May – August 2016
welcome Unusually, I am highlighting some of the events and news from this season in the belief that they say something more about how we are. You may know that we have offered a home to Matthew Bourne’s company New Adventures and Re:Bourne. The company is already planning to run some of its new choreographer programme here, building on its dementia dance work and will be presenting some of its middle scale productions in the new year. We are organising our first Bike festival as an event that might appeal to everyone and, in the autumn, we are hosting the European Mah Jong championships. In this season the first year acting and performance degree students will be showcasing their work and six of the theatre companies we support will be premiering new work. All of this work, along with the 40 elders and their carers who attend the singing for the brain choir on a Monday afternoon and the thriving craft workshop programme go some way to meet an ambition to create an organisation that is local and world class. One that is capable of hosting international artists and visitors whilst caring for every child who shows an interest in our work and every adult who values the opportunity these buildings offer to connect and learn. The Maltings is, without doubt, a precious and complex organisation. One that has always strived to be a shared public space for the town so that we all can play, imagine, think, meet. We value hugely the encouragement and support that the town offers in ensuring we thrive. Gavin Stride Director

an event and exhibition to mark the first two minute silence, May 1916
SUMMER PROGRAMME
time to remember
Castle Street was home to the world’s first two minute silence in May 1916. At an event organised by local farmers to raise funds for the British Red Cross during the First World War the crowd stood in silence, reflected and remembered. One of the organisers said ‘This is spring time, and it is our national way of speaking of hope’. We are continuing these sentiments of remembrance and renewal a century later with procession, music and May Day celebrations. Sunday 1 May 2016 10.30am: A procession along Castle Street 10.50am: A short ceremony, a specially-commissioned performance by The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment Band and local musicians, followed by a two minute silence 11.10am: Follow the band and process to Gostrey Meadow 11.20am–4pm: May Day fair on Gostrey Meadow featuring steam fairground rides, exhibitions, more music and a May pole. Light refreshments will be on sale and we encourage you to bring a picnic.
“This is one of those stories you stumble across which stops you in your tracks and asks you to reflect on the specialness of the place we live. It’s a story of Farnham as a progressive, compassionate community. It is a gift to be working with organisations and individuals from across the town to mark the centenary as a moment of remembrance and renewal.” Gavin Stride, Artistic Director of time to remember & Director of Farnham Maltings
