Wandering and

Eyes

Wishful

Minds...

Dream of a world that’s all your own...

In today’s society airports have become second nature and passports are one of the most common forms of identification. Travelling is a privilege most of us take for granted. However, in spite of this there is nothing worse than being delayed at the airport. Having to wait around in an unfamiliar place when all you want to do is reach your highly anticipated and desired destination is very tedious. So whilst trying to pass the time why not grab a latte and people watch. Creating your own personal life story for that person who, for some reason, might just have caught your wandering eye. By looking at them and assessing what they are wearing and how they behave you begin to create your own perception of that person. Subconsciously you start to believe you know them and create a relationship with them. Nevertheless you are dumbfounded when they shoot off to their gate and you realise you don’t know where they are travelling. Sometimes you can guess, but I find that most people have a way of surprising you. There can be a considerably scattered line between people watching and daydreaming. Observing the way a person moves, what they wear, how they speak and their behaviour is what will attract your inviting wandering eyes to those who you pick out of that crowd. Creating in your own mind where they come from, where they are travelling, and how they fit into your own little world. What characters will you create? When at the airport recently I found myself intrigued and encapsulated by a few certain characters in front of me. Imagine yourself in a buzzing and fast environment with a frenzy of activity around you. There are people shopping whilst you are sitting drinking a Starbucks; behind you there is an older woman chatting to her daughter about her incompetence with the new mobile phone she has bought; a group of young French students chatting away in their native language as they try to decipher the menu and a man and his wife in the purple velvet seats next to you explaining how excited they are about visiting their son who is at university in Edinburgh. Close your mind, immerse yourself the sounds and smells around you. Let you mind run free.

Opposites attract Two ladies travelling together caught my eye with their singular but equally distinct looks. I noticed a petite lady with a noticeable Anna Wintour style blonde bob, accompanying the carefully placed Dior sunglasses on her head and who was dressed all in black. Carrying a large Mulberry Traveller, her hands were gripped onto a large selection of magazines whilst her eyes were wandering from one designer store window to the next. Tottering around in her matching Jimmy Choo court shoes she was in full conversion with her travelling companion. A wild-haired brunette, towering over her friend, was dressed in a eccentric multi-coloured clashing outfit. Her rucksack looked as though it was bursting at the seams with books! I adopt the idea that this would have been bought from a previous trip, possibly Africa, due to the aboriginal/tribal style print. This creates the image of a woman who indulges in culture and likes to journey to an exotic country. Conflicting styles and tastes really accentuate their personal styles and, weirdly, they do nothing but complement each other. Where were they jetting off to is what I wanted to know?

You get ideas from daydreaming. You get ideas from being bored. You get ideas all the time. The only difference between writers and other people is we notice when we're doing it. Neil Gaiman Family of Five Rallying the troops, this mother impressed me at how calmly she could control her overly excited kids as well as her husband. How does she do it? Ushering her family around a busy airport with the many bags they had in tow. The mother was dressed in what looked like her comfortable jeans, classic t-shirt and simple jersey blazer. The husband and kids are also dressed casually, however the mother distinctively looked more put together. They had a lot of luggage; toys were spilling out of the kids rucksacks and the baby’s pram. I imagine they had a long haul flight with the mother having many tricks and treats up her sleeve to keep the family entertained. This would ensure a peaceful trip where everyone was comfortable and occupied. Where were this family impatiently flying off to?

I love watching people, and that is what I do; just go for a walk at about 4 o’clock, and go down a busy street, where you see people coming out of school and you get a glimpse of their lives, what they’re talking about. Andrea Corr

A Perfect Pair A young couple, evidently newly married, beaming smiles and exuding happiness, oblivious to everyone around them were about to depart on their honeymoon. They leisurely sauntered hand in hand round the airport. Appearing blissful and relaxed, her glowing smile and long flowing hair complemented her casual dress and her partners attire. Her cobalt blue Hermes Birkin matching his striped Ralph Lauren shirt. What kind of destination are they treating themselves to?

I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time. A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh Designer Head to Toe From a traditional Burberry mac to his Gucci loafers, this pristinely dressed man looked casual but collected. Accompanying his ensemble with a Louis Vuitton traveller bag there is no doubt this man knew he looked. His style reflected the bold personality he portrayed whilst stalking the airport shops. Paris or Milan was my initial thought?

Don't underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can't hear, and not bothering. A.A. Milne Man on a Mission A handsome powerful looking businessman strides through the terminal past all the stores and straight to Starbucks. Wearing a suit tailored by the finest on Saville Row this impeccably dressed man was travelling alone. He seemed calm, focussed and in control. With just a small holdall I can only assume that he was travelling on a short business trip. Where is that handsome man travelling to on his own my mind wondered?

I just want to go through Central Park and watch folks passing by. Spend the whole day watching people. I miss that. Barack Obama

From the characters surrounding you, you can let your imagination run wild. In your head you can assume and guess what kind of people they are and how they act. You can create a character from the vision you have in your head and start to think about that character and how they would fit into your imagination. Day-dreaming is having amusing or fantasies whilst you’re awake, fulfilling wishes or hopes in some cases. In other cases you can realize a story with your mind using the location and people around you. I always find myself taking off to another land and daydreaming of another place. A place where the characters that around me exist. Taking the people who have captured your wandering eye and encapsulating them into a world of my own. When sitting in an airport you can find that things can become boring and uninteresting very quickly. There is only so much to do and the standard two-hour wait before your flight is called can become quite unsettling. The only thing around you is people, so what is left to do but people watch. If you have a creative mind like mine that often takes you away to a different world you will often find that airports are a predominant place where this will occur. Finding yourself slipping into a dream, however that dream just so happens to have an uncanny comparison with the place you are in. The people around you, the smells, the sounds and the tastes are all captured. The use of your senses creates a very real and vivid experience. The aroma of coffee permeating from the cafes, the Chanel No.5 that the mature lady behind you is wearing, the taste and touch of the blueberry muffin you are indulging in, the sound of chattering people and the atmosphere around you. All this will change the story and imagery that is capturing your mind. It is amazing how just that one look and that one judgement of a passing person can create an intense and vibrant story that has more resemblance to you than any other. Creating characters from real life people and their behaviour. Let your daydreams take over your world for just a few minutes an experience the reality of your imagination before someone brings you back to where you are.

What’s in the Bag? How to deal with the luggage dilemma‌ Just what on earth do you pack?

You always see celebrities with an excess of 14 pieces of large luggage being dragged around the airport on a service trolley. Then they just casually stroll behind with their designer handbag that looks as light as a feather. What on earth could they possibly have to pack in those 14 bags? Is there any need for all that luggage? The curiosity of what people pack in their bags is always interesting. When you are sitting in the terminal and you notice the woman with the half open mulberry traveller with the half open book traipsing on the side of the bag. There is a lot of curiosity of what magazines people buy, what books they read, and what else they have in their hand luggage. Frequent traveller, fashionista and airhostess to the first class, Megan Pearson lets us snoop around her hand luggage and find out what her travel essentials and necessities are.

What are your airport/travel necessities? I would say my main necessities are beauty products, a book, a magazine, notepad and pen, iPad or iPod and jumper.

Why do you have these? I always carry beauty products to freshen myself up when on a long haul flight. A jumper or cardigan is an essential of mine if you are flying over night, as it can get quite cold with the planes air con. I’ve just got an iPad

What is your favourite bag to travel with? Usually I travel with my brown leather and suede Tommy Hilfiger bag. Its big enough and spacious enough to carry everything I need without being a hindrance to carry. A long shoulder strap can be a saviour sometimes.

What would you suggest people shouldn’t travel without? I would say a jumper especially if you are on a long haul flight. However any kind of beauty products are always a plus. On a long flight its nice to freshen up before you land. Also if you get delayed or stranded at an airport it is good to have a selection of products to tidy yourself up with.

Do you travel with any other spare clothing in your hand luggage? In addition to a jumper I carry a spare plain white tee.

What inflight beauty essentials do you travel with? Touché Éclat is a must for me, but I also make sure that make-up wise I have mascara and blusher. As well as make up I regularly carry perfume and moisturiser.

Do you carry any treats in your bag? I always make sure I have mints or chewing gum, but a few sweet goodies can usually be found in my bag. A few favourites of mine are butter mintos and fruit pastels.

Do you prefer to read magazines or books when at the airport? When waiting around in the airport I much prefer to read magazines, however when on the plain I like to read a book, I know have a selection on my iPad.

Do you carry any electronics with you? As well as my iPad and phone I will possibly carry a camera depending on whether I have just hand luggage.

What one item can you never travel without? My notepad! I always take a notepad everywhere with me. I don’t keep a journal or diary as such, but I always make notes and sketch things I see, whether it is buildings, objects or people. I think it’s really nice to keep drawings and words from places to remind you of your memories.
