EDITORS
Fashion may seem daunting at first glance- impractical, expensive, and perhaps even frivolous. But if you take a closer look at those photographs on your favorite street style blog or that one editorial you saw last week, you will come to realize that much of what you see has quite a lot in common. The theme of the A/W 2012 issue is Back to Basics. In these pages, we present to you the principles of fashion and style--from simple techniques for layering to knowledge of 50 designer brands in the industry. We believe that sophisticated style pertains to every person and is achievable with a few simple rules. What the well-dressed girl on the street has in common with the model in the magazine is likely to be one of the following: 1. innovative layering -- experimenting with proportions, textures, patterns 2. thoughtful color palette 3. fantastic statement piece[s] 4. artful tailoring 5. poise & boldness This issue is especially catered to those who agree with our opening statement. We hope to help you see past the surface of fashion and gain a better understanding of style along the way. Grace Ban Ellen K. Lee

INTERVIEW WITH
FQ RN
BLOGGER of
THATSCHIC.NET : How do you define style?
: In general, style has a lot to do with the inner personality coming out and how you pick and choose the way you live. It's more than just what you wear; it comes from within as an expressive quality. FQ: What do you do when you feel lazy in the morning but want to look effortlessly chic? Do you have any staple go-to pieces or fail proof ensembles? RN: I have an 8am class so it can be very hard getting ready in the morning. Sometimes I pick out clothes beforehand. But for me [my staple] is coated skinny jeans- I’m wearing a pair right now. And I wear a lot of basic tees. I have a bunch from this brand called Le Petit Petit- he has the cutest dolman shirts. And boots, ankle boots, are very easy. FQ: What inspires you to dress up when all the other college students around you are wearing their Uggs and sweats to class? RN: I think I feel just more like myself when I dress up. Even during finals week, I dress up. I feel that when you dress better, you look better, which makes you feel better and perform better. Sometimes I get weird stares, but I like dressing up.

23
FQ: What would you say is the key to dressing up, but not looking overdone? RN: I think the key is not to look too literal when you dress up. Always putting together contrasting elements helps with that. Like if you're going for girly, play with masculine. And if you're wearing something with a lot of skin, tone it down with something more modest. FQ: Most college students have a limited budget, what good quality items do you think are important to invest in and what kinds of things are okay to skimp on? RN: For me personally, I think shoes are a huge investment. I thrift a lot too, so I’m able to save a lot. A good jacket is always a good investment and one nice pair of jeans, like a really nice pair that should fit your closet pretty well. FQ: Many people seek to develop their own sense of style but are often worried about not being able to "pull off " certain looks in the process, can you offer some advice on how to garner the confidence to wear what you want even if it is out of your comfort zone? RN: If you genuinely like it, you should feel confident. If you leave your house in the morning feeling confident, you should know it looks good. Confidence is key. If you don't feel comfortable, it’s probably not your style to begin with.
24
FQ: Where do you draw inspiration from and how to you make somebody else's look your own? RN: I’m mostly inspired by people, others' style, how they see life, I recently met Kelly Wearstler and it was the best experience of my life. She was so sweet. Just seeing how she sees things, the colors- she looks beyond the ordinary and pulls inspiration from how she perceives her surroundings. Her house is so beautiful. FQ: How would you say your blog has impacted your own life? RN: In a lot of ways. First, I’ve met so many people- friends, colleagues, people I can work with in the future. My blog is an extension of who I am now, it's like my baby and online diary. I think the experiences traveling are the best part of having a blog. FQ: Can you name a few of your favorite designers?
25
RN: Right now, Phoebe at Celine. Dries van Noten is always a favorite. Prada. Theyskens Theory is pretty good right now. FQ: Do you have any general thrifting tips? RN: Going with a friend helps a lot. I always go with my boyfriend. He loves going, thankfully. We just divide and conquer the store, like split up the store and each take a section. Also you always have to try things on because you never know how well or how poorly something might look on you.
