Athleisure is clothing worn for active exercise or for comfortability. Retail stores like H&M through to Stella McCartney’s sportswear range sell athleisure. This trend emerged in the 80s from music influences and the birth of jersey, but in today’s world it’s everyday fashion. Designers have developed athleisure trends by creating garments which are seen as more fashionable, especially for the younger generation due to social media advertisement and online shopping. Streetwear had a massive influence on today’s athleisure, this shows the bubble up within athleisure to shape todays trend.

Fig 22 The 80s seen the birth of athleisure as this era was influenced by music, very bright colours and the beginning of jersey creating the big oversized jumpers and the start of urban streetwear. Subcultures influenced athleisure with brands such as kappa, in the 90s which would have clothes styled with a tartan baseball cap for the teenage males. As decades progressed ‘Lad’ culture of chav formed with baggy tracksuit bottoms and jumpers, which was worn for everyday use. This fashion would be seen mainly in the football fans and groups of rebellious teenagers. Modern day athleisure has a more active feel to it with the clothes being more gym appropriate.

Adidas is a very famous brand for athleisure wear with their clothing, shoes, and a worldwide recognisable logo. Adidas’s target audience is teenagers, as they want their style to be fashionable and are more likely to go the gym. Adidas is affordable but when designers collaborate, garments become more expensive such as the Stella McCartney Adidas range. Her brand is very intriguing as she shows variation as well as being fashionable and wanting women to work out, as Stella (Stella McCartney, 2017) states herself ‘Sports performance was an ill dressed subject…colours were very basic’.

Nike Sacai is a fascinating type of sportswear design, as you wouldn’t usually see people wearing it, which in my opinion makes it very captivating and interesting. From these garments and as Nike (Nike,2017) states ‘emerging technologies and new science’ has created these abstract designs. I’ve been intrigued by these Sacai designs and it’s influenced me to create my own athleisure look. Nike is a brand mainly aimed at the younger generation with the emerging new designs and technology and the fashionable garments. Nike is seen in everyday styles just as a comfort or as active clothing.
