Ocean has more than 60 years of experience in producing protective workwear. It all began as a response to commercial fishermen’s cry for effective rainwear that could keep them warm and dry in harsh weather conditions. The clothes were created with the utmost of respect for the users and their profession.

NEW: Ocean is now ready to launch sustainable rainwear produced from fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles.

This is recycling that makes a real difference to the environment. We are pleased to contribute to a better environment through sustainable solutions – and to be able to offer customers a greener choice whilst maintaining quality.

The new models will be labelled “Pure Ocean” and launched within the existing product categories that they fit in to.

We will continuously develop and update the range of products manufactured by recycled materials. They will always be easily recognisable from the “Pure Ocean” label.

STANDARDS AND CLASSIFICATIONS WATER DENSITY AND BREATHABILITY

HIGH VISIBILITY

Our products are made of either polyester/cotton/PVC, polyester/PU or a 3-layer fabric with membrane between them. The three different fabrics have different qualities, depending on use.

All safety wear from Ocean is EN ISO 20471 or EN 471 approved.

No textile is 100% waterproof. Water will penetrate the fabric as the water pressure increases.

This is true for all textiles. In practice a product that is able to resist a water column of 15.00020.000 mm feels waterproof, as we only exceed this column in extreme situations.

Cotton/polyester/PVC, which we use, resists a water column of 15.000-20.000 mm.

Because polyester/PU is a little thinner and stretchable it feels more comfortable to wear. We use a fabric resisting water column of 8.000 mm. When using this fabric it is possible for water to penetrate if you sit on a wet bike saddle or a wet seat of a tractor. This also applies if sailing in rough seas.

This is also relevant for 3-layer products with membrane like for instance Medusa, or polyester coated with PU-membrane. The dilemma for the customer is deciding, on the one hand, how much water column a product should be able to resist and, on the other, the comfort and the breathability.

Therefore, when choosing a product, it is crucial to consider for which purpose the product is needed.

Breathability is measured in mvp = moisture vapour perspiration. MVP tells you how much moisture can vaporise through the fabric per m2 per 24 hours. The higher the number, the higher the comfort.

EN ISO 20471 and EN 471 are common European Hi-Visibility standards.

This governs the specification of all certified work wear and rainwear, which is used in working environments, for example areas with traffic where it is important to be seen.

Below we have tried to describe the most important guidelines, which should be the foundation of your choice of safety rainwear.

The standards have certain criteria to meet for employees working within hazardous/heavy traffic areas, most commonly in roadworks, railways and building and construction sites. Even if this work is only a small part of the working day, safety wear must be worn

CLASSIFICATIONS EN ISO 20471 and EN 471 standards are divided into 3 classifications. The classification describes how well the product is able to protect the user.

The bigger the area of fluorescent fabric and reflective stripes, the higher the classification will be.

Class 3:

Should be worn by all working by the road, on railway lines and rescue workers, and also whilst working on and around buildings sites with machine traffic.

As a rule, a set of work clothes fulfils the demands for class 3, when it’s worn together. A set of work clothes should be understood as a combination between a jacket and trousers/overall. Coveralls and certain jackets are also classified as Class 3.

Class 2:

Ocean’s products are quality and safety tested – and do not enter production before they have been approved. The tests are carried out by a recognised and independent Finnish testing institute.

Supervisors, who only check the work, should use class 2 wear. Class 2 wear is typically a high-vis waistcoat, a pair of overalls or a jacket.

Class 1 Is typically trousers, which as the only safety wear must be worn by

visitors. Although a high-vis waistcoat class 2 would be preferred with this (see below). Please be aware that workers in the area should always accompany visitors.

If your work changes through the day, or if you are in doubt, class 3 clothes are recommended.

SUMMARISED: Classification is determined by the minimum area of visible material in m2 and is calculated according to the below:

The minimum visible area requirements to achieve a garment classification are not to be reduced or compromised due to the presence of any logos, lettering, labels etc.

Visibility clothing The classification reflects how well the product is able to provide the user with protection.

Class 3 is the highest class that can be achieved.

All reflectors must meet at least Class 2 regarding the reflector’s ability to reflect the light.

Certified cold protection The first number indicates permeability by air (AP) in Classes 1-3, of which 3 is the highest class.

The second number indicates the resistance to water penetration in Classes 1-2, where 2 is the highest class.

Breathable wind and waterproof workwear Describes protection against rain. The first number indicates water resistance, and the second number is breathability of the overall product. The values range from 1-3, where 3 is the highest class.

Protection against voltage work Clothes that protect against thermal hazards from an electric arc. Parts 1-2: Test methods – Method 2: Determination of the material’s and clothing’s arc protection class through the use of forced and controlled arc (box test).

Protection against welding Minimum requirements for protective clothing which is used in welding and similar processes with similar risks. There are two classes, 1 and 2, where Class 2 provides the best protection.

Electrical discharge This standard describes the breakdown of electrostatic charge from the surface of clothing materials.

Protection against flame spread Materials, material combinations and clothing with limited flame spread.

This standard specifies performance requirements for materials, combinations of materials and protective clothing with limited flame spread.

Protection against heat and flame This standard describes outer clothing of flexible fabric, designed to protect the user’s body, except the hands, from heat and/or fire.
