Land use: exploring clean energy options for farmers and landowners
Conrad Energy – Hall 2, Stand 640
As the world continues to grapple with the challenges posed by climate change, the need for clean and renewable energy sources is becoming ever more pressing. For farmers and landowners, harnessing clean energy offers environmental benefits as well as lucrative opportunities.
In this article, Conrad Energy explore various clean energy options available, whether farmers and landowners choose to develop renewable energy assets themselves or lease their land to developers. Whichever route is chosen, working with dependable, experienced suppliers and partners to help deliver the project is key to a successful outcome.
Solar energy
Solar energy is a widely recognised and accessible clean energy option for farmers and landowners. By installing solar panels on their land, they can generate electricity, reducing their reliance on traditional power sources. Solar energy systems can be tailored to suit the unique needs of each farm, from small-scale installations on rooftops or unused land to larger utility-scale projects. Moreover, through net metering, excess electricity can be sold back to the grid, creating an additional revenue stream.
Wind energy
For landowners with ample space and favourable wind conditions, wind energy is an excellent choice. Large wind turbines can be installed on open land or agricultural fields to capture wind power and convert it into electricity. Farmers and landowners can enter into agreements with wind energy developers, leasing their land for turbine installation. These agreements typically provide long-term, stable income through land rental fees or revenue-sharing arrangements. Additionally, wind farms have minimal impact on agricultural activities, allowing farmers to continue using the land for farming purposes.
Wind farms have minimal impact on agricultural activities, allowing farmers to continue using the land for farming purposes.
Biomass energy
Farmers and landowners may wish to explore biomass energy as an option. Biomass, derived from organic materials such as crop residues, animal manure, and dedicated energy crops, can be converted into heat or electricity through processes like combustion or anaerobic digestion. Utilising biomass as an energy source can not only reduce waste but also provide a sustainable energy solution. Farmers can consider investing in biomass facilities on their land or collaborate with developers to establish biomass power plants, benefiting from revenuesharing or feedstock supply agreements.
Hydropower
If a farm or property has a river or stream passing through it, hydropower can be a viable clean energy option. Microhydropower systems can be installed to generate electricity from the flowing water. Farmers and landowners can harness the potential energy of the water by using turbines or waterwheels. Small-scale hydropower systems can provide a consistent and reliable source of renewable energy, particularly in rural areas. Furthermore, excess electricity generated can be sold back to the grid, contributing to the overall energy supply, and potentially generating additional income.
Battery energy storage systems
Battery storage is playing an increasingly important part in enabling the proliferation of green energy across the UK. The ability of batteries to not only store energy but provide grid stability products such as frequency support, contributes to the UK’s ongoing energy security. Hosting a battery energy installation can either be done as a standalone project or as part of a bigger renewable energy project.
Farmers and landowners have a unique opportunity to contribute to the clean energy transition while benefiting financially from renewable energy development. From solar and wind to biomass, batteries and hydropower, a range of clean energy options are available. By choosing the most suitable option for their land, farmers and landowners can promote sustainability, reduce carbon footprints, and secure a brighter future for themselves and the planet.

A stress-free solution to the Combined Heat and Power Quality Assurance (CHPQA) programme
NFU Energy – Hall 2, stand 230
Insights from James Wayman, NFU Energy’s Senior Project Engineer.
The Combined Heat and Power Quality Assurance (CHPQA) is a government initiative used to monitor CHP schemes and incentivise quality and efficiency – basically the more efficient your scheme, the greater the financial reward!
New entrants must go through an application process for both new and existing CHP projects and are required to submit sets of energy data, assess scheme performance, and submit the necessary figures to CHPQA for validation every year to remain a participant.
NFU Energy understand the challenges faced by CHP operators in preparing their CHPQA data and meeting the critical deadline of 31 March 2024. We can guide you through the application process, handle the annual submissions, and renew your certification, while you reap all the benefits CHPQA has to offer.
How can NFU Energy help?
NFU Energy understand the challenges faced by CHP operators in preparing their CHPQA data and meeting the critical deadline each year. We go beyond assistance – we manage the entire process. Registered Participants (RPs) need only provide us with their meter reads, and from there, our expert team meticulously scrutinises the data to ensure accuracy and coherence. Once satisfied, we take charge of uploading the information, along with all necessary supporting documents, to the CHPQA portal.
What is the deadline to make an Annual Return?
The deadline to submit your annual energy data is 31 March 2024, allowing the CHPQA Administrator time to validate the forms and issue a new certificate in good time. Failure to meet this deadline could see your entitlement to Climate Change Levy (CCL) exception being removed until a new exception Certificate is issued.
What if there are queries from CHPQA?
Should CHPQA raise any questions or concerns during the validation process, our dedicated team is well-equipped to handle these queries efficiently. We navigate through any potential roadblocks, providing a seamless experience for RPs until a new CHPQA certificate is successfully issued.
With the 31 March 2024 deadline for CHPQA certification fast approaching, NFU Energy is here to help turn a potentially stressful process into a seamless experience. Just send us your meter reads and our expert team will do the rest, ensuring your renewal is hassle-free.

Every cow should be a part of the climate solution
Mootral Ltd – Hall: 2, Stand 236
When we started Mootral in 2016, our driving force was a bold vision: transform animal farming from a climate challenge to a key part of the solution. The complexity of that endeavour was immense – our solution had to have a demonstrably positive impact on reducing methane, while ensuring our approach was economically viable for farmers.
Apart from the obvious criteria around safety, efficacy and feasibility, we identified many issues over the years: Our science can’t take the long view. Methane reduction is the fastest opportunity to cool the planet and, therefore, must start at scale within this decade. Enteric fermentation is the biggest source of methane. It also offers the best opportunity for scaled reductions by 2030, as most technologies tackling CO2 are just not scalable yet.
Not all cows are created equal. There are many breeds of cattle, living in different climates and eating different diets. It was always clear to us that a one-size-fits-all approach was never going to be possible. Any solution that wants to truly move the needle needs to work in any cow in any setting and, therefore, needs to be adaptable.
Farmers can’t afford to live off ideals. Whatever solution we were going to come up with, it had to make farmers money. We’ve seen this issue get ignored. We’ve even seen outrageous proposals of penalising farmers for their emissions. Yet our work on the farm made it abundantly clear that tackling climate change was about tackling farmer economics as well.
Robbing Peter to pay Paul does not work. We studied countless compounds and technologies over the years. There are only very few approaches that work and even fewer viable solutions. Many solutions currently proposed are promising in theory, but grapple with issues such as scalability, financial viability, risks to human and animal health, environmental impact, and uncontrollable variability in active compoundsincluding all the issues that come with that. Succeeding in one area at the expense of others was simply not an option. Throughout, our North Star has been to create a stable, standardised product that is safe for animals, humans and the planet; can be applied to any cow in any setting, and makes commercial sense for the farmer.
Our existing Enterix solution can already achieve good methane reductions and productivity gains important to farmers. Its limitations, including the lack of applicability in grazing cattle have encouraged us to do better. While we could have just made some incremental improvements to the solution we have, and indeed we did, stopping there would mean abandoning our mission to future-proof global food production.
Recognising limitations proved a catalyst for our approach to R&D. Our thinking has been shaped by a holistic view of all the challenges - scientific, commercial and regulatory. We also learned a great amount from the challenges our competitors are facing along the way.
Meet Enterix Advanced
Enterix Advanced stands as a beacon of our commitment to overcoming years worth of challenges. By synergizing a specific molecule from garlic with Iodoform, a molecule found in some types of mushrooms and seaweed, and with a mode of action akin to bromoform, yet devoid of its adverse effects, we’ve crafted a solution that is safe, scalable, and environmentally sound. This patented synergy also allows for lower dosage, removing any drawbacks of using high quantities of either component.
Critically, we have found a way to overcome a huge obstacle to worldwide adoption - how to tackle methane production in grazing cows. Our new technology allows for a controlled release formulation necessary for bolus administration in grazing cattle. This is a game changer in that it vastly increases the feasibility of methane mitigation in animal agriculture globally.
First principles – always
Our approach has been grounded in first principles of safety, efficacy, scalability and farmer economics. The lessons learned along the way validated our beliefs. For us, Enterix Advanced is more than just a product - it is a solution that has embedded answers to a complex set of challenges our stakeholders - the dairy and beef farmers, brands, grocers and processors, as well as governments have been struggling with.
The time to take action is finally here
As we prepare to introduce Enterix Advanced to the world, we are certain of its potential to give farmers the means to lead on climate change mitigation and strengthen the economic viability of their farms. We see a potential for the industry to take charge and offer meaningful choices to consumers. And we see a clear role for governments in incentivising change that supports their own metrics towards a Net Zero world.
The win-wins of regenerative agriculture
Lloyds Bank Hall 2 – Stand 308
Regenerative agriculture has experienced a sharp rise from a niche concept to a commonplace strategy across the UK agricultural sector. It holds promise as a win-win strategy to address net zero and long-term farm productivity.
Centred around improving and revitalising soil health, regenerative agriculture can be defined as any form of farming, which at the same time benefits the environment.
Regenerative agriculture’s loose definition offers farms the freedom to interpret it as most appropriate to their system, encouraging widespread uptake across a diverse range of farm businesses. The rapid growth of Groundswell, the UK’s annual festival of regenerative farming, illustrates the momentum behind this movement.
The prospect of cutting inputs and costs, against a backdrop of volatility in feed, fuel and fertiliser markets, is appealing to most farms. When also considering the need for businesses to adapt to the restructuring of the farming subsidies and to reverse declining soil carbon stocks, it is clear to see the major role regenerative agriculture could play for years to come. It is shaped by a set of five core principles which cover a range of holistic land management practices.
By embracing the following principles farms can begin to regenerate their soils:
1) Minimise soil disturbance – Assess where tillage and chemicals can be limited
2) Maximise crop biodiversity – Increase diversity in main crop rotations and integrate herbal leys
3) Keep the soil covered – Plan rotations to include cover crops and over-winter growth
4) Maintain living roots year-round – Limit fallow periods and consider arable reversion
5) Integration of livestock – Utilise grazable cover crops and temporary grass leys
There are several win-win outcomes associated with regenerative agriculture, with the evidence base rapidly growing. Applying these five principles undoubtedly provides an array of environmental and social benefits, including reduced emissions, increased biodiversity and enhanced public goods, whilst also boosting farm financial performance.
There are several win-win outcomes associated with regenerative agriculture, with the evidence base rapidly growing.
Recent findings from a research partnership between the Allerton Project, NIAB and Syngenta have associated UK regenerative agriculture with higher farm profitability.
The project offers independent scientific evidence of up to 36% increase in net profit versus a conventional ploughbased arable system, despite a slight drop in yield. This is alongside consistent improvements in carbon footprint, earthworm number and soil carbon.
Regenerative agriculture is not only good for farmers, it also delivers clear win-win contributions to the agricultural sector’s shared goals of progressing towards net zero targets and reversing nature decline.
Measure, benchmark and lower carbon footprint across the food supply chain.
“
Being able to drill down into figures that are coming from a carbon audit with Agrecalc, like using fertiliser inefficiently, has got us into researching different and more effective fertilisers. We’ve reduced nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions by 37%, and improved our biodiversity. Overall, we’re producing relatively carbon efficient beef – per kilo
Improving the performance and sustainability of the livestock industry by transforming the quality of livestock movement data in the supply chain.
What is the Livestock Information Service and what’s coming next?
Livestock Information Service - Hall 2, Stand 962
Reporting the movement of livestock from one holding to another has been a legal requirement for some time, but now there are opportunities to build on the current process to improve effectiveness and accuracy of the data.
The Livestock Information Service (LIS) has been developed by Livestock Information Ltd and forms part of Defra’s transformational change programme for the food and farming sector. It has been set up to improve the accuracy and management of livestock movement data to benefit trade and disease control, along with bringing wider industry benefits.
By using modern digital techniques for livestock movement data, the aim is to provide near to real time figures for statutory service purposes for the benefit of government and industry. For example, if there were a disease outbreak in a localised area, the new approach to movement data would allow for a more rapid and effective response to contain the outbreak, in a similar way to how the Covid Track and Trace app was widely used during the Covid pandemic.
This will be achieved through a planned consolidation and transformation of three existing species-specific traceability platforms; sheep/goats (ARAMS), cattle (CTS) and pigs (EAMLS2) into one cohesive digital livestock traceability service. Having this information will allow for better management of the following areas:
• Disease control
• Animal health and welfare
• Food safety and consumer confidence
• Domestic and international trade partner confidence
• Understanding how we facilitate further improvements by gaining industry and consumer insights
This will enable world leading standards of livestock traceability to deliver a competitive trade advantage, making us more resilient and responsive to animal disease, driving innovation and productivity improvements throughout the livestock sectors.
The team are now working with industry to introduce the use of the Bovine Electronic Identifier Data (EID) tags across the livestock industry.
What has been done so far?
In March 2022, the process of transitioning the previous sheep traceability service to the new Livestock Information Service (LIS) was completed, including the launch of the Livestock Unique Identification Service (LUIS) Sheep and Goat ear tag service. Since its launch, the service has made several updates and improvements to the usability of the online platform through direct consultation with users.
In February 2023, the Livestock Unique Identifier Service (LUIS) delivered the new cattle ear tag allocation service enabling the Cattle (CETAS) solution to be decommissioned. The team are now working with industry to introduce the use of the Bovine Electronic Identifier Data (EID) tags across the livestock industry.
In collaboration with the Welsh and the Scottish sheep traceability services, the first iteration of UK View for sheep, goat, and deer went live in December 2023. As the name suggests, this will provide a UK View of movement data for sheep, goat and deer, giving the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) a single consolidated view of sheep across the UK, which they’ve never had before in this level of detail.
What’s next?
The next phase of the programme is to focus on replacing the Cattle Tracing System (CTS) and transitioning cattle movements for England to the new multi-species service. This is currently in the final stage of discovery but timelines are yet to be conclusive. There are still several hurdles to overcome to standardise the current process and get it in line for moving onto the new platform, so consultations are ongoing with industry stakeholders.

Reducing emissions in a commercial suckler herd
Agrecalc – Stand 216
B W & J Orr farm is situated in South Lanarkshire and operates across two holdings, both of which are around 105 hectares in size. The business runs a 110 head commercial suckler herd of predominantly Limousin cross cattle producing weaned calves. In addition, the business also runs a 600 head flock of breeding ewes producing finished and store lambs.
The business wanted to fulfil the conditions of the Scottish Government’s Beef Efficiency Scheme (BES) and get another set of eyes on the business to see how they operate and what they can do to improve. They used an agricultural consultant from SAC Consulting, whose services were covered by the grant funding.
The report out of Agrecalc identified the issues the farm needed to resolve by comparing the results to similar farms. Armed with that information, the consultant developed a plan to improve on areas such as fertility, nutrition and animal health.
Challenges of reducing emissions in a commercial suckler herd
As the results of the first carbon audit were not that positive, it had the owners starting to question how the business operated and move away from ‘this-is-how-it-has-alwaysbeen-done’ mentality. By gathering the data on performance, the business is now constantly evaluating how they operate; the data allows to properly understand the situation, and use methods such as blood testing, silage and soil analysis to help inform decision making.
The sum of small gains allowed for 48.52% increase in output between the first audit in 2017 and the third audit in 2020
Agrecalc solution for reducing emissions in a commercial suckler herd
The calculator was used as a part of the Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP), which was funded through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS). The two carbon audits competed following the plan allowed the business to monitor their performance and progress. The improvements in the carbon audits were mirrored by the business’ financial performance, and they have found that carbon efficiency is quite closely linked to financial performance.
The sum of small gains allowed for 48.52% increase in output between the first audit in 2017 and the third audit in 2020. Total emissions per kilo of output were reduced by 34%, broken down into a 17.19% decrease in beef emissions, and a 28.94% decrease in sheep emissions. The table below illustrates the figures over three years.
The business will continue its carbon audits with Agrecalc to identify areas where they are not performing, as well as understand whether the changes they implemented are working or not.
Low Emission Vehicles Expo
