Love is in the air. Let’s take it slow. Commit to a long-term relationship with your clothes. Wear things more and cherish each piece. The more we love our clothes, the more we care for them, and the longer they last. Take this time to share a love story about an item of clothing that means a lot to you. 16

19

A sale can be a great time to purchase something you really love at a more affordable price but how many times do we buy something just because it’s cheap? Avoid the temptation of a bargain by planning ahead. Ask yourself ‘will I wear this 30 times or more?’ If the answer is no, it may not be worth the cost.

Anniversary of Triangle Shirtwaist Fire (105 years) On this day in 1911, 146 garment workers died in the fire that swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York. Today we remember those workers in the hope that such disasters are never allowed to happen again.

Earth Day

Fashion’s impact on the earth is staggering. 80% of all clothing ends up being burnt or in landfill. Whether we are a citizen, a brand or a policy maker, we must take responsibility for what we are making, buying and throwing away. We need to encourage and support new systems to change the way we think about our clothes, from the raw materials to the waste on the cutting room floor and the bulging excesses in our wardrobes. The most sustainable clothes are the ones you are wearing right now. Help change the culture and spread the word that #lovedclotheslast

22

International Biodiversity Day

An estimated 16% of all insecticide use is in conventional cotton cultivation. By destroying the valuable insects in cotton crops, their fundamental role in their ecosystems goes unfulfilled. Buying GOTS certified organic or Fairtrade certified cotton is one way to reduce this impact but diversifying your wardrobe can help too. Hemp and linen both require less water and pesticides than cotton to grow. 23 24 25 109th Session of the International Labour Conference runs until June 5th 26

The anniversary of Rana Plaza factory collapse. On this day, 24 April 2013, over 1,100 garment workers were killed when the Rana Plaza factory building collapsed. These people were making our clothes. On this day we remember them. On this day we hold brands accountable. On this day we ask #whomademyclothes.

Fashion Revolution is so much more than one week in April. We can make a difference every day in the choices we make and the conversations we have. Every action creates a lasting impact on the fashion industry and the lives of those working in it.

The countdown is on to Fashion Revolution Week. Take a look at our action kits for ways to get involved. Host a clothes swap, organise a film screening, plan a Haulternative and send us your Love Story. Add your event to the map on our website and remember, your voice matters. It’s estimated that in the UK alone, 39 million adults and children wear uniforms and branded workwear, of which only 10% is reused or recycled. If your school or workplace doesn’t currently provide one, organise a uniform take-back scheme to keep those blazers and shirts in circulation longer.

Point #1 in the Fashion Revolution Manifesto: Fashion provides dignified work, from conception to creation to catwalk. It does not enslave, endanger, exploit, overwork, harass, abuse or discriminate against anyone. Fashion liberates worker and wearer and empowers everyone to stand up for their rights. Anniversary of Tazreen Factory Fire (8 years)

On the 24th of November, 2012, a fire broke out at a garment factory in Bangladesh. At least 117 people were killed in the fire, and over 200 were injured, making it the deadliest factory fire in the nation’s history. The disaster prompted numerous proposed reforms in workers’ rights and safety laws. However, in the Garment Worker Diaries, 40% of respondents in Bangladesh reported seeing a fire break out in their current factories at some point during their employment. 25 26 27 Black Friday
