by Laine Dakin-Salomonson Kenzie stepped onto the Arizona modeling scene last year (2102), signing with The Agency Arizona in mid summer. Within weeks she walked for the established designers at Phoenix Fashion Week including Mariska, Mabella Chic, Sylvia Bours and Furne One. A dream come true for any little girl but a daunting debut especially for someone a little shy. Luckily her shyness was tempered by training from The Agency AZ, while the poise and balance gained from almost a decade of martial arts training (2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo) and 4 years of English riding, dressage and showjumping. She is turns Sweet Sixteen this April! Kenzie is also good in academics equally good in English (AP) and Math, sheís in her 3rd year of French, (sheís been planning for that Paris Runway for a long time, but will learn Italian if it is Milan instead) and wants to be an Engineer, around her modeling career of course! When asked what her favorite modeling job was, she says, ìIíve enoyed them all, but Iím looking forward to the next oneî (although she loves the Runway). ìEvery job has taught me something. I canít wait for the next challenge. Every person Iíve met... photographers, stylists, MUAís, hairdressers, and all the other models, has been wonderful.

Patricia Sehar Peerzada creates clothing influenced by traditional sources in Africa, Asia, Native America and Europe. She often uses natural fibers which she hand prints using the ancient art of block printing which she learned studying traditional arts in Pakistan. Controlling the placement, intensity and content of the prints in her limited edition separates and ensembles, makes each piece a wearable art treasure. Concentrating on the drape and fall of the fabric, Sehar flatters the figure of all types of women with her simple unique shapes. Peerzada’s work has been carried in Nordstrom, Toast and Strawberries, Origins, C’Est La Vie, Metamorphosis and many other boutiques. Her lines, Urban Masala and Saharah, have been featured in magazines, books and fashion blogs such as Ebony, Heart and Soul, Washington Post, Dubai Times, Pakistani Glamour, Today’s Black Woman, “Threads of Time: The Fabric of History”, Essence Online, Guyana Fete BHF Network, CIAA Africa and many more. Her work as been worn by Danny Glover, Sweet Honey In The Rock, T’Keyah Crystal Kemah, Aretha Franklin and others.
Urban Masala Offers Metropolitan Style New York Fashion Week represents a melting pot of conceptual fashion ideas shared not only in a country of mixed cultures, but the city itself has profoundly mixed cultural roots. This is why the fashion line Urban Masala is so apropos for metropolitan markets such as New York. Urban Masala, represents the mix of cultures and lifestyles in urban centers across America. There are many cultures that can identify with the eclectic mix of patterns applied to the garments. Much of the line features “one-of-a-kind elements where the shape repeats but the content changes. The Designer, Sehar Peerzada creates clothing which are designed as ensembles but are sold as separates that can be mixed and matched to the wearer’s taste. This is a design feature that has significant economical benefits as well as aesthetic benefits to the customer.
The line makes for an ideal vacation wardrobe that offers separates which are versatile and easy to layer, mix and match. The Urban Masala collection incorporates handmade, non-seasonal fabrics from around the world; as well as unique shapes of pants, tops, jackets, shawls and dresses --which are easy to fit and comfortable to wear. The line was intentionally created using elastic waists; with few zippers or buttons for sized fitting to be less of a definitive issue. “Urban Masala is a cultural hybrid collection because it brings the ethnic mix to a level where it is wearable, not as costume but as everyday wear. Many people won’t wear ethnic clothing because it’s perceived as a costume. As a form of cultural expression you’re not obligated to wear the complete cultural dress anyway. Because we are in an era where corporate culture is not supportive of cultural dress as everyday wear, people tend to take a little dab of culture and apply it to contemporary dress. This is something I noticed when I sold full mud-cloth coats through Nordstrom some years ago. Mud-cloth was my entree into Nordstrom Department Stores. The coats sold well, so I know that there is a market for cultural hybrid fashions,” Perrzada states. Urban Masala offers women alluring dresses without women being sexually over exposed. Peerzada proudly defines her approach to aesthetic design as being “old school” because she likes ensembles that are matching, as does her customer base. Typically, the younger generation consciously purchase separates; and looks to mix different designer pieces. The Urban Masala fashion line is a new moniker for what Peerzada has always created using hand block printing on non-seasonal fabrics. The line is intended for a broad customer base that identifies with a cultural hybrid approach to achieve a modest metropolitan style.

Deep in a maze of frustratingly beautiful houses and crisply cut golf courses was myself, in an old Honda Accord, searching for my destination, while lost in the lore of the day. My destination was none other than a fashion show, nestled in the gorgeous labyrinth of the Biltmore residential plaza in Scottsdale, AZ. Once parked, I made my way to the main entrance, dragging along in the sauna of the Sonoran Desert. To refresh my eyes I was met with a front table of attendants from the Humane Society. They welcomed me and showed me the way backstage. Upon arrival I was reunited with many models I had worked with in the past but had not seen in a few moons. A great perspective to have as a model in this industry is that of an honest eye. I get to see how models act and behave backstage. I am able to share meaningful in depth conversations about who they are and experience their character first hand. A few models and I walked out to view the stage before the show began and were awestruck by the turnout. The fashion show, entitled “Compassion for Fashion,” couldn’t have complimented the beauty of its surrounding habitat any more than it did. Even with the 80 degree weather causing sweat outbreaks, and beautiful models glowing backstage I couldn’t have guessed that the show could get any hotter, until we were introduced to dozens of furry friends joining the show in heartwarming fashion. The concept of having beautifully bred dogs and fashion models showcasing sophisticated styles was a unique yet successful blend at first thought. These dogs were under the care of the Humane Society and were specifically chosen for the show to exemplify their peaceful and kind nature towards children and adults. Some of the dogs were overjoyed to be in the presence of so many different people and waited as anxious as the models to walk the stage. As the show began, recorded testimonials were shared by Humane Society staff about their fellow dogs, and there was an emotional surge that was fairly overwhelming, especially while looking into the faces of the dogs that were saved, their smiling, loving faces. I was eager to show my compassion for dogs as I have always been a dog owner and lover for all my young years. I was assigned a lad named Leo, a massive Newfoundland who was infatuated with the scent of women, apparent as he wouldn’t listen to me call him but walked excitedly around sniffing all nearby. I laughed as we already shared something in common. The audience began to erupt as a pair of twin male models striped down to their designer pants in synchronized fashion. Next a lovely lady walked up with her small Chihuahua, and the crowd gasped in adoration. Soon it was our turn to take the stage, and he finally gave me acknowledgement that I was attempting to hold him by sniffing and licking my hand. Just the smallest token of affection well received on my end.
Leo, standing about 3 and a half feet off the ground made his way up the staircase into the light revealing his brown spots on his white fur. I was pleased to see that we were color coordinated. As we were signaled to take the walkway Leo lead me with a strong pull. Once dead center the crowd clapped and cheered as Leo proudly made his way with his chest out more than I could. We stopped three times at the end of the runway for the camera and marveled children desiring to pet the tame giant. On our way back towards the exit Leo made one more quick stop to lick a fan near the stage, an old woman who rose from her table and made her way about ten feet to say hello. After exit we parted ways but Leo left a warm burn within. The collaboration coordinated between My Sisters Closet Boutique and The Humane Society was a wellreceived special event to partake in. I was honored to represent not only my agency but those dogs who were victims of an often crooked society. For me, the bond between dog and man is one that is sometimes stronger than ones shared by two people. Guests of the show were able to visually shop for fine dresses or men’s apparel while being entertained by music, and sentimentally touched by the furry fellows that graced the stage. The m a s t e r f u l bl e n d was a treat to be mixed in with, and ensuing my departure back into the sun kissed desert, I definitely t o o k a piece of sympathy and appreciation for all the people and dogs that were responsible for the show’s success.

“Moving to the east coast was not an option for me; I knew it was something I had to do to become an editorial hair and makeup artist. I’m no stranger to New York. I have had the pleasure of training at bumble and bumble academy located in the trendy meat packing district and attending Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for the last four seasons. As a teenager, I actually ran away from home in rural Wisconsin and went to New York City with $75 dollars in my pocket. I made it work then, and I’m making it work now. It was scary leaving my established salon business that I worked so hard in building to start fresh in a different city, but I believe my work ethic and portfolio speaks for themselves. I was born to be an artist and create beauty. Now, I’m challenging myself to showcase that on a larger platform.” Wade Lee

Not only did he build his salon business, but also used it network with other artist in a way that promoted and encouraged growth in the fashion scene in Phoenix. He is now using the same skills to jump start his career in New York City.

The essence of this shoot was the theme of spring time, rebirth, and coming alive. The flower styling is unusual and extreme but is meant to symbolize growth and development. We can see flowers and plants grow and blossom, but its not so easy to see a person develop and bloom. The flowers are meant to represent the potential every girl has to grow and develop into the beauty they were meant to be.

or perhaps constructivist I seem to find myself cast in the role of someone who so often can be relied upon to deliver a ‘zen-like’ spanking, to punish the malaise and mediocrity of the fashion industry! So it is indeed a pleasure to have stumbled across something that is certainly not mediocre, and of which I can find much to say that is good! Many assume, I am sure, that my ‘aesthetic values’ are represented by my own label ‘Pure Mind Clothing’! PM does indeed evoke the purest elements of these values! However, not being by nature a ‘fundamentalist’, I can also appreciate another ‘aesthetic’! Providing it is one! And not the generally shameful third rate ‘retro- centric’ over marketed branding tyranny and ‘emperor’s new clothes-ism’ that the fashion industry has for too long been peddling! Which bring me to an orchid in a sea of effluent, called ‘TSYNDYAMA KROUJILOV’! htttp://tsyndymaonline.com - Tsyndyama comes originally from the far flung reaches of ‘Asian/Russia’, after graduating in Mechanical Engineering from University in Moscow, she moved with her husband to the USA, and is now based in Washington DC. Tsydyama always had a talent for fashion/creating clothes, and had learnt excellent dressmaking skills (much to be recommended) at a very young age! She was therefore not only able to imagine and visualize her ideas, but also to actually make and realize them as a perfectly finished and beautifully cut garment! These early dressmaking, cutting and ‘craftsmanship’ skills, are now reflected totally in the excellence and professionalism of her current design package! A standard of excellence in fact which has now brought her to the attention of a leading Paris fashion house, who are currently finalizing arrangements to manufacture a number of her designs.
It is interesting to note that like the great Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Tsyndyama, did not study fashion, but comes from a more ‘scientific engineering’ background, this is perhaps why her work has such an powerfully seductive craftsman like simplicity purity and elegance, when measured against the dogs breakfast of the current fashion industry. It is also extremely commercial and manages to be so, without sacrificing aesthetic values, elegance or good taste! Nor is it in any sense ‘retro-centric’, rather is timeless in both realization and spirit! It is hardly surprising that that Europe, and most certainly Paris, has reacted so enthusiastically to her work, for Her designs have the elegance precision deceptive simplicity and attention to detail, combined with the most beautiful and exclusive materials, that will, I am sure, bring her great success amongst those many elegant European ladies who value beautiful design, style quality and timeless elegance! Indeed just as they have amongst so many of the residents of Washington DC in the Diplomatic Corps, Corporate Execs and soon to be high flying young gunslinger college graduates! It has been an absolute pleasure to discover Tsyndyama’s work, particularly so, for it does not shout at you, or demand, it is not loud flashy or vulgar! It is again, simple beautiful elegant feminine timeless, sensual and sexually enhancing in an entirely none sexist way! For those all those company’s both in retail and manufacturing who are feeling increasingly desperate and lacking in both sales and direction, Tysndyama is someone you should be talking to right away! Having put my ‘zen-spanking stick’ down for a moment, I am feeling slightly flushed with the delicate bloom of ‘far- out- ness’! However! Fear not! For there are enormous numbers of fashion industry buttocks in desperate need of spanking! We know where you are! And we are coming to get ya!
