“Our Company measures success differently. With no sales quotas to meet, and no proprietary products to market, our singular focus remains the long-term interests of the families we serve. Which is why our portfolios are customized for each client. Why our relationships span generations. And why our success is measured not in the business we gain, but in the clients we keep.”

Simmsgeiger, “Algae, Love it or Leave It”. aquatics management company experienced with various rural water treatment issues since 1973. Another article covers two of my favorite subjects: the ever-fascinating outdoorsman, conservationist, and Former United States President Theodore Roosevelt, and beautiful, vintage shotguns. The amazing story of how Former President Roosevelt’s shotgun found a home in the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas is a classic Texas tale. As this rainy, verdant Texas spring comes to an end and we look forward to the prospect of summer, we also welcome back home to Farm & Ranch our newest staff member, Regional Sales and Marketing Director Jamie Destouet. In this issue, she has penned a broker spotlight on Tyler Jacobs, a Broker at Hall and Hall with a lifelong experience in rural Texas real estate. His experience and leadership have been integral in the company’s expansion of new Texas offices. Our other big news this season is the April launch of our website, farmandranch.com, which we think is a home run. Google has a speed analytic tool which measures on 1-100 scale the speed of Web searches, and our current ranking is a 96! We’ve also just announced a new partnership with REALSTACK, a prominent data exchange company that will allow our clients to load onto multiple sites with one upload.

We love to hear from our readers and advertisers, and we particularly loved a letter from Suzanne Allen Sabo of Allen-Guerra Architecture, who wrote to say that her national Farm & Ranch ad has produced three new ranch jobs in the past nine months. Keep those emails and letters coming; we love to know how Texas Farm & Ranch and our national edition create positive impacts.

Photos by Ralph Duke on behalf of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum
There was a time when he was a kid and his family had a summertime fireworks stand outside Panhandle, Texas, that Jason Roselius would be giving away assorted firecrackers and pop bottle rockets out the back of the stand to his friends. In some ways he changed over the years, and in some ways, he didn’t. Roselius was always looking for ways to help friends and others, but eventually he did learn the value of money and the price that went with it. n 2010, by then a renowned attorney in Oklahoma, Jason sat with his father, Jay Roselius, at a James D. Julia firearms auction in Fairfield, Maine. An item for bid was a shotgun – and not just any shotgun either but one that was reputed to be the most historic American shotgun in existence.
I
32 Volume 92 Texas Farm&Ranch
“There was no doubt he was going to get it,” Jay said. It was a Fox “F” Grade shotgun, owned by former president Teddy Roosevelt. It was presented to Roosevelt by the president of the Fox Gun Company, and one that was used on his 1909 African safari, the most famous of all African safaris of American’s most accomplished hunting president.
ROOSEVELT GUN on loan to Panhandle Plains Historical Museum By JON MARK BEILUE
Jason’s father said he didn’t scratch his nose and didn’t so much as twitch as the auction soon dwindled to his son and one other determined bidder. In the end, the gun that Roosevelt once said “there was no better ever made,” was Roselius’. The cost was steep. Including the buyers premium, it went for $862,500. It was the most expensive shotgun ever sold at auction, and most expensive by a long way. The previous record was $287,500 in 2007 for a shotgun made for the Czar of Russia. “I thought it best that we get out of there,” Jay said, “but he kept buying.” Jason, who graduated with degrees in history and political science in college, also purchased a number of prized Colt pistols and revolvers that only added to his collection because of his admiration for the engraving of Gustav Young. But flags and other memorabilia struck a chord with Roselius. He even had a dental chair of one Doc Holliday. “Just anything connected with history, he loved,” said Reva, his mother. But this purchase was different. Teddy Roosevelt’s “F” Grade shotgun was his Holy Grail. A Japanese buyer offered Roselius $1 million for it, but he politely turned him away. This shotgun was really not Roselius’ – at least that’s the
way he saw it. It was the peoples. And he was determined to see that it one day come to the Texas Panhandle, that place that was home.
Love for History and Outdoors
Jason Roselius died much the way he lived – by putting himself second, by helping others. He once stopped his truck when driving between his country home in Guthrie, Oklahoma and Oklahoma City because a charity was promoting a sale that was a fundraiser. Roselius was curious. When he got all the information he needed, and felt good about the charity, he wrote the group a check for $5,000 and went on his way. In January 2018, Roselius was talking on the phone with law partner Jack Mattingly, Jr., from his ranch home in Guthrie. Then Mattingly recalls that Roselius abruptly said, “Hey, I gotta go.” Law enforcement authorities believe that Roselius saw his two dogs struggling to get out of an adjacent icy pond. Further, authorities believe Roselius entered the cold water to rescue his dogs. Neither the dogs nor Jason survived. He was 48. “It just feels like the stars are falling,” Mattingly told Oklahoma City’s KOCO. “He was one of the most loving people. He helped so many people.” FarmAndRanch.com

His death devastated all who knew him. He and Amy, his second wife, had been married only five weeks. Theirs was a happy blended family of four children. Amy was also from Panhandle, Texas, 28 miles northeast of Amarillo. Roselius was an overachieving football player, a bright student who went to state in ag competition and industrial arts.
law. He always wanted to speak for those who couldn’t speak for themselves.”
“Jason latched on to history in high school,” said Liz Hughes, his sister. “That was his passion.”
lawsuit. His clients also included those in personal injury and wrongful death. At the time, Roselius won the largest single wrongful death settlement in Texas history. It didn’t take long for Roselius to establish a reputation and carve for himself a lucrative career even though he was content to keep a low profile.
So was the outdoors. Jay and his son hunted as much as they could. He developed an appreciation for wildlife and guns.
Roselius followed some scholarships to West Texas A&M, 45 miles away in Canyon. He threw himself into just about any organization that would have him. He followed his passion with a double major of history and political science. “Jason always said that if you wanted to know about the future, just look at the past,” Jay said. Dr. Pete Peterson, a WTAMU history professor, encouraged Roselius to pursue a career in law. That resonated with him. Roselius would graduate magna cum laude with a 3.95 GPA in 1991. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma Law School four years later. “Jason could never tolerate a bully, going back to high school,” his sister said. “That’s why he was drawn to the 34 Volume 92 Texas Farm&Ranch
Roselius found his role in representing the little man, the oppressed. He led and won numerous record-breaking state and national class-action lawsuits. He was the youngest attorney in the state of Oklahoma to win a class-action
“He was the motor behind the train of his law firm,” said Jay, himself a Carson County judge in the Texas Panhandle for 16 years. “But he never wanted the notoriety. He didn’t want his name out there.”
A Shotgun for The People
An inscription on one of the barrels reads: “Made Expressly for Hon. Theodore Roosevelt.” The other barrel reads: “By A.H. Fox Gun Company, Philadelphia USA.” In addition to taking the shotgun on an African safari, he took it on an illfated 1913 expedition to the Amazon that nearly killed him. He got malaria, and a superficial leg wound developed into a serious infection. Roosevelt lost 50 pounds, became somewhat delusional and later told friends the trip may have taken 10 years off his life.
In 2010, when Roselius saw the catalog of the James D. Julia, Inc. firearms auction and saw the Teddy Roosevelt’s prized shotgun was one of the items, he grabbed his dad and told them they were going on a trip to Maine. Roselius had a collection of antique firearms, but nothing approaching a mix of famous owner and famous gun. “He loved Teddy Roosevelt,” said Reva. “He was absolutely one of his favorite men in history. He loved the lessons Roosevelt tried to portray to everybody.” Roosevelt described the shotgun to friends as the finest and most beautiful gun he’d seen. The gun features intricate scroll work, oak leaves and a gold inlaid hunting dog on each side of the frame.
Roosevelt, who was president from 1901 to 1909, died at age 60 in 1919. “Out of everything Jason had – and he was not materialistic – but this was his most prized and emotional possession,” Liz Hughes said. “And it was just because of who Roosevelt was and the history behind the man.” But Roselius bought it not so much for himself, but so he could share it with those who had that same love of history and firearms that he did.

For the last seven years, Roosevelt’s shotgun has had a home at the Cody Firearms Museum at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. It has had a place alongside Roosevelt’s Winchester Model 1895 Lever Action Sporting Rifle, one that Roosevelt called “big medicine for lions.” But in October, the shotgun made the trip 932 miles to the south from Cody to Canyon, Texas and West Texas A&M, Roselius’ alma mater. On May 28th and going forward, it will

be on display at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum where it now resides. When Mike Hughes, Roselius’ brother-in-law, told Jack Miller the shotgun might be available for display, the presidentelect of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society board of trustees was ecstatic. “That’s all I needed to hear,” he said. “It’s iconic. It’s one of a kind. It’s Roosevelt’s gun. Then the story of Jason and his
life, and his wanting it at WT, it’s just something that needed to be here.”
become a destination for history buffs, gun collectors and Roosevelt scholars.
For Carol Lovelady, the executive director of the PPHM, having the shotgun as an exhibit, she said, is incalculable.
“Receiving the gun under any circumstances would be a coup, but knowing a graduate of WT purchased this shotgun with the intention of having it displayed at the museum makes its arrival more significant.”
“We are just extremely excited,” she said. “PPHM has long been known for having the best gun collection in Texas, but with the arrival of Teddy Roosevelt’s shotgun – considered a national treasure – the museum has
All of those with a personal stake know the Roosevelt shotgun finally coming to Roselius’ home area is a fitting tribute. “This is an extraordinary thing,” Jay said. “This is his home and where he started to college, and he just thought it would help the museum. That’s just the way he was.” The man who paid more than $850,000 for the most expensive auctioned shotgun in U.S. history never touched it. He never laid a hand on it, and his family knows he was just fine with that.

Supplemental Feed
and White-tailed Deer By Nicholas Kolbe, Real Estate Agent/Wildlife Consultant
In the past 30 years, supplemental feeding to assist white-tailed deer populations has become very popular and an increasing trend in Texas. Landowners and hunters across the state have seen the benefits that feeding has on their deer herds, not only in antler growth by males but body condition of animals and population densities as well. Though there are many benefits to supplemental feeding, there are also negative impacts and considerations to be made when deciding to implement a feeding program. From the literature and the vast amount of research on supplemental feeding in Texas, there are common themes and results expressed in the majority. One of the most important results seen from protein feeding and probably the main goal for most who utilize a supplemental feeding program is increased antler growth for male white-tailed deer. Given that nutrition in the environment fluctuates throughout the year due of stressors like a drought or wildfire, supplemental feed provides a consistent available food source that can be used for antler growth when environmental conditions are tough. When allowed the opportunity to consume protein feed during key periods like March through September when growing antlers, males are known to increase 78 Volume 92 Texas Farm&Ranch
antler size substantially versus those that do not have access to supplemental feed. They can utilize the additional protein rich food source along with their natural habitat forage to increase antler growth and reach their genetic potential. Supplemental feeding also helps males and females maintain optimum body condition throughout the year. Males following the breeding season are drawn down from the rut and are looking to bounce back with the spring greenup. Providing supplemental nutrition during late winter and early spring allow bucks to regain body weight lost during rut; therefore, those who supplemental feed usually see lower postrut mortality in their buck cohort. The same idea
applies to pre-rut periods. Males that have access to feed throughout the summer and into fall tend to be in a much healthier condition in terms of body weight and fat reserves than animals not consuming feed. It is also very important to note the dynamic environmental conditions of Texas. Since Texas varies in precipitation amount and timing throughout the year, providing feed keeps males in great physical condition when droughts occur. Similarly, these concepts hold true for the female cohort of a population as well except in greater detail. Providing optimum nutrition for the female cohort of a white-tailed deer population is so important and is often shadowed by the benefits for males. Males need roughly 12-16% protein for antler growth, which is consistent for most supplemental feed. In comparison, females need upwards of 30-32% protein for successful conception, gestation and lactation to recruit fawns into the population. Does are constantly under nutritional stress! In the winter, does are bred and gestate young for 200 days after date of conception. These days are crucial as females need all the nutrition they
can get to develop not one, but two, fawns (in most cases, does give birth to twins). Following birth, the female lactates to provide nutrients to fawn(s) for 2-4 month. Lactation and weaning is probably the most stringent time of the year for females, as lactation is very costly and nutrient dependent. Simultaneously, while weaning fawns, the female must keep her body weight at a healthy level to prepare for mating season from November-February. As you can see, there is a much higher demand on females to consume a more protein rich diet throughout the year for necessary life processes than there is to simply grow antlers for males. Most who supplemental feed do not realize that feeding impacts the female and juvenile aspect of a deer population much greater than the male cohort. As a result, landowners and hunters who supplemental feed tend to see heavier and healthier bodied females and a higher juvenile recruitment ratio when conducting deer surveys in the fall. An important point that I touched on briefly above is the benefit that supplemental feed has during critical periods such as a drought. With low, or in some cases no precipitation during the year and especially during the growing season,
the habitat will lack in forage and nutrition that is needed by males, females and fawns. When this occurs, landowners will go through what can be characterized as “bust” period. This is when the population takes a major hit and the whitetailed deer population density can see a decrease due to lack of nutrition in forage availability. It is important to note that the opposite of bust would be a “boom” where there is an excess of nutrition in the environment that animals take advantage
of and an increase in population density can be seen. Utilizing supplemental feed can smooth out that “boom or bust” cycle to see a more consistent population change from year to year in a deer herd. In a drought year, supplemental feed acts as a buffer and provides the nutrition to your males and females needed for necessary life processes such as antler growth and lactation that the habitat is unable to provide. As we can see there are many positive outcomes of supplemental feeding that attract its usage by private landowners including increased antler growth by males and improved recruitment of juveniles by females. All is well in the whitetailed deer world right? However, providing supplemental feed for deer is much more complex than simply filling protein feeders and growing larger antlers. Feeding induces negative effects on a white-tailed deer population that most of the time are overlooked by a landowner but need to be addressed. Negative effects are things such as a more intense management program with a long-term commitment, high risk of disease transmission, increased cost to the landowner, increased numbers of non-target animals and probably most important, dependence. Deciding to start supplemental feeding on your property does not simply mean start feeding one day and expect results the next. There is a long-term commitment and effort that is needed by the landowner to provide feed continuously to see the end results that are desired. Deer do not naturally consume feed from a protein feeder, so they take time to learn and adjust to a supplemental food source; therefore, there tends to be a response time of approximately 2 to 3 years that is needed to start seeing changes in your overall deer population. For example, say that a landowner plans to start feeding this upcoming spring-summer. It will take animals time to find FarmAndRanch.com
79
the feed and start visiting sites regularly. This may not happen automatically and may take a year or more, potentially until 2019 for animals to adjust. Once consumption of feed does begin to occur consistently, property owners and managers would then hope to start seeing responses in those population characteristics of interest like antler growth, juvenile recruitment and overall body condition. However, seeing responses is not immediate either. It will take time and accurate data recording by the land owner to compare the results of those population characteristics between pre- and post-supplemental feeding periods. Ok so we now have a growing deer population with more bucks surviving after the rut, all deer are increasing their body weight and females are consistently giving birth to twins. More deer is better, right? Well, it depends. Once that deer population does begin to respond to supplemental feed, there will be an increase in the number of deer, as I briefly stated above. Over time, supplemental feed artificially increases a deer population to a greater number than what the environment can sustain or, in the biological world, greater than carrying capacity. With an increased population, animals will begin to apply greater pressure on the habitat than what the environment can sustain long term. This brings me to my next point. A growing deer population needs to be regulated by a management program to handle the increasing deer density on your property. This includes a harvest management program to remove the adequate number of deer per year to decrease the stress excess animals place on the habitat. Doing so will keep your deer population at a healthy population density as to not over stress the 80 Volume 92 Texas Farm&Ranch
habitat and will also decrease density dependent stressors like intraspecific competition and disease transmission. Conversely, unregulated deer populations are at a much higher risk of reduction do to such stressors. White-tailed deer are susceptible to carry a variety of diseases such as rabies, epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD), bluetongue and most recently discovered in white-tailed deer
regularly and congregate in high densities. This poses a problem for populations that may carry a disease. With elevated interaction between animals at high density feeding sites, the chances of diseases transmission increase drastically. Studies have shown a much higher risk of disease transmission associated with supplemental fed deer populations versus non-supplemental fed populations (Sorensen et al. 2014, Thompson et al. 2008, Miller et. al. 2003). For this exact reason, supplemental feeding is banned in many states around the country to try and reduce the spread of disease within populations. Caution needs to be taken when deciding to implement a supplemental feeding program. Be sure to take the time and observe the animals that you harvest. Note any abscesses on animals and the body condition they are in when recording your harvest data. Consult with your local Texas Parks and Wildlife Biologist or private lands biologist about testing for CWD in animals that are taken from your property. Keeping track of such records will allow you to stay on top of any diseases that may be affecting your population. Supplemental feeding can do wonders for a deer population when implemented correctly and monitored. It can help those landowners and managers finally start to see the results they desire.
in Texas, chronic wasting disease (CWD). These diseases are naturally occurring in whitetailed deer populations and are mechanisms of population regulation by mother nature. Most diseases found in white-tailed deer are transmittable and are most commonly done so by direct contact between individuals. When protein feed is introduced into a deer population, animals begin to visit feedings sites
However, these results will come at a steep price. Protein feed is not cheap and feeding year-round can add up to be an expensive bill. Understanding what your budget is when deciding to supplemental feed is important because it gives you an idea on how much you will be able to feed as well as when you will be able to feed. Often, landowners decide to simply feed during the most important times of the year such as from spring and through early
fall when males are allocating nutrition to antler growth and females are lactating after giving birth. For landowners that are concerned with cost, limiting feeding to only spring and through early fall tends to be adequate for providing necessary supplementation as nutritional requirements for both sexes tends to be highest here compared to winter months. Lastly, supplemental feed tends to increase populations of non-targets on your property and around your feeders. These animals include raccoons, opossums, rabbits, feral pigs, migratory birds such as grackles, brown-headed cowbirds and others. These animals tend to be general, opportunistic feeders and will jump at the chance at a free meal. Understanding this, landowners tend to try and offer feed where only white-tailed deer can access it. Installing protein feeders that are elevated off the ground can deter small mammals from climbing up and having a buffet. By enclosing the feeder in a feed pen, you can decrease feral swine from making themselves at home at your feeder. Utilizing these strategies can ensure that the majority of your feed is only being consumed by white-tailed deer or target animal. I would like to finish by stating that a supplemental feeding program should be just that, “supplemental. The habitat should be the most important aspect of sound white-tailed deer management. A supplemental feeding program
should assist in reaching the goals of a landowner, not dependent upon. White-tailed deer need a variety of different nutrients to survive and meet their nutritional requirements for necessary life processes. Supplemental feed does not give deer 100% of what they need. Supplemental feed merely compliments what the range habitat can provide for those animals. Deer will still de-
and more importantly, will be a waste of money. It is very important to use wildlife management tools such as population and vegetation surveys to stay on top of where your deer herd is in terms of numbers and the affect that they are having on your habitat. In doing so as a landowner or hunter, you will begin meeting your property goals.
pend on their habitat as a necessary food source and in fact, will depend upon it more heavily as deer numbers begin to increase. If a deer herd is on poor range conditions due to overpopulation or poor habitat management, a supplemental feeding program will more than likely not help

DO ROADRUNNERS
T
QUAIL POPULATIONS?
he Northern Bobwhite quail; ever elusive, its cryptic camouflage making it almost invisible in the South Texas brush county and Rolling Plains ecoregions. Mainly a ground dwelling bird however, when threatened, takes flight generally making a beeline to the nearest low hanging cover or soaring a few hundred yards to escape predation. Bobwhite quail are omnivorous species consuming a high percentage of protein rich insects during the juvenile stage and moving toward a more highly concentrated seed/mast died in the adult stage of life. Enter the Greater roadrunner or also known as the “Chaparral Cock, Paisano and Snakebird”. One of the fastest native ground dwelling birds in Texas reaching speeds up to 25 mph. It, like the Bobwhite, also has suited camouflage for Texas’s habitats making it undetectable in dense cover. Roadrunners spend most of their life on the ground as well and, like the bobwhite, can fly long distances to escape predators if threatened. The roadrunner is mainly an opportunistic omnivore, consuming items such as insects, small mammals, reptiles and mast from vegetation. Oh, and did I mention they also consume quail! So, who wins? In the past year I have had a lot of curious and some concerned landowners ask, “Do roadrunner eat quail and their eggs? Are roadrunners impacting my quail population? Should I be concerned about the number of roadrunners on my property?” Well, let’s take a look. As stated above, the roadrunner is a very opportunistic omnivore. It also possesses highly acidic enzymes within its digestive track enabling it to consume and metabolize just about whatever it can get its beak on. Mainly these items include insects as this food source is readily available on the range throughout the year. Studies such as D.M. Gorsuch’s of the U.S. biological survey report printed in 1932 showed that most of the roadrunner’s diet is made up of this easily catchable and abundant food source. From the study
By: Nicholas R. Kolbe M.S., Wildlife Consultant/Real Estate Agent
approximately 100 roadrunners were captures and stomach contents examined. On average approximately 62% of the birds’ stomachs contained insects such as grasshoppers and beetles. Reptiles and small mammals such as snakes, lizards, and rodents was the second tier of food supply making up about 30% of the stomach matter. No evidence of quail or quail eggs were examined within the stomachs. Other very interested species that were found was a cactus wren, an unidentified sparrow and a meadow lark. Lastly and a very interesting note in this article stated, I saw a roadrunner following a family of 12 newly hatched Gambel quail and their parents, as they fed through the grass. This appeared to be a splendid opportunity for the roadrunner to secure one of the chicks, for although the adult quail knew of its presence, they gave little attention. The roadrunner’s interest centered upon those grasshoppers that the quail started up and that flew beyond their reach. This continued until the roadrunner darted immediately in front of the cock quail to get a grasshopper, whereupon the cock turned and savagely attacked the roadrunner, who escaped by jumping into a mesquite, from which it sailed into an adjoining wash. On many other occasions a like proceeding has been observed, and it is my conviction that the roadrunner follows such feeding quail for grasshoppers thus started up. (Gorsuch 1932) Another study conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and published in 1999 examined the stomach contents of 118 roadrunners in the South Texas ecoregion. This study too found that insects, reptiles and small mammals made up most of the food source for the bird. They did however find the remains of two northern bobwhite quail chicks out of the 118 birds dissected (Kazmaier et al. 1999).
FarmAndRanch.com 111
112 Volume 92 Texas Farm&Ranch
Finally, two other studies, one published by Felix Hernandez in 1999 and the other by Dale Rollins and John P. Carroll in the 2001, showed that majority of predation on quail and their nesting sites occurred from small mammals and accipiter species. Mammals that had the most impact from Hernandez’s study were raccoons which accounted for 91% of quail nest predation. Other mammals included skunks, feral swine, opossums, foxes and coyotes. Hernandez did note three occasions where roadrunners were photographed but never caught raiding a quail nest. From Rollin’s and Carroll’s study the accipiter that had the most impact on the direct consumption of quail was the Northern harrier (Rollins and Carroll 2001, Hernandez et al. 1997). From the literature and evidence provided, it seems mesomammals and accipiters tend to play a larger role in impacting quail populations than roadrunners do. Heck, roadrunners may even be a secret ally to the ever so sought-after quail as they are proven to consume many of the known nest predators like snakes and rodents. Let’s also put into perspective the other factors that are much more influential on quail populations like climate and habitat. In my previous articles on quail species in Texas and from other items of literature, quail nesting success and survival is highly correlated to rainfall throughout the year. Without the necessary and timely precipitation such as in spring and summer, food availability for birds is scarce and negatively affects adult survival, nesting success and of course juvenile recruitment. Temperature is also a key factor as we have seen through this cold and dry 2017-18 winter. Quail are hardy birds and generally a few freezing temperature days do not directly kill birds as long as adequate cover is present for roosting and loafing. However, with the winter that we have had this year and prolonged freezing periods of up to 3+ days, this environment can directly kill birds especially if the range lacks appropriate cover. These drastic fringed conditions also compound the problem with the lack of food available during the winter. Quail
are using up to 25% more energy to stay alive during the winter. If range conditions are poor and quail lack the food supply and necessary cover, they will suffer through these times. I am not saying that roadrunners do not consume adult birds. I am not saying that roadrunners do not consume juvenile or newly hatched birds, which I believe is much more probable than consuming an adult and also with the evidence provided in the above research. I suspect that given the opportunity and the right circumstances, such as a quail chick just so happens to jump into the roadrunner’s mouth, I am sure the roadrunner would be gracious for the easy meal (might be best to keep those genetics out of the gene pool anyway). However, the research shows that roadrunners really do not have that great of an impact on quail populations. There are many other easily obtainable and more abundant food sources on the range for them to pursue other than quail that, generally, are scarce in numbers as it is and much more agile than grasshoppers. Habitat, rainfall and temperature have a much greater hand in influencing quail numbers. If you are looking to correctly manage your quail population, I encourage you to take a look at other much important factors such as improving habitat. Correct habitat is one item that a landowner or manager can manipulate and improve. This item, behind rainfall which all you can do is pray for, is the most important limiting factor for quail. With proper habitat comes necessary food supply, appropriate cover for nesting, loafing and escaping, and also adequate space for dispersal. All of these factors when present on the range will buffer your quail population when times are difficult. Without correct habitat, trying to limit predator populations is a waste of time and money. Nutrients Aquatic nutrient sources can include sediment and vegetation in the lake, and run-off water from surrounding turf areas. Effluent from sewage, waste water treatment plants and septic systems. Other sources of excess nutrients can also be from agriculture, chemical discharge and homeowners. Sediment can accumulate on lake bottoms at rate of one to five inches per year! Nutrient runoff can especially become a problem during dry weather, where there is an increase in evaporation and a decrease in nutrient flow. With an increasing amount of nutrients accumulating, it provides a food source for algae eventually increasing the likelihood and spread of algal blooms. The decomposition of algae and other plant matter releases nutrients and adds to the biomass of the lake. Oxygen Increased levels of dissolved oxygen is beneficial for water quality and fish and plant health. Decreased dissolved oxygen levels will increase stress on fish. Aside from fish and plants, bacteria also require oxygen in order to breakdown organic matter. With low levels, bacteria will begin to utilize other nutrients such as nitrates and sulfates which will begin to disrupt the balance of the entire ecosystem. Poor Water Quality • Algae/weeds • Odors and poisonous gases • Soluble phosphorus
Good Water Quality • Increased oxygen (aeration) • Minimization of nutrients • Little or no algae and macrophyte growth
• Iron and heavy metals • Fish kills • Insect infestation • Excess sediment and organic matter buildup Change of Seasons The summertime beauty and function of a pond, lake or water feature can be seriously threatened by problems that develop during the winter. Algae, aquatic weeds, fish kills, and odors develop due to a buildup of debris and a lack of oxygen conditions present during fall and winter. The time to start preventing summer disasters is spring. FarmAndRanch.com 143
Many things happen during the fall and winter that disrupt the equilibrium of water bodies. Some of the most obvious are increased debris from trees and activity from migrating and native waterfowl. Some occurrences are not so noticeable. Precipitation increases during the winter. Rainfall, which contains a bountiful nitrogen picked up from the atmosphere, can change the chemical balance (pH) of water bodies. In addition, runoff from rainfall moves fertilizers and debris from the watershed into the lake. Proper maintenance in the spring can reduce those negatives and result in a beautiful, healthy lake or pond during the summer.

In order to sustain a beautiful water body year-round, a preventative approach is highly recommended. Some factors to remember: • Algae, aquatic weeds, fish kills and odors are all caused by a buildup of debris and a lack of oxygen, which develop during the fall and winter. • Spring lake maintenance is necessary for an attractive lake in summer. • To reduce organic matter suspended in the water, adjust the pH of water to favor chemical breakdown and improve oxygen content to maintain a lake’s appearance. • Lakes are worth the investment in maintenance by knowledgeable professionals. Algae Control & Treatment Solutions If it is too late for any preventative measures, how do you treat an ugly algae problem? For best results, a highly refined copper chelate is the best, an option being F-30 Algae Control. It’s environmentally friendly and is cost effective. Copper has been given a bad rap lately, and for good reason. For years, applications of copper sulfate have been used to control algae, but copper sulfate in a non-chelated form will produce copper carbonates and other toxic precipitates that will accumulate on the pond or lake bottom, causing disposal nightmares and stifling aquatic life. With a chelated formula, nuisance algae are directly targeted while other aquatic plants and organisms are left unharmed in the process when properly applied in sections. For small to medium sized ponds, one can try the Easy Pond Kit. The kit was specialized for home owners, and contains essential components to pond health: enzymes, bacteria, and minerals. It provides solutions

for water quality and clarity, excess organic contaminants by eliminating sludge at the bottom and foul odors. Be aggressive when tackling your problem. Follow all the manufacturer’s directions for application, and if you are unsure of dosage rates, or would like some application advice, contact the manufacturer’s technical support for additional tips Love it or Leave it? Although algae are engaged in the responsibility of giving life, the same processes they utilize to benefit an ecosystem can also seek to overwhelm it if left to its own devices and quickly turn a placid lake into an unsightly stink. For those who manage large or small water features, finding a balance is key. Algae is everywhere. Without it, our waters would not sustain life, nor would we benefit from its countless qualities and beauty. But what happens when an ecosystem is stuck with imbalance? Reflection ponds turn into stagnant bowls of pea soup, irrigation equipment becomes clogged with slime and even minor growth around the shoreline can decrease the water flow and trap human and natural debris. So, how do you control a plant controlled by billions of years of evolution? The answer is to find respect and understanding. Through education and following these few simple guidelines, one can learn to manage and live in harmony with this prolific and essential part of our complex ecosystem: • Consult with an experienced aquatic pest control advisor. • Establish a history by noting algae growth season after season. • Learn to anticipate and begin treatment in advance. You may wonder: “Yes, I’ve experienced some or all of the problems mentioned above, but no one is complaining and it is not hurting anything, right?” The answer is that every body of water, from the smallest pond to long, winding rivers has a life span. Eventually the proliferates and dies at season’s end, forming sludge. Left untreated, a few feet of water can easily sustain growth of several tons of algae a season. Sooner than later, water volume will decrease substantially, necessitating dredging long before its time. FarmAndRanch.com 145
