A WONDER-FUL STORY

A wonder-ful woman gets the surprise of her life from her superhero husband.

A Richards client wanted to surprise his wife (an avid Wonder Woman fan) with an exquisite piece of jewelry, so with the help of the staff, he hid clues in different departments of the store for his wife to discover. The clues had a Wonder Woman image on the front, and on the back of each was one-half of the puzzle answer. Store manager and co-owner Scott Mitchell played the role of Lex Luthor to create further fun!

NEAR & FAR GALA ON THE RED CARPET ...CHANGING LIVES

Above: The evening opened with a breathtaking performance by co-master of ceremonies Tony Dovolani and dancers. Below and left: Models presenting the latest fashions walked the red carpet and posed before the paparazzi as vintage movies played in the background.

An Oscar-worthy crowd walked the red carpet at Mitchells for the 19th Annual Near & Far Aid Gala. This year’s glamorous Academy Awards theme sent a wink to Hollywood and the movies: giant Oscar figures, Penske Porsches and Klieg lights ushered in the guests. They also posed for grand-entrance-worthy photo ops, some enhanced by co-master of ceremonies, Dancing With the Stars personality Tony Dovolani, who was on site for a pic! Cool cocktails and fabulous food served among gold stars and movie posters created a Hollywood feel that continued with dancing and music after the credits rolled. Engaging in spirited bidding with co-master of ceremonies Alisyn Camerota of Fox News and auctioneer Eric Nathan, the crowd displayed their generosity—including philanthropists Rob and Cindy Citrone’s amazing offer to match funds raised by the silent auction.

Derek Lam on right, with Slyva Yepremian run the show!

Their design senses appeared to be in perfect harmony and the balance of their personalities was nothing short of simpatico! Award-winning fashion designer Derek Lam and renowned jewelry designer Sylva Yepremian of Sylva & Cie. met once again (last season they joined forces at Mitchells in Westport) to wow the crowd of Richards luncheon guests with their witty and interesting repartee. Each one’s inspiration sources and travel anecdotes were shared and their charming chat exposed the designers’ similarity in approach. Derek Lam’s spring collection for 2014 was enhanced by models wearing Sylva’s unique artisan jewelry pieces. Guests sat at high-top sleek fabric-covered tables in white with simplistic white flower arrangements and white bamboo stools. After the presentation, attendees flocked to both designers’ trunk shows to make their fashion selections.

Models pose as luncheon guests jot notes and take snaps of their favorite pieces in between appetizer bites.

The colorful invitation read, “Grab your girlfriends, have lunch and watch as models trip the light fantastic in a stiletto and satchel strut down our runway!” A surprise format with toe-tapping, unforgettably catchy music created a unique fashion show at Mitchells as clients shared the day with friends. The runway was curtained to expose the models from the legs down, which highlighted the fabulous shoes. A selection of complementary handbags from Richards’ spring collection were shown swinging by the models’ sides. Sought-after styles and fun food stations with unique and healthy offerings were the highlight of this creative event. A percentage of sales from the event was donated to Greenwich YWCA’s Domestic Abuse Services.

Richards’ shoe department was packed with luncheon shoppers devouring the delicious selection of fabulous shoes.

Marking their 10th anniversary of showing on Paris runways, Akris celebrated with Richards and guests at an exquisite fashion show and luncheon. CANALI POKER: TEXAS HOLD ’EM ON LONG ISLAND Kobe burgers, catching up with old friends, and of course, the poker tables were big draws for the guests.

Marshs camaraderie shown by store manager Chris Mitchell, in hat, with the fun Men’s Department staff, pictured left to right: Gerald Eugene, Tony Famiglietti, Chris, Steve Kerman, Gerry Federici and Luke Merryman.

Marshs invited clients for an evening of camaraderie. Italian menswear designer Canali hosted the evening of casino poker and Kobe burgers. Clients brought friends to partake in the poker tournament and vie for great prizes from Canali. The first-place winner received a gift certificate toward a Canali suit, second-place a Canali sportcoat, and third-place a Canali leather goods item. The Marshs staff, including co-owner and manager Chris Mitchell, had a great time and even went in poker-face attire with baseball caps pulled low and sunglasses on—so as not to give away their hands. Chris “Nothing-up-my-sleeves” Mitchell and Laurie Palladino of Marshs join the guests to chat about poker tips.

GUESTS CELEBRATE HOPE DURING THE ALZHEIMER’S GALA AT RICHARDS Cristin Marandino welcomed the record crowd.

Above: Scott, Jack and Bill Mitchell welcomed a stunning group of supporters from Richards’ center stairway.

Headlined by film and television actress Kimberly Williams Paisley and her father, Gurney Williams III, the 2nd annual Alzheimer’s Association’s Celebrating Hope cocktail reception was an enormous success... the organization reached its very healthy fundraising goal via ticket sales, sponsorships, donors and live and silent auction items. The evening was created to inspire people to believe, hope and help make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The Celebrating Hope committee spread the word about the cause by tying purple bows around all 45 trees up and down Greenwich Avenue, making the front page of the Greenwich Time. Gorgeous florals by Winston Flowers of Greenwich and A Ring of Hope created by Terrain in Westport were stunning focal points for the additional donations to support the cause. Richards celebrated with windows featuring purple fashions, along with the purple orbs and lighted columns that decorated the venue as it housed a record crowd of almost 400 guests.

Inset: Winston Flowers of Greenwich decorated the first floor of Richards with interesting creations made of purple orchids, pink roses and touches of rustic driftwood. Heart-healthy gourmet hors d’oeuvres were served as a reminder to the attendees that maintaining a heart-healthy diet can be delicious!

Q:

Other than for weddings and special events, I don’t wear suits much these days. Is it okay to pull out what’s in my closet for occasional dressup events? Probably not. Although menswear is evolution rather than revolution, suits that are more than five years old, even from the best makers, will definitely look dated: trousers too long and baggy, jackets too roomy, shoulders too padded. Designers have gradually gone slimmer in suits, sportcoats and trousers, and fabrics have evolved so that today’s suits are comfortable and more travel-friendly than the old stuff in your closet. We’re betting you’ll find our fall ’14 suits so comfortable that you’ll choose to wear them in more casual settings, even when no suit is required.

Q:

Is it okay to text or email my sales associate when I have a wardrobe question? How can I maximize our relationship? Not only is it okay, but they would totally appreciate it! (Well maybe not at 3:00 a.m…) Our sales people have a wealth of information that can help you look your best every day. They can email you photos of new items as they arrive in store that will work with what you’ve already bought. They can inform you about the bestfitting jeans. They can help you match colors and patterns or figure out which tie to wear with which shirt collar. (For

58

example, your new skinny tie is not likely to work with a cutaway collar shirt, but yes, you can wear the brown suede shoes with your gray suit!) They can also suggest the perfect gift, wrap it and send it without you needing to leave your desk. Never be afraid to contact your sales associate for any fashion-related issue: their passion for fine clothing is the reason they chose this career, and your trust in them is the ultimate compliment.

I see that a lot of my favorite brands have Q: their own stores: do you carry the same styles that they do? Sometimes there’s crossover, but we try to customize our mix to the needs of our community. While fashion has become somewhat international, our buyers know their customers personally so it’s easy for them to fine-tune assortments to specific tastes and lifestyles. Another advantage of shopping an independent store: since we carry so many top brands, we can suggest how to mix your favorite pieces so you’re not dressed head-totoe in a single designer. This type of brand-blending adds creativity and personality to your look so you won’t see yourself coming and going. Stop by and we’ll show you how to do it!

FALL 2014 FASHION TIPS FOR HIM

Typically, there are two mistakes fledgling fashionistas make in color selections. For those who favor eye-popping color combinations, the two most obvious are 1) choosing colors that clash and 2) being too flamboyant. The other, particularly now that tonal ensembles are again stylish, is selecting colors so monochromatic they fade into one another. If eye-popping color is your fashion mantra, avoid colors that clash, or are flashy and loud. (Always get a second opinion.) Remember to alternate the tonal intensity of garments immediately next to one another; avoid pairing a flamboyantly colored necktie with an equally outrageous dress shirt. Remember, opposites attract. If monochrome is more your cup of tea, add visual interest by varying the color hue in each garment. Or, layer different, but related, surface textures atop similarly colored garments. Marry a nappy cotton flannel shirt and a texturally rich wool necktie to a cashmere sportcoat, then accent with a wool, linen or loosely woven cotton pocket square.

Pairing Patterns

DIRECTION A pattern that runs in one direction should never be positioned immediately next to a garment with a pattern that runs either 1) in the same direction, or 2) at a 90-degree angle. Instead, choose a non-directional (polka-dot, paisley, foulard), diagonal (repp), or multidirectional (plaid) complement.

SIMPLE HOW-TOS FOR ADDING VISUAL INTEREST. BY ANDY STINSON Never mind John Molloy, America’s former self-proclaimed fashion guru, who warned three generations of men against mixing motifs when he wrote in his Dress for Success to “never put two patterns together.” Those familiar with fashion history credit this admonition with putting a near 35-year chill on adventurously styled menswear. Also to be ignored is Molloy’s equally absurd “dress code rule” for pattern-mix management: “Always separate patterns by a solid.” Mind Molloy’s strict advice and you’ll appear dated and conservative. There are, however, a few “soft rules” that can be used to guide you toward interesting, handsome style statements that consistently garner rave reviews and admiring glances.

MOOD Sometimes called “attitude,” mood typically refers to a garment’s seasonal theme or its position on the elegantto-casual spectrum. For example, novelty and

60

conversational neckwear, along with some repp and diagonal-striped ties, are typically sportcoat motifs and shouldn’t be paired with a serious dress suit. Seasonally speaking, madras plaids and linens are most appropriate during the warmer months and should be worn with a blazer or a lightweight spring suit.

SCALE Scale refers to a pattern’s size. Generally subtle in execution and sometimes indiscernible at a distance, smallor micro-scale motifs include pencil and pinstripes, miniature paisleys, pin dots, graph checks and tattersalls. Large scale motifs are visually bold, brazen and aggressively executed: Bengal and awning stripes, giant paisleys, large scale geometrics, oversized “nickel” dots and windowpane plaids. The rule of thumb is to significantly vary the scale of each element in your outfit. To achieve a visually dramatic but still sophisticated ensemble, complement a narrow pencil-stripe dress shirt with a bold diagonal-stripe or giant paisley tie.

TEXTURE Opposites don’t generally attract when it comes to mixing and matching textures. For example, a cashmere or wool flannel tie is best paired with a suit in a similarly lofty fabric. Likewise, pair matte finishes together, and complement visually radiant elements with garments of a similar luster. PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN KLUTCH, STYLING BY SHYAM PATEL

hroughout the ages, men’s clothing designers have tried to create suits that convey both power and comfort, yet too often it’s a tradeoff. Power suits are frequently rigid and/or overly structured so the wearer looks uncomfortable; soft suits can lack shape and substance meaning the wearer loses the presence and panache that a proper suit conveys. But with his recent foray into tailored clothing, Brunello Cucinelli is reinventing the suit as a luxury garment that men can live in! The new Cucinelli tailored cloth“THE JACKET’S ing is crafted in the recently purHALF-LINED chased D’Avenza factory, reputed to INTERIOR be the finest in the world. MINIMIZES THE “Expanding into fine tailoring was a WEIGHT.” natural evolution of our menswear Brunello Cucinelli collection,” Cucinelli explains. Since suits require a different level of expertise than sportswear, he sought out, purchased and collaborated with this highly respected clothing facility, working carefully with the artisans to ensure that the suits have his particular fit and relaxed sensibility. These are full-canvas garments, entirely hand-made. It’s the shoulder that’s particularly unique: semi-constructed so that there’s enough structure for shape (so it doesn’t look like a sweater) but not so much to make it stiff and unnatural. “The broad but soft shoulder paired with the trimmer waist and shorter length of the jacket creates a modern aesthetic. The minimal construction allows for easy wear; the half-lined interior minimizes the weight and allows the jacket to conform to the body,” Cucinelli explains. While the company has always been known for elegant sportswear, the new emphasis is on clothes with a more tailored image. Even outerwear has a more sartorial touch: overcoats are about six centimeters longer. Fabrics are less tech-y and more sartorial, many in fine wools and cashmeres. The look is still relaxed, but definitely more professional. Brunello Cucinelli started out in 1978 at age 25 with a small workshop, evolving his business into an international luxury brand with more than 1,200 employees. Based in the 14th-century hamlet of Solomeo, Cucinelli restored a castle to its ancient splendor and purchased a second facility at the foot of the town. In addition to his world-class fashion, he is recognized for his humanistic ideals, placing people at the center of his enterprise, always with respect for the environment. In 2013 he received an award from the Ministry for Cultural Heritage for contributing to the moral, cultural and civic growth of his country.

Brunello Cucinelli has been recognized as a custodian of beauty and creator of a humanistic business based on respect for his workers, and for the environment.

To Boot

ADAM DERRICK’S BEAUTIFUL FOOTWEAR COLLECTION IS ITALIAN MADE WITH A NEW YORK SENSIBILITY. BY JILLIAN LAROCHELLE What possessed lifelong New Yorker Adam Derrick and his Texas-born partner to open a cowboy boot store on the Upper West Side? “It was the 1980s. Urban Cowboy had just come out; it was the Studio 54 days. We rode the wave, but New York is not a natural cowboy boot market. It quickly became clear that To Boot needed to evolve to survive.” First they added clothing. Then, after a vivid dream in which Derrick saw the space “transformed into the most fabulous men’s shoe store,” they went back to a full focus on footwear. To Boot became known for lines that had never before been available in New York, but over time, Derrick’s exclusives began to fill the shop. “I wanted to create a line that could take a man from business to weekend to a cool dinner out. I went to some of the Italian factories whose quality we liked and started apprenticing: learning how shoes are made, going to components shows. It took a few seasons to pull together, then we converted the store to feature only my line.” Several more locations followed, but eventually Derrick opted to exit retail and focus solely on To Boot New York’s wholesale business. “We wanted our product to be in high-end

tions. The process utilizes time-honored shoemaking expertise but also incorporates the most up-to-date comfort technology. To Boot New York now offers an astonishing 100 styles per season, including about a dozen core styles that Derrick calls “old friends.” “It’s great how people get attached to certain pairs,” he says. “We’ve had a natural growth and evolution just because people love the shoes and tell their friends. That’s all we can hope for.”

A LOOK INSIDE THE MASERATI QUATTROPORTE ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA LIMITED EDITION. BY DAVID A. ROSE

Italy is renowned for many fine products: cuisine, wines and luxury fashions instantly come to mind. But high on the list of Italian gems are its exotic sports cars. Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati set the bar for fast and exquisitely designed racing machines. Every so often this automotive world crosses paths with the world of high-end fashions, but rarely have the results been so intriguing. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Maserati marque, the company has collaborated with top fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna to offer a limited series of 100 Maserati Quattroporte highperformance luxury cars. The 100 numbered cars represent each year Maserati has been in production. When two highly respected global companies of this caliber work together on a project, it becomes a celebration of Italian production and design not just from a standpoint An exclusive Owner’s of mechanical know-how, but also of fabric Collection kit is Ermenegildo Zegna’s innovation. Reminiscent of the finest Zegna suit, the silk fabric used for the car’s roof lining exhibits a tasteful and classic touch. The combination of leather and silk appears in soft shades of gray and cappuccino, which exude the tone of a Zegna menswear collection and give the vehicle its strong masculine identity. The exterior shade, developed exclusively for the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition, is called Platinum Silk. The exterior appeal of the car is further enhanced by the stunning 20” polished wheels. To drive a beautiful car is very satisfying, but the experience would be quite lacking if the car’s performance did not match its elegant looks. In this regard, the Maserati Quattroporte Ermenegildo Zegna Limited Edition will not disappoint. Thanks to its twin turbo V/8 and 530 horsepower, the car can catapult from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 191. Not only will the owner turn heads as he cruises along Main Street, but the vehicle’s speed and handling will impress even the most accomplished driver.

THE CHARMS OF BHUTAN ARE NOT WHAT YOU’D THINK. By Andrew Isaacs

MAGIC KINGDOM The sole surviving Himalayan Buddhist Kingdom, Bhutan is a tiny land of big surprises. Instead of GDP, they believe in GNH: gross national happiness. Cut off from the rest of the world until the 1960s, this remote, pristine nation has recently opened its doors to civilization. But just a crack. Still, it is said there’s been more change in Bhutan during these past eight years (cell phones, satellite TV, tourists!) than there had been in the past 800. Observing the havoc wreaked by industrialization (and Western materialism) in neighboring India and China, Bhutan clings tightly to its Buddhist identity, and to the values its people have treasured for centuries. Still 80 percent agricultural, neighbors help neighbors in the fields. Traveling from town to town with our driver and a guide, we were told that the oldest daughter inherits the family house and farm. “I feel sorry for the younger daughters,” I quipped, trying to be clever. “Oh no, it’s not like that,” my guide explained. “We don’t chase wealth; we would never think that

way…” In one town, installing a traffic light to replace the crossing guard caused such an uproar that the signal was removed, the guard reinstated. Plan for low-impact hikes along a river’s edge rather than intense rock- or mountain-climbing, considered disrespectful to the mountain. Plan to experience a society based on caring for one another, one with minimal stratification, with equal access to education and health care. Plan to meet gentle people in traditional garb who will reinforce your belief in human kindness. Getting there is tough: there’s one airline with infrequent flights. And the food is just okay. But you don’t go to Bhutan for such superficial pursuits; you go for a cultural and spiritual experience unlike any you’ve known. For more info, contact Aman (the Sanskirt word for peace) Resorts, with beautiful lodges across the country. They will customize a trip to meet your needs and fulfill your dreams.

“I expected to love the majestic views, the peaceful hikes, the Buddhist temples. But what I most adored was the people, their culture, the integrity of their lives.” INTERESTING FACTS ON BHUTAN History: Was a collection of warring fiefdoms until the early 17th century, when unifed by a leader fleeing religious persecution in Tibet. Location: Between the Tibetan Plateau and India. Size: 46,500 square kilometers. Population: 970,000. Topography: From 23,000-foot-high peaks in the north to low-lying plains and deep valleys separated by high mountain passes. Government: In 2008, transitioned from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy; held its first election. Religion: Vajrayana Buddhism, Hinduism. The Pharrell Factor: In 2006, Business Week rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia.

FILMS FOR THE FASHIONISTA

DUELING DOCUMENTARIES

TWO FILMS ON CONTROVERSIAL COUTURIER YVES SAINT LAURENT DEBUT IN 2014 A set of biopics on larger-than-life designer Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away in 2008, are hitting the States this year, sparking conversation and controversy amongst fans and critics alike. Saint Laurent’s longtime lover and business partner, Pierre Bergé, sanctioned the first film, Yves Saint Laurent by Jalil Lespert. Bergé lent the production 77 vintage outfits from the Fondation Pierre Bergé — Yves Saint Laurent’s official archives — which contains 8,000 garments by the designer. Bergé, however, did everything in his power to stunt production of the second biopic, Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent, allegedly because Bergé had already aligned with the other film and Bonello and his backers wanted more creative license. Bergé prohibited Bonello’s team access to the archives, forcing costume designer Anaïs Romand to laboriously recreate the couture looks herself, based on publicity photos and items in the public domain. This set their production team back and slowed down filmmaking significantly. In addition, Bergé threatened to sue if Bonello’s team even copied the designer’s outfits or sketches. Jalil Lespert’s sanctioned version, Yves Saint Laurent, which opened in France

earlier in 2014, provides new insights into the man behind the legend. Early in the film, Yves Saint Laurent, later to become one of the most respected designers of all time, is depicted as withdrawn and self-conscious. Saint Laurent got a head start on the fashion game, landing a job as Christian Dior’s assistant at a mere 21 years of age. Saint Laurent became Dior’s successor, but was later fired after business heads of the house became disenchanted

with the new direction Saint Laurent’s collections were taking, marked by looser shapes inspired by artists from Paris’ Left Bank. Saint Laurent was then drafted into the army but left after 19 days, suffering a nervous breakdown from being bullied for his homosexuality. He was committed to a mental institution in Paris where he was visited by love interest Pierre Bergé. Bergé later became his lifetime lover and protector.

Stills and promotional poster from Yves Saint Laurent, directed by Jalil Lespert and starring Pierre Niney.

Saint Laurent became famously enmeshed in the 1960s party scene and began a downward spiral, abusing drugs and alcohol, which was to become a lifetime pattern. In contrast to the slow-moving nature of the film are the decadent party scenes in which Saint Laurent is seen doing cocaine with a fast crowd at clubs and dallying with other men. This glamorous life of partying contrasts deeply with Laurent’s private struggles and inner pain, which is portrayed sensitively by actor Pierre Niney. Both Niney and Guillaume Gallienne, who plays Bergé, are spot on in their portrayals of the two men and their complex relationship (even according to Bergé). The film focuses primarily on the

romantic relationship between the two and Saint Laurent’s self-destructive lifestyle, at the expense of elaborating on Saint Laurent’s prolific and legendary career. The exception is the last few scenes, which feature little dialogue and let the clothes speak for themselves. For the fashion purist, Yves Saint Laurent has set the bar high for the competing film, Saint Laurent, at least in terms of its original fashions. There’s nothing like seeing Saint Laurent’s iconic creations on the big screen. Whether Bergé’s cooperation will skyrocket Yves Saint Laurent to success and set Saint Laurent up for failure is yet to be seen. May the best film win.

“I don’t go out often but I really like the burger at Minetta Tavern in New York. It’s a cool place because they have good music and they make a great margarita.”

“Trattoria Dell’Arte is right around the corner from our New York offices. It’s been around for decades. The food has always been good, but I remember going there many years ago and it was very crowded. There was a long wait and a lot of attitude from the staff. Truthfully, it was more trouble than it was worth. “Then two or three years ago I started going back. I’m not sure if they changed management or just had a change of heart, but now they greet everyone by name and with a handshake, and they give you a glass of prosecco while you wait. “It was a big lesson to me about the importance of service (and one I try to apply to my own business). FALL ESSENTIALS THIS SEASON’S MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS— AND HOW TO WEAR THEM. PHOTOGRAPHY BY GMD THREE STUDIOS / ART DIRECTION & STYLING BY WILLIAM BUCKLEY

1. THE SOFT COAT This jersey jacket takes the bulk out of layering. You can move easily, stay cool, and look put together all at the same time. Because of its softer expression, it’s much more at home with jeans, cargos and 5pocket pants than your stiff, structured sportcoats. It’s a versatile alternative to a sweater or can easily be layered over one. You’ll be 10 times more comfortable but look just as appropriate.

FALL ESSENTIALS

2. THE CUTAWAY

COLLAR SHIRT Formerly seen only on solid dress shirts, cutaway collars can now be found as a dressier detail on patterned sport shirts. It’s fine to skip the tie, or try one in knit, wool or cashmere for a fun departure from the standard silk.

3. THE SLIM SUIT Before fabric or even brand, the first thing others will notice about your suit is the fit. With its narrower leg, shorter jacket, and all-around trim look, the slim suit can complement any man, no matter his age or size. Aim for a very slight break in the pants; the hem should just caress the top of your shoe.

FALL ESSENTIALS

4. THE

TRAVEL BLAZER Made of the finest wool, this jacket has tons of resilience and a natural performance factor. It’s lightweight, packable and ideal for taking you through changing climates. With a soft shoulder and even softer fabric, Boglioli has truly mastered the travel blazer.

5. THE WOOL

5-POCKET PANT The wool 5-pocket pant is dressier than a jean, but just as comfortable. It’s warmer than a chino or twill, but just as elegant. It can be dressed up or down to take you from the office to a nice evening out. Trust us: you’ll be living in this style all season.

6. THE BOOT You’ve got dress shoes and sneakers, but what do you wear with those casual in-between looks? This boot is the answer. Mid-height boots keep you warm while still looking fashionable, and suede or leather can be worn throughout the winter except on the wettest of days. (Don’t forget to waterproof them before the first wear.)

THE JOYS OF YOUTH, THE MAGIC OF MUSIC, CAPTURED IN PHOTOGRAPHS. BY WAYNE MAIBAUM

A recent exhibit at Soho’s Morrison Hotel Gallery, curated by Julian Lennon and showcasing some never-before-seen photographs of The Beatles, reminded me of why we still love them. For 50 years, The Beatles have been credited with social change, from setting fashion trends to spurring the fall of communism! But for most of us, their importance is more personal: simply put, their music makes us feel good, restoring the promises of youth and providing a universal connection that transcends age, race, religion, politics and all such superficial barriers. (Imagine!) Our basic human emotions— love, loss, longing, regret, remorse, elation—continue to resonate in each resounding melody. And mysteriously, the older we get, the more we seem to get it. “What would you think if I sang out of tune Would you stand up and walk out on me Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song And I’ll try not to sing out of key I get by with a little help from my friends...” “Saving up your money for a rainy day Giving all your clothes to charity Last night the wife said Oh boy, when you’re dead You don’t take nothing with you but your soul…”

tailoring

Poor Fit Stiff shoulders and a full, boxy cut look unnatural and out of date. You deserve better!

Uncomfortable Low armholes make moving uncomfortable: every time you lift your arms, the entire body of your jacket lifts with you.

Inferior Fabric Generic, utilitarian fabric is rough and wrinkles easily.

BARGAIN SUIT CONSTRUCTION

Cheap Interlinings Shoddy inner workings are glued into the suit, so after only a few cleanings, the glue will begin to wear down and come through the fabric in unsightly patches.

Inside a Suit At first glance, these two dark gray suit jackets appear to be similar. But take a closer look (or feel) and you’ll quickly see that color is the only thing they have in common. The jacket on the left is made by Ermenegildo Zegna, produced in its European factories from one of its proprietary high-performance fabrics. On the right is a scratchy, boxy bargain version, available at a national menswear chain famous for its price-slashing promotions. Sure, you can get three for under $500‌ but you get what you pay for.

132

Exceptional Interlinings Zegna suits are full-canvas and made with the best interlinings in the world. This allows the jacket to lay beautifully against your body and ensures longevity.

Superior Production

Quality Buttons

In all, 500 hands from the familyowned, vertically integrated company contribute to the making of each suit, from acquiring the wool to weaving the innovative fabrics to the final finishing work on your barchetta breast pocket.

Buttons are made of highquality Corozo, genuine horn or mother of pearl and color coated in-house to perfectly match the hue of your garment.

The fine wool fabric “breathes,” so it’s cool and comfortable even in overheated office buildings.

In a spoof that aired earlier this year on SNL, comedian Vanessa Bayer suggested that “affordable and absorbent” suits from this national chain were better suited to wiping spills and soaking up bacon grease. Because of the chain’s “innovative buy-one-get-three-free pricing,” she explains, “they’re effectively cheaper than paper towels” and “I can feel good about throwing them away when I’m done.” We cringe at the idea of a disposable wardrobe and prefer to invest in classic clothing that’s made to last. Come into the store and see for yourself why top-quality tailoring is the obvious choice.

PINSTRIPES IN HIS SIXTH YEAR WITH THE NEW YORK YANKEES, MARK TEIXEIRA IS MORE THAN A BASEBALL SUPERSTAR. BY KAREN ALBERG GROSSMAN

Perfect in

My first interview with Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira took place end-April, a day after a win over the Red Sox (9 to 3) at Fenway, and Tex (just off the disabled list) was pretty upbeat. “I’m happy with where the team is at this early point in the season,” he confided. “There are a lot of new faces in the clubhouse, a lot of getting used to each other, but they’re great people, on and off the field.” Denying that all the commotion surrounding Jeter’s retirement might be distracting, Teixeira explained, “All the little things that you take for granted as a professional athlete, Derek is enjoying them more than ever this season. It’s reminding us that no matter how great your career is, it’s going to be over at some point, so it’s important to appreciate it while you’ve got it.” Asked how he was feeling physically (following a strained right hamstring and last year’s lengthy rehabilitation after a surgically repaired right wrist), Teixeira sounded optimistic. “I’m feeling good; I’m getting there…” he

maintained. “Most of my body is in one piece…” In a New York Times interview later in the season, sports writer Jorge Arangure Jr. noted that Teixeira’s time on the DL apparently helped him regroup. “When Mark Teixeira squarely makes contact, his swing appears tight and compact, often sending the ball high and far. He looks like the old Teixeira, not like an old Teixeira.” Famous for his lightning-fast reflexes, Teixeira is considered among the best-fielding first basemen in the major league (he won the coveted Gold Glove Award for first basemen in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2012) as well as a powerhouse hitter. But as important to him as his baseball reputation is his role as mentor for young people: for all of his 34 years, his life has been focused on God, family and giving back, a tribute to his parents who insisted on a traditional Christian upbringing. He’s been married to his wife Leigh for 12 years; they have three beautiful children: eight-year-old Jack, six-year old Addison, and William, who’s three. “I try to spend as much time with my kids as possible, so I’ve learned to compartmentalize my life,” he explains, “to schedule everything carefully so I have time for the things that “BECAUSE matter most. Of course I play lots of OF MY TRAVEL baseball: from 2:00 to 11:00 p.m. SCHEDULE every day in season. The kids are I WEAR A LOT asleep when I get home so I treasOF SUITS.” ure our mornings, —Mark Teixeira especially summers when I get more of their time…” His charity focus is Harlem RBI, a program for innercity kids that includes academics, after-school activities and various summer events to ensure the best possible opportunity for these children to succeed. “I’ve always been passionate about helping kids so when I signed with the Yankees, I was looking to align with a youth organization. My sister worked at a company that was a sponsor of Harlem RBI and I found it to be a wonderful organization that does

great things for inner city kids. It lines up with all the things I’m passionate about: children, baseball, strong values.” I ask him if the Yankees’ reputation for “buying” top players at astronomical salaries isn’t perhaps sending the wrong value message to these kids. Tex responds thoughtfully: “Winning games and putting a good product on the field is what our fans want. So if we don’t develop enough top talent from the minor leagues, we have to go out and get it via free agents... Essentially, we’re entertainers: we do whatever it takes to make the fans happy.” When he’s not playing baseball, Tex enjoys fishing and golf, as well as a few side businesses. “I needed to think about my life after baseball. When considering opportunities, I wanted something that was really me. Nutrition has always been important to me so Tex with M editor-in-chief when I came across this incredible Karen Alberg Grossman. little juice bar in the East Village two years ago, I knew I wanted to be part of it. I thought that if I could use my connections to help grow a business that helps people get healthy, it would be a win-win. So I became a partner in Juice Press, which is now up to 20 locations…” Tex confides that healthy eating has its boundaries. “I admit it: my weakness is carbs. I’m half Italian, so I love pasta, bread, muffins... But most of the time, my wife makes sure I’m eating healthy...” Which is why he looks so good in those fitted suits he wears. “As a professional athlete, I have to wear suits on the road. And I have to keep updating my wardrobe because it’s always getting beat up with so much travel. Plus I’m in a lot of different climates so I need a variety of weights. My style is definitely conservative: I like solid suits in navy or gray; I’m clearly more Wall Street than East Village. Since my suits are classic, I try to spice things up with ties. I’ll wear a nice solid suit with a blue or white shirt and then I’ll try to find a great tie, maybe Armani or Zegna or Talbott. But I don’t shop by label: I just ask my sales guys at Richards and they never steer me wrong. “My casual wardrobe is also conservative: usually jeans, a button-down shirt, and if it’s a cool, a quarter-zip sweater. I have jeans from Hickey Freeman, Seven and Lucky. But I don’t have a ‘lucky’ outfit like some superstitious players...” Asked about the ultimate pressure of being a professional athlete—the 24/7 media scrutiny— Teixeira shrugs it off. “Athletes should be held to the highest moral standards,” he maintains. “Kids look up to us almost too much, which is a tremendous responsibility. And a tremendous joy.”

IN AN EMERGENCY If you find yourself in a pinch after hours, dial the main store number and follow the prompts to be connected directly to one of our family’s home numbers. We’re always available to come to your rescue!

SERVICE IS PARAMOUNT. COMPLIMENTARY GIFT WRAP

RETURN POLICY

We offer complimentary gift-wrapping for your purchases, on any day you want. You concentrate on choosing the perfect gift; we’ll do the rest.

We have a liberal return policy, where you can bring your purchases back if you are not satisfied with them within a reasonable period of time. We want to make sure you love your new items when you get home, as much as you do in the store.

CLOTHING DONATIONS Service is important to us, not only in our store, but also in our community. We will help you clear out those unwanted items that have been cluttering up your closet, while providing for a good cause. All discarded items will be donated to a local charity — we will coordinate the donation and make the delivery ourselves.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

BY APPOINTMENT

As a family business, we feel that it is essential to create a shopping experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family. At Mitchells, Richards, and Marshs we provide interactive play areas so that your time with us can be more relaxed, and your children can still have fun.

Our personal shoppers are available to make your experience here as effortless as possible. For your convenience, they will pre-select a wardrobe to fit your clothing needs, placing the garments in a private fitting room. Once our associates have learned your style and needs, they can keep an eye out for specific items you might be looking for in the future. Call Debbi O’Shea at 203.622.0551 for more information.

A loose thread or button can be just the thing that unravels your day. Bring in any suits or outerwear with buttons that need assistance, and we’ll re-attach or tighten them for you, on site and free of charge. We like to see you looking your best, down to the details.
