs to do that range from fundraising and party planning to choreographing exhibitions and even planting flowers in whiskey barrels. There’s room for everyone to get involved…no horse required!” v To sponsor, volunteer or find out more about showing at The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, visit www.pinoak.org or call Roxanne Cook at 713 621-6290. The Rockpile Ranch
History
s
Comprising 55,374 acres, Rockpile Ranch is named for the massive geologic formations at the entrance to the ranch. Once a major portion of the historic 380,000-acre X Ranch in Jeff Davis County, it lies along the scenic loop in the Davis Mountains and just a conversation away from McDonald Observatory and Fort Davis. The Rockpile Ranch is in one of the true ecological sky islands of Texas, being isolated from similar mountain ranges by vast distances and terrain, preserving plants and animals that occur nowhere else on earth. The historic Rockpile and Sawtooth Mountain have drawn people to this area for a millennia and have been identified as two of the most famous geologic features of the Davis Mountains. Throughout the ranch lie remnants of preColumbian habitation, including numerous bedrock mortars and surface metates used for grinding grains in these cultures.

El Vado Ranch New Mexico v Rio Arriba County v Chama
P
Possibly one of the best mule deer and elk ranches in New Mexico, El Vado Ranch serves as a wintering location for large herds of game. The 2006 season produced a buck scoring 211 B&C, and multiple trophy deer still roam the ranch. Several miles of the Rio Chama Wildlife Management Area border the ranch and provide a refuge for trophy game. Within a mile of the ranch, you will find blue ribbon trout fishing in the Chama River and El Vado Lake. Very scenic and averaging around 6,000 feet in elevation, the ranch has several springs that could be developed to feed lakes on the ranch, 15 ponds, an artesian well and three other new water wells drilled in 2007. Ground water is readily available throughout the ranch at an average depth of 300 feet. The property has paved road access and great development potential. 2,000 to 8,000 acres can be purchased; the owner will divide one time. Set in northern New Mexico at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, El Vado is 20 miles southwest of Chama and is accessed paved County Road 112. For the past 10 years, the ranch has been heavily managed for trophy mule deer and elk. Rio Arriba County is the top area in the United States for

Feature Ranch
A Legend: The Devils River There still remain vast tracts where the spirit of the Texas frontier remains unbroken. Where gin-clear waters meander through sun-parched canyons. This is Nature’s private crossroads. From the air, the sight is unmistakable: A spring-fed ribbon in an undeveloped corner of Texas, the Devils River is the zero-benchmark for water quality in our state and one of the few wild rivers remaining in the Southwest. It remains as pure as yesteryear and awaits your discovery. A forest thrives along the riverbanks here on the western perimeter of the Hill Country, while desert plants and flowers assert themselves at this far-eastern reach of the Chihuahuan Desert. Representative plants and animals from the South Texas Brush Country additionally call this wild place home. Broad shouldered and rugged. Rich in character. The Devils River is a legendary oasis that speaks to all who treasure the great outdoors.

Paradise Found The ranch boasts 88,000-plus acres, rolled up from multiple individual parcels, each with a unique landscape and history. Teeming with wildlife, they comprise a sportsman’s paradise with both sides of one of Texas’ premiere fisheries in addition to whitetail deer, javelina, wild cats, turkey and quail. The spring-fed waters on the ranch nourish biological diversity. The 6-plus miles of pristine riverfront are home to rare and unique species. Over 350 bird types populate the ranch, some finding survival difficult elsewhere. Fern cave, the largest in the state by volume, provides maternity shelter to over 10,000,000 Mexican free-tailed bats; their dramatic, hour-long emergence on Summer evenings is a natural wonder to behold. Wide open yet secluded, this assemblage of land offers an unprocessed expanse of an older Texas, still much as it was when the railroad first went through, pristine and undeveloped. Of course, there are numerous homesites that would be ideal for modern construction, but the greatest satisfaction will be found on the land and waters of this unspoiled place.

The Last Frontier
Land of this stature is a rare find. Back in the day, neighboring ravines were nicknamed Dead Man’s Gulch and Crazy Canyon for good reason. Not far away, Judge Roy Bean dealt his wry brand of justice at the end of a six-shooter. Colorful, yes. But that was a single chapter in the land’s relatively recent past. The ranch’s roots go far deeper. Fern Cave was a Union bastion behind enemy lines at a time of secession and war between states. Fort Hudson, an outpost on the San Antonio to El Paso mail route, was situated on the ranch and the ruins of its pre-Civil War stockade are a haunting reminder of a time of war between cultures. Indeed, several recorded skirmishes occurred at “Camp Hudson” when raids throughout the area were commonplace. Over ten thousand years ago, before recorded history, people were drawn to the rock shelters and countless grottoes among the ranch’s canyons. They found a bountiful hunting ground and pure spring waters. And because only a few have had the enviable privilege to know and explore this area, to step foot here is to step back in time and encounter a history not widely known.

A rare few exhibit the scale of this offering. But no other place on the market today is so fully endowed with the things that appeal to the truly discriminating buyer of large ranches. If you count yourself among that rarefied clientele, please schedule today to see this important offering. Volume 58 Texas Farm&Ranch
S
ituated at Highway 55’s “19-Mile Crossing” of the Nueces River about halfway between Uvalde and Camp Wood, Long Hollow Ranch offers approximately 8,400 acres to the
informed sporting family equipped to recognize quality and value in today’s changing marketplace. Long Hollow and several of its contiguous neighbors are subject to water-quality conservation easements designed to ensure future permeability of the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone. By limiting (not eliminating) subdivision and development, these protections preserve far more than water quality. How secure is the viewshed at your existing ranch? How would it affect your enjoyment if the equally-large property you’re considering elsewhere becomes surrounded by 300-acre, then 150-acre ranchettes? If you plan to leave land to future generations, what safeguards the outdoors experience you enjoy today? Can it last? Long Hollow is an active cattle ranch and the conservation easements in place throughout the area enhance rather than limit sporting opportunities. Oil and gas extraction are expressly allowed, and all minerals will convey at time of sale. It’s simple: If you’re not a developer, conservation land provides substantially more acreage for a given budget, or requires less investment to reach a target size. Long Hollow Ranch is beautiful country with significant appreciative potential at a very compelling price. Fortunately for those that do, few people understand the emerging trends by which investment-grade rural property is selected and held. If you are capable of owning an asset of this caliber and you comprehend value, Long Hollow Ranch should be on your short list to consider. Limited subdivision is possible. Nothing similar is available for the price: offers between $800 and $1,200 per acre (depending on configuration) will be considered. v
