HELLO! ... FROM CYNDI

The very first memories that come to mind of my existence on earth all include my mom--the younger I was, the fewer the memories, but mom has always been there. I’m not sure if it’s because of old photos worn by time, or because of stories retold, but I can envision specific events taking place in my life as a little girl about the age of four, and every memory flooding my memory bank, has a picture of mom in it. I know that the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and truly, the flowers that bloom this month are beauties, indeed (more often in every other state besides California); but for me, this month is all about moms. Maybe like me, your mom has always been there, through the good, the bad and thoose ugly, snotful, tearful momentsthat leave you with the worst of headaches; or maybe, through the best of times, looking down on you, beaming from cheek to cheek with the “look” only she can give, because of something you did (or didn’t) do. If your mom was anything like mine, she did a lot of both, and then some. This month, Fashioned salutes our mamas, for being the strong, brave, courageous, fierce, sacrificial, loving moms they are. While we (our team) represent only a small fraction of all the thankful daughters who’ve relied on you for just about everything, we couldn’t let this month go by without giving it up for the women who have helped shape us to become who we are. For this reason we were ecstatic to highlight a hip, young mom who is as bold and courageous, as she is beautiful--our very own Janae Klatt! A few issues back, Janae shared on being a “leaper,” (not to be confused with a leper). Being real with our readers, Janae’s honesty was so beautifully shared as she talked about her fears in uprooting the lives of her life, with her family (hubby and two girls) from Flagstaff, to Los Angeles. in pursuit of her dreams--one, of which is to pursue her acting career. You’ll want to read more on that in her interview with us in this month’s issue. With so much going on in our world, communities and personal lives, we had many things to share with you this month, however, in light of giving honor to where honor is due, this month’s issue heralds moms and why we love them! Now don’t get me wrong, we made time to cover accessories and the accents they bring, so be sure to browse through our lookbook (Not Too Shady), as we crafted different ways to spruce up your fave staple pieces! I realize that for some, May can be a little difficult due to maybe losing your mom, or maybe the relationship with your mom was estranged because of unfortunate circumstances. Maybe some pretty major “stuff” happened between you and your mom and you find it hard to forgive or to say you’re sorry. My heart for you is that somewhere in this month, any wounds or painful memories would begin to heal your heart and mind, so that this month can become a month of beauty, blooming and new precious moments shared with friends, an adopted mom, mentor, or loved ones.

There are many things I enjoy about the month of May, but of the many things this month brings, none bring as much joy than to celebrate moms, bringing them honor to thank them for all they have done, so moms, THANK YOU ... for EVERYTHING. We wouldn’t be who we are without you, and we want you to know we are fully aware of your many sleepless nights, heartache and tears we may have caused (some of us more than others). I hope that as you read, you are encouraged and reminded that you are amazing, so lift up your heads and walk in it! Until next month, cheers to you and your beautiful mamas! With much love, Cyndi

MAMA SAID THERE’D BE DAYS LIKE THESE... AS TOLD TO CYNDI GALLEY BY JANAE KLATT

Rarely do you come across a young mom who makes being a wife and mother-of-two look like a piece of cake, so when you do, you want to sit, listen and learn (or at least I do!). Now, I’m no mom (yet), but I take note of the mamas who do it all--raise their kids the best the can, making time to enjoy life’s delicacies, while trapsing their kids to school, practices, parties...the list goes on and on. Such is Janae Klatt, a hip, young, talented mom who is taking territory in life...she shares with us this month! FM: This month’s issue focuses on moms, daughters, may, flowers, love...any thoughts on any of those? JK: All of those things make my heart happy, and they all go so well together. Moms and daughters, flowers and love, in the beautiful month of May! FM: You’re creative and talented -- an actress, a writer, speaker, minister and more...you have a desire to write screenplays--is there anything else I’ve forgotten? JK: Oh man...(she gets shy)...hehe...I don’t think so. FM: What drives you to do what you do? (What is it you love about what you do)? JK: What drives me...I think it would be that I receive great joy when I do what I love. When I don’t, life isn’t as grand. And I have always wanted life to be a grand experience, like the finale in a classic musical. Wouldn’t life be that much more amazing, if we

4

could tap dance on desks and sing at that the top of our lungs?! I think so!! FM: What is it you love most about what you do? WHY do you do what you do? JK: I love the opportunity of telling a story and connecting an audience to a message and meaning. If someone can be impacted toward hope by something that I helped to create, then my heart is full. FM: Any words of wisdom to someone all-things-creative trying to survive in a world of systems, structure, where a “struggling artist” is not the norm? JK: I think the greatest bit of “wisdom” I can share, would be to love who you are and find areas where your creativity can shine-that’s why I love fashion. Even when I am involved in a “non-creative” moment, being able to express myself in fashion is freeing. FM: Yes! You’ve penned many spoken words for various conferences and live performances--all powerful and very poetic. What inspires your spoken words? JK: Thank you! Honestly, my inspiration comes from a God who loves me and His creation. 6. What is it that helps you keep your “One True North” with all you’ve got going on?

I have to spend time by myself, in quiet reflection and journaling; allowing my soul to be quiet and still helps keep my heart from going in too many directions. FM: This month, moms are being celebrated all around the world-share a little bit about your mom and what are some of the things you love most about your mom? JK: My mom is one of my best friends! She is an incredible woman. She has such a determination to live life with integrity and passion. She inspires me with love for family and for others. She is genuinely self-less. And she has the best laugh…it’s contagious! FM: You are a mom yourself of two girls...what are their names and how old are they? How old were you when you became a mom? JK: ZoëJane, will be seven in June and MacCallum, is three. I was 25 when ZoëJane was born...wow that seems like a lifetime ago! Being a mom is like an amusement park...kinda like Disneyland--there are moments of pure joy and magic, there are fireworks, laughter and amazing memories that take your breath away. And then the smells, over-crowding, standing for long, long, long periods of time, tantrums over a $25 key-chain assault your ears, and pure exhaustion hits. Yup...Being a mom is like living at Disneyland. I am so honored to be a season pass holder. I love being a mom. FM: You married the love of your life, Justin -- how old were you when you married? JK: I met him when I was 21 years old, and we were married less than a year later, I was 22. He was my first and last boyfriend.

JK: Ahh thanks! Lady Gaga--I own three meat dresses...HA! (she laughs) Just kidding, but on a a more serious note, there is a fashionblogger that I follow, and I love her style. Courtney Kerr. She has a great sense of blending the practical and fantastic, which I love. My fashion has to be practical, but I love a splash of fantastical fancy! FM: Young girls in this generation are being influenced by magazines, media, celebrities and society. You have made the decision to be an influencer, and you are. Who are some of those you have looked up to (female or male) or been influenced by? JK: My mom would be the first female that comes to mind. She has influenced me more than she knows. When I was a teenager, our family hiked the Grand Canyon. We backpacked into the canyon and camped for three days. It was a five+ hour hike in, and about seven + hour hike out (going uphill with a backpack takes longer). I will never forget this moment with my mom. We were hiking out, and we had come to the switchbacks. We were all exhausted, but my mom looked up at the steep rocky cliff, and said...”Janae, I am gonna start and not stop until we reach the top...If I stop, I won’t be able to get going again, so I am gonna push hard and finish strong. You with me?” And we did it. The last hour and half, we didn’t stop. I kept up with my mom and followed behind her, ‘til we reached the top and collapsed, in victory and exhaustion. My mom’s determination, passion and commitment to finish well, will always be some of the greatest influences of my life. FM: Wow. That is powerful...I’m inspired! We live in a world where body-modification is highly emphasized--any words of wisdom or encouragement you can give to someone who isn’t comfortable in their own skin? (Cont. on page 12)

FM: Haha..wow...ten years. What would you say to someone who married young and maybe feels like they have hit a “low” or a “lull” in their marriage? JK: We have all heard, “marriage is hard work”, but no matter how cliché, it’s true. It takes active attention and a daily choice...to choose to love the same person day in and day out. I would encourage any one, at any stage of their marriage, to continue to choose to love, never allow bitterness to take root, and continue to grow as an individual and as a couple. Also, go on dates...all kinds, romantic, spontaneous, fancy or inexpensive...#neverstopdating FM: Throughout the eras and ages, fashion has always been at the forefront. What is your favorite era of fashion? JK: I grew up obsessed with watching Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice (BBC’s version with Colin Firth), and loved the fashion in those films. I am not sure what era that would be, but I love the simple elegance and delicate details that were in every piece of lace or ribbon. It was fashion that honored the female form and reflected femininity.

“...being honest about our insecurities is the one of the greatest OLIVIA COUTURE, ASHLYN PIKE & JENNIFER VARGAS dissolvers of the lie that we should “be perfect”. If we all knew

FM: That’s a personal favorite, as well...top ten for sure, and I couldn’t agree with you more! Speaking of fashion, you have a great sense of style -- who are some of your fashion icons?

how much we all dealt with insecurity, then we wouldn’t compare and judge because we would realize our sister is human, just like us.”

JK: A good pair of Jeans, a classic boyfriend white t-shirt, statement jewelry, and pair of comfortable but sexy heels. Also, a great “red” lipstick! That’s an outfit right there! Let’s hit the town, I am ready! FM: This has been fun, Janae! We’ve so enjoyed having you with us this month! I know you sing, so what are your top three songs that get you singing at the top of your lungs? JK: 1. Drops of Jupiter - Train; 2. Let Your Hair Down- Corinne Bailey Rae and 3. Shut up and Dance - Walk the Moon To that we say, dance and sing away!

(Cont. from page 5) JK: I think being honest about our insecurities is the one of the greatest dissolver of the lie that we should “be perfect”. If we all knew how much we all dealt with insecurity, then we wouldn’t compare and judge because we would realize our sister is human, just like us. So a word of encouragement to my sisters... “You are beautifully flawed and stunningly imperfect-so walk boldly and smile often, because you are truly lovely”. FM: I love that! I also love that you always look fabulous every time I see you -- where are your top three places to shop? JK: Although I love designer fashion, I do not have the budget for the designer price tag, so I love to find amazing deals. I love outlet malls and great sales! My top three stores would be The Gap, Anthropologie (only if there is a killer sale:) and H&M. FM: We are huge fans of all of those places! Favorite pair of jeans and why? JK: I have a pair of Gap, distressed boyfriend jeans that I love. I can dress them up with a delicate top and a pair of heels, or dress down with a pair of cute boots. Either way they rock! FM: Both ways sound FABulous! What are those must-have statements pieces you can’t live without? JK: I have several jewelry pieces (necklace, bangles and earrings) from the online shop, Baublebar.com - their stuff is bold, unique and striking! I love this website! I don’t buy clothes online, being 5’11’’, I have not been super successful, but you can’t go wrong with jewelry! FM: Yes, girl! You got to go with what you know...and I am a huge fan of Baublebar! FM: What are those fashion “must-haves” you just can’t live without?

MOTHER, MAY I...? JUST SAY... no matter which daughter you talk to, most would say that their mom is the best! Well, in this issue, some of fashioned mag’s team members share about their moms and why they love them!

Brittany Treglia: My mom is the definition of selfless! I am constantly amazed that she always puts others before herself. I admire my mom more than anyone. I find that I’m organized like she is, and I love people well like she does, and I think I inherited her great sense of style! I love her heart for her family and God…it’s beautiful. Besides her outward beauty that is obvious, my mom has great legs!!

Hannah Garcia: The thing I love most about my mom is her gentle, yet authoritative spirit. I definitely inherited my mother’s face; we look so alike it’s crazy! I think my mom’s most beautiful feature is her big brown eyes & long lashes! As for her style, I can’t say her style resembles anyone that I know of but I would definitely call it professional and chic!

Cyndi Galley: What I love most about my mom is her strength, faith, wisdom and humility. I admire my mom’s ability to love, even when it hurts--she is the epitome of selflessness. I see alot of my mom in me--both in being silly and loving life! My funnest times dancing have been with her. As for her sense of fashion, she has always been a fashionista, keeping up with every era! She rocked a mean beehive in the 60’s, and was the queen of oversized sunglasses and go-go boots in the 70’s! I love her dim-

Jennifer Vargas: What I love most about my mom is how she is quick to defend the defenseless. I inherited my sense of adventure from her. Most beautiful feature is her smile, because it is radiant and infuses comfort!

(Continued from page 13, Mother May I...?)

Micaela Ricaforte: What I love most about my mom is her compassion and confidence! One of her most beautiful features is her smile, which I think I inherited from her, along with her dimples and really long fingers! One of the things I enjoy doing with my mom is watching The Princess Bride or My Big Fat Greek Wedding. My mom has an extreme sweet tooth. When teased about the (insane) amount of sugar she puts in her coffee, she just says, “It’s what keeps me so sweet!”

Sophia Sanchez: What I love most about my mom is her constant love of people and how much she cares for those who she may not know (well)! Many people say that my mom and I look so much alike—I guess I have inherited a lot from her, but one thing that sticks out are our similar bubbly personalities! I love my mom and would have to say I wouldn’t be able to pick out her best feature because she’s all around gorgeous!

Zowie Murillo: What I love the joy and happiness that my mom always has…and that she is always smiling. I inherited her amazing dance skills and personality! Her most beautiful feature is her smile and curly blonde hair (which in this photo, is actualy not curly at all). ;-)

BLAIR WALDORF’S WORLD OF FASHION

BY BRITTANY TREGLIA

Most Saturdays the local Salvation Army will have a 50% discount on all clothing items. I immediately hit the coat rack and what did I find? A fun, long, Houndstooth coat almost identical to the one Blair would wear strolling the Upper East Side streets of New York. Needless to say, I left that day with a $70 coat for the price of $6. 2. Another favorite outfit of Blair’s was the classic dress with pleats. Most of the dresses would accentuate her waist, then flaring out to her give a feminine look. Blair wore a lot of pastels and flowers. Here is I tend to lean more towards blacks and stripes. Another successful trip to the Goodwill brought me to a simple black and grey dress that was similar to the style Blair wore on multiple escapades chasing Chuck Bass around the city or scheming a plan to take over her school. I was able to snag up this pretty little item for just $10.

I can remember as a kid, sitting and watching multiple movies or different TV shows, longing so desperately to have the same wardrobe as the main character. I wanted to have those cool butterfly clips that Lizzie McGuire had, or even the trendy scarves Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen used to wear. Wal-Mart came out with a Mary-Kate and Ashley line once; And my pre-teen self squealed with excitement when I finally possessed my very one denim purse! Goodness gracious, I’m so glad the 90’s are no longer here.

3. Blair didn’t really ever wear shorts or jeans, and so the last item I found that I absolutely fell in love with, was a simple red dress with a sheer overlay. Blair wore a pale mint dress to a function in one of the episodes. When seeing this dress, I remember thinking, “That could be dressed up or dressed down.” The dress I found (for $5) has the same feel. I wore it to work once with flats and then wore it with heels another time when I had to host an event.

Today, it’s even more possible to obtain the desired wardrobe from the beloved main TV characters, because thrifting…is a thing! Though I’m not stating the show as a personal fave, a character whose fashion I have tended to gravitate towards, is a character named, Blair Waldorf, a scheming, spoiled high-society character. Of the three main female characters, I would say my fashion follows the style of teenage fashioinista, Blair, rather than Serena van der Woodsen (definitely not Vanessa, whose fashion I might liken to the WalMart aisle of the Mary-Kate and Ashley line…girl, dress up!). Anyhow, I’d see pics of Blair’s character, then piecing my own Waldorf-wardrobe, I began adding my own flair and style to it. Come to find out, Blair’s wardrobe was heavily gleaned from a famous, iconic character that many of us have known and loved—Audrey Hepburn. So, I guess in my research of Blair, I found that she too, tried to mimic the beloved and famous character from the screen (or at least the show’s stylist did). So, with the image of a sophisticated Blair Waldorf in mind, I decided to ransack the nearest thrift stores to see what exactly I could find. Here is what my extensive “research” produced”. 1. One of my favorite Saturday morning activities is to go thrifting. I live about 45 minutes from San Diego, and let me tell you thrift stores near the beach are amazing. Quite a few times, I have found EXACTLY what I have been looking for, but at a less expensive price. Once, I was on the quest for a winter coat, I went to the local thrift shop.

Brittany showing off her “Blair Waldorfesque” thrift store dress. Way to go, Britt! #OOTD

Another thing Ms. Waldorf possessed, along with her fashion sense, was some hidden humor in her character. With the snarky sarcastic comments, a favorite of mine in particular would be, “Whoever said money didn’t buy you happiness, didn’t know where to shop.” Although Blair’s idea of shopping is Fifth Avenue in New York, mine is wandering the streets near the beach in and out of Goodwill, Salvation Army or other thrift stores. Truth be told, I really don’t see that much of a difference in our shopping habits, although my sense of fashion doesn’t come close to her style and sophistication; I can

CHANGE OF HEART

confidently say, however, in the fact that out here in SoCal, I still dress a step above the game where fashion is concerned. Thrifting has become one of my favorite things to do. I love browsing through racks and racks of clothes, in search for my latest favorite piece. Now don’t get me wrong, I sure do love the smell of a department store, and nothing quite compares to the smell or feel of brand new pants, but there is something about thrifting that makes me feel satisfied when I leave the store with a treasure found. If you are planning your latest thrifting outing, I would suggest three things: 1. Be intentional. Make sure you know exactly what you are looking for. Sometimes you can get lost in the excitement of good prices and leave the store with a bag full of items you may not like as much once the thrill has worn down.

Have some fun with the items you buy. One of my favorite purchases from a thrift store was a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt high-waisted jeans. I didn’t like how they fit my leg, so I took a pair of scissors and made them into shorts. I think I bought them at least 3 years ago, and I still have them!
