Marriage meets Modernity
My name is Philippa Rivet and I am and always have been fascinated by weddings. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamt of the day I would be the one wearing the beautiful white dress. I’m unsure of where this obsession has come from as I have only recently attended my first wedding. Following up on my fixation with this life-changing event, I have explored how, as society changes, so does the way people choose to create this memorable and magical event. Everyone knows what a traditional wedding consists of: church ceremony, white dress, traditional vows, fruit cake, ‘Been there, done that, got the tshirt’. Marriage used to be primarily about starting a family. Everything used to happen in a particular sequence; engagement, wedding, children. Nowadays, the wedding day is more of a celebration of the couple unified. Modern day weddings require modern day thinking. Marriage is a very old tradition but in today’s world couples have a lot of freedom when it comes to planning their big day. ‘It’s very true, they are more of a celebration these days especially with a lot of people opting for

the civil ceremony instead of a traditional church service’ says Danni Ford, wedding manager at Kirkley Hall in Northumberland. Whilst a lot of couples still stick to the traditional route, unusual and bespoke weddings are becoming more and more popular. There are various ways a bride and groom can personalise their magic day and all that surrounds it. From the moment you send out the invitations to the moment you leave on your honeymoon, the possibilities are endless. Here, I talk to two brides who have both managed to create days which reflect and portray the values they believe in as a couple.

Roberston,
Emily Roberston, executive fashion and beauty editor at RED magazine, was the person who made me realise how weddings have become a celebration rather than a religious event. She married her university sweetheart in her parent’s garden, a field in Gloucestershire. ‘My parents were so excited when I asked them; they supported me throughout the whole engagement’. Despite not attending the wedding, the many descriptive conversations I was involved in and the fun filled video released after the big day made me feel like I had. Both the bride and groom are country loving people and their wedding totally reflected this. The ceremony, headed by a female vicar, took place in a small church which held sentimental value to the couple. The groom wore a traditional Scottish kilt while the bide wore a beautiful white chiffon dress, tailormade by one of the designer’s at Anya Hindmarch. The young bridesmaid’s gorgeous little white gowns were customised with converse and star wands made of grass. The guests were transported from the church to the reception venue by tractor whilst the bridal party hopped into an old-fashioned VW camper van. ‘My initial vision was for me and Mike to arrive on a vintage tandem, but I kept losing my bids on eBay. The personalised VW van was a perfect alternative, I wanted to keep it’. Upon arrival, the guests were astounded by the sight of a huge circus tent and bright red double decker bus and were welcomed with old-fashioned lemonade bottles served with stripy straws. Uncertain of what to expect, people started to explore the carefully thought out venue. The circus tent was home to a 60’s checkered dance floor and party lights, all prepared for the evening disco. The bespoke London bus was decorated with photos of the happy couple and was used as a giant costume box full of funky hats, glasses and wigs. ‘The funniest photos were taken in the bus; I’m so glad Mike thought of it.’ The marquee which was the venue for the meal portrayed a more sophisticated look. Personalised bunting, fleece blankets in a wicker basket labelled ‘in case you are chilly’ and paper cones filled with popcorn (sweet or salted depending on your preference) all perfectly complemented the vintage feel. Throughout the day, Daisy, the videographer, selected friends and family to mime and dance to particular lyrics of the songs ‘Ain’t no mountain high enough’. This resulted in a hugely amusing and brilliantly edited video encapsulating the whole in day in just 7 minutes. Despite following the traditional theme, Emily and Michael’s day was very much personalised.

Osullivan’
Jacky and Paul Osullivan’s wedding was most certainly unconventional. They got married at Rhaedr Nantcol Waterfalls, Gwynedd in North Wales. As keen bikers, they spent weekends riding round various sites on their motorbikes looking for the perfect spot - the kind you only know when you find it. After speaking to the farmer who owned it, their minds were made up – ‘this was it, it was beautiful, peaceful and perfect for our ceremony’. Like a lot of couples today, they got officially married at a registry office as their waterfall wedding wasn’t legal. This was done very informally, ‘we wore t-shirts and jeans and we did not do rings or flowers, just 2 witnesses and a piece of paper’. The celebrations were spread over the whole weekend. They travelled to Wales on the Friday with a group of friends and camped by the waterfall. Jacky described the camp as ‘relaxed and happy, nobody felt under any pressure’. Paul wanted weddings tattoos and they got them done together just before the wedding. It was Jacky’s first (of many) and represents the oldest Celtic symbol known, one which represents birth, death and eternity. Presents were something they did not want, something friends accepted more easily than family. A friend drove them round all weekend in their van and then filled it with white balloons after the ceremony. They got married in April, luckily for them the sun shone on their big day, so much so that people got sunburned! The bride and groom wore gowns Paul’s mother made out of cheese cloth coupled with simple sandals. Jacky embroidered their wedding tattoo symbol on both the outfits making them extra special. Simple clothing avoided any distraction from the most important part of the day; the ceremony and their commitment to each other. All traditions were broken: no flowers, no bridesmaids or page boys, no traditional outfits, no speeches (although the bride’s father insisted on saying a few words at the meal) and no invitations. This represents who they were and are about. They tried to keep the family out of the planning process as the day might have not been what they wanted had they got involved. When I asked the bride what her best memory of the day was she answered ‘It is hard to say one thing. Being incredibly happy, smiling and laughing so much my jaw ached, feeling so loved and in love, exactly what it should be: the happiest day of my life!’ For Paul however, the vows were what the day was about and what he remembers most. There was no formal reception as such after the ceremony. The couple had a meal with the family before leaving them behind to enjoy a party in the woods consisting of jugglers, fireworks and a fantastic sunrise. A film was made but the couple never asked for a copy, a friend put together a wedding album instead, something they still look through today. People still talk about their wedding nearly 9 years on and Jacky’s mum still says it was the most beautiful wedding she has ever attended. ‘Our day was even better than we had envisioned’ Jacky says.

My reason behind wanting to be a wedding planner is simple: I will only get married once but I have too many ideas I want to explore. As seen with Emily and Jacky’s weddings, anything goes when you put your heart into it. As mentioned earlier, I am a self-proclaimed wedding addict. Despite not having a book filled with dreams and aspirations for my wedding day, I do think about what my big day will be like. I imagine what kind of dress I will wear, who I will have on my bridal party and whether I want a ceremony on a secluded beach or in forest lit by fairy-lights. It is the one day in my life that I can create once; everything will have to be perfect. Despite my own fairy tale wedding being ‘far far away’, there are love stories all over the world which come true every single day. Whilst I wait for my prince charming to go down on one knee, I am here to guide all those who have found their one and only. I wish you all a very happy

Despite the recession, people are still very happy to spend a great deal of money on one day of celebrations. According to hitched-wife.org, a wedding in the UK costs on average £36, 1271! The venue, transport, insurance, bridal wear, hair and makeup, cake, flowers, stationary and finally the honeymoon don’t even consist of half of the cost. An astonishing 50% of the final budget is said to be spent on the guests. 96 is said to be the (average) number of guests invited to a couple’s big day. Realistically is this large number of people really necessary? Will you have the time (and patience) to talk to every single one of these individuals? Spending this extortionate amount of money on a big traditional weddings isn’t necessary. Couples may prefer to spend their savings on a holiday or a deposit for a house. There is no need to pay £300 for your cake if your mother is the best baker you know or hire a band if your best friend is the next big thing? It is possible to have all the trimmings for you first class big day without paying premium. There are so many options on the market and no need to follow traditions, all you need is a little imagination to create a unique day that you, your fiancée and all your guests will remember forever. People might find getting married in the modern day ‘unaffordable’ but what you need to remember is that it isn’t about showing off, it is about celebrating your love for one and other.

Josie (born Painter) and Tom Larder are the perfect example of how love can be found at any age. At the young age of 21, the pair married in Derby where they meet a univeristy Today the beautiful newly wed tells us about her magical day and how she worked with a tight budget.
FIRST MET- At University and church. He was the year above me and won me over with his fun, mischievous ways and guitar playing! THE PROPOSAL- We had spoken about getting married but I kept cheekily guessing that he was going to propose every time he suggested doing something romantic! So I got told to stop guessing and put it out of my mind (as much as I could!) One lazy Sunday, when I was least expecting it, he took me out for the day, but when we got home I opened the front door of my house to a trail of roses and candles leading outside where he had made a fire, surrounded by candles and fairy lights, with wine and malteasers (my favourite chocolate!) scattered everywhere. The floor was covered in blankets and pillows and he dropped to his THE DRESS- Bright white, fitknee as music was playing and asked me ted with a sweetheart neck (sorry I to be his wife! (I couldn't say yes for ages couldn't remember the designer!) as I was laughing and crying too much!) BRIDESMAIDS- 3 of my uni friends who I was living with, my best friend from home who I grew up with and my beautiful sister HE WORE- Light-grey mid length suit, with turquoise cravats, cream handkerchief and peach buttonholes to match the bridesmaids. I also bought him some batman converses for the evening reception. 14
THE CEREMONY- Ceremony took place in our church; it’s a really big building so we were able to fit all our guests in! Tom’s sisters sang during the signing of the register, and we asked his dad to give the sermon which was really personal. Tears were held back quite well until my sister stood and read a poem. She was crying before she even started to read but was determined to read it despite tears rolling down her cheeks! That was a really special moment as we are very close. RECEPTION- We had the reception in the same place as the church with a quick turn over of seating! Our theme was shabby chic and we decorated the tables with lots of flowers, bark, and lace. For music we had an 8 piece jazz band which definitely got everyone up and dancing! Even my grandma threw a few shapes on the dance floor! SPECIAL TOUCHES- We wanted our wedding to be very personal and have any many of our loved ones involved as we could. Whilst our photos were being taken, we had two of our close friends playing an acoustic set whilst guests enjoyed home made cakes baked by our friends and family. HONEYMOON- We spent a week in Tunisia which was so lovely to just spend a week in the sunshine to relax and enjoy being newly-weds! PHOTOGRAPHY- Bonbon photography. Our friends from church were just started their own photography business.. They made us feel so relaxed and got some great natural shots, and really captured people’s personalities’. Would definitely recommend them! THE BEST BITS- Walking down the aisle with my dad and the moment he put my hand into Toms. Felt like a really significant moment. Saying the vows was pretty overwhelming but incredible too! Also dancing late into the night with all my close family and friends!

Adele’s ‘Make you feel my love’ my aim is to make everyone cry before I even get to the top of it. We walked out of the ceremony to Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’. What does your dress look like? It’s relatively simple,strapless and made of lace. I have a rounded train at the back. I have bought a different dress for the evening. Who else will be walking down the aisle? My 3 bridemaids, 2 friends and my 9 year old niece. They will be wearing beautiful deep purple dresses and Macy will wear a white dress with a fur shrug. What will be your first Dance? Black Eye Peas ‘I’ve got a feeling’. We are both terrible dancers so we didn’ t think a classic song would be appropriate. What personal touches have you added to your big day? Wedding Checkist
Immediately: * Work out your budget. * Open a bank account specifically for your wedding and put a certain

amount of savings into this account every month. Decide on what sort of ceremony you want (in a church, courthouse, home, etc...). * Book the officiant and church, if applicable. Start looking at reception venues. Availability may determine your wedding date.Book your venue as soon as possible.
12 months to go * Book your photographer and / or videographer. * Consult with different caterers (if different suppliers to the venue). * Book the civil ceremony venue and Registrar now, if applicable.
10 months to go * Book your caterers. * Confirm honeymoon arrangements and organise your travel insurance. * Visit wedding gown boutiques and start trying on a range of styles.
9 months to go * Decide on a colour theme for your wedding (this may depend on the dress you choose).
* Order your dress.
* Book the entertainment (band or DJ) for your wedding reception. * Book or arrange your wedding transport.

6 months to go * Start to think about the sorts of wedding gifts you want and need and look *
around for places at which to have your registry. Consult with and book the florist that will be responsible for your bouquets as well as the flowers at the ceremony and reception. * Decide upon and organise the dresses and suits for the bridal party.
5 months to go * Try on and purchase your underwear for the wedding and the wedding *
night. Consult with cake makers and decide on a design and a supplier. * Confirm the menu with your caterers. * Finalise your guest list.
4 months to go * Decide on the music to which you want to walk down the aisle, exit the ceremony venue and arrive at the wedding reception. Also decide on hymns and provide the marriage official with these. * Choose readings or poems for the ceremony and confirm these with the marriage official. * Print your wedding invitations. * Decide on your veil, tiara or fascinator. * Decide on what vaccinations and medications you will need for your honeymoon and begin plans to start these as some are required some time before the event.Book guest accommodation, if necessary. * Organise your fiancÊ’s suit if he has not already.

3 months to go * Print the programmes and menus. * Send out the invitations.
* Ensure that your passports are still valid if you are honeymooning abroad.

Keep in mind that you will need to change your passport to your married surname if you want to travel as Mrs ... * Book your make-up artist, hair dresser and beautician. * Hire crockery and cutlery, if necessary. * Organise your table plan. Decide on a hairstyle and experiment with colours now, if you are planning to dye your hair for the big day. * Buy your wedding favours.
2 months to go * Write your vows and confirm with your wedding official that they are appropriate.
* Write or print the place cards.
* Choose your wedding rings and plan to have them made or customised.
1 month to go: * Have a make-up and hair trial. Take photographs and include any accesso ries you want for the day (clips, veil, etc...) so that you have a good idea of the final effect. * Collect the wedding rings. * Write your speech. * Book your final dress fitting. * Ensure that you have bought gratitude gifts for your bridal party. * Call all suppliers to confirm dates.

2 weeks to go * Confirm the final guest numbers and let the caterers know. * Trim and colour your hair one last time before the wedding. * Organise your rehearsal for the ceremony.
* Get any foreign currency that you may need for your honeymoon.
* Buy the refreshments, if you are responsible for arranging this yourself.
* This is around the time that Hen Parties and Stag Parties should be organised and held.
1 week to go * Visit the beautician for your eyebrow, bikini, upper lip and leg waxes so that you do not have any redness or rashes on the day.
2 days to go: * Pack your bags for your honeymoon.
The day before * Wash your hair and use a light conditioner on it.
* Focus on relaxing and pampering yourself. Take long baths and make sure that you feel as relaxed as possible.
On the day * Organise for someone to pick your flowers up from the florist and deliver them to the ceremony and reception venues, as well as to get your bouquets to you.
