he New Year always brings excitement and anticipation around our offices. New broker clients, new listings for our current clients, and with our spring issue on the horizon, the promise of that magic time in Texas when wildflowers bloom and tree buds open as they proudly display what the English call “first green.” My friend Lias J. “Jeff” Steen and his brother Jennings will mount their 12th annual pilgrimage in early spring which they call “Search for Primavera.” Following in the footsteps of a well-known and much-loved Houston writer named Leon Hale, they head south from Houston looking for the first mesquite tree bloom, at which point they officially declare it springtime in Texas. Sometimes stopping at their homestead ranch along the way, they write about their adventures as they go, usually getting deep into South Texas before they find the first bloom. Last year, for the record, it was near Sabinal on March 7. Meanwhile, it’s early February in Central Texas, and a perfect 50 degrees in San Marcos where I live. As I write this I’m thinking back to the famous snowfall of 2017. I was heading west on Hwy 32 towards the TALB Holiday Party in Fredericksburg when it started lightly snowing. By the time I got to the party, downtown Fredericksburg looked like a German village in the dead of winter—all white and quiet and lit with wonder and holiday lights. This issue is the second we’ve produced in our new partnership with Texas Monthly, and your positive feedback has been important to us. Once again, we include some great stories by Texas Monthly writers, and once again we’ll be mailing Texas Farm & Ranch to 25,000 Texas Monthly subscribers. I’m also happy to report that the re-launch of farmandranch.com has been completed with much acclaim. Check it out at www.farmandranch.com. Please keep your calls and e-mails coming, and let us know if we can help you find a good broker, help your broker sell your ranch, or help you and your broker find your dream place in the country. Let Fly the Loop WHEN THE CHUTE OPENS AND THE STEER CHARGES,
t a Van Horn arena on a THERE’S NO PLACE JIMMY STEVE MARTINEZ WOULD late-summer afternoon, RATHER BE THAN ON HIS HORSE, WITH A ROPE IN HIS HAND. speckled steers bawled BY ST E R RY BU TCH E R in the chute as Jimmy P H O T O G R A P H B Y J A M E S H . E VA N S Steve Martinez flightchecked his horse Yoshiki. Martinez, a 42-year-old team roper, takes his time with the same routine before every event. Brush Yoshiki’s coppery coat. Braid his coppery mane. Strap skid boots on the gelding’s legs. Throw aboard the position, delivery, and dally. I go through the saddle stamped “Big Bend Cowboy Hall of Fame.” In his mind, Martinez envisions steps in my head and try to do exactly that.” the perfect run. “I visualize everything,” he said. “My horsemanship, my swing, my Twenty minutes later, Martinez was one of two ropers angling their horses into boxes on either side of the steer waiting inside the chute. When the chute clanged open, the steer charged forward. The ropers waited a moment to give the animal a head start and then roared after it. Ruben Brito, the header, closed in on the steer and threw a loop over its horns. As the loop settled, Brito quickly dallied his end of the rope around his saddle horn and hauled the steer along in a leftward arc. Martinez, the heeler, focused on the rise and fall of the steer’s hind feet. Yoshiki slowed automatically, and Martinez swung his loop overhead, taking aim. When the timing was right, he let fly the loop, caught both hind feet, pulled the slack, and dallied. Both horses spun to face the steer strung between them. The complicated feat was over in seconds, accomplished at a gallop. “The horse, the rider, the steer—it all has to be in sync,” Martinez observed later. Ropings like this 4-H fundraiser occur nearly every weekend across Texas. These are family events that can last all day, with kids and horses everywhere. In Van Horn, a father warming up his horse led behind him a pint-size cowboy on a pint-size skewbald pony. Middleschoolers in 4-H shirts hawked Gatorade and brisket burritos at the concession stand. “What 4-H projects are you boys doing this year?” a customer asked, and the answers rang out in bright unison: “Goats!” “I’m raising a hog!” “Wildlife!” A pair of ten-year-old girls, their mouths stained with alarming snow-cone colors, wove through the parking lot riding double on a patient, slowmoving gray horse. A smattering of folks fanned themselves in the shade of the covered stands. As is fitting with West Texas demographics, the
36 Volume 87 Texas Farm&Ranch
crowd was mostly Hispanic. Joshing among ropers was conducted primarily in Spanish; the ohhhhs for misses and whoops for great catches were more nondenominational. Amateur ropers are drawn to this type of roping contest, known as a jackpot, which typically features friendly competition among local contestants, as well as a payout for winners. These events are distinct from professional ropings, held at sanctioned rodeos, which feature pro ropers who relentlessly roam the country, chasing hefty payouts and a chance at the end-of-year National Finals Rodeo. Martinez used to be a pro. He earned his pro card at nineteen and left his hometown of Marfa for an itinerant life, pulling all-nighters with his roping buddies as they drove to the next arena, the next crowd, the next set of steers. “I did eighty to one hundred rodeos a year,” said Martinez. “You pay your fees, warm up your horse. You go into the arena, and once you perform, you’ve got to unsaddle, water, feed, and get on the road to the next one.” Those were good times. He was young, with loads of friends and no attachments or responsibilities other than to his horse and his truck. Every rodeo town had buckle bunnies and bars. People wanted to be around a real cowboy. People knew his name. But the road requires money for fuel, cheap motels, cheap eats, entry fees. Money for alfalfa, horseshoes, truck repairs, tires, ropes, rent. Martinez has won eighty saddles in his career. Now he’s got only three; the rest sold for quick cash to get a little farther down the road. Over time, the travel wearied him, his ambition diluted by distractions along the way. “I was on the road for eleven years, roping,” he said. “I’d be home maybe two months of the year. It came to a point where I started going for the wrong reasons. Instead of going for what I loved, it was the rock-and-roll lifestyle. I lost my way. And I didn’t care. What changed everything were my girls.” During a visit to Marfa in 2003, Martinez started seeing a woman named Lorinda Carrillo, and the two of them began a life together. She briefly joined him on the road— “I didn’t like it,” she said—and then they set up a household in Midland. He was gone a lot, juggling his home life and roping. Money got real tight. He recalled a time when they were down to their last $11. Carrillo was seven months pregnant with their first child, a girl they’d call Charlize. “We lived off eleven dollars that whole week,” he said. “That was the low point.” The family moved back to Marfa; Martinez gradually quit touring and dropped his pro
status. The transition from roping’s nomadic existence to a more mundane life, however, wasn’t easy. For a long while, Martinez cowboyed, managed a ranch in Pyote, groomed polo ponies, or cooked for hunters, jobs that kept him away for days or weeks at a time. Eventually he landed a steady position on the city’s utilities crew, working on roads and maintaining the water system. He rode and roped only sporadically, on borrowed horses. And he was miserable, unfulfilled. “How do you go from one hundred miles per hour down to fifty?” he said. “I felt like everyone owed me. I felt sorry for myself.” Some tenets of horsemanship are difficult to master. Never get angry at a horse. Anger stalls their progress. Horses need patience. A stubborn horse is a teacher of patience. When Martinez started treating himself as he might treat a horse, something changed. In 2013, around the time of the birth of his second daughter, Jade, an idea took hold. Nine years had passed since Martinez had ended his pro roping career. “One day I realized, ‘Listen to yourself. You’re not sick or dead or crippled. My lady wants a house of our own. We ain’t gonna get that on our nine-to-fives.’ I realized, ‘I’ve got to get back to roping. I’ve got to practice.’ ” The day he stopped feeling sorry for himself, he became a better roper, a better horseman, a better family man. “It made me love Lorinda more,” Martinez explained. “I couldn’t really love her until I could love myself.” He began to rope seriously again—this time as an amateur. Things started looking up. Yoshiki—a Japanese name that means “glory”—entered Martinez’s life. “He’s a once-in-a-lifetime horse,” he said. “A roper is only as good as his machine, and he’s a fine machine.” Martinez attended roping practice, gave lessons, picked up partners. He entered amateur ropings, but only on weekends and in places not too far from Marfa. Roping became joyful. “I’m eyes-wide-open now,” he said. “I’m having way more fun than I did when I was younger. My patience has grown tenfold. I can really break things down and know what I need to do. I’m back, and this is my second coming.” There’s real money to be made in team roping, at least for good ropers. The purse at jackpots is tied to entry fees. A small town’s jackpot can generate a win of $500 to $700; bigger events with more entrants might have a purse of $5,000 or more. Even more enticingly, in recent years a number of national organizations have sprung up offering prizes at amateur events that are
as attractive as the pro circuit purses, but without so much travel. The World Series of Team Roping championship, for instance, held in Las Vegas, paid $320,000 last year to the winning header and heeler team in Martinez’s division. Martinez and his heading partner, Lino Barragan, of Fort Stockton, qualified and came home with forty-fourth place, splitting $6,000. The pair has qualified again this year and will rope there in December. Martinez used to have to drive and rope all year to make ends meet. These days he travels to 25 or 30 jackpots per year, about 15 of which, like the Series qualifier, really matter. “You can make a living now team roping as an amateur,” he said. “The prizes are so good, if you do well in two or three, you’ve made your year. I’m going to prove to myself, to my family, that I can make a living doing this. I’m glad for the job that I have and where we live. I love it. But I’m going to win. I’m going to buy the house that this woman wants. That’s the goal. Every day I get on a horse and swing a rope I get closer.” If he wins the Series, they’ll buy a house. If he wins the Series, he and Carrillo will marry. “I want her to have the dress she wants and the wedding I want,” he said. In the meantime, there was roping to be done. Afternoon thunderheads built up on Van Horn’s tawny horizon. Steers darted past. Horses gave chase, and graceful loops circled the sky for a moment before snaring horns or hooves. Carrillo sat in the stands with twelveyear-old Charlize and three-year-old Jade. Martinez roped consistently and flashed Carrillo a grin after a particularly snappy catch. “I told him the other day, you don’t know how to multitask,” she said. “And he goes, ‘Try roping—you got to ride right, swing right, position right, dally right, and do all of it in six seconds. Try that and then you can tell me about multitasking.’ ” She laughed at the memory. “Okay, babe! You’re right.” Martinez and Yoshiki flew from the box again and again, for about twenty runs. Martinez caught almost every time. At the end of the afternoon, the scorekeeper announced Martinez had won second and third places with two different partners. A payout awaited. He stepped off Yoshiki and loosened the gelding’s cinch. The horse rubbed his sweaty forehead against Martinez’s arm. Jade ran to her father. He set her atop the horse and started for the trailer. His roping friends clapped him on the back as he walked. “I missed a few—that’s team roping—but I’m not leaving here empty-handed,” he said. “It’s still satisfying. It doesn’t matter how many times you win, it still feels great.” v FarmAndRanch.com

he Lucky A Ranch, located six miles east of Navasota, is 388± acres of thoughtfully customized perfection about 72 miles from Houston. Four-bar pipe fences are prominent. The pastures are improved, with mixed Bahia grass, Coastal Bermuda and mature trees. About 30 percent of the ranch is wooded providing native wildlife habitat. Every pasture has either a lake, stock tank or water trough to provide for livestock and wildlife. The ranch has two spring-fed lakes each five acres or larger, stocked with Florida bass, crappie and blue gills. There are also three spring-fed stock tanks, several springs, and three wells. The turnkey ranch has been a purebred 200-head, cow-calf operation, but could be a horse farm or a country getaway with income generating potential. A fenced lane transects the property so livestock can be moved easily to the lighted and covered central working facility. Most ranch equipment will transfer with the sale. The 5,000± square-foot house exemplifies one-of-a-kind rustic elegance where even the windowsills are granite in the three-bedroom (plus a flex room and office), three-and-a-half-bathroom house. Abundant granite and hand-built, custom wood work featuring light-stained ash make a strong design statement. The wood and granite are offset by natural light, soaring ceilings, open design, neutral color palette, and handcrafted antler chandeliers. The all-electric kitchen with its custom cabinetry and large walk-in pantry features Wolf and Subzero appliances. Front and back porches, encompassing 1,625-squarefeet, overlook professionally landscaped grounds. A 24x40 covered patio is outfitted with a wood-burning fireplace, a six-foot Bull barbeque pit, granite bar and nine-foot granite-topped table as well a sink, ceiling fans and hand-crafted cedar ceiling. An attached, oversized threecar garage can accommodate three Ford F-350 pickups. There are seven metal outbuildings including: a hay barn (40x100-foot with a 30-foot lean-to), a combination equipment/hay barn (150x125 with a 20-foot unpaved lean-to provide covered storage for heavy equipment), feed room/storage building (25x80), RV storage building (45x50 with water, sewer and electrical hook-ups inside), air-conditioned workshop (22x30), an air-conditioned, insulated “flex” building (40x25 with a 14-foot rollup door and 36-inch walk-in door that can be used as climatecontrolled storage or a game room), and a “three-sided” storage building (45x50 attached to the back of the flex building.) All are constructed on concrete pads that are at least six inches and reinforced for heavy-duty use. All hay and ranch equipment can be stored beneath a roof. Contact Howard W. Hood at 830-739-3815. he pronghorn buck in my neighbor’s pasture methodically rubbed his jaw on tall stalks of dead careless weed. I’d stopped in the road to watch, out of old habit. The male paid no attention to the idling truck, but the five or six females in his harem flicked their ears toward me before daintily stepping away through the rocks and bear grass. I’m always happy to see pronghorn. They are handsome creatures, blond and white, with prominent almond-shaped eyes positioned on the sides of their skulls. Unlike any other native North American mammal, pronghorn have elements of both horns and antlers. Males, and some females, sport permanent, hornlike stubs atop their heads, over which the males
grow a keratinous black sheath that they shed annually, like antlers. All pronghorn also possess a white patch of fur about the size of an LP that surrounds their tails. When alarmed, that patch stands on end, a signal to others that danger is nigh. But when they flee, pronghorn don’t bound and leap like deer, which they somewhat resemble. Rather, they run flat-out from a threat, their speed their greatest asset. They’re the continent’s fastest land animal, capable of sprinting 45 miles per hour and able to run nearly that fast for miles and miles. Commonly referred to as pronghorn antelope, pronghorn aren’t antelope at all. They sit on an evolutionary branch all their own, a throwback to 12,000 years ago when lions, cheetahs, and saber-toothed cats roamed North America, preying on pronghorn. “Pronghorn are the only living member of their family left,” says Whitney Gann, a pronghorn researcher with the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross
State University, in Alpine. “They’re relics of the Pleistocene Epoch, unique to North America.” In his book The Great Plains, Texas naturalist Walter Prescott Webb observed that a pronghorn was “the purest type of Plains animal . . . peculiarly well fitted for its chosen environment.” An estimated 35 million pronghorn once ranged over most of the western United States, including two thirds of Texas, and into Canada and Mexico. But by 1915, overhunting and changes in habitat had reduced the U.S. population to about 13,000, prompting a conservation effort that revived the herds, including those in Texas, which by then existed only in the Panhandle and the Trans-Pecos. At their height, in the eighties, Trans-Pecos pronghorn totaled 17,000. By 2012, however, that population had plummeted to a historic low of 2,700, for reasons that weren’t immediately apparent. “When pronghorn are doing well, the grassland

is doing well,” Gann says. “When they’re no longer present, that’s an indication something’s really wrong.” Scientists, landowners, volunteers, and Texas Parks and Wildlife personnel sprang into action. An obvious issue was the lingering drouth that robbed pronghorn and other grazers of food resources. Necropsies of hunter-killed pronghorn also revealed that these Trans-Pecos specimens contained six times as many bloodsucking, anemiainducing barber pole worms as their Panhandle counterparts. Why did their parasite loads skyrocket? Fences, mostly. Pronghorn evolved in a vast, open plain. Although they’re capable of jumping, they prefer not to, or it doesn’t occur to them that they can. Consequently, they typically crawl under fences when they encounter them. But net wire fences meant to hold goats or sheep and barbed wire fences with strands low

to the ground stymie them. Over time, a lot of West Texas acreage has been crossfenced into smaller pastures, which has further fragmented the pronghorn’s range. If herds are unable to scramble under a fence, they’ve been known to bottleneck against fence lines, starving, even though there’s good forage just on the other side. “The fences prevented them from moving as they should,” Gann explains. “They ended up depleting their resources and eating where they were defecating. That’s where the worms became an issue.” To fortify the Trans-Pecos herds, teams
over the past six years have captured healthy Panhandle pronghorn, 636 of them, and relocated them to the desert grasslands near Marfa and Marathon. Landowners were educated about the need to provide under-fence corridors; some swapped out fencing types, or allowed Gann and her crew to stretch fences’ bottom wires upward to create crawl spaces. More than 1,500 such modifications have been made. Satellite collars on translocated animals pinpoint where problem spots occur. And the initiatives are working. The most recent census indicates about six thousand pronghorn are now present in the TransPecos. “It’s a good feeling,” Gann says. “We’re trending in the right direction.” My interest in pronghorn began because of a dog. Years ago, when I first moved to Marfa, jobless, with time on my hands and without much money, my only friend for hundreds of miles was Jip, the red heeler

I’d brought with me. Like many of her kind, Jip was unsuitable as a pet and illequipped for life in a one-room apartment. Bred to herd cattle, she had the will to stare down a bull and the unquenchable desire to group people and other animals into compact units. Her high-octane intensity called for miles of walking every day. Eventually I won permission to walk her on private property at the edge of town. One evening, we crested a rise on the land’s perimeter and before us was a group of pronghorn, perhaps ten females and a male. The buck saw me first and blew out a snort, flagged his white rump, and raced high-headed with the others toward the fence line. They crowded at the fence, taking turns going under. Jip arrived, eager to goad everyone into an orderly bunch, and the buck looked at the dog, looked at his girls filing under the fence, and then reared up on his hind legs and came down with some force, bonking Jip soundly on the head with his own head. The dazed dog staggered like a character in a cartoon. Once her ears stopped ringing and she could hear me yelling, she yielded to my judgment for the first time in her life and returned to me, her urge to chase pronghorn forever expunged. The pronghorn finished their fence crossing and, the danger clearly neutralized, relaxed and bent their heads to graze once again. We saw this group almost daily for months. Upon spotting them, we’d stand, sometimes for an hour, Jip hunkered in my shadow, working her nose and reading

information on the wind. I didn’t have that sort of insight, but I learned a few things. I learned, for instance, that a sentinel seemed to keep watch while everyone else grazed, napped, or played. When a threat was conveyed, the whole group could be in flight within a heartbeat, never awkwardly bumping into each other even at high speed, able to turn or shift as a group with invisible intelligence. Walking directly at the herd alarmed them, but they were much less aware of me while I stood still. It was possible to move closer and still hide in plain sight by sliding a foot or two forward when they glanced in the opposite direction. What’s more, they were inquisitive. A pronghorn, when trying to figure me out, would sometimes stamp a front leg, cough, and jerk its head slightly. To see what would happen, I’d make the same sound and gestures. Much staring ensued. In this fashion, the pronghorn would step forward and stop, step forward and stop until it was close enough that I could see the creature blink, appreciate the perfect curve of its ears, and admire the willow slimness of its legs. Invariably, in the midst of this dreamy, slowmotion mutual examination, Jip would scratch an ear, stand up, or otherwise shift around. Our reverie dissolved. The pronghorn zeroed in on the reality of the human and dog before it and streaked to its herd mates as smooth and sure as a speeding arrow. Much later, I felt vindicated while reading Webb’s comments on “antelopes.” “With the antelope, curiosity and caution are
strangely mingled,” he wrote. “Hunters could draw antelope within range by firing guns. The animals were attracted by the dust made by the bullet striking the ground, but paid no attention to the sound of the gun. They were ruled by sight and curiosity.” My red heeler is long gone, but the pronghorn remain. Often they’ll trickle from the neighbor’s hill to our pasture, before wandering east, toward the golf course, and back again. Once, during a purple sunset, my son and I sat horseback and watched a young interloper from a band of bachelors sneak into the harem of an established buck. The buck bolted for him and chased the interloper in relentless circles around us, around the harem, around the pasture, the interloper bleating a rhythmic mer, mer, mer as it sped crazily from its aggressor. We’ve seen a lone pronghorn buck blast past our place headed east until it was out of sight, running full tilt to or from something unseen and unknown. We’ve seen does lying at rest together, legs folded as neatly as clasped hands, chewing their cuds in companionable quiet. A doe sporting ear tags and a radio collar—one of the Panhandle transplants—drank from our trough one afternoon while we fed chickens. And just now, from the vantage of the barn’s back door, I saw a pronghorn doe glide under the pipe fence and pause. From the spot where she had hidden it amid the grass, her baby rose on skyscraper legs, wobbled for an instant, and then walked steadily to its mother. v

Marfa Shorthorns six-man football game starts with hand over heart and the American flag undulating sedately above the scoreboard. The student band warbles the National Anthem. Our new band director plays a trumpet. His notes are sure and correct, and the band gamely follows his lead. This is Marfa’s fourth year as a six-man team. For a long time, the high school student body hovered right around 104 kids, making it one of the smallest

THE JOYS AND SORROWS OF SIX-MAN FOOTBALL. BY ST E R RY BU TCH E R 1A schools in the state. Four years ago, the school’s population dipped below 100, and, per UIL classification, we’ve played six-man ball ever since. Six-man is a different stripe of football than the usual eleven-man version. At 80 yards long and 40 yards wide, the six-man field is shorter and narrower. A down requires 15 yards of advancement instead of 10. Field goals are four points. An extrapoint kick earns two points; a conversion by carry is worth one. Any player may receive a pass. This is a running game and often high scoring too, with a built-in mercy rule. If a team is 45 points ahead at any point from halftime on, the contest is over. It’s called being “45-ed,” and it happens fairly frequently. Six-man is exhilarating. With so few guys on the field, there aren’t many grinding drives for minor yardage. Teams have that whole field to make something happen, and the plays tend to be open to wild improvisation. At a snap, Marfa zags and zips; the opponent roars in; the action is obscured by a clutch of players; there’s a wobbly, ohjeez, end-over-end toss; and suddenly a Shorthorn is streaking down the sideline with the ball safely tucked. Hope, despair, and then hope again. “It’s definitely a faster pace and quite a bit of room for twelve guys to run around on,” explained Wayland Jenkins, the Shorthorns’ head coach and athletics director. “Six-man is like fast-break basketball except it’s fastbreak football—go, go, go all the time.”
