Shaun the Sheep is latest MyFarm recruit Much loved character aims to expand audience to include more families and younger children. he National Trust has partnered with Aardman Animations to encourage children and families to learn about farming and food through the National Trust's mass on-line www.my-farm.org.uk project.

MyFarm aims to educate and engage the public in all aspects of farming. Every month the online community help make real decisions which are then carried out on the farm, with real consequences.

The much loved Aardman character, Shaun the Sheep, has been brought on board to help expand the audience to include more families and young children.

The National Trust has also created a dedicated Shaun the Sheep page on the MyFarm website which will be regularly updated with new content, including activities and discussions aimed at a family audience. The website will also include Shaun the Sheep online games and downloadable posters.

UK record-breaking land sale for Pygott & Crone Global food crisis could mean that agricultural land prices continue to rise. gricultural land and property specialists Pygott & Crone has smashed the UK record for a price achieved for prime arable land - fetching £18,055 per acre near Boston, Lincolnshire.

Richard Start, land agent in Pygott & Crone agricultural department, put 167.711 acres of prime agricultural land and a farm building in Old Leake under the hammer at its auction on Wednesday (26.10) The land, sold on behalf of eight beneficiaries, went to six different local buyers for a total of £2,088,000.

There were 10 lots all together. 95 acres at Leake Hurn’s End were bought by a local farmer for £1.52 million. This

was in three lots – two 19-acre lots, and a lot of 58 acres - which achieved the record breaking price of £18,055 per acre. The remaining 72 acres and a farm building sold for £568,000.

Richard said: “We believe this is the UK record for a price achieved per acre. Pygott & Crone already holds the record for tenanted land at over £11,000 per acre. We have now broken the record for vacant possession – which we believe stands at around £14,000 per acre for land also in the Boston area.”

Partner Will Barker, who heads the agricultural department, added: “This is a major achievement for Pygott & Crone – especially in the current

economic downturn. This sale was really positive news for the agricultural market, despite the economic doom and gloom.”

However, Pygott & Crone expects agricultural land prices in Britain to continue rising following the surge in global food prices.

“What this sale also shows is that in Lincolnshire we have some of the best land available in the country – which is brilliant news for the county. Lincolnshire is, without doubt, the food basket of the nation,” said Will.

“Pygott & Crone is delighted with this record – and look forward to continued agricultural auctions in the future.”

Anglesey farmer is new FUW livestock commitee chairman Anglesey farmer Dafydd Roberts has been elected as the new chairman of the Farmers' Union of Wales's influential livestock, wool and marts committee.

Anglesey branch, farms around 300 acres at Tryfil Uchaf, Llandrygan, Llanerchymedd.

Together with his wife Cadi, a retired teacher, he runs a flock of 500 Suffolk cross and halfbred sheep and 100 Friesian beef cattle.

Mr Roberts, who was born on the farm in 1945 and has lived there ever since, studied agriculture at the former Coleg Pencraig at Llangefni. He has four children and nine grandchildren.

He said: "It is a great honour

for me to be elected as chairman of this important committee and I look forward to continuing the good work the previous chairman, Aeron Prysor Jones, has done for the union and its members."

Latest farm income figures underline market volatility challenge Livestock & horticulture sectors suffering. ignificant rises in input costs have led to mixed fortunes for English farm incomes during 2010/11 according to the NFU, after publication of Defra’s Farm Business Income (FBI) report.

The report revealed that although the cereal sector showed a significant increase in 2011, livestock and horticulture sectors suffered falls year-onyear, with the cost of fertiliser and animal feed rising by nearly 30 per cent each.

Incomes in cereals rose in real terms by 97 per cent, with dairy up by seven per cent.

Livestock farms saw their income fall by 29 per cent in lowland and 19 per cent in upland areas, with horticulture

down 27 per cent.

NFU chief economist Phil Bicknell said: “While it is good news that the cereal sector has seen a rise in income, this was expected given improved cereal prices since harvest 2010. It represents a turnaround from a loss-making 2009/10 when prices were below production costs for the average cereal farm.

“Despite firmer cattle and sheep prices, livestock farmers saw a fall in income as the impact of higher feed costs made turning a profit difficult.

income, are critical to ensuring the average livestock farm remains in the black.

“Although the dairy industry experienced a seven per cent rise in income, it wasn’t only the improved price of milk that made the difference. Defra points to the increased cropping output on some dairy units as the reason farmers were partly able to offset higher feed and fertiliser costs. This underlines the on-going need to ensure dairy farmers get a fair return at the farm gate for their milk.

“Finally, horticulture incomes have also declined. An alarming 24 per cent of growers have seen their business fail to turn a profit, more than any other sector in 2010/11. While prices in some sectors have increased slightly this year, few growers will have received enough to cover the escalating cost of

production or allow for reinvestment. They are also experiencing mounting price pressure from their customers, which is eroding margins and confidence.

“Lower profitability means that some farmers will be more reliant on their direct payments this year. CAP continues to play a crucial part in supporting agriculture and its Single Payment Scheme is an effective tool that helps farm businesses cope with market volatility. Farm gate prices might be stronger, but this isn't reflected in the bottom line for some sectors.

“Our big challenge in the long term is to produce more and impact less. That requires efficiency gains and productivity increases, and in turn that needs investment. Farmers will only invest if they're profitable.”

Adding value to chopped straw Improve rumen function by improving rations.

It is predicted that straw supplies will be tight in some areas this harvest, especially with little carryover stocks from last year, so treating straw with Maxammon will ensure that what you do use for feeding goes further.

Satellite technology to connect rural communities to fast broadband service Latest Ka band technology should prove more viable. he CLA and Hughes Europe are to host a demonstration in Hampshire of how satellite technology can provide rural communities who struggle to connect to the internet with an effective, affordable broadband service.

Online Week - a week-long roadshow touring rural England to highlight the difficulties residents and businesses face in getting online.

CLA President William Worsley said: “The CLA is lobbying to ensure that every rural business and household can access a broadband connection of at least five megabits per second (Mbps).

“Can’t Get Online Week aims to highlight how important reliable internet access is for the economic and social life of rural communities. Rural residents and businesses face real difficulties getting a decent broadband connection, with many still on dial-up.”

Christopher Britton, managing director of Hughes Europe, said: “Dial-up no longer has to be the case. Thanks to the latest Kaband satellite technology, we are able to provide robust and viable broadband which meets the needs of those areas of the UK

not served by terrestrial DSL or cable solutions.

Fertiliser business forms new joint venture to meet growing demand ancashire based feed trading and fertiliser business, Glasson Grain has announced it will be expanding its fertiliser operations by forming a new joint venture business with NW Trading Limited, based in Birkenhead to form brand new fertiliser business FertLink.

Glasson Grain, the importer, shipper and trader of animal feed materials and fertiliser manufacturer, which became part

of the Wynnstay Group in 2006 will become a 50% owner of a new fertiliser business along with NW Trading.

The new joint venture business, FertLink will be managed by Robert Ingham of Glasson Grain and is to be based at NW Trading’s extensive premises and port facility at Birkenhead. The joint venture will bring together the expertise of both Glasson and NW Trading to

manufacture and pack a full range of agricultural fertilisers and urea products.

Back load LimeX now to secure your needs!

Demand remains strong after another summer sell out. he opportunity to save on liming and nutrient costs by taking advantage of back loading LimeX70 from Bury, Newark and Wissington Sugar Factories is available throughout the sugar beet processing season. There is also limited availability on LimeX45 for back loading from Cantley whilst stocks last.

Following another summer sell out, early autumn indications show that demand remains strong as customers collect for immediate application, or take into store for spring and summer use.

The correct pH range for any crop is essential to optimise yield and quality. The British Survey of Fertiliser Practice shows that lime applications still remain significantly lower than they were a decade ago in both grassland and arable farming systems. However, unless pH testing is conducted on a regular basis it is difficult to objectively determine if you are risking yield and quality as a direct result of low pH.

By targeting lime application in advance of grassland reseeding, or before the most pH sensitive crop in an arable rotation, the cost of any liming can be spread across the rotation between applications, making liming a vital but low cost input.

The correct pH is a fundamental requirement for crop yield, and the consequential yield loss from sub-optimal pH can be catastrophic.

LimeX is available to all farmers, and our soil sampling services include detailed field pH mapping with liming recommendations via FACTS qualified advisors for conventional and organic farming systems. We can offer flexible delivery and application packages directly to our customers. Alternatively LimeX is available via our network of regional distributors.

Bronze statue fitting tribute to past FUW president More than 100 attended the dinner in honour of Mr Vaughan and his wife Audrey. miniature copy of the bronze statue of a shepherd and sheepdog unveiled in 2004 as part of the Royal Welsh Show centenary celebrations was presented to Farmers' Union of Wales immediate past president Gareth Vaughan during the union's national annual dinner at Welshpool.

Fittingly, the figure was handed over by Bala beef farmer Emyr Jones who succeeded Mr Vaughan last June following the Newtown sheep farmer's eightyear term in office.

great privilege to serve as deputy to Mr Vaughan who had represented the union with great dignity and forcefulness.

"Whenever he was interviewed by the media on his farm he always turned up in his working clothes - not in some fancy Barbour jacket," said Mr Powell.

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies also paid a glowing tribute to the dedicated service Mr Vaughan had given to Welsh farming over several years.

new promotional campaign designed to encourage more consumers to eat fresh British leeks has been launched to highlight the new 2011/12 season and will run from November 2011

Backed by a collaboration of ten UK leek growers and four seed companies, the campaign will be based around the theme of “Food for Champions”, in order to tie in with the 2012 London Olympic Games. The nutritional benefits of eating leeks will be highlighted and a series of leekbased recipes have been developed as part of the

campaign by leading sports nutritionist Dr Sarah Schenker.

The campaign has already seen the development of a new press pack including a series of fact sheets, recipes and grower profiles. In addition, the British leeks’ website is being completely revamped. The new look site will include details of the season, tips on preparing and cooking leeks, new recipes, local

Utilise your hard-to-work land by planting trees The Woodland Trust is offering landowners the opportunity to make better use of land that's awkward to farm by planting trees. cattered planting support is now available for landowners through the Trust's MOREwoods scheme. Landowners must be willing to plant between 500-1000 trees, which means having one to three acres available for planting. This can be through a number of small plots; hard to work field corners, borders or unworkable patches of land.

The MOREwoods scheme aims to help landowners create woodland by offering advice, support and in some cases funding towards tree planting.

The Trust can adapt its package of support to suit the needs and motivations of landowners. Woodland can be created for firewood, for game cover, to create wildlife habitats, or as shelterbelts for crops and livestock, to help enhance productivity and make the best use of all available space.

part of the MOREwoods scattered planting scheme and said: “I’d encourage farmers to think differently about land use. If poor areas of land are not profitable to grow crops, take them out and use the land to plant trees.

"I’ve taken poor land out of arable production and put it into environmental schemes, and in doing so have created shelter belts for livestock, increased the long term value of my land and generated firewood to heat my home by utilising existing woodland.

“The trees we've planted conform to the Game Conservancy’s guidance on shelter belts, which means we’re benefitting wildlife too. We now run a small non-commercial shoot, which demonstrates the wide range of benefits that you can get from shelter belts."

Woodlands can be planted for a number of useful reasons; they offer free wood fuel for wood burning stoves, help prevent flooding and soil erosion, remove carbon,

and can make an important contribution to addressing the challenges of climate change.

The MOREwoods scheme aims to help landowners create woodland by offering advice, support and in some cases funding towards tree planting. All applicants must be willing to contribute towards the costs of their scheme.

The Trust is able to provide support from initial application until completion and beyond. All approved applications will be visited by a trained adviser who will check the land is suitable for planting and will advise on species and protection, as well as helping with design.

CLA President William Worsley said: “The CLA lobbied for a review of forestry regulation and I commend the Forestry Regulation Task Force for this report and fully support

its recommendations.

“The Task Force has clearly listened to the sector and has produced a balanced suite of recommendations for regulatory change and the delivery of these. These changes will reduce the burden that red tape has on woodland owners and managers while still ensuring the protection of our

most valuable woodland habitats.”

Mr Worsley added: “I strongly urge the Minster to accept all the recommendations in the report and implement them as soon as possible to ensure the forestry and woodland sector will survive.”

Urban tree disease found in England “It is very worrying to find this destructive tree pathogen so far from previous cases in Scotland.” deadly plant disease previously unknown in England has been found in Devon killing Lawson Cypress trees that are commonly found in parks and gardens.

Forestry Commission scientists have confirmed that Phytophthora lateralis, a funguslike pathogen that kills trees’ roots, has infected several trees in a shelter hedge on an industrial estate.

The disease is very infectious to Lawson Cypress and some other trees, but harmless to people, animals and most other plants. The trees will be felled and disposed of safely and the site is subject to biosecurity measures to prevent spreading the disease particularly in contaminated soil, felling equipment and other tools.

Until recently, P. lateralis was mostly known in the western states of the USA and Canada, but outbreaks have also been recorded recently in Scotland, Northern Ireland, France and

The Netherlands. The pathogen has also been reported recently from Taiwan on yellow cedar.

John Morgan, Head of Plant Health for the Forestry Commission said: “It is very worrying to find this destructive tree pathogen so far from previous cases in Scotland and we are working hard with colleagues in Fera to contain the disease quickly and try and trace where it came from.

Our surveillance teams are actively looking for signs of the disease during helicopter surveys.”

“Its main victim is Lawson cypress, not a very significant forestry tree, but very popular in parks, gardens, churchyards and crematoria. We are asking people working around trees, particularly arboriculturists and those who manage parks and gardens to be particularly vigilant for signs of the disease.

If they are called to examine or fell a dead or dying Lawson cypress and are suspicious of the causes, we ask they follow

biosecurity guidance published on our website.”

“Experience in Scotland and Northern Ireland leads us to anticipate more findings in England. If the disease becomes established it could also be very serious for the ornamental plant industry because Lawson cypress - and its various colourful varieties - is one of the

most important conifers in the ornamental plant trade.”

‘Story of JCB’ exhibition set to generate new export business 66 years of success for the brand to go on show. he doors have been thrown open to a multi-million pound customer attraction at JCB designed to generate new business from all over the world.

A unique and permanent exhibition called ‘The Story of JCB’ has been developed at JCB’s World HQ at Rocester charting the company’s links to industry back to the 1820s.

Today JCB Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford spoke of his pride at the new £5 million customer experience centre’s development and its pivotal role in winning new business, particularly in the emerging markets.

JCB expect visitor numbers to rise to 20,000 from next year as a result of the exhibition’s development.

He said: “This is an extremely exciting development. It is the first time that the history of our company and my family’s roots in manufacturing has been told in the form of a permanent exhibition.

“We are an innovative company and our success over the past 66 years has been driven by innovation and that is at the very core of ‘The Story of JCB.’ It is a showcase of our unique story and something we can all be very proud of.

“The ‘Story of JCB’ exhibition is also a very powerful selling tool for our customers, especially in the emerging markets where a greater appreciation of our heritage and pedigree will help them understand our business and why we are the right choice for their future machine requirements.”

Among those given a tour of the new exhibition were members of the Boot family, who have a combined service to JCB of more than 400 years. The tradition of working for JCB was started by the late Bill Boot in 1949 and it now extends to the 4th generation of his family. Eight of his sons went on to work for the company, including retired employees Bob and Ron Boot, who attended the preview yesterday. They were joined by Bill's grandson Gary, who works at the World HQ, Rocester and Bill's great-grandson Leigh, who works at the World Parts Centre, Uttoxeter.

of floorspace and includes 14 zones which take the visitor on a journey through time, starting in the 1820s, when the Bamford family were blacksmiths in Uttoxeter through to the present day and JCB’s ECO range of fuelsaving machines.

It includes a section highlighting the engineering prowess of Bamfords Ltd, the firm of agricultural engineers based in Uttoxeter, whose Director Henry Bamford famously sacked his nephew Joseph Cyril Bamford by sending him a note that “his services would no longer be required.”

Mr Bamford’s subsequent success and the huge global growth of the company under the stewardship of his son Sir Anthony, Chairman for almost 36 years, are highlighted in the zones.

The area occupied by the ‘Story of JCB’ exhibition housed the JCB Design Centre and Production Drawing Office from 1970 until the early 1980s, when product-specific business units were introduced and designers and draughtsmen relocated.

Visitors today are taken past Mr Bamford’s old office, which he used from 1970 until his retirement in 1975. Always at the centre of engineering design and development, it gave him a complete window on the world of JCB. From this side of his office he could access his design management and draughtsmen and from the window at the rear he could view the progress of product development in the research workshop situated below. The office still contains Mr Bamford’s original desk, chairs and conference table. Visitors will also see a bronze bust of Mr JCB on his desk, which was a gift from the JCB workforce in 1964, the year in which he presented in excess of £250,000 in productivity bonuses to his staff.

The exhibition is also populated by 10 of the landmark JCB machines through the ages which had to be craned through the roof as the attraction took shape. They include one of Mr Bamford’s first products, a hydraulic tipping trailer, and a 1962 JCB 3 backhoe loader which has been restored.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a giant skeletal model

of a JCB JS200 tracked excavator built to scale out of 8mm steel rod and created by renowned artist Benedict Radcliffe, some of whose work is currently on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The finished artwork took five months to complete, used around one kilometre of steel rod and weighs around two tonnes – a tenth of the weight of the actual machine it represents.

The exhibition also covers sections on how the JCB name was built into a global brand; JCB’s design and innovation ethos; the expansion into a global manufacturer; its growth as an agricultural machinery manufacturer; JCB’s worldwide service and parts back-up; JCB military products and the development of the JCB engine and the record-breaking Dieselmax car.

JCB currently welcomes around 15,000 visitors from all over the world and this figure is expected to rise to 20,000 from next year as a result of the exhibition’s development.

Arrangements are now being made to open the exhibition to JCB employees and their families over the next few months.

There will be some limited opportunities for the general public to visit the attraction, details of which will be publicised in advance via www.jcb.com.

The pig farm, built on a Greenfield site ,located in the Xiangyang region of Hubei, will house a 900 sow high health JSR nucleus herd, and marks a major step forward for JSR who have increasingly targeted China for its exceptional growth potential.

Present for JSR were Chairman Tim Rymer - a board member of The Hubei Liangyou JSR Breeding Limited - International Sales Director, Paul Anderson and Chinese Sales Specialist, Yolanda Hou. Mr Rymer, whose wife Zoë accompanied him to the ceremony, gave an opening address expressing his confidence that the two teams, the investment in new technology and the growing Chinese market would ensure great success.

“Establishing a nucleus herd here, with the support of a state owned company, is a tremendous achievement for JSR,” confirms Paul Anderson. “China is a rapidly expanding market, already home to half the world’s pigs and the Hubei Province itself is the country’s third largest pig producing area.”

Built on a 66 hectare greenfield site the unit has provided an ideal opportunity for incorporating the latest technology and biosecurity and JSR consultant, Simon Grey, worked closely with the Chinese team in its design and construction.

Final selection of breeding stock is taking place. A team of four, headed by genetics expert Professor Jiang Siwen, will visit

JSR in November to view the animals, examine pedigrees and the EBV’s (estimated breeding values).

Nine members of the Hubei team have already visited JSR in the UK, spending three months in nucleus herd training and learning how to get the best out of JSR genetics. With the pigs planned to be shipped on the 30th November, the Chinese team will then be closely supported by regular onsite visits from JSR International Pig Specialists to monitor and advise on progress.

On the business front, Renewable Energy seems to have headlined throughout 2011 and this seems inevitable when we read that according to a 2011 projection by the International Energy Agency, solar power generators may produce most of the world’s electricity within 50 years, dramatically reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases that harm the environment.

Wet harvest sees Pit Rot risk rise for seed potato growers eed potato growers should be braced for a season of potentially high storage rots, as a result of the difficult wet harvesting conditions across Scotland and northern England and the difficult growing season that put extreme stress on crops, warns Eric Anderson of Scottish Agronomy.

He reports the company’s research trials have repeatedly shown that the primary causes of Pit Rot in seed crops are almost certainly linked to the maturity of the tuber at harvest, soil conditions during lifting and environmental stress during the growing season. Whilst there has been some speculation around links to desiccation techniques, Mr Anderson believes the main contributing factor may be the speed of haulm kill per se, rather than any particular desiccant action.

2010 identified storage rots occurred with all desiccation techniques. “It was especially prevalent where the crop was particularly immature at point of desiccation, which increased levels of skin damage at harvest.

This created entry points for bacteria, including gangrene, blackleg and several weaker pathogens capable of developing Pit Rot. Cooling conditions and wet soils enabled the pathogens to proliferate and predisposed the tubers to infection,” reported Mr Anderson. The fact that ware crops are virtually unaffected by the problems seen in seed indicates tuber maturity and physiology plays a significant role.

“Seed tubers that are immature at harvest are the most prone to damage and scuffing during the lifting process, which could allow disease pathogens to get into tubers,” he said. The

highest incidences of Pit Rot experienced in the Scottish Agronomy trials had been where crops have been planted late and consequently seed not harvested until mid-September, when soil conditions were cooler and wetter, and so conducive to disease spread.

“There is certainly some varietal susceptibility too, but fundamentally the risk of storage rots infection appears to be down to the length of the growing season and the soil conditions during lifting,” he advised. Mr Anderson advocates growers should aim to avoid late planting of seed crops where practicable.

Care at harvesting to minimise skin damage and attention to storage environmental conditions could also limit the impact and spread of any Pit Rot infection in store, he added.

Further trials are planned for the 2012 season, to assess the risk factors that give rise to tuber storage rot infection and to develop effective agronomy techniques for growers to minimise problems.

Cut out flail to reduce risk The experience of seed potato growers in Holland fully concurs with Mr Anderson’s findings, reports Syngenta Potato

Technical Manager for Northern Europe, Mark Bullen. “The key factors identified as causing increased bacterial infections include tuber damage at planting, crop stress through the season, field selection and damage to tubers during harvesting and grading.”

Mr Bullen reports that a twospray Reglone desiccation programme is now widely used in Dutch seed production, in preference to flail desiccation that had been associated with bacteria spread, especially in wet conditions. “Many growers and agronomists believe that flail desiccation can spread the bacteria responsible for Pit Rot, which can develop in the green mat of chopped vegetation left on the soil surface. Reglone removal of the leaf on the standing haulm, and then burning off the stems could reduce the risk of infection sources developing,” he added.

The Uniweb 1700 model is another new Uniweb model being produced for 2012. A Vari-Flow web has now been added to the Uniweb options list, and includes a variable speed hydraulic drive, controlled from the tractor cab’. Vari-Flow speed adjustment allows the operator to control the degree of ‘scrub’ exerted on the soil and clods for adjustment to its soil crumbling effectiveness. Enhanced downhill performance is another Vari-Flow benefit; though the Uniweb is well known for its smooth operating and effective intake design.

Farmer calls on local firm to extend its recent PV installation Lark are top of the list.

Spalding farmer is generating renewable energy following Lark Energy’s installation of a 63 kWp photovoltaic (PV) solar power system.

The barn at Eddie Whitfield’s Bank House Farm now not only generates much of the energy needed for its own operations but also generates income from the government’s Feed in Tariff scheme.

The PV installation was designed and installed by Bourne-based Lark Energy (www.larkenergy.co.uk), part of the Larkfleet Group (www.larkfleetgroup.co.uk). The company initially installed 216 individual panels on a roof that the farmer partially reclad to ensure it will last as long as the panels – a guaranteed 25 years.

Eddie was so pleased with the installation that he then asked Lark Energy to install a further 57 panels taking the total installation size to 63kWp.

The PV panels were made by Hyundai, one of the leading PV manufacturers, and supplied by Larkfleet Group company Eco Building Products of Market Deeping near Peterborough.

The photovoltaic panels will produce electricity from daylight, generating useable power even on cloudy days. Over a full year the system will produce 52 MWh and could save the farmer over £2,500 each year from electricity bills as well as generating additional revenue from the

Feed in Tariff.

All that glitters might be gold You don’t have to use the barn roof - think about ground mounted arrays too.

e are all now well used to seeing adverts for all manner of renewable technologies. At the same time the papers are filled with doom and gloom about the excessive profits of the large energy producers. There has also been a lot of coverage surrounding the reduction of the Feed in Tariff incentive for solar farms. It can be a confusing topic knowing which route to pick and which company to appoint. There is one simple way however to pick through the chaff and find an attractive solution from a reliable provider using proven robust materials.

Most people are not aware that solar PV (solar photovoltaics for generating electricity) is still incredibly attractive and profitable for farmers. It can add an excellent source of revenue without any additional workload.

utilise existing roofs of grain stores or barns and can instead be erected on the ground.

A typical small-scale solar farm system would need less than half an acre of space and would generate an annual income in excess of £17,000 for 25 years! That is a 25 year value exceeding £425,000. Such a system would cost about £120,000 from a premium German manufacturer. These ground mounted PV arrays require very little maintenance and carry very long warranties form their manufacturers.

There are two catches however: you will need to fund your own PV system. Most banks however will lend for solar PV projects at an average rate of around 5% pa. When you compare this to the average return on investment from the solar PV system of 14-15% you can see why solar farming is still

very attractive. The second catch is the time left to take advantage of the current scheme. The current Feed In Tariff rate is only available until April 2012. You need to have our system fully installed by that date to guarantee the higher rate of Feed in Tariff for the next 25 years.

It is worth noting that some companies offer ‘free’ solar PV systems if you sign up to a 25 year lease, but the big catch is that you only get the electricity which is worth anything from £10 per month. Not a very attractive proposition when you can buy your own mini solar farm and make your own profit.

It is still possible to start a new project now and qualify for the higher rate tariff. Planning permissions are usually very straightforward and usually take between 2-10 weeks depending on your location. Approvals from

your local network operator (the national grid) can take 8-10 weeks. Smaller solar PV system can actually be installed after only a few weeks without any prior approvals.

What is Anaerobic Digestion, how does it work naerobic digestion is a natural process which converts organic matter such as household food and garden waste, farm slurry, waste from food processing plants and supermarkets, into energy. The main products resulting from anaerobic digestion are biogas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide), which is very similar to natural gas, and digestate, a low level fertilizer. The biogas can be used to generate electricity, gas or heat, or compressed for use as a biofuel.

The fertilizer is rich in nitrates and phosphates. The water industry has been using anaerobic digestion to convert effluent into energy and fertilizer for many years.

How does it work?

and naturally occurring microorganisms digest it, releasing methane that can be used to provide heat and power. This means AD can help reduce fossil fuel use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The material left over at the end of the process is rich in nutrients so it can be used as fertiliser.

AD is not a new technology - it has actually been used in the UK since the 1800s - and there are a growing number of AD plants in the UK processing our waste and producing energy.

Almost any biomass can be processed in AD and converted into renewable energy: food waste, energy crops, slurry, crop residues, etc.

AD plants can

accept waste from our homes, supermarkets, industry and farms, so less waste goes to landfill.

However, woody biomass cannot yet be used in AD because the micro-organisms can't breakdown the lignin, the compound that gives wood its strength.

Products produced The mixture of gases produced by AD is called biogas.

The main gas is methane (CH4) at around 60%, a colourless, odourless gas, and carbon dioxide (CO2) at around 40%.

There will also be

small amounts of contaminant gases, mostly hydrogen sulphide and ammonia. The precise make up of the gases depends on the type of feedstocks and the type of AD. Biogas can be used to produce electricity in a generator or combusted to produce heat. It can also be 'upgraded' by cleaning the biogas to remove the CO2 and contaminant gases, leaving pure methane which is often called bio-methane. Biomethane is effectively renewable natural gas, so it can be put into the National Grid to provide heat and power or compressed for use as a renewable road fuel.

Anaerobic Digestion ( AD) is the process where plant and animal material ( biomass) is converted into useful products by micro-organisms in the absence of air. Biomass is put inside sealed tanks

& what are the benefits to having it installed?

Digestate is the undigested remnants of the feedstocks that the bacteria cannot use and the remains of dead bacteria. It contains valuable plant nutrients like nitrogen, phosphate and potassium and organic humus, so it can be spread on the land as a substitute for synthetic fertiliser.

Benefits of AD Anaerobic digestion, or AD for short, has many advantages.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: converting our organic waste into energy rather than putting it into landfill reduces both the amount of land we set

aside to contain our waste and the amount of methane from decomposing waste that is put into the atmosphere. Methane's contribution to global warming is more than 20 times that of carbon dioxide.

Reducing our use of fossil fuels: the energy and fertilizer generated through AD reduces the amount of these that we would otherwise need to generate from fossil fuels. Making fertilizer from fossil fuels, for example, is a very energy-intensive process and the world is running out of

phosphates so it is important to make the most of what we have.

Energy security: the amount of gas that can be produced from AD is significant and will reduce our reliance on gas imported from countries such as Russia. We already import over 50% of our gas from overseas and this is expected to increase to over 80% in the next few years. This is one of the reasons why gas prices have been increasing in the last few years. Experts estimate that we can get as much as 20% of our domestic gas requirements by converting our waste using AD into biogas and putting this into the National Grid.

Slurry Management: AD can be used to treat

slurry which is often otherwise stored in open containers before being spread to land. The digestate produced is more stable and has better nutrient availability for plants than untreated slurry, and the process mitigates the methane and odour emissions which otherwise come from open slurry storage.

Anaerobic digestion is a win win solution for all of us. It creates valuable energy and fertilizer from our waste, reducing our reliance on energy from overseas and keeping gas prices down. At the same time it minimises our impact on the environment by reducing our climate change emissions and consumption of energy from fossil fuels.

Tariffs up for farm-scale AD but clouds loom again over solar, says NFU rogress could now be made on some on-farm AD projects following an announcement by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on the promised uplift to small-scale biogas tariffs, which resulted from the 2011 ‘fast-track’ Feed-In Tariffs review, the NFU said today.

These should have been implemented on August 1, however, the increase was made conditional on EU state aid

approval and progress was held up for two months by the European Commission, which has now rubber-stamped the new tariffs.

The changes to the generation tariffs take effect automatically, and will apply to AD installations with an eligibility date from 30 September 2011 (the date of the Commission’s decision), as follows: Anaerobic digestion plant up

to 250 kilowatts – 14p/kWh Anaerobic digestion plant 250-500 kilowatts – 13p/kWh These represent a 16 per cent increase and a seven per cent increase, respectively, over the previous 2011-2012 tariff of 12.1p/kWh. NFU chief adviser on renewable energy Dr Jonathan Scurlock said: “We hope that some previously marginal onfarm AD projects will now progress, although these tariffs alone are unlikely to result in the rapid growth in farm-based AD that we need to deliver multiple

environmental benefits.

“We have also heard about the possibility of another big cut to the future levels of solar PV tariffs, to take place sooner than the anticipated reduction FITs planned for April 2012. With the uptake of solar electricity this year vastly exceeding previous government predictions, pressure to manage the FITs budget could result in drastic reductions to tariff rates earlier than expected, this time hitting the small-tomedium scale (under 50 kilowatts).”

New plant commissioned on outskirts of Hereford With a number of similar projects in the pipeline, F.L.I. Energy expects 2012 to be a year of continued growth.

.L.I. Energy, in cooperation with it’s technology partner HoSt BV has successfully commissioned a farm based AD plant on the outskirts of the city of Hereford, England.

With this project, F.L.I. Energy and HoSt have successfully consolidated their market position in the UK and Ireland. With a number of similar projects in the pipeline, F.L.I. Energy expects 2012 to be a year of continued growth. The

plant, situated close to Hereford city, has two primary digesters and a secondary digester configuration with a covered after storage lagoon. The plant feedstocks include a beverage industry by-product, sourced from a local company combined with other agricultural feedstocks including slurry, poultry manure and silage. The Plant has 1.5MWe of installed CHP capacity.

Coinciding with the

commissioning of the Hereford plant, FLI Energy recently commenced construction on another farm based AD Plant nearby in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. The Brecon Beacon plant will process both agricultural feedstocks including silage and abattoir waste and generate 500kWe per annum.

Completion of this Plant is expected by mid 2012.

The HoSt AD technology offered by FLI Energy is ideally suited to farm based projects with either single or multiple feedstock input streams. FLIHost plants process single streams such as grass silage and slurry but are designed to have the flexibility to deal with changes in the feedstock mix and process multiple mixed feedstocks if required. Open days at Anaerobic Industry and academia discuss the future of AD Digester £900,000 plant to encourage production of sustainable energy.

Recent ADBA event highlights importance of the combined effort to implement increased development and take up of AD plants in the UK. he Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Association’s inaugural Research & Development Forum has brought representatives of industry and research institutions together to discuss the future of anaerobic digestion, and how they can work together to maximise the industry’s potential.

The ADBA event was hosted by the Environmental Technology iNet and the University of the West of England, and supported by the Environmental and Sustainability and Biosciences KTNs. It took place across two days from 1-2 November, with high profile speakers from Government, industry and universities.

ADBA Chief Executive Charlotte Morton said: “Meeting the UK’s waste and energy targets requires a heroic

The plant was specifically built at the Nantwich, Cheshire college to inform everyone about the opportunities that exist with on-farm AD. In particular, it will help local community groups, farmers and those in allied businesses such as engineering to decide if AD technology is a viable option now or in the future.

The contribution that Reaseheath’s unique plant can make to encourage production of sustainable energy was highlighted on Farming Sunday, Horse and Country TV’s flagship farming programme, last week. Farm Manager Mark Yearsley and Renewable Energy Officer Dan Galloway were filmed at the plant, discussing its day to day operation and management and early results.

The £900,000 plant, which was part financed by the Rural Development Programme for England (Defra) and through the North West Regional Development Agency, has been operating successfully for six months. It breaks down slurry from the Reaseheath Holstein herd to produce energy for use on campus and an enhanced fertiliser for use on the college’s farmland.

Delivery Hub is to publish data from the operation and any practical lessons that have been learnt.

The plant opened to the public for the first time last week. It will continue to open on a Tuesday morning once monthly with free tours suitable for groups of up to 15 people.

Experts will be on hand to ensure visitors fully understand the processes and results from a monitoring programme will be made available. The college also plans to offer relevant training and offer independent research and advice.

Explained Dan Galloway: “We are keen to encourage anyone interested in the production of sustainable energy through smaller scale AD to come and have a look.

With energy prices becoming constantly more volatile, we’d like as many people as possible to look at its potential for their own businesses and to benefit from our experiences.”

• The Group’s EBITDA for the first half of the year was £20.1 million which, on a like for like basis, was up £1.3 million (+6.9%)* • Additional £16.9 million paid for Members’ milk compared to prior half year • Member Processing Interest Payment being accrued at a rate above the 9.25% return paid in relation to the 2010/11 financial year • Members’ funds increased by £6.4 million to £75.3 million (+ 9.4%) • Net debt reduced by £5.2 million to £85.8 million down (+ 5.6%) • Further reduction in gearing 1.14 compared to 1.32 in prior half year Neil Kennedy, Milk Link Chief Executive commented: “Milk Link delivered a solid performance in the first six months of the 2011/12 financial year. Whilst from the 1st April the majority of our farmers also benefited in cash flow terms from the ending of our 0.5ppl Member Capital Account levy for longer standing Members.

“Despite the current difficult trading conditions, Milk Link remains positive about the long term prospects for the dairy sector. As such, in line with our overall objective of delivering a sustainable future for our dairy farmers, we are committed to

implementing an ambitious growth agenda. This is based upon a major programme of capital investment at our Lockerbie, Taw Valley and Trevarrian creameries to grow both our processing capacity and capabilities which will, in due course, generate greater returns for our Members.”

With regards to the second half outlook, Neil Kennedy commented: “Looking forward, the macroeconomic and trading conditions will continue to be very demanding. Nevertheless, we expect our full year financial performance to continue to be in line with our budget. Indeed, we believe that Milk Link is well positioned to address the challenges that confront the industry and that we will be able to provide our Members with the support and stability they need to sustain their dairy enterprises.”

Pick of the crop could earn fewer farm inspections The Government’s full and final response to the Task Force report will be published in early 2012. armers with the best track records on environmental protection and animal welfare standards could soon earn the right to operate more freely, Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said today.

Unveiling the Government’s interim response to the Farming Regulation Task Force, Mr Paice highlighted a number of areas where the government hopes to reduce regulatory burdens on farmers, whilst still achieving high standards for the environment, health and animal welfare.

The interim response gives a brief overview of the progress

made so far to address the challenges set out by the Task Force report.

The new approaches being explored include: · Changing the way we work with the farming industry to build a closer working partnership that helps the industry and cuts red tape; · Making inspections more risk-based and targeted at farms which are at greater risk of breaching regulations; · Co-ordinating inspections to reduce the number of duplicate visits by different enforcement bodies and therefore minimizing disruption to farmers

businesses; · Simplifying the complex environmental requirements to give much clearer guidance to farmers about what practical measures they need to take.

Jim Paice said: "Where we can, we’re looking to free up those playing by the rules so they can get on with doing what they do best – running their farms.

“The MacDonald report was big, bold and ambitious, and if industry is ready to play its part, we can make it a reality.”

Other red-tape busting measures proposed include:

· Bringing together local councils and affected parties to combat fly-tipping on private land; · Reducing paperwork for farmers and putting more records and guidance online; · Better information sharing between agencies so more forms will be pre-populated and easier to fill in; and · An implementation group, chaired by Richard MacDonald to oversee progress and delivery.

Jim Paice continued: “If we want a successful and competitive farming industry then the rules and regulations need to be drawn up with farmers in mind. Most farmers want to do the right thing and push standards even higher what we need to do is help them do that in as simple and effective way as possible.

“It also means getting farmers and NGOs to agree on what the best way forward is, and I want to thank the NFU and RSPB for working so constructively with us to inform our interim response.”

Mr Paice highlighted a number of areas where the government hopes to reduce regulatory burdens on farmers, whilst still achieving high standards for the environment, health and animal welfare.

Richard MacDonald who led the Task Force said: “I am greatly reassured by the progress that has been made in response to the Task Force. Many of our recommendations were bold and challenging and for some there are no quick fixes. Our recommendations require change in both government and the farming industry and I am encouraged that both are actively engaging to develop solutions now for the future. I am looking forward to helping drive implementation and making all this real.”

The Government’s full and final response to the Task Force report will be published in early 2012.

HGCA survey indicates reduced threat from wheat bulb fly this autumn Anyone concerned about this pest should view the survey in full on the HGCA website. esults from HGCA’s autumn wheat bulb fly survey show that infestation levels are lower than the high levels seen in 2010.

A total of 41 fields considered at risk of wheat bulb fly infestation were sampled for this year’s survey, conducted on behalf of HGCA by ADAS, with additional support from Syngenta.

In eastern England average egg numbers were 179/m2 compared with 309/m2 in 2010.

High, or very high egg populations were found in five (19%) of the sampled fields, which compares favourably with levels of 55% and 28% for 2010 and 2009 respectively. This year’s high risk fields followed vining peas and potatoes.

In northern England, there were no fields in the very high risk category, but three (20%) deemed high risk. However, average counts for northern England remained similar to 2010 at 161/m2. High risk sites in the north followed potatoes.

“There is no simple answer why we have seen a decrease in egg populations this year, but numbers are thought to be linked to pre-harvest rainfall, and the dry conditions experienced, particularly in the East, may have had an effect,” commented Steve Ellis, ADAS Entomologist.

Overall, 20% of the 41 fields sampled had egg populations greater than the high-risk 250/m2 threshold, compared to the long-term average of 23%.

“Even though this year’s results are lower than last

season, growers should still consider the risk in their region carefully when deciding what action to take,” said Caroline Nicholls, HGCA Research Manager.

“Late-autumn sown crops in high-risk areas will require the most attention, but even moderate risk areas should be carefully managed as the pest threshold is much lower for crops sown from November onwards. Anyone concerned about this pest should view the survey in full on the HGCA website and also HGCA Topic Sheet 99, where there is useful information on control options,” she added.

All cereals, except oats, can be attacked by wheat bulb fly and the pest is most common in the eastern counties, the east Midlands and north east England. Eggs are laid in late summer, and the sites chosen by females for egg-laying vary from year to year.

‘Huge rise’ in grain market speculation No room for complacency - advice is to spread the risk when it comes to your grain marketing. he impact of speculation in the commodity markets on cereal prices was spelled out by grain trader Glenn Mason when he spoke to farmers at Halesworth, Suffolk.

An estimated $431 billion was currently invested in commodity funds, Mr Mason, head of committed grain marketing for Openfield, told the meeting organised by chartered accountants Lovewell Blake and Suffolk Coastal NFU branch.

This level of investment was up by more than 60 per cent compared with the first spike in the grain market four years ago – but the future pattern was unclear in a period when the market had become more challenging and volatile than at anytime in his 35 years in the trade.

The market had become victim to global macro-

economics with fund managers often reacting to headlines from individual countries.

The US maize crop was the key driver of global markets — representing 40 per cent of world production and with almost one third of this going into ethanol production. The level of wheat stocks was not an issue with three of the biggest crops in the past three years.

Yet, said Mr Mason, consumption of wheat was growing particularly in China and other Asian countries adopting a more Western diet — and there was no room for any complacency.

His advice was to spread the risk in grain marketing by putting a proportion of the crop into pools, sell some forward and keep some back to take advantage of any spike in prices.

HGCA updates grain storage guide Third edition reflects findings of the LINK project. ith wet grain being a particular issue for some growers this season, next month’s UK Grain Event will see HGCA publish the third edition of its Grain Storage Guide.

The guide, which has been a key industry reference point since it was first published in 1999, has been updated as a result of a five-year Defra LINK project, led by Fera, with HGCA funding and industry support from millers, maltsters, AIC and the NFU. The third edition incorporates a basic HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) approach to store management, reflecting the findings of the LINK project which confirmed best practice principles.

Farmers strengthen their cashflow through forward contracts Knowledge is power at Agritechnica 2011.

gritechnica 2011 is where the entire agricultural sector - from farmers to equipment distributors and the scientific community - can come together to meet, network and invest in the sector. While volatility in prices and market forces may be beyond our control, the knowledge on how to ride the crests and troughs of cyclical trends could give agriculturalists a sense of confidence and better management of their business risks.

A

Increasing price volatility means that marketing is becoming ever more significant for each individual farm.

The risks in agriculture must be managed, and the responsibility for this increasingly rests with farmers themselves.

Risk management is necessary in a number of situations in the agricultural sector. The volatility of prices for all agricultural products has increased steeply in recent years, mainly as a result of the liberalization of agricultural markets. At the same time, policymakers have reduced measures to support and secure markets to a minimum.

The two main risks in agriculture – harvest and price fluctuations – are likely to increase even further in the future. On one hand climate change will lead to a higher number of extreme weather events that may have negative effects on yields, while on the other a worldwide imbalance between supply and demand can be expected in the long term due

to structural factors. Demand for food is increasing because of population and income growth, while at the same time water, land available for cropping and energy are becoming scarce. Lower global stocks of commodity crops will further magnify these price fluctuations.

The responsibility for managing risks that used to be reduced by price and market support mechanisms now lies in the hands of the farmers.

Securing cashflow through forward contracts Risk management doubles as a cashflow safeguarding measure in the agricultural sector. That is why farmers are accessing market-based instruments more often in their marketing activities.

In practice, this means that the selling prices are secured at an early stage, and leading farms may have already planned their sales before the seed is even sown.

Risk management instruments for agriculture are viable when they stabilize farm incomes effectively. After all, the necessary investments for renewal and maintenance – and above all farm growth and investments in agricultural machinery and technical progress – all depend on this.

Price and production risks make the strongest impact Selling price and yield are generally considered to be the greatest risks in the agricultural sector. Risk management starts with decisions at individual farm level. What products are to be produced? How is the land to be divided up between crops? What production factors, machinery and

methods are to be used? Risks can generally be reduced by diversifying activities within and outside the farm.

Against this background, marketing in agriculture is in a state of major upheaval. During the 2011 harvest year it has become quite clear in the farming sector that traditional marketing avenues have been consigned to history.

It is evident that farms are now tending to market their products via forward contracts. Increasing price volatility means that marketing is becoming ever more significant for each individual farm.

In the case of oilseed rape, early marketing via forward contracts has been the norm for years now. The classic rule of thumb is to market 30% of the crop after sowing, another 30% in the spring, when it is evident how the crop stands have come through the winter, and the rest during harvest – or, if the price level is appropriate and storage facilities exist, at a later time.

This year we have seen wheat for the 2011 harvest being sold in large quantities in advance for the first time. Driving these forward sales were the price peaks at the beginning of the year when European bread wheat had risen to €280/t on the Matif commodity futures exchange in Paris.

This year German farmers marketed 40% of their grain before harvest via advance contracts, most of which were concluded in February. In many cases the contracts achieved were at least €20/t more than the subsequent harvest price. This relieved the financial burden on

farms at a very early date and defused the marketing situation during the harvest because less free wheat had to be sold.

In the meantime various contract models have become established in grain and oilseed trading that are derived from current exchange listing prices.

This secures a price level for farmers that can be agreed in advance. However, there is even more to it than that because the credit worthiness of agricultural companies as business partners in major financial commitments, such as purchasing machinery, is also supported.

According to DLG market expert Mechthilde Becker, Safeguarding the cashflow of farms through appropriate marketing models for their crops also brings advantages for the downstream agricultural businesses too, such as financing and handling of machinery purchases. Agricultural machinery dealers can rely more strongly on harvest prices in agriculture being secured at an early stage through forward selling, and this, in turn, allows farm businesses to budget for input costs with much more confidence.

The new Maxxum series is equipped with several technical innovations, including the Case IH EfficientPower system. At the heart of this system are the SCR exhaust-gas-cleaning and performance-optimised engines that offer reduced emissions and lower fuel consumption.

New Maxxum models also benefit from the Multicontroller operator console, which allows all of the tractor's functions to be controlled from the right-hand armrest. Consequently, the Maxxum operating concept now mirrors that of larger Case IH tractors, such as the Puma and Magnum, providing the same high level of operator comfort.

In a further enhancement, an electro-hydraulic joystick can be added to the Multicontroller console, allowing convenient control of a front loader, where fitted.

For 2012, Case IH Puma series tractors benefit from some key upgrades. All Puma models in the new range are equipped with the EfficientPower system, which delivers numerous fuelsaving advantages in the field as well as increased power from

the performance-optimised engines. The new Puma EP models can also be equipped with a power-beyond connection, while a front linkage management system is available as an option.

Case IH also offers an innovative ABS braking system on all Puma models between 130 and 230hp. The optional advanced ABS system offers additional functions such as Steer-by-ABS, and is compatible with both hydraulic and pneumatic trailer brakes.

Case IH continues to enhance its precision farming products. The new AFS Pro 700 touch screen monitor has greater processing capability yet retains a lightweight design.

All Quadtrac, Steiger, Magnum, Puma and Maxxum tractors, and Axial-Flow combines, are compatible with the AFS Pro 700 monitor, which can be integrated seamlessly into the Multicontroller armrest.

New functions have been added to enable crop-related tracking, meaning that cropspecific data can now be recorded using the GPS network and Accuguide accuracy of up

to 2cm can be achieved.

New Pronto seed drills for large farms Horsch is renowned for its no-till seed drills and launches three new models at Argitechinca. The Pronto SW is based on the successful Pronto DC and features a separate seed wagon with a 17,000 litre hopper for seed and fertiliser.

Especially for large farms in Eastern Europe, Horsch will launch the Pronto NT and the Sprinter NT. These are new notill machines with working widths ranging from 12 to 24 metre, which enable direct sowing without any previous cultivation.

New Leeb sprayers The Leeb GS 8000, which will be presented at the Agritechnica, is a further development of the plant protection sprayer GS 6000 with a tank capacity of 8,000 litres.

Horsch UK plans to show the sprayer at the Cereals Show in 2012 in order to get feedback from customers.

Student lands dream job at Chirk Castle Full time National Trust post for Walford student.

om Moore, aged 19, from Llansilin near Oswestry has recently secured a full time position as a National Trust ranger at Chirk Castle.

On leaving school Tom’s dream of working outdoors first lead him to enrol on a construction course at another college, but it wasn’t long before he found the lack of practical

work and the reliance on computers did nothing to feed his interest or enthusiasm. It did, however, help him realise his career ambitions lay in a different direction.

His passion for the countryside lead him to further explore his options at other colleges and when he came across the BTEC National

Diploma in Countryside Management offered by Walford and North Shropshire College he thought he might just have found exactly what he was looking for.

Lecturer Zoe Jones says “Tom has been a highly focused student. From the first year on the course he had a clear picture of where he wanted his path to lead. Throughout his study he maintained high grades and a really good attitude to his work.

His dedication and hard work earned him the Amenity Land Services Cup, BTEC National Diploma in Countryside Management, Year 2 Student of the Year Award, 2011. Just two days after the award ceremony he started a job as a National Trust ranger at Chirk castle.”

Working at Chirk castle as a countryside ranger involves Tom in a wide range of tasks including engaging visitors, working with volunteers and animals, forestry work, and general ground and vehicle maintenance.

Without the course giving me the work experience, practical skills, reinforcing my desire and encouraging me in my choice of career, I doubt I would be doing what I am today The course taught me most of the practical skills I need to use every day. I find that as well as being able to apply the practical skills and knowledge gained from the course I am able to discuss and offer advice in staff meetings. Very easy to fit and with cut-outs for the camera etc. the Silicone Skin gives you some extra confidence when transporting your iPad 2, both in terms of a careless knock and in the secure handling of the device.

Again, no screen protection is supplied with this case so a transparent screen protector might also be recommended.

The squared back design offers excellent grip and some rear shock absorption but does seem to gather dirt in-between the “tracks”.

But it's not only outside that you'll want to be using your iPad 2.

We really like this case – it adds almost no bulk at all to the iPad and yet protects both the back cover (via a hard plastic shell which clips onto the corners of your device) and the front screen (with a “Smart Cover” alike).

This front cover is panelled allowing it to fold in a very similar fashion to the Apple original, turning into a raised stand for typing and adopting a more upright position for watching films etc.

The front cover also benefits from embedded magnets which will turn your device on and off when opened/closed. Excellent.

The similarity to Apple's Smart Cover don't end there.

The inner surface of the cover is of a soft suede like material which will be nice to your screen (and back), though no claims are made about it possessing any kind of cleaning action. Indeed, just like the Apple Smart Cover, a light imprint where the front panel folds are will show up on the screen over time – but this merely requires a quick wipe (with a suitable cloth) to remove along with the usual ubiquitous finger marks.

Perhaps the only drawbacks will depend on personal preference. Firstly, the cover is made out of a PU material and not pure leather.

This makes it easy to wipe over and perhaps a little more resilient, though you might be expecting proper leather for the money.

Secondly, perhaps a clear plastic window in the back cover might have been nice to display your lovely Apple logo through – though this is just a “nicety”.

Disappointingly, this is the only sort of screen protection that you get with this case, although Otterbox say that they will ship a clear screen protector with the case when purchased direct.

Some kind of transparent screen protection is a must when out and about using dirty fingers and we do find this quite a bizarre omission from the standard package – especially since this is an Otterbox we are talking about!

So, a great case then (but with a few caveats) – which is especially suited to operating outdoors - and is made even better with the addition of the Utility Series Latch (up next).

Snugg Ultra Thin case Did we find any issues whilst using the Utility Latch? Well, yes and no.

We found that you have to be mindful of how you position the elastic straps so as not to cover the sleep/wake button but when combined with the Defender case, this isn't really an issue as the button is well protected from accidental pressing by the silicone cover.

The volume button is also obscured – but again, this shouldn't be a problem due to the nature of the accessory's use (after all, why would you want to change the volume whilst out collecting data?) – and you can still get to it by moving the elastic in any case.

There may be a possibility of the elastic straps coming off the device – although not so much when combined with the Defender case

RIDBA launches ‘get out of jail’ cards Avoid criminal offences when new legislation comes into force. orty manufacturers and fabricators of steelframed buildings for the agricultural and industrial markets have attended the launch of two “helping hands” to keep them out of handcuffs.

The pair of “helping hands” is a factory production control manual and design protocol they require to comply with CE marking. This is not currently compulsory in the UK but after 2013 it will be … and non-compliance will become a criminal offence.

The manual and protocol have been drawn up over 18 months for members of the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA) by TRADA Technology, a leading independent research, consultancy, testing and information provider for the UK construction industry, and the Steel Construction Institute (SCI). The link-up markedly reduces RIDBA members‟ costs in meeting the CE marking requirements.

RIDBA members at the documents‟ launch at the National Motorcycle Museum near Coventry on Wednesday 5th October were treated to a preview of their contents by project co-ordinator Niresh Somlie of BM TRADA, notified body for CE Marking, and SCI associate director Dr Martin Heywood. Advice on the welding requirements of EN 1090 was also given by Mick Hurt of NDT Services.

The documents will help members demonstrate both compliance with the Construction Products Regulation - which is mandatory - and that the buildings are fit for purpose under BS EN 1090 „Execution of Steel Structures and Aluminium Structures‟. There are timber- based standards in the pipeline as well.

Nigel Deville, director of RIDBA member Deville and Lear, said: “It has been useful to learn about what‟s involved but it‟s also scared us stupid!”

And John Allinson, director of Simpson & Allinson, added: “I think RIDBA have done a really good job to get the process rolling at an early stage. There is still quite a lot of work for us to do but it is making the process more understandable.”

Members of RIDBA supply over 50% of the UK agricultural market and over 12% of the total single-storey steel-framed market. They erect more than 5,500 agricultural and industrial buildings a year and supply an area of almost 2million²m of steel-framed buildings.

RIDBA is also holding two regional seminars to advise members and prospective members on CE marking – one already on October 26th in Carlisle at the Best Western Cumbria Park Hotel, and a forthcoming one on November 9th in Swindon, at the Blunsdon House Hotel, both between 10am and 3pm.

Local steel frame builders offered help with legislation dvice on how steel-framed building manufacturers and fabricators in the north-west can minimise the cost of complying with soon-to-be compulsory legislation was offered in a seminar in Carlisle last month organised by the Rural and Industrial Design and Building Association (RIDBA).

The seminar, held at the Best Western Cumbria Park Hotel on Scotland Road, last month explained how CE marking will affect local steel frame manufacturers in the agricultural and industrial sectors, and how RIDBA can help them comply more cost-effectively.

This leg-up on the legislative ladder was created by RIDBA in a linkup with TRADA Technology, the leading independent timber research, consultancy, testing and information provider for the UK construction industry, and the Steel Construction Institute (SCI).

The link-up gives RIDBA members preferential access to the factory production control manual and the design protocol required by fabricators for the CE marking of steel framed buildings. This will markedly reduce their costs in meeting the requirements to CE Mark their frames.

Farmers and contractors looking to generate extra income can therefore benefit from this new advance in precision farming technology. The ability to now measure sugar levels in real time also provides the opportunity to manage the silage additive process more efficiently, using a range of commercially available automatic variable rate application systems.

This latest version of HarvestLab is the first commercial system of its kind on

the market, and is based on near infrared (NIR) sensor technology manufactured by Zeiss Jena. Using the additional crop data, the HarvestLab sensor can help livestock farmers to optimise their herd’s performance from silage, more accurately balanced against the correct amounts of extra boughtin feeds when required.

Similarly, operators of bioenergy plants can more easily calculate the optimum amounts of biomass material to use for efficient energy production. John Deere’s 7050 Series i-specification selfpropelled forage harvesters are ideally suited to harvesting maize and other energy crops for biomass, and can chop consistently to the necessary length for bioenergy plants,

down to 4mm.

The forager’s integrated ‘intelligent’ technology package includes the HarvestLab dry matter sensor and AutoLOC. Using the machine’s infinitely variable transmission, this already provides automatic adjustment of the length of cut depending on the dry matter content of the crop being harvested. This is based on settings programmed in by the operator on the machine’s in-

HarvestLab also records all the necessary crop and harvest data for the contractor’s invoicing process.

Mounted on the forager spout and taking crop readings 17 times per second, the HarvestLab system has been independently verified by DLG to consistently deliver +/-2 per cent accuracy; this figure improved to below 0.8 per cent when dry matter was averaged across tested samples and varieties of forage maize, compared with lab analysis.

Kubota compact tractors help to rejuvenate synthetic turf Tired pitches restored to glory. ith a reputation for excellence in the turf care market, two Kubota tractors are now playing a role in the rejuvenation of synthetic grass surfaces.

Replay Maintenance is using Kubota B2530 and B1620 compact tractors to power its specialist Beaver Rejuvenation machines which restore tired synthetic pitches to their former glory.

In recent years, organisations from schools to premiership teams have swapped traditional turf for synthetic pitches to benefit from cost savings and their ability to sustain intensive use through all weather conditions; but everything has a finite life and with sand-filled sports surfaces, the sand becomes contaminated and compacted. This leads to reduced drainage, poor play surface and player discomfort.

And that’s where Replay Maintenance comes in. A specialist in synthetic turf maintenance and repair, the company is a partner of the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) and the UK licence holder for the specialist Replay Rejuvenation process. This uses the patented Beaver Rejuvenation machine to force compressed air into the

weave to remove the compacted and contaminated sand.

The company operates two sizes of Beaver; the B2000M powered by the Kubota B2530 compact tractor for renovating full-sized rugby, football and hockey pitches, and the B1000 powered by the Kubota B1620 which is used for tennis courts.

Each tractor is specially adapted by Replay Maintenance’s sister company, Charles Lawrence International (CLI) for the task. The axle is moved backwards to widen the wheel base, and the hydraulics are modified to incorporate lift arms and allow the Beaver’s auger to run alongside the tractor body.

Once the removal process is completed, new sand is brushed into the synthetic weave to restore the surface. The whole process, which takes around five days to complete a 6000m² synthetic sports surface, is designed to minimise downtime, meaning the pitch isn’t out of action for long.

Garry Martin, Director of Replay Maintenance, said: "It’s important to remove as much sand as possible from the weave, so we needed a tractor with a large enough engine to power the Beaver yet one that is easy to operate at slow speeds.

"The Kubota B2530 and B1620 compact tractors not only meet these requirements but offer a robust design and are extremely reliable.

This is essential because we’re contracted to do a job within a specific time - for instance to get a premiership pitch ready for the start of the season – and matches simply can’t be delayed."

In addition to holding the UK licence, Replay Maintenance also sells licences for the Replay Rejuvenation process to companies based overseas. The Beaver machines and

modified Kubota compact tractors are then supplied by CLI. John Bramwell, Operations/Commercial Director at CLI, added: "When we first looked for a tractor to power the Beaver, we turned to Kubota; as market leaders in compact tractors they have an excellent reputation with an extensive dealer network, so spares, maintenance and repairs won’t be a problem for our customers.

"Most importantly, Kubota has worked closely with us throughout the development process, which ensures that when we export the modified tractors to our customers overseas, they are still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty and accepted by the customer’s local dealer.

Of course, dealer support is just as important for Replay Maintenance as it is for their customers. The company uses local dealer, Farmstar, near Newark, for servicing, maintenance and spares and Garry reports that their level of service is ‘top notch’.
