It was a picture-perfect day. An amazing, unmatchable, blue sky filled with magnificent clouds, which have a life all their own. The kind of day for which Montana is famous. As I stood there taking it all in, I felt like I had stepped into a real live picture postcard...

town of Big Timber. Driving down McLeod Street was like taking a step back in time. The historic buildings, the homes, the old Grand Hotel, all looked like the back lot for an old Western movie. Located in Sweet Grass County, Big Timber was established in 1889. History abounds here. The town is friendly and family oriented; the hospitality warm and welcoming. On the last weekend in June the town celebrates with a parade through town and a rodeo on Saturday, a tradition since the early 1900s. Floats, the high school band, horses, antique cars, and faces of young and old with broad smiles make this a unique and wonderful experience to celebrate our nation’s birthday. By the end of the day, I’d found a beautiful home. Our fantastic adventure had begun. The first winter will never be forgotten by any of us! It was wildly and unexpectedly beautiful, so clean, so crisp, so white, so much of it! We hiked and played in the snow. We fed and tended our horses while it snowed. We spent that entire first winter remembering how much we all love snow! Volume 41 Farm&Ranch West

eticulously assembled over the years, the 2,066-acre ranch is steeped
in history and abundant resources. It is a treasure trove of scenic beauty resting along the banks of the East Fork of the Virgin River, and surrounded by national park and recently designated wilderness areas. Yet, it offers convenient access to the charming town of Springdale, gateway to the park. Listing broker, Ken Mirr of Mirr Ranch Group
said, “Zion National Park adjoining the ranch has recently been expanded and it has been designated as wilderness; this, coupled with the adjoining Canaan Mountain Wilderness, virtually assures the pristine nature of the ranch forever. The adjoining stretches of the East Fork of the Virgin River and Shunes Creek are also now designated as ‘wild and scenic’, and the adjoining Parunuweep Canyon is a ‘natural research area’, as well. Basically, you can’t ask for better neighbors or protection than this, and this 2,066acre property is infinitely bigger as a result.” Jim Trees, a conservationist and founding member of the Grand Canyon Trust, and his visionary partner dedicated themselves to creating a national park of their own while maintaining the agricultural and cultural traditions of the Anasazi, Paiutes and pioneer settlers who farmed the ranch’s fertile virgin soils with pristine waters. Less than 10% of the ranch is protected by a conservation easement, leaving a blank canvas for the next owner to add their mark and continue the tradition of exemplary stewardship. It’s called one of the “Last Great Places”, a natural haven where a free-flowing river quenches an adjoining desert’s thirst; where diverse avian choirs join in chorus; where native wildlife thrives amidst a vast canvas of marsh, forest and desert; where towering mountains descend into lush valleys.
It boasts such introductions as “historic” and “important”, but life on the San Pedro River needs no introduction. The river speaks for itself. Stretching half a mile along the scenic, untamed river, the San Pedro River Ranch richly embraces its namesake with an infrastructure inspired by nature and a spirit fueled by the unique Southwestern lifestyle. Currently used as a private home and year-round horse breeding and boarding operation, the 256+acre ranch is bordered by State of Arizona and Nature Conservancy land, ensuring both privacy and protection from encroaching development, and offers a horse-friendly environment with few equals. Equine athletes of all breeds and ages thrive amid the dry southern Arizona climate, enhanced by the long, sunny days; short, mild winters; and the overall temperate weather. In addition to the natural elements, the horses also benefit from the attention to detail that makes the layout and facilities of the ranch both horse and human friendly. Built in 2001, the ranch headquarters features 2,400 spacious square feet that reflect the

At every angle and around every corner, rustic meets the contemporary: vaulted ceilings adorned with skylights; warm wood finishes with cool Cantera stone floors; panoramic views framed by elegant French doors; a kitchen where a stainless steel workplace complements custom cherry cabinets; and a fireplace where rough stone is molded into design excellence. Featuring two bedrooms and two baths, the rammed-earth home incorporates ranch soil and boasts ample space to both entertain and relax. Outdoors,
Complementing the home, a 1,200-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath ranch cottage offers a retreat for family and guests. The cottage features a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, dining area, and a sitting/family room with fireplace, a back porch and a fenced yard with garden. Nearby, an 850-squarefoot guest home remains under construction, but only adds to the unlimited possibilities. With more than 55 acres currently irrigated, unlimited water access and close proximity to a virtually unspoiled ecosystem, the San Pedro River Ranch is yours to develop. From a professional horse training/boarding/breeding facility to organic farming, from an executive retreat to a private bed and breakfast in the middle of one of the “Last Great Places in the Northern Hemisphere”, the San Pedro River Ranch pulses with an opportunity as broad as the neighboring Galiuro and Winchester mountain ranges,

Throughout history, the river has fueled life, beauty and opportunity along every stunning mile, an oasis amidst the rough Arizona desert. he Dunne Valley Ranch, located in the Cimarron Valley of south central Kansas, contains over 21,000 contiguous acres
of the best pasture and farmland in the area. This area has been recognized as prime cattle country since its settlement in the 1870s. Presently, 800 acres are farmed for wheat and alfalfa, but many more could be converted to farmland, if desired. The ranch is operated as a cow-calf operation. This ranch has had only two owners with the Dunne family owning all or part of it since 1941. In the era of the great cattle drives, the Cimarron River Valley lay along the western arm of the Chisholm Trail, also known as the “Great Western Trail” or the “Dodge City Trail.” The ranch is in the Cimarron Strip, and millions of cattle were driven across the area to Dodge City and Abilene. The Dunne Valley Ranch has recently gone through a major face lift with the help of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). In the past several years, seven miles of new interior fencing has been constructed, seven new water wells were drilled and 23 new 22-foot fiberglass tanks were set. It is not often that a ranch of this quality comes on the market. Paradise Valley has, for many years, been the most sought-after location for recreational ranches in Montana because of the abundant wildlife and fishery resources, as well as some of the most dramatic scenery in the northern Rockies. Additionally, the proximity of the ranch to Yellowstone Park, Livingston and Bozeman contribute to the attractiveness and value of the ranch. Once you visit the Diamond B Mountain Ranch, you will quickly learn how Paradise Valley got its name. From anywhere on the ranch, the views seem to go on forever. The view to the east is dominated by Emigrant Peak and

Situated 10 miles south of historic Livingston in the prized Pine Creek drainage in the world-famous Paradise Valley of Montana, DANCING WIND RANCH offers a rare opportunity to own one of the last great legacy ranches of Montana. The best of “The Last Best Place” beckons from the ranch: geologic features, mountain splendor, crystal-clear water, and pastoral meadows. Extending from the Deep Creek drainage on the north to the Pine Creek drainage on the south and with 3.5 miles of shared border with Forest Service and Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness to the east, the property provides unspoiled and dramatic views in every direction while offering privacy and protection without isolation. With the current owner being only the second since the 1880s, a legacy of preservation, sound management practices and appreciation of the land will be passed to the next steward of the ranch. DANCING WIND RANCH is a unique and unprecedented offering. The “casually elegant” Montana-style home was designed by Jonathan Foote and completed by OSM in 1998. Incorporating the generous use of stacked stone, antique timbers, imported woods, custom accoutrements, view-capturing windows and a dramatic great room with custom back bar and a massive stone fireplace, the home lends itself to the intimacy of a small group or the high energy of a large gathering. The ranch-owned 60'x70'x23' hangar at Mission Field will accommodate most mid-size jets. It complements the helicopter hangar at the ranch headquarters built to house a Euro-
