Women's march events and protests took place towards the end of January 2017, in cities all over the world. The main protest took place in Washington D.C on the 21st January 2017. The protests were mainly aimed towards Donald Trump, and took place a day after his inauguration, Sanghani, R. (2017). To help make a statement at the march, Krista Suh and Jayna Zweiman came up with the idea of everyone knitting their own pink hats with cat ears, later known as the ‘Pussy Hat’. They described their statement as being “a sea of pink”, Reimel, E. (2017). Through the use of the Pussy hat, it has definitely made pink a symbolic colour of feminism which is a reason it has became a popular colour this S/S and A/W. It’s also clear from my research that the main target audience for the Pussy hat and feminist fashion in general is women of all ages, races and classes which is clearly being demonstrated in today’s media.

As A/W 17 fashion weeks draw to a close, it's clear to see the feminist fashion trend in a lot of different collections. A brand that showed this trend in their collection was Missoni, with it being obvious to see from the collection that they have taken massive inspiration from Suh and Zweiman’s Pussy Hat, showing that this trend has trickled up from the streets. As seen in figure 13 everyone attending the show was given a Missoni Pussy Hat, Mccall (2017). Missoni can also be seen using their social media, mainly Instagram as seen in figure 39 to further get across their feminist message with their version of the Pussy hat.

statement slogans

A more obvious feminism led trend is statement, slogan garments. This is a simple yet powerful way of brands showing their solidarity with women. Dior seemingly started this trend in it’s S/S 17 collection with the ‘We should all be feminists’

Figure 25

tshirt shown in figure 25, with a portion of all sales going to Figure 27

Rihanna’s charity the Clara Lionel Foundation. Brands such as Prabal Gurung and Ashish followed a season later as shown in figure 26 and 27, Brannigan, M. (2017). Another way of using media to portray this trend is magazine, with Harpers Bazaars featuring a cover with Jennifer Lawrence wearing ‘the’ Dior t-shirt and Teen Vogue adopting an overall more political stance on their magazine as a brand. the highstreet The next move for feminist fashion is definitely for it to trickle back down from luxury fashion to the highstreet. This is already something that has clearly started to happen already with brands like Monki, ASOS, Topshop and River Island adopting the slogan tshirts into their latest clothing drops. This shows that the trend of feminism in fashion has almost done a full circle, with it starting on the streets and eventually moving to the highstreet. Etsy also readily sells a lot of feminist inspired hand designed pins and patches for very reasonable prices. It's becoming clear that brands are recognising that people, mainly women are interested in feminism, as well as wanting to wear nice clothes. People want equality for all and want their favourite brands to recognise that it's a good thing to use your voice, in the form of clothing, when you have such a large platform.
