Mobile Urban Stage

What is MUSe? MUSe stands for Mobile Urban Stage, but by taking the term “stage� as a verb, MUSe is rather an active device that stages events at particular urban sites. Furthermore, MUSe, as in the term’s classical sense, inspires artistic works and is a co-participant with the artists during creative performances. As such, MUSe is an intelligent and collaborative technological apparatus that will support research-creation agendas seeking to understand the relation of the urban form and the formation of publics through arts and ideas, media and mediation. The overarching theme is to tell stories about the city and its civic culture. MUSe initially is a physical artifact that demarcates space for the stage or site of the performance, the space of public participation, or the integration of the two.


Deployment

Once MUSe is deployed to a site, it understands itself in relation to its surroundings. MUSe notices movements and rates of human occupancy as well as environmental conditions such as daylight and temperature. This data becomes material that informs the artists, suggesting the kind of performance that may be most appropriate to the situation, as well as the public at large, either directly through on-site ambient feedback in the form of sound and lighting, or uploaded as web content.


Proposed Scenario Solo Performance | Mime The live performance of the mime is recorded and simultaneously played back with delays and digital effects on the LED video wall. The mime then interacts not only with the public but also with MUSe’s interpretative playback of the performance. After this demonstration, the audience may also join in, take the place of the mime, and play with MUSe. deployment: 3D camera/master control tower, LED video wall; inputs: 3D timeof-flight video capture, infrared motion detectors; outputs: LED video wall


Proposed Scenario Musical Performance Two audio towers and the master control tower are deployed to create a three-cornered perimeter that serves not only as the stage for the performance but also establishes the audio-field through which passersby may enter. At night, arrays of LED RGB strips emit ambient light from the towers to create a synesthetic visual complement to the soundscape. deployment: 3-tower perimeter; inputs: microphoned sound; outputs: amplification, ambient lighting via LED strips.


Proposed Scenario A/V Installation | Interactive Ground Animation Sited at a busy pedestrian thoroughfare, a 3D time-of-flight camera captures peoples’ locations and movements within a four-cornered perimeter. MUSe tracks the action of footsteps, dancing, jumping, and skipping, then complements these movements with laser-light projections rendered in various hues and animated geometric patterns. Various sound effects, musical or environmental, like the sound of splashing water, are coupled with the animations. deployment: 4-tower perimeter; inputs: 3D video capture, IR motion detectors; outputs: amplified sound effects, laser light projection


Proposed Scenario A/V Installation | Architecture as Stageset An architectural faรงade acts as a screen for an interactive video projection. Using projective mapping technology, MUSe creates a interactive 3D model of the actual building, but as bricks become pixels upon the MUSe LED userinterface, participants are empowered to virtually reconstruct the building facade. deployment: 4-tower linear array in relation to existing edifices; inputs: 3D time-of-flight video capture, infrared motion detectors; outputs: amplification, video projection


Proposed Scenario A/V Installation | Immersive Environments At an abandoned industrial warehouse, MUSe uses 3D time-of-flight cameras and video projectors to mirror and augment the interior and its inhabitants with animated effects and time delay. At first glance it appears to be a realtime mirror, but in effect, the time delay disorients, allowing for a reexamination of identity in relation to ones sense of place. The initial MUSe prototype will consist of two dedicated audio towers, one dedicated 3D-cameraequipped tower, one dedicated l a s e r- p ro j e c t i o n - e q u i p p e d tower that also functions as the ensemble’s master control, and one LED video wall. This is the minimum baseline configuration required to accommodate the first series of scenarios to be field tested. These elements together -- (4) towers and (1) LED video wall -- form an eight-foot square cube, which facilitates its transport. Diagrams, drawings, and equipment spreadsheets that specify provider, model numbers, and pricing are complete due to aforementioned seed funding. The physical construction of each prototype tower will integrate the materials and methods of aluminum stage scaffolding with the conventional components of computer server racks and cabinets.

To w e r A s s e m b l y One tower is essentially an outdoor server cabinet that is sturdy enough to serve as scaffolding for the LED Video Wall. The prototype tower consists of a 4-post powder-coated aluminum frame, server rack shelving and accessories, aluminum adjustable base scaffolding with casters, architectural scrim and meshes for enclosure, two enclosure fans (one intake and one exhaust), and on-site power cabling.

Intelligence Plan The sensing components are located within towers which demarcate a baseline 10m x 10m field. These have the capacity to speak wirelessly to the Sensor Communicator and relay their data to a central rack/hub.

Open Sound Control (OSC) is the “bridge” that transfers on-site data to an off-site “brain” as well as to other software utilizing OSC protocol, take the 3D engine Unity as an example. MUSe will eventually have a web presence and foster interaction online with publics via social media and intelligent mobile devices.
