FROM THE CEO This is my first column for the Farmlander since I joined Farmlands as CEO in midOctober. Since starting, I have spent a lot of time with Farmlands people, out in our stores, with our Regional Managers and in front of our shareholders. The more I see of Farmlands, the more excited I get about the opportunities we have to build a very special co-operative that plays a vital role in keeping our agricultural sector the most productive and highest quality in the world. Our people are incredibly passionate about our business and, at least as importantly, they really know our shareholders/customers and vice versa. It is clear that our relationship with and knowledge of our shareholders (our customer base) is to a level you just don’t see in other business segments. This is something very special that I believe we can build further on.

It is very early days for me yet and I do not want to sound like I have answers when I don’t. But my early interactions are telling me that if we take this special relationship we have with our customers as the starting point, we can build process and capability back from there to ensure we have a co-operative that leads the sector in people, relationships, capability, knowledge and expertise.

METHOD 1. In a bowl, place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Then drain and reserve the lime juice, ensuring all of the avocados have been coated.

2. Using a masher, add the cayenne, cumin and salt

Introducing Peter Reidie, Farmlands Chief Executive “The way I’m going to learn is by wearing out the shoe leather and using my ears at the same ratio as they are to my mouth – two to one.”

Farmlands’ new Chief Executive, Peter Reidie has already decided on how he is going to spend his first few months in the job. Acting Chief Executive Tony van der Hoorn is remaining in the role until the end of the calendar year, so Peter can give himself the opportunity to cover the country and learn what makes Farmlands great.

“I’m sure it will be a challenge, because I’m very keen to get in and do something,” Peter says.

“But I really want to spend the first couple of months learning what I don’t know about the business.”

Invercargill born and bred, Peter has been appointed following 7 years with Goodman Fielder, including time as Managing DIrector Australia/ New Zealand. Seeing his initial role as “being very much a listener rather than a talker”, Peter is matter of fact when it comes to how he plans to begin.

“Just being a sponge. So taking all that on board, whether it be from employees, staff, shareholders, customers in shops, suppliers, people who know us and have learnt from us or former leaders of the business. I just want to get a great background and get to know the business, before making some calls on the business.”

Peter left home at 18 and spent his first year working as a truck driver, which he believes gave him “a real good background and grounding”.

“And I always know, if worse comes to worst, I can go back to being a truck driver and I’ll be a pretty good one.”

After a year on the roads, Peter went to the University of Otago, where he studied economics. His broad life at Otago included becoming involved in student politics, which gave him exposure to university unions and student associations.

The involvement in student politics combined well with his economics degree, as Peter went to work as an economist with the New Zealand government. Peter describes his stint in Wellington as “pretty exciting times”, although it ended rather unceremoniously.

“It ended up that my last job there was working for Richard Prebble, who was Minister for SOEs at the time,” Peter explains. “Unfortunately, he put in my contract that I had a job while he had a job and for those of you who remember, Richard Prebble got fired – so I did too.”

Peter moved into the private sector, where he would spend the next 20 years working across three countries.

“I’ve got around a bit – I have a good background in terms of economics and I’ve done key functional roles in finance, sales and marketing. I’ve also been a General Manager and led businesses in Australia, New Zealand and America,” he says.

His time in the United States coincided with the arrival of his twin sons, now 8, who are now joined by their 16 month old sister. Family time is important to Peter, who describes himself as a “very typical New Zealander”. Along with a passion for the outdoors and rugby (correctly predicting Dan Carter would be the kingmaker for the Rugby World Cup final), he looks forward to further developing some land he owns

in Glenorchy, to turn it into a family paradise.

Away from home and back at the office, Peter says he looks forward to his new challenge. Farmlands is a broader entity to what he is used to – and he is excited about the change in environment.

“One of the reasons (for choosing Farmlands) is the fact that it is in the agricultural sector and New Zealand’s success rides and falls based on its performance,” he says.

“I saw an opportunity for me to come to Farmlands and help with that, which was appealing.

“And then the co-operative model really appeals to me. I think having our customers as our shareholders should drive an accountability and a performance and a closeness to our marketplace that’s very hard to replicate in other industries.”

Peter encourages staff and shareholders to share their points of view and knowledge about the business, so he can create a vivid picture of how to make Farmlands even better. While he admits he does not yet have his own vision for the future of Farmlands, he is quick to reinforce how much he believes in the

business. “We have a good business.

One of the really appealing things I like about it is that if we do well, agriculture is doing well and if agriculture does well, New Zealand does well. So we do have a noble purpose, where we can really help our country and I’m looking forward to being part of that.”

Introducing Rob Hewett — your new Farmlands Director Following the 2015 Director Elections, there is one new face on the Farmlands Board of Directors.

Two Directors – David Jensen in the North Island and Joe Ferraby in the South Island – were re-elected. The newly elected Rob Hewett will replace long-serving Farmlands Director Howie Gardner, who did not seek re-election.

Rob is no stranger to governance in the rural sector. Rob has been Chairman of Silver Fern Farms since December 2013 and has been a member of their Board since 2008.

Along with being Chair of the Clutha District Economic Development Agency, Rob remains Director of a number of other companies and is a former Board member of FarmIQ. Rob is a 7th generation farmer, who has farmed in the Clutha District

After Shell, his farming career was complemented by his own consultancy business, which ran from 2003 until 2010. The majority of consultancy work focused on helping chain retailers deal with supermarkets encroaching on their business.

In fact, his Marketing thesis involved comparing the marketing differences between red and white meat. “With my fuel and retail experience, I’m looking forward to understanding the business and adding further value through governance,” Rob says.

Ideal role in the industry: I am keeping my options very wide open and Lincoln University has been providing me the insight into the wide range of possible career paths I can go down. However, throughout my time at Lincoln University I have taken an interest in the soils side of agriculture. Either pathway would help expand my knowledge on farming and get myself out around the country to see as much of the agricultural industry as I can. It takes a special operation to be successful as a one dimensional entity. There are always going to be plenty of examples of businesses that stick with what they know and flourish. But what about during the tough times? Do you ride them out, or do you get creative?

“Flying helicopters was something I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid,” Mike explains. “In simple terms, it was a childhood dream.

For a number of our businesses, this is a common theme.

Farming traditionally has to roll with the punches – when times are tough, they are tough for many. For those that service the agricultural industry, difficult times mean tighter purse strings.

What was once a staple diet becomes an inconvenient fast.

In the mid-1990s, Mike got his commercial fixed wing licence.

While working in Fairlie as a loader driver, the situation changed and Mike took up the opportunity to purchase the contracting business he had been working for – but transitioning from planes to helicopters was still on the back burner.

A number of Farmlands shareholders have looked outside the square to find new ways to keep cash flow coming. Whether diversifying operations, or starting from scratch, complacency has no place in this business.

“With helicopters I was a late starter. I always harboured the ambition to use our business to base that (flying) on – but I was getting to 35 and 36 and thought it was never going to happen.

One business that branched out is Prosser Contracting, based near Fairlie. Contracting on their own account since 2000, Mike and Kate Prosser rode the waves of the ups and downs of farming with their clients in the district. Their business took an unexpected detour on the back of a long-held passion.

“Along the way, there are a lot of things that detract and disrupt and life leads you astray.”

“Then I got a kick up the arse from my wife, who said if I was going to do it, I should just do it.”

Mike’s previous experience meant nothing when it came to helicopters and he had to start from scratch. With Kate’s support, Mike says he was highly motivated to complete his training and went from “ground zero” to his commercial licence in 9 months.

“We got a ground spray season under our belt and then went to get an ag rating the following winter, before offering customers the helicopter side of things.”

The initial decision to focus on the “ground side” of operations paid dividends, as it gave them a better idea of what was possible with helicopter spraying. A new entity, Prosser Heli Ag was created.

“We started doing scenic flights, which came down to utilisation,” Mike says. “To be able to utilise that sort of machinery and expense, you have to get into diversification in the shoulders of the season. That’s where the scenic side of it came into it. Our base in the scenic flights is more the hunters and the fishermen – Fairlie and the Mackenzie Country is on our back door and it is very unique.”

But with a pricy piece of machinery like a helicopter, there are always other ways to keep your business ticking over.

The area offers plenty – and not just for hunter/gatherer consumers. Views through to Mt. Cook, the Two Thumb Range,

where you think, ‘crikey, tomorrow I’ll just be in a helicopter doing the same old thing’.”

Mike says as much as he and Kate love the agricultural side of things, the scenic flight aspect has helped them when things get quieter on the ag side. It has also helped them appreciate their own area and the people they share it with.

“It’s helped our business evolve into that wider gap.”

Another group of shareholders who have diversified their operation are Bay of Plenty’s Bruce and Gill Cameron. Their 700 hectares near Te Puke is as diverse as it gets – operating a dairy unit, sheep and beef operation and kiwifruit as well. It hasn’t all been Bruce and Gill’s doing – in fact, the family history on this farm dates all the way back to 1930, when Bruce’s grandfather purchased a 122 acre dairy farm.

“It’s a bit of an interesting one – that farm was sold out of the family in 1967, in order to buy a bigger block about 20km away.

Interestingly enough, a neighbouring dairy farm came up for sale about 4 years ago and Gill and I bought it. The original land of my grandfather’s dairy was part of the bigger block that we bought.”

“Fairlie is quite a nice area in the high country and it’s got some quite diverse scenery. It never ceases to amaze me – you fly back and you see it and, wow,” he says. “We’re very lucky here, we’ve got quite a bit here that we can take them to – Sutherlands Hut, which dates back to the late 1800s, is New Zealand’s oldest musterers’ hut. We can show them what old time farming here was actually like.”

Five years into their new venture, Mike says the helicopter business “brought the enjoyment side of things” back to work.

“While ag is our mainstay and we both really enjoy it, being a ground based contractor with five trucks is a busy old business and you’re flat out,” he says.

“Helping out when the snow is on, mustering – you never know what your next phone call is going to be. There’s never a time

The repatriation of his grandfather’s land is just another chapter of Bruce’s family tale – one which has been all about re-invention.

The family predominantly ran dairy operations, until Bruce’s father and uncle started their farming careers. They ran a couple of dairy operations and a sheep and beef unit until 1984, when the properties were partitioned up. The dairy farms went to one part of the family, while the other – Bruce’s side – kept the sheep and cattle business, as well as a fledgling kiwifruit operation.

“We planted the first kiwifruit in about 1978 and we have about 50 hectares in kiwifruit now,” Bruce explains. “It was actually 1ha that we planted originally – when I left school I worked down the East Coast before going to Australia. I came home about 1980 and it was my father that instigated those first plantings, after discussion with the family.”

The decision has paid dividends. In addition to being a valuable part of the business, Bruce is now a Director and Deputy Chairman of Zespri. Bruce’s governance experience is not restricted to horticulture – he had a stint as Chairman of Bay of Plenty Rugby for a few years and finished up on the NZRU Board earlier this year.

Sheep and beef, dairy, kiwifruit … maximising the land has become a hallmark of the Cameron family business. It is a philosophy that has rung true right from the moment Bruce and Gill went into partnership with Bruce’s parents, Barry and Mary in 1985. Barry will be a familiar name to a lot of Farmlands shareholders, having been a Director of Farmlands from 1986 to 2001, including a stint as Deputy Chairman.

“In the past, we also had a significant investment in quarrying and road transport,” Bruce says. “We started a quarrying business

in the mid-‘80s and that was sort of when cash flow was pretty difficult in farming, with high interest rates.”

The quarrying venture came from a simple premise – there was an old county quarry on the property and as Bruce says, since there was no RMA at the time, they were able to start excavating rock and pumice under the existing land use by-laws.

“We just needed to get some more cash flow into the business,” he says. “That morphed into a business that had markets in roading construction and supply in Bay of Plenty and the pumice was very much in demand throughout New Zealand – it had some niche markets in masonry, horticulture and all sorts of things.”

The quarry business was eventually sold in 2007. It may have been one less ball in the air – but Bruce says there will always be difficulties when managing a portfolio of interests.

“You grow into it but you realise how important accurate financial recording and reporting are, strong KPIs and of course, the key is to have good people involved.”

A few more good people have started – Bruce and Gill’s daughter Anna and son in law Rikki. This incoming generation will be the fourth generation of the family on the farm and Bruce says their management positions give them the responsibility of covering aspects of the operation.

“For them it’s about self-growth, utilising the different opportunities for their self-improvement and leadership courses.”

Bruce has some simple advice for any business looking to diversify – understand clearly where, how and what the return on investment will be, or should be.

“In today’s business world, farms have to not only have good financial reporting systems – you have to know them inside and out and you need to be able to be fleet of foot and react to changing environments and farming,” he says.

Treating active flystrike It’s difficult to anticipate when the fly pressure will start and often when sheep are bought in, some may already be struck.

In this situation, you need to use a product indicated for the treatment of active flystrike. Bayer provides two distinctive and trusted brands for this, Zapp Encore and Maggo.

Having great products to treat flystrike is important but products are only as good as the care and method of application. This is where early detection is vital, as a small area of dark stain on the rump or wither can be treated easily with a topical treatment over the stain and surrounding wool. If not detected early, the wool can hide a much larger area damaged by maggots. In these cases, removal of wool from the affected area will expose maggots and allow application of insecticides to the traumatised skin and underlying tissue.

Facial eczema could be costing your farm money You may be unaware that some (or all) animals are affected. Skin peeling is the symptom most farmers associate with facial eczema (FE) but that is only half the story.

If a small proportion of the animals develop skin lesions (which appear about 4-6 weeks after the ingestion of spores), there will be a higher number of animals suffering liver damage that have not yet exhibited skin damage.

The cost of facial eczema to the agricultural industry is estimated to be in the hundreds of millions/year*. National economy is one thing – how about the physical cost to your sheep or cattle and your business?

There are many factors associated with a sound facial eczema management programme: • Measure the spore challenge on your own farm, either by pasture spore count (PSC) or faecal spore count (FSC).

• Plan for effective prevention by learning about the many preventative options available and adopt one or more that will suit the farm operation.

• Check the accuracy of measuring equipment and the zinc dose rate for the required number of animals to be protected.

• Check the chosen prevention option is working by collecting blood samples from a representative number of cows (or sheep) and check the GGT levels for signs of liver damage.

Eliminate vat cleaning risks New portable Vat Recirculation Units eliminate the need for someone to get inside the milk silo to manually clean it.

“Designed in-house, these machines will revolutionise an age-old practice that has effectively been a health and safety issue for the dairy industry,” GEA National Sales Manager Colin May says.

“For years, we’ve had people going into the vat, a very confined space, with dangerous chemicals because there simply wasn’t another way to get it clean. These people were exposed to dangerous amounts of chlorine fumes.

Take the nuisance out of nuisance fly The nuisance fly (Stomoxys calcitrans), also commonly called the stable fly, is an aggressive, biting fly of cattle, horses and to a lesser degree, pigs and humans.

They are very common on dairy farms in the North Island and when present in sufficient numbers can cause severe irritation and potential production losses.

Overseas studies indicate nuisance flies can account for up to 9 percent reduction in milk yield1 and decrease growth rates of growing stock2.

The key to minimising nuisance fly irritation is to get in early: • Start fly prevention as soon as flies are noticed in the shed – don’t wait until the population has exploded.

Nuisance flies are well named – they have a painful bite caused by their mouthparts piercing the skin to suck blood. They have a very large proboscis, as shown in the photo below. Both cows and humans alike can become irritable when being chased around by these nasty flies!

• Minimise fly breeding grounds around the shed – clean up effluent and milk spills.

• Use a fly product with persistent activity on cows that discourages flies from landing, as well as killing on contact.

Adult nuisance flies feed on blood once or twice daily. Flies feed for 3-4 minutes per meal. They may ingest three times their body weight in blood – from cows, or even humans.

The flies prefer the legs and belly of cattle, or the arms of farm staff. Especially when you have your hands full, putting on or removing cups!

COOPERS BLAZE is ideal for nuisance fly prevention on dairy cows and control of biting and suckling lice. BLAZE binds to fats and oils on skin and hair and moves around the skin. As it is not absorbed, it has a nil milk withholding period, providing up to 4 weeks’ protection. BLAZE has a secondary benefit of controlling both biting and suckling lice.

BLAZE is a deltamethrin product registered for use in preventing flies and controlling lice in New Zealand. BLAZE is a water-based product, easy to use and is a highly effective repellent.

Outstanding new chemistry for grapes Powdery mildew has become an increasingly problematic disease for grape growers recently. A new product from Bayer CropScience gives growers a powerful new fungicide to incorporate into their powdery mildew spray programmes for this season.

Luna Sensation is a co-formulation containing the new generation SDHI active ingredient fluopyram, in combination with trifloxystrobin.

Luna Sensation provides protectant, systemic and translaminar properties that provide outstanding control of powdery mildew.

The directions for use on the label allow for two applications of Luna Sensation from immediately prior to flowering through to 80 percent capfall at a use rate of 150ml/ha. The withholding period is 80 percent capfall, so do not apply Luna Sensation after 80 percent capfall. When used according to the label directions, Luna Sensation will leave no detectable residues. It is therefore suitable for use in nil-detectable spray programmes.

Achieving thorough spray coverage is critical for powdery mildew control, so when applying Luna Sensation ensure that the water rate used will provide

complete canopy coverage without run-off. Luna Sensation is compatible with key insecticides and fungicides and they can therefore be tank mixed at Luna Sensation’s recommended application timings. However Luna Sensation should not be tank mixed with copper or sulphur formulations.

Weeds don’t stand a chance Pulsar is an easy to use selective, postemergent herbicide that controls a wide range of broadleaf weeds including phenoxy-resistant thistles in cereals, clover, new pasture and peas.

Efficient waste management Biological waste management is an international problem and Connell Brothers – Enzyme Solutions have worked closely with commercial operators to develop a specific blend of microbes and enzymes that will assist in the breakdown of organic matter, reduce harmful effects on the environment and reduce mal-odours.

Activity Sanizyme is a specially designed combination of concentrated enzymes with billions of microbial spores, to help restore this natural microbial balance and promote a more efficient system operation in a chemical free, eco-friendly and natural way.

Thinking about safety this summer With plenty of work to be done on the orchards, vineyards and farms this summer, it’s a good time now to pause and consider keeping yourself and your workers safe during the busy time ahead.

Many businesses employ seasonal labour during the summer period, particularly for the harvesting of fruit crops and field crops. It is very important that your new team members are inducted and welcomed into your business. Your permanent staff will likely all know where those hazards are around the property but your new seasonal staff won’t!

A clear and robust induction plan is necessary for people commencing employment. In addition to information about wages, hours of work and required duties, there must be clear expectations about health and safety.

It is vital that the workforce come kitted out to work outdoors and can comfortably cope with whatever weather conditions come their way.

While energy drinks and coffee might give workers a boost, fresh water is required to maintain hydration.

Workers must be made aware of the hazards of working out in the New Zealand sun, day in and day out. The New Zealand sun can be very different to what many seasonal staff, such as overseas backpackers, may be used to in their home country.

The New Zealand sun is intense and sunburn times are considerably lower than in other parts of the world. It goes without saying that sunscreen and hats are essential for outdoor workers. It is critical that sunscreen be applied to all exposed skin. Most importantly though, to be effective it must be regularly re-applied.

Workers should be drinking at least 2 to 3 litres of water per day. Mild dehydration can negatively affect physical performance and aspects of brain function, leading to reduced endurance. Workers operating in such a state also become much more prone to accident and injury.

Employers and supervisors must ensure that clean, fresh drinking water is readily available and that their teams

Don’t forget that bright sunlight can also damage eyes, so wearing sunglasses will reduce the glare and intensity of the sun’s rays, as well as providing physical protection to the eyes.

It is important to dress to the conditions with loose fitting, lightweight clothes, including collared shirts. Light coloured clothing is preferable, as it won’t absorb as much heat as dark clothing.

Positive signs in first year of IPM brassica trial A trial of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in forage brassica crops has shown positive signs in the first year of a 3 year evaluation conducted by Plant and Food Research, as part of a Ministry for Primary Industries Sustainable Farming Fund (SFF) project titled ‘IPM strategy development and demonstration for forage and seed brassicas’.

An IPM approach to pest control utilises beneficial insects (such as natural predators and parasitoids), cultural controls (such as management methods) and, when necessary, selective insecticides to control pests in target crops. IPM has been used successfully in the New Zealand horticultural industry for many seasons.

The study aims to look at the benefits of an IPM programme in brassica crops, in comparison to the traditional broad spectrum insecticide approach.

Broad spectrum insecticides will have an effect on both target pests and beneficial insects and this approach can lead to spikes in populations of unwanted insects at various parts of the season.

An IPM programme utilises chemistry such as DuPont™ Exirel® insecticide, which selectively targets pests such as cabbage white butterfly (Pieris rapae), diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), soybean looper (Thysanoplusia orichalcea), European leaf miner (Scaptomyza flava) and grey cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae).

It also leaves key beneficial insects in the crop, which are then able to continue to work and help control pests that reappear in the brassica crops.

In trials conducted in the Canterbury region in forage and seed brassica crops, the farmer’s standard programme was compared alongside an IPM strategy.

In all sites predators such as lacewings and ladybirds were active, although it was the parasitic wasps that seemed to have the biggest impact on reducing both aphid and diamondback moth pressure.

Results of the first year highlighted the importance of relying on predators and parasitoids in conjunction with selective products from chemical companies for an overall IPM strategy.

Feedback from farmers that had participated in the first year was generally positive, with a greater understanding of

the role beneficial insects can play in the brassica production system.

Results from the year demonstrated an IPM approach could provide as effective control of pests as the conventional approach, whilst using fewer insecticides.

It was noted that the arrival of pests such as diamondback moth into a crop was generally followed by parasitic wasps and the use of an insecticide such as Exirel could assist in controlling the pests while beneficial numbers were increasing.

The project will continue through to June 2017 and examine yield results and gross margins as part of that process.

It is hoped the expansion of IPM systems could significantly improve the financial and environmental performance of these crops. There is growing interest from farmers wanting to adopt new pest management practices and agronomists wanting to offer a wider range of services to their clients.

The Forage Brassica IPM Development Project is funded through the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Farming Fund, DairyNZ, Forage Innovations Ltd, DuPont (New Zealand) Ltd and the Foundation for Arable Research, with support from farmers and industry advisors.

Californian thistle displays only 10 percent of its biomass above the ground as thistles, while the remaining 90 percent is a huge underground root system. Above ground, “calis” have a huge impact on farm productivity, making pastures difficult to graze as well as impacting on grass growth by shading and depleting moisture and nutrients.

Safe access and site hazard information for fuel tanker drivers Farmlands Fuel has a responsibility to ensure tankers and drivers have safe access – and correct access information – for all customer sites. Any hazards that are identified need to be managed.

This is an ongoing task, with a dedicated Farmlands Fuel team collecting and updating site access data on each customer. Managing changes of circumstance is difficult and we rely on customers calling in or the driver advising us.

If you have changes to your access or delivery site, or have new hazards, can you please inform Farmlands Fuel on 0800 666 626, so your site data can be updated and sent out to the driver.

The Worksafe Code of Practice for above ground fuel on farms identifies key areas of safe access and responsibilities: Access to farm from a public road The delivery tanker should be able to enter the farm safely from a public road.

Access to the fuel tank site using the farm road The access should be safe for the vehicles that your fuel supplier uses.

The access track should be accessible in all weathers. It should also be in good repair.

Trim overhanging trees to avoid damaging the delivery tanker. Take care with any overhead power lines when trimming trees.

We were lucky the tanker escaped any damage – and only the bridge needed to be repaired. But this near miss from a probable major incident was avoidable and highlights the requirement for correct site information and access signage to be made available to our drivers.

Access between the delivery tanker and the fuel tank The area between the delivery tanker and the fuel tank’s filling point should have a good clearway. Obstacles like rubbish, machinery and junk should not be within 3 metres of the tank legs.

This means the driver can safely move between the truck and the tank ladder.

November Livestock Report Unusual weather patterns are leading to challenges in various regions. This is creating some challenges for farmers in their decision making processes. Farmlands

Livestock is available to help shareholders, as it continues to establish itself as the trusted team of choice in the New Zealand livestock market.

Sheep and Beef The high schedules we saw a month ago have eased now to a level one could describe as ordinary, apart from perhaps prime beef, which seems to be holding up a little better due to low supplies, which is creating competition.

Store beef cattle prices have been very strong over the last month, with prices in excess of $3.00kg/lw for both yearlings and 2 year olds. Our spring cattle sale held in Central Otago produced some outstanding cattle that had been wintered on fodder beet, with both yearlings and 2 year olds showing much superior weight gains over winter on this sort of wintering programme. An example of this was a particular line of Angus yearling steers that last year were 300kg and $900 – the same cattle from the same Vendor this year were 356kg and made $1,150.

A large number of the 2 year olds were purchased by meat processing companies, illustrating the very forward condition of the animals.

We have cattle sales coming up as we go to print in Gore, Palmerston and Haast, which all produce good opportunities for shareholders to purchase genuine beef cattle from run type country that are renowned for shifting and adjusting to finishing type country.

Old seasons’ lamb kill has been very busy over the last month out of Canterbury, with a large number of heavier lambs going to the North Island for kill at Ovation’s Feilding plant and local works space has been very tight. We have seen the schedule peak at slightly over $6.00 per kg but only for a very short period and then fall away very quickly to around $5.70 at present. There would appear to be some downward pressure on the lamb schedule going forward and reports from meat companies of wanting to see it in the low $5.00 mark around Christmas.

Store lamb prices have been very strong, with old seasons being in strong demand by farmers looking to fill the gap between old and new season. New season store lambs have come to the market in Canterbury 3 weeks earlier than normal this year, reflecting the dry conditions and lack of feed in the North in particular. We have seen prices around $2.80kg/lw, with that easing in recent times to $2.50-$2.60kg/lw as schedules slide backwards.

Grazing We are seeing significant lifts in growth rates in heifers at present from 1 month ago, as a result of an improvement in feed conditions and environmental conditions. This is very timely with mating now upon us and most bulls in place. Demand for heifer grazing has increased dramatically since we have seen the pay-out projections increase, to the extent we are really struggling to find grazing for calves for the new season. We would welcome any enquiries about weight gain heifer grazing for the coming season going forward, remembering that these contracts offer 17 months of guaranteed income at a predetermined level, giving unbeatable cash flow

Feed sales of new season grass in silage/baleage has been very slow, with low levels of demand from the dairy industry as they revert back to low input production.

This has had the effect of forcing grass and winter feed producing farmers into looking at other options, which may well leave a shortfall for winter grazing, especially with dry conditions prevailing in areas where traditionally a lot of winter grazing is undertaken.
