The Photoshoot

As with any theatrical production, (or wedding!) there is a lot of scrambling and panic the morning of one of our photoshoots. And then, some how… it all just comes together. Photography by Birdsong Louis Photography

1

From Bed to Set Anyone in the South knows that an early morning start is the best way to avoid the heat and to “git er done.” We take smaller kids directly from bed to location - fewer changings = smilier faces!

Big Kids are a BIG Help Our older kids are PROS when it comes to entertaining (and keeping in line) younger sibs or cousins. A range of ages works well!

The Bubbas We are delighted when we can include the boys. Not so sure they feel the same, but they are very cooperative! And we love the adorable shots they bring to our collection.

2

Props We’ve learned to bring props. Not just chairs and flowers but dolls and toys and snacks, and yes, candy,…lots of yummy candy.

A Scramble.

It is always a scramble to pack, haul, set up, and get everyone dressed and ready before the photographer arrives. But we’re finding our groove!

Final Touches Straighten that tie, turn down this collar, wipe off those crumbs. We’re good to go!

3

Following her marching ordersjust be adorable… all day long!

Some of the best shots of this little one come unexpectedly, undirected… when the photographer just follows her around, snapping away.

A kiss and a hug and off she goes… yet again!

The Pattern This adorable little dress was made with Bonnie Blue pattern #157, “Laurel.”

The Fabrics The dress fabric is a brushed cotton challis with woven black dots (sorry - sold out). Contrasting piping, collar, and covered buttons (down back) were made with a black featherwale corduroy.

2. Holiday

The Photoshoot

It was lace for the holidays – these gorgeous dresses were featured in Classic Sewing Magazine, Holiday 2020. The girls showed them off under the beautiful fir trees lining the entrance to Redcliffe Plantation. Photography by Birdsong Louis Photography

1

Prop City We often run around the shop last minute just grabbing ANYTHING we think might “spruce” it up for us. Pun intended!

The Battle Plan Kids entertain themselves while the adults come up with a plan. We discuss best backdrops, kidcombinations to include, garment features we want to highlight, etc.

Setting the Stage(s) Everyone helps set things up for the shoot. Our inspiration for this location here was this beautiful row of fir trees along the entrance to Redcliffe Plantation in Beech Island, not far from the shop.

2

Composition & Balance Arranging a successful set around our models requires patience, a lot of tweaking…and, of course, contending with the SC sun.

Wait!...

Emma – I can’t see your bow. Smile, Charlee. Can you skooch a tad to the left, Andie. Ok, y’all look at Holly and SMILE! Wait! That gift box fell over.

Hold Your Breath… …for the perfect shot!

The Photoshoot

This outing was relatively easy – two girls, a toddler, and a baby. Much more low-key (and fun) than some of our other shoots. The weather was enjoyable, the girls were happy, the dresses were absolutely lovely. A great day!

Sally Sewist The solid rock behind this operation, owner Sally Whinghter can pull off a photoshoot like nobody’s business. It certainly helps that she loves sewing for our wonderful models… her beautiful grandchildren.

Sweet ‘n Soft for the Win We selected sweet ‘n soft peach and blue/green hues for our spring shoot this year. They are smashing together, are they not? So elegant!

The Perfect Touch With 100s of floral embellishments at the shop, Sally can always find the perfect one to finish a garment in style. #elevate

4. Summer

The Photoshoot

Edisto Island, SC was the location for our summer photoshoot, and summer-weight linen was the fabric! With hats, shades, and cute coverups and shorts, the kids remained, as always, oh, so cool!
