FROM THE PUBLISHER W

e occasionally receive editorial queries from our readers that have a story to tell. Bob Taylor reached out several months ago with a manuscript based on his time as a working hand on the 6666 Ranch, accompanied by an amazing collection of black and white archival photos. Now living in Virginia and working in DC, Bob took the time to jump back 50 years to write down his recollections of his time as a cowboy. He told me that he did it for his children, who didn’t have the good luck to grow up in Texas, and because he wanted to share with them some sense of what it was like to work cattle with the Marlboro Man, Bigun Bradley, and to spend youthful and halcyon days horseback (and apparently fearless) on one of Texas’s most famous ranches. The photos, some of which have never been published, are from the Donald C. & Elizabeth M. Dickinson Research Center at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and were taken by a well-known photographer and western art painter named Tom Ryan. We appreciate its director Kimberly Roblin and archivist Kera Newby providing permission to share these classic photos with you. Originally called the Research Library of Western Americana, the DRC opened with the museum in 1965 and houses the archival collections and library. While not always as visible as the art and history collections, the archives are critical to the museum’s mission, to preserve and interpret the evolving history and cultures of the American West, and support this mission through education, exhibitions, research, and publications. The collections span centuries and include more than 800,000 photographs; 45,000 books; manuscripts, maps, film posters, oral histories, artist collections, and more. The primary collecting categories are general western history, Native American history, rodeo history, ranching, western popular culture, and western art. Kera Newby was also kind enough to dig up a photo, brand, and other background information about my great-grandfather, Dave Hill, a charter member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame who ranched near Baird, Texas and in the Choctaw Nation in the late 1800’s. Although I have a photo of Dave and his cowboys at his annual July 4th rodeo taken at his ranch headquarters in 1909, I’d never seen the photo Kera sent. In his honor, and staying with our classic ranching theme, I’ve replaced my own photo in this column with his. Dave Hill, circa 1800’s. We’re excited to share Bob’s wonderful story, “The 6666 Ranch, a Fifty-year-old Reflection”, accompanied by the Ryan photos. I hope that you enjoy them both. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, farm and ranch sales are booming in our socially distanced world. Might be time to buy one of your own, and if you do; we can help. Stay safe out there, Texas.

24 Volume 98 Texas Farm&Ranch

West Texas v Hudspeth County

T

here is a mountain range in Texas that most people have never heard of, never been in, or even noticed, that towers up to 7,484 feet, seen across the sweeping grasslands and scrublands deep into Mexico, across the Rio Grande then north beyond the Guadalupe Mountains. The mountains are stunning, but the name remains unfamiliar. Welcome to the Eagle Mountains, the fifth highest range in Texas covering over 175,000 acres of rugged canyons, rocky outcrops, wooded slopes, springs, grasslands, and scrublands which also includes a paved road all the way to the summit. History, nature, ranching, and recreation all collide into a landscape of

diverse habitats and people. A “Sky Island” that is a world unto itself where stagecoaches guarded by Buffalo Soldiers once raced for protection from marauding Apaches. Today desert big horn sheep have returned proudly roaming the tortured slopes. Eagle Mountains do need an introduction and for the first time in decades there are 136,000 acres for sale in four different adjacent ranches. King Land & Water is pleased to present three of these four ranches for sale with the 76,185-acre Eagle & Carrizo Mountain Ranch, the 47,700-acre Piñon Ranch, and the 2,963-acre Eagle Piñon Ranch. An adjacent 10,322 acre is also for sale adjacent to this contiguous block of land creating a FarmAndRanch.com

once in a lifetime opportunity to own almost an entire Texas mountain range. Elk, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, aoudad and blue quail are abundant as well as a diversity of plants and animals that have evolved and are attracted to these cooler higher elevations. Ranching heritage is rich today as this is part of a working family enterprise where you can hunt from a mountain lodge, rope and drag to the iron, hike in pinon pines, and gaze into the endless night sky. It

26 Volume 98 Texas Farm&Ranch

is not a dream; it is the Eagle Mountains and it can all be yours. Eagle & Carrizo Mountain Ranch consists of two nearby distinct properties that are connected by an improved caliche county road and miles of a paved/concrete private road linking the ranches with easy access. The ranch is divided into the 27,499-acre Carrizo Mountain Ranch fronting on the south side of I-10 starting just west of the city of Van Horn for 11.5 miles including and

past the Allamore Exit, and the 48,686-acre Eagle Mountain Ranch which encompasses the core high elevations of the mountain range including the 7,484-foot Eagle Peak itself. Here, the high elevation creates its own weather during summer rains giving way to increased grasslands, lush woodlands and a combination of vegetation that is not only unique, but crucial for the immense wildlife populations. Steep mountain slopes, rocky outcrops with jagged peaks and wooded

canyons all combine to provide a remarkable landscape with never-ending views. Both ranches support a naturally occurring population of desert big horn sheep where over the past two years they have received and filled two permits from TPWD putting the Eagle’s and Carrizo’s on the map for exceptional hunting opportunities. Piñon Ranch, spanning 47,700 acres, is the combination of the old Espy Ranch on the west and Piñon Ranch to the east and has been managed and lived on by the current owners for several decades creating a pride of ownership in the infrastructure, headquarters, roads, pens, waters, and improvements. Cattle infrastructure is all there, and for hunting an amazing hunting lodge is situated in the higher elevations of the ranch creating a perfect atmosphere for guests and paid hunters. This high Chihuahuan Desert Ranch has elevations ranging from 4,150 feet to 6,700 feet with a series of canyons, peaks, valleys, rolling flats, and arroyos creating a wide-ranging landscape. Goat Canyon, Carpenter Canyon and Horse Canyon create extraordinary geology and rock outcrops. Panther Peak towers over the ranch looks down on the rock and adobe ruins and historical marker set in 1936 marking the Eagle Springs Stagecoach stop and the site of many Indian skirmishes with the U.S. Calvary. Eagle Piñon Ranch is 2,963 acres nestled on the southeast shoulder of the range with elevations ranging from 4,600 feet to 5,596 feet. At this elevation there is a lush grassland matrix with brush, cacti, and piñon pine trees, creating a Davis Mountains appearance. There is a series of 4x4 roads which get you around to the various features on the ranch. An excellent water well and new hunting lodge create a comfortable and functional hideaway. Eagle Mountain ranches are a mere 1.5 hours from El Paso International Airport and 30 minutes from Van Horn Airport, these ranches have large well-established landowner neighbors, all with low fences and excellent game management programs, making the Eagle Mountain Ranches some of the most diverse cattle ranching, hunting and recreational properties in Texas. T

he raw natural beauty of the 2,169±-acre Richey Ranch in the rolling sand hills and hardwood bottoms of Freestone County offers unlimited opportunities to create the ranch of your dreams. Located about seven miles north of Buffalo, the ranch is a 75-minute drive from both Houston and Dallas. The diverse soil and diverse native vegetation provide exceptional wildlife habitat. The majestic hardwoods include water oaks, post oaks, pecans and sweet gum; some timber could be harvested. While the ranch is primarily native habitat, there are two improved pastures that could be used as hay meadows. For the past nine years, Richey Ranch, operated as private family hunting retreat, has been managed to produce trophy white-tailed deer through TPWD’s MLDP 3 program. In 2010, the ranch was high fenced and the existing deer herd removed. In 2011, the ranch was stocked with bred does with fawns at side. In addition, the ranch has a deer breeding operation with about nine acres of breeding and soft release pens. The 2,500±-square-foot working house has nine holding rooms. An attached breeding barn is in the final stages of construction. Infrastructure dedicated to the deer herd includes eight protein feeders, eight to ten corn feeders, a three-ton feed cart, a 28-ton capacity silo, and 12 hunting blinds. Brown’s Creek and Self Creek traverse the property, which also has nine stock ponds. Numerous duck species take advantage of the plentiful water. In addition, the ranch is home to feral hogs, varmints and a host of small and non-game species. Building sites suitable for a memorable ranch house abound. Currently, a single-wide mobile home with a kitchen/dining room combination, two bathrooms and two bunk rooms, which sleeps 12, is the primary lodging. A 1,200±-squarefoot metal equipment barn with a concrete floor rounds out the infrastructure. The ranch has a single water well to supply the house and pens. 6666 A 50-year-old reflection

N

early 50 years have passed since I last set foot on the Sixes. I was reminded of that recently, when I came across one of my old faded college term papers in a dusty box of junk and other discarded memories. As I thumbed through the musty pages it took me back in time. I was in my last year at Texas A&M University and had been required to write a paper

THE FOUR SIXES RANCH

on the subject of rural sociology, a study of sorts on a selected microcosm of Texas life well beyond the bright lights of the big city. It was to address the culture, lifestyle and more importantly, the people who lived and worked in the more sparsely populated ranch and farming counties of Texas. We were allowed to choose the place and subject matter for our papers, so I chose to

write about a rather unique personal experience of my own a few years earlier and the exceptional people I encountered. As I read the paper again, all the memories came rushing back. In the early summer of 1968, I was 17 years old and had just arrived at the headquarters of the giant Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. I was there to work as extra summer help during

their yearly bull roundup when they typically hired a few extra hands to separate the bulls from the rest of the herd, and perform a dozen or so other tasks. Back then, they often hired a number of ranch kids out of high school or college during their summer break. I was fortunate to be one of them. At that stage of my life, I was totally into the cowboy thing—Stetson hat, boots, spurs, horses and the lure of big ranch country. At the time, I lived on the outskirts of Fort Worth with my parents, had several horses of my own and worked regularly on my grandfather’s small cow-calf operation. I loved the work and being outdoors. I had always dreamed of “cowboying” on a big ranch, and the Four Sixes Ranch had captured my imagination. This was one of the few big ranches that still took a muledrawn chuck wagon into its remote rangeland to feed the cowhands during roundups, and serve as their home for weeks at a time. The Sixes was a link to a bygone way of life clinging to survival as time and technology were rapidly passing it by. My obsession began a few years earlier when my parents and I stopped in Guthrie to stretch our legs and grab a soda on our way to Colorado.

At First Sight

It just happened that we pulled into the 6666 Supply House, an old limestone

building that stood on the outskirts of town. Essentially a general store run by the ranch and built around the end of 19th century, it consisted of one long and narrow room, bordered on each side with ancient wooden counters stacked with merchandise, hats and jeans. On the rear wall hung a picture of Burk Burnett, founder of the Sixes. In the middle of the well-worn plank floor sat a wood-burning stove with its stack extending into the ceiling. Around the stove were a several chairs where visitors and cowhands could relax and swap stories. On the hitching rail outside were three saddled horses and on the inside were three Four Sixes cowboys taking a break from the hot sun, leaning back in those chairs and enjoying a cold soda. The scene could have been from the 1880s, but, I’m sure as we walked in, we were the ones that looked out of place. I remember talking to those cowboys as we took a break from our long drive. As I recorded in my term paper, one turned out to be a Texas Tech quarterback working there during summer break. That’s when I first learned the ranch hired extra hands during the summer. I was sold on the idea before I even got back to the car.

The Sixes

Next to the King Ranch in the southernmost tip of Texas, the Sixes was perhaps the most famous of the old historical ranches still in operation or not broken up. It was also one of the largest, covering a vast rugged landscape stretching endlessly

over hundreds of square miles of prairie and canyons in the southern panhandle. On it grazed about 6,000 to 7,000 head of cattle. The Sixes covered the larger part of King County, over 206,000 acres, and had another 100,000 acres on Dixon Creek in Carson County in the northern panhandle. Additionally, the Burnett estate owned nearly another 100,000 acres purchased by Burk Burnett’s son Tom, the Triangle Ranch in Cottle and Foard County. Guthrie was both the seat of King County and its only town. Located at the intersection of the two paved roads which crossed the county, Guthrie bragged a population of about 125 in 1968. (The most recent census figure reveals an explosive increase by 2019, to 166. It certainly has not grown much over the decades.) As I recalled in my term paper, in 1968 it boasted four gas stations (one abandoned) a post office, church, one school (grades 1–12), county courthouse and a café built onto the side of one of the gas stations. There was only a scattering of small houses. In fact, most of the population were either employed by, or associated with, the Sixes in some way. The biggest presence in town was the ranch headquarters itself, where the Burk Burnett mansion sat on a long ridge overlooking the little hamlet. The house stood mostly empty when I was there, Roping on the remuda. Photo by Tom Ryan, 1963, silver gelatin print. except when Burk Burnett’s granddaughter and heir to the ranch, Ann Tandy, came to visit from her home in Fort Worth. In reality, the ranch headquarters was the town.

boying was still the main source of employment. Not that I was much of a cowboy, being just a green kid still in high school, and certainly not experienced like the seasoned hands that worked on the Sixes Burnett’s Legacy year-round. Most of the permanent ranch Popular legend had it that cowman hands there were born and raised within Samuel Burk Burnett acquired a small herd this baronial ranch country, many second of cattle in a poker game sometime in the or third generation cowboys. By the late 1890’s he controlled George Humphreys, the Sixes Ranch forevast rangeland, much of which he leased man for almost 40 years. He was just shy of from the Comanche war Chief Quanah 70 years old, rather short, had a bit of a beer Parker. Quanah had accepted peace years belly and a face tanned from years of Texas before and ended-up controlling a large sun. He began work on the ranch as a young chunk of reservation land in southwest cowboy, eventually becoming foreman and Oklahoma, which he in turn leased to even served concurrently for a while as ranchers like Burnett. red Four Sixes barn, stables and holding pens. Upon entering we drove past a line of houses that I was told quartered senior married ranch hands and their families. The bunkhouse lay just behind the mansion. It was a long one-story building with a screened porch running its entire length. Four rooms opened onto the porch, each with a number of old single beds. There was a TV room with a mismatched

worn out assortment of chairs and couches. A wood-burning stove provided heat for the winter. In one room a mounted buffalo head hung on the wall. The floors were dirty, worn and scratched from years of boot heels and spurs. This wasn’t the Ritz for sure, but to me it looked great. Humphreys left me in the hands of a cowboy to get myself situated. Frederick reminded me of one of those humorous caricatures of thin lanky cowboys. He told me to select an empty bunk on one side of the house. The other side was reserved for the Mexican cowhands or vaqueros. I remember being surprised there weren’t more summer hires like myself bunking there. Initially it was only myself, Frederick, maybe four Mexican cowboys and a few days later another cowboy was hired who had worked there previously. I learned a number of the summer hires were sent out to work at cow camps in the remote sections of the ranch where a married cowboy lived and looked after the cattle in his assigned area. There was the Taylor Camp, Old Eight Camp, North and the South Camps. So began my time on the Four Sixes ranch. My wages would be on pro-rated; the basis of $150 per month, standard pay for new hands.

Daily Schedule

Workdays began well before daylight. With temperatures that could reach over 100 degrees, it forced outdoor work to be done early in the day and late in the afternoon. We stumbled over to the Mansion before sunrise and entered the kitchen door for breakfast. I was pointed to a door leading to the Burnett dining room by Frederick. The cook, a wife of one the cowboys named Riley, had laid out a spread of eggs, steaks, bacon, biscuits, pancakes and much more. The food was plentiful and meant for a hard day’s work. What really put me in awe was the dining room where we ate. It was full of history. We sat at the same massive table where Burk Burnett took his meals. On the walls hung animal trophy heads and numerous historical pieces of the old west including museum worthy Comanche artifacts, no doubt mementos from Burnett’s friendship with Quanah Parker. I especially seem to recall one impressive feathered war lance hanging on the wall. Following the morning meal, the hands gathered at the bunkhouse to receive

their work assignments from Humphreys. It was there I met another legend, Bigun Bradley. Bigun was the “Wagon Boss” of the Sixes and, in effect, the number two man in charge. He was seen as the most experienced cowboy and oversaw all work, especially the yearly roundups. I never knew it before I arrived, but Bigun was already somewhat famous as one of the original Marlboro cowboys depicted in TV commercials and magazine ads. The Marlboro film crew had previously used the ranch for some magazine photo ads featuring the chuck wagon and discovered the perfect Marlboro man working right there—a real cowboy, not some dress-thepart Hollywood model. I recognized him as soon as I saw him. I also met Bobby Thompson, another senior married hand who was destined to become a ranching legend and was already well respected. He was a true professional, respectful of others and a good mentor. At that time, he oversaw the quarter horse herd and its breeding program.

Bulls and Horses

My first assignment was to be in one of the groups that searched on horseback for bulls in a selected portion of the ranch. The concept seemed fairly simple. Once there, we would find the bulls in that part of the ranch and then drive them by horseback to distant pens where they would later be loaded into a large cattle truck by Frederick and transported to a separate fenced pasture, separated from the cows. It would not turn out to be quite so simple or easy. When the meeting broke up, those of us going after bulls grabbed our saddles and headed to a pen near the barn where a large remunda of geldings milled around nervously anticipating what was about to happen. Each of the cowboys had their own assigned string of horses only they rode, maybe eight to ten. A cowboy working cattle might need to change horses two or more times a day depending on the level of work. Selection of each cowboy’s string was based upon seniority, thus the hands who worked there the longest got the pick of the most seasoned mounts. The newest hands made due with what was left. The better trained horses were three years or older, so the younger hands often had two year olds in their string. At the same time, each cowboy obviously had favorites in

their string and, as a result, some may not have been ridden quite as often. Don’t get me wrong, the Sixes had a reputation for breeding the finest quality quarter horses in Texas. But just like people, horses need time and experience to reach their potential. Since I was the parttime hire, I had to wait for one the cowboys to offer me whatever horse they were willing to give me. You see where I’m going with this? Even I was well aware of the old trick of putting the new guy on some wildeyed outlaw horse named “widow-maker.” While I waited apprehensively for the horse that might send me airborne, I watched as each cowboy stepped forward in the pen to put a rope and bridle on their selected mount. As the horses swirled from one side of the pen to the other in a cloud of dust, each cowboy stood patiently until the horse he wanted from his string presented a clear target. Then with an underhanded flick of the arm they would send a loop of rope through the air, landing precisely around the horse’s head and neck. It was impressive. Finally, I was offered a mount and led it out to saddle and load into an open-top horse trailer. There were about three pickups with their-towed horse trailers going out that morning to different parts of the ranch, each carrying three or four saddled horses and their riders. At this point I should point out, as I did in my term paper, these were real cowboys; they lived and dressed the part. I didn’t see any store-bought rodeo belt buckles or ostrich skin boots, nor any fancy western shirts or decorative zip-up chaps. They wore traditional plain cowhide slant-heel boots, faded and worn jeans, plain light colored long sleeve shirts and dusty sweat-stained Stetsons to shield the sun. Their chaps were plain, unadorned and wellworn cowhide, usually shotgun style you had to pull over your boots. They were designed to protect a rider’s legs from mesquite and cat-claw thorns, not for rodeo parades. Their only indulgences seemed to be a preference for “hand-made” boots, chaps and saddles. For cowboys working on the big ranches in this part of Texas, it meant saving their wages to buy a Carl Darr saddle or a pair of shotgun chaps, handmade at his shop in nearby Paducah. I still have my Carl Darr chaps to this day. When reaching our pasture after a long drive, we unloaded our horses, checked our saddles, tightened our cinches and began FarmAndRanch.com 115

our search. When I say “pasture” I should explain to our eastern friends that these fenced pastures covered tens of thousands of acres. To put it into perspective, maybe compare these pastures to the size of some counties in the east. On this day I was riding with Bigun and a young cowboy named Kinney from Wellington, Texas. Kinney was 21 years old, married to a Mexican-American girl and already had a daughter and was expecting another baby, soon. I remember he was desperately hoping for a boy. Considered a top hand with horses, Kinney made extra money on the side by shoeing 6666 horses for three dollars a head. Before I left Guthrie that summer, Kinney indeed had his second child, another girl. On this day, we hadn’t been riding long when Kinney stopped, jumped off his horse and killed a rattlesnake. He cut off its rattler and we resumed our search at a trot. It was a long morning and it didn’t take long for the temperature to rise. Bigun kept us somewhat spread out and moving at a steady rate through a range largely covered with mesquite, scattered cedar and prickly-pear cactus. In 1968, the cattle on the ranch were of

the Hereford breed. My grandfather raised Herefords so they were very familiar to me. My view of them was they were a fairly docile breed and unperturbed when people were nearby. In fact, they generally came running to us when my granddad’s pickup appeared, thinking they were about to be fed. But I noticed as soon as we rode up on a group of 6666 cattle, they often took off running like a deer through the brush. They were half wild. Why wouldn’t they be? They rarely saw a human except perhaps during a spring or fall roundup when the calves were roped, vaccinated and branded. As we continued along looking for bulls, we’d occasionally found a cow with a calf that had not been found during spring roundup. Nothing could be done about the brand or vaccination but when we came across a bull calf, Bigun and Kinney would rope them, stretch them out and convert them from bull to steer in a New York minute. Then we’d ride on eventually finding several full-grown bulls and drive them to a cattle pen to be picked up later by truck. Several times, the bulls would force a full speed chase before complying. Finally, as the heat rose higher, we’d go back in for

a late lunch and a short but welcome siesta until mid-afternoon, when we would load a fresh set of horses and go out again. My work while at the Sixes varied greatly. Several days I worked with Bobby Thompson running pregnant quarter horse mares into pens and then into squeeze chutes or stocks to be checked by a veterinarian. I also spent a number of days with Frederick picking up bulls from remote pens and transferring them to different pastures. One day I went with him to Dickens County to pick up a truck load of barbedwire rolls and fence posts. Then driving for miles upon miles into the heart of the ranch to deliver the supplies to a Navajo fencing crew from New Mexico building a new line of fence. I fed horses and even loaded bails of hay into a truck and stacked them in loft of the old famous red 6666 barn—not a fun task getting itchy straw dust and particles down your shirt. I also helped butcher a steer to resupply the kitchen with steaks and roasts. But being able to ride with 6666 cowboys was the real gold.
