ave you ever noticed that art and fashion go hand in hand? How each gets inspired by the other? Well, last weekend during LA Fashion Week, I went to the opening of CONCEPT at Ace Gallery on Wilshire Blvd. Boy was I in for a treat, or shall I say steam bath?!? The airconditioner-less gallery hosted the three night fashion extravaganza, featuring 24 ultra talented and rising young designers, and about a dozen brilliant artists under one roof to present fashion shows, live art installations, and culture. This event really felt like a 1990’s HIP-HOP club inspired by Vivienne Westwood to Helmut Lang, almost everyone was in vintage inspired grunge clothing wearing this season’s dizzy-high platforms and plenty of fun and festive arm candy. The fashion shows were entertaining and most of them started with fun acts such as opera singers, live drums and native bohemian dancers.

FASHIONISM
Here are some of my fashion obsessions of this season: Jeffrey Campbell’s have been taking the streets by storm. Not only are they trendy and inexpensive, but they are comfortable too. Every fall shoe I have been eyeing lately are always JC’s. Aside from seeing fashionista’s donning Jeffrey Campbell’s at the first day of CONCEPT, some designers also put them in the runway shows! Another heart fluttering season trend is accessories. Pay close attention to the variety of bracelets stacked on one wrist and colorful dream clutches and purses. VINTAGE ALERT: almost every person I know is into this new vintage inspired flea market look. It give people an opportunity to own one of a kind items with unique historical importance. And it’s official: fashion is bored with black! The new palettes of stylish shades for this fall are burgundy, cobalt, rusty gold’s and beiges. These colors flooded the runways of CONCEPT LA. Another trend that many fashionista and runway designers were doing was the drappy and layered looks. But not the mitchy matchy kind of layering. It was all about the contrasts, mixing lace with animal prints, and even colored leathers with fur. I can’t wait for it to actually cool down here in LA, so I can bust out my trench coat, knit scarves, and 4 fun fad JC booties.
Nuvula’s show began with a live performance by an amazing opera singer dressed like he was from the Medieval Times.
The second I heard LiL WAYNES 6 Foot 7 Foot bump though the speakers before the S&G show began, I know this was going to be urban feel brand. LiL WAYNES single is now on Itunes! Sachika’s runway opened with a live drums by Soul Collectors & flirty tribal meets bohemian dancers dressed in provocative undergarments covered in leafs.
The artwork by The Date Farmers is inspired by the Mexican-American heritage and pop culture. The entire gallery was filled with their photos, paintings, and sculptures. They bought elements of street gangs, graffiti, iconography, prison art and tattoos under one roof to experience ghetto street life. They also had many pieces of religious figures and folklore. My favorite piece was the chucks hanging on the electric wire across the gallery. It represented a gang related lifestyle and urban symbolism.

NAILS: Nail update! This seasons hottest polishes are rich shades of reds and yellows. Fashionist’s all over the gallery rocked colorful vibrant nails, so did the models from CURLY-V
2
LIPS: Summer is Over, but don’t pack away your vibrant lipsticks yet. Its all about the peach & oxblood lips! Many party-goers at concept used these shades to brighten up their outfits.
3
MASCARA: Dramatic, velvety thick black lashes are so in. Don’t apply only one coat, keep going! The Ice Hunter girls mastered this eye catching look.
4 EYES:
It’s all about this seasons muted autumn colors; gold's, rusts & peaches all of which that flooded the6 runways!

They are a perfect finish to autumns chic polish. We are not talking about diamonds and pearls or Louboutins. Were talking about statement making, stud spike 7 encrusted, vintage inspired rebel looks such as bulky Jeffrey Campbell's and colorful bracelets and cuffs.

DO-ISM & DON’T-ISM
Last time I checked Halloween was a few weeks away! YAYIKS! Did these girls not get the memo that it was a fashion event? All together these outfits were a complete disasters, but I always love challenging fashion. Pulling these outfits apart and only utilizing a “FEW” pieces will make this outfit more likeable and less circus like. Left: I don’t commonly like the expression “less is more” but in this case....it is! For instance take the farmer hat with those Ozzy Osbourne sunglasses. or her loose fitted lace top with even baggier slacks. Taking away the loose shirt and adding a more fitted one, taking away the farmer hat and braided tassel belt would make this outfit more affable and stylish. Don’t ya think?
Right: I call them road kill disco! Lets take the middle girl for instance, I love how confident she is in pulling off a midriff open vest and a hippie head band. But those skinny jeans with a slit down the middle makes the outfit less likeable. If she wore high-waisted wide leg 70s inspired trousers she would definitely have the look of the night!

Everyone knows her from one of LA’s popular blogs, TheSTYLEmap. Emily Kolberg moved to LA to follow her passion, after graduating and working at a cooperate fashion company as a junior associate designer , she noticed her passion heading to a new directions; trends.
Who was your favorite designer or store when you were 15? Abercrombie & Fitch—It was the coolest store in the Midwest at the time! Who is it now? I now love all things vintage, that's my favorite kind of shopping. As far as brand goes, I can always find something I love by Lush.
If you weren't a blogger, what would you be? If I weren't a blogger and didn't work in fashion I would be… A teacher. I love learning from people and sharing the things I've learned with others. What do you love and hate about LA? Love: Weather, flea markets, and people. Hate: Traffic and lack of public transportation.
How did you start in your profession? I went to school at FIDM for Product Development and started working in the industry in the design field. I realized that trending was my passion and took a leap of faith to start theSTYLEmap! One word that describes your style? Ever evolving.

We have been so addicted to it! It is a our very own photo album of trends, inspirations and anything and everything fashion. Don’t miss out from the fun… join today! Social networks and media platforms have taken over the world over the past few years. As shocking as this sounds social media is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution. Facebook has overtaken Google as the most visited site, and if FACEBOOK was a country it would be the world’s 3rd largest. Over 50% of the world’s population is under 30 years old, and over 96% of them have joined social networks. Some celebrities have more followers on Twitter than some countries have in population. The top ten in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004. We no longer search for news, news finds us. YouTube: Social Media Revolution

INSTALLATIONS CURLY-V
Make-up artist Melanie Mills & Summer Rose created an installation called “Futuristic Ice Hunters” Their models were dressed in full feather attire and had heavy blue lipstick and clear eye contacts. They also incorporated a stunning live owl had me feeling like I was stranded in a forest in the middle of winter. IF YOU ARE INTRESTED IN FEATHER ACCESSORIES YOU CAN FIND THEM AT DANIIGURL
Curly-V previously worked for Jeremy Scott before going on his own. His installation features a 60’s inspired tea party garden which was filled with pretty paper flowers and pastel colors. The models were in vintage clothing wearing designer Jenny Dayco jewelry. This installation had everything from cat eye glasses, gloves to Mary Jane shoes! The 1960s look was seen a lot during FALL 2011 fashion shows. Designers such as Bottega Veneta, Blumarine & Jean Paul Gaultier were all inspired by this era.
MO WEAR featured a punk rock meets stylish edgy girls. It represented street wear with a bit of femininity and sex appeal. The models had teased Mohawks, smoky eye makeup with blood red lips.

Nuvula is an eco conscious company created by Columbian designer Rebecca Victoria. Nuvula was the opening fashion show of LA CONPECT. Her Spring/Summer 2012 collection was called “Farfalle, Sole E Ventoa-fairwell to oil” (Butterflies, Sun & Wind) The show opened with a live performance with an opera singer wearing a long black velvet robe and a feathered eye mask. The lights were dim and the vibe in the room was a little intense. But once the first model walked out I was a little shocked. She was wearing a fun bright vibrant flapper fringe dress inspired by the 1920’s. Once the second and third models started storming out, I noticed different themes and inspirations. After the 20’s vibe I got a circus-like feel with all the bright and vibrant colors. All the models had theatrical painted foreheads and fun 1920’s and 1930’s finger perms. Her collection also had inspiration drawn from Asian & Chinese luxury such as the kimonos and samurai armors. This collection featured upbeat colors, flapper fringes, plaids, abstract painting, fencing vests, body harnesses, and body suits.

Sequoia Emmanuelle & Gita Salem “S&G founded in 2007 is known for their inspirations fom undergound art. It was a complete change from what Nuvula left us with. The show started with Lil Waynes 6 foot 7 foot bumping through the speakers, which to me meant URBAN STREET even before I saw the first model. This collection featured cuff hems and lots of shredded material. Models were dressed in tight fitted pants, open midriffs, bat winged tops and little hooded jackets with major leather and zipper detailing. What I admired most was that a lot of the collection featured men's clothing. I fell head over heels for the men's long knit hooded jacket that had a peter pan collar, and my absolute favorite the baggy crochet items 15 in earthy rusty tones.
Sachika was founded by Vietnamese twins To-Tam & To-Nya Sachika. Their roots are in Paris & Montreal, but they relocated to NYC 3 years ago and started a clothing line. Their Spring/Summer 2012 collection was called “Mermaid Paradise Dance with the Ocean” The show opened with live drums by Soul Collectors, and sexy exotic native meets bohemian dancers dressed in undergarment covered in leafs that left everyone in high energy. The collection showcased the twins signature style, body conscious dresses in brilliant colors; skin tight mermaid dress, short sexy mini skirts and vibrant bold hip hugging shorts. The models came out the “wet hair” look and gold eye shadow on their eyebrows. My favorite show of the night.
