In addition to our financial support, FSF also provides our Scholars with internship and career opportunities, mentorship, networking, professional development, and unprecedented access to the industry’s most influential creative talents and business leaders.

The FSF’s ongoing mission can only be achieved through industry partnerships. As we look back on 2023, we recognize the vital role of our 100+ partners, including many of the industry’s foremost businesses, brands, and leaders. With their help, we have been empowered to create Named Scholarship initiatives that address deeply held goals, such as advancing the industry’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as sustainability and ethical sourcing, and so much more.

In the pages that follow, you will learn more about the highlights of our year in partnership. We acknowledge with deep gratitude the vision and investment of the many partners who worked with us and our Scholars and Alumni to create change.

Among the highlights of 2023 was the pleasure of awarding $1.1+ million in scholarship funding to 127 of the country’s top undergraduates with fashion-career aspirations—the members of the FSF Scholarship Class of 2023, as well as the third cohort of Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholars. Virgil’s decision to create the Scholarship Fund that bears his name has been transformational and we are grateful for both his inspiration and legacy, which guide our work every day.

Acknowledging the FSF’s current strengths and future possibilities, we also pursued a strategic planning process to clarify our vision, goals, and industry role—and to map our future as an organization. Among the many outcomes of our inspired planning was the ratification of a new FSF vision statement:

The FSF works to achieve an inclusive, innovative, and equitable fashion industry that identifies, engages, and cultivates the next generation of top fashion talent.

If you have been part of the FSF’s journey, and that of our Scholars and Alumni, thank you. Please join us in 2024 and beyond as we embrace an even more vital and meaningful future as an organization.

FSF CASE STUDY SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

For most students, the first step to joining the FSF community is to compete in the annual FSF Case Study Competition. This scholarship competition is divided into four main disciplines—business strategy, design and product development, marketing, and merchandising. The overarching theme of the 2023 Case Study Competition was the Future of Retail, in which technology and people drive retail brand success. Depending on their chosen discipline, our 2023 Case Study Scholarship Competition asked students to:

• Business Strategy: Develop a digital brand strategy for a retailer or brand for 2025.

• Design and Product Development: Design a collection that combines the existing brand identity with a new creative vision for the future design direction of the brand.

• Marketing: Create an authentic campaign that improves brand loyalty.

• Merchandising: Develop a social commerce strategy to be integrated into the existing merchandising strategy. Applicants were required to have a G.P.A. greater than 3.00 and to submit their Case Studies anonymously in order to maintain a non-biased selection process. Over 1,200 qualified applicants from 72 of our member schools competed for the 2023 scholarship. Our reviewing body of 500 judges (including FSF mentors, Alumni, and industry partners) selected 127 students to receive awards based on their Case Study scores, including 27 students to be awarded a scholarship from the Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund. In total, 123 Scholars were awarded at least $7,500, 52 of whom received a Named Scholarship of $10,000. Four top-scoring FSF finalists were awarded scholarships of $15,000. One of the four finalists received the largest award of $25,000.

52% were Black, Indigenous, and People of Color

26% were Federal Pell Grant-eligible

13% were first-generation in their families to attend college

Participating in the scholarship competition has given me insight into the way I work and motivated me to really commit to something.”

THE VIRGIL ABLOH ™ SCHOLARSHIP FUND

AS OF JANUARY 2023, FSF HAD AWARDED 70 VIRGIL ABLOH™ “POST-MODERN” SCHOLARSHIPS TO TALENTED STUDENTS OF ACADEMIC PROMISE OF BLACK, AFRICAN AMERICAN, OR AFRICAN DESCENT.

The “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund, created by designer Virgil Abloh in partnership with the FSF in July 2020, serves as a cornerstone of Virgil’s legacy and a force for industry transformation. At a time when many seek to advance equity and inclusion in the fashion industry, Virgil has already made an immeasurable impact.

It was Virgil’s dream to identify and support the 17-year-old version of himself. He was committed to providing the “way in” to every young fashion student who was in search of it. Virgil named the fund “Post-Modern” to signify that recipients will not only receive funds but also ongoing career-support services and mentoring through the Fashion Scholarship Fund. Past “Post-Modern” Scholars have been matched to internships and employment opportunities at many of the industry’s top companies, several of which are FSF partners. In 2023, the “Post-Modern” Scholars interned at CALVIN KLEIN, DENIM TEARS, ESTÉE LAUDER, KOHL’S, LEVI’S, LOEWE, MILK MAKEUP, OFF-WHITE, RALPH LAUREN, and TIFFANY & CO., among others. The Scholars were assigned to mentors from FSF’s broad network of executives, including: Narda Chan, Vice President Design, MACY’S; Wayne Fitzell,Design Director, OFF-WHITE; Liz Giardina , Creative Director, ANOTHER TOMORROW; Stacie Henderson, Chief Marketing Officer, Americas, TOD’S GROUP; Jess Lomax , EVP Global Head of Design, CALVIN KLEIN; Georgina Mok-Reyes, Development & Production, SUPREME; and Bruce Pask , Senior Editorial Director, NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP; among others.

A major gift from LVMH in 2022—representing the proceeds of a record-setting Sotheby’s auction of 200 pairs of LOUIS VUITTON x NIKE “Air Force 1” by Virgil Abloh sneakers—created the foundation for the “Post-Modern” Fund to become a continuing legacy that will extend Virgil’s impact for future generations of Scholars.

If Virgil were here today, I would tell him that he has created a space for us as BIPOC designers to flourish and finally ‘get our flowers.’ I want to thank him for forever guiding me on my journey as a designer.”

2023 Virgil Abloh™ "Post-Modern" Scholar, Indiana University

Throughout the year, the Class of 2023 Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholars were provided with robust professional development opportunities, from event programming to hands-on internships and entry-level job placement support.

In the spring, Virgil’s Scholars had the opportunity to complete the INSIDE LVMH CERTIFICATE . During this program, leaders from the LVMH FASHION GROUP, professors, and industry experts all shared their experience and knowledge with the students. The students were also given the unique opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of the luxury industry, immerse themselves into the LVMH ecosystem, and boost their CVs.

In the fall, “Post-Modern” Scholars had the opportunity to tune in for an inspiring conversation with Kendra BrackenFerguson, a globally renowned thought-leader and brand strategist, moderated by IFEOMA IKE, ESQ, equity thought-partner and author. Kendra is a powerhouse in the beauty and wellness industry as Founder and CEO of BRAINTRUST and BRAINTRUST FOUNDERS STUDIO; General Partner of BRAINTRUSTFUND; host of the Business of the Beat podcast; and author of the book, “The Beauty of Success: Start, Grow, and Accelerate Your Brand.” Scholars heard about her remarkable journey first-hand and were given the opportunity to ask questions and glean her expert insights.

Equity Initiative

In 2023, the FSF focused on improving equity and diversity in the fashion-industry talent pipeline through deeper relationship-building and collaboration. Expanding upon the Virgil Abloh™ “Post Modern” Scholarship Fund’s mission to increase access for Black talent within the field, our strategy included the launch of the HBCU Deans Roundtable, as well as targeted informational sessions with engaged administrators. These efforts led to an increase in competition submissions from Spelman, Morehouse, and Xavier, among others. Equally important, the FSF is utilizing the insights from these conversations to boost awareness of scholarship opportunities—and to find ways to remain connected to those who are beginning their fashion-career journeys.

Behind the scenes, the FSF Equity Committee—comprised of Board Members, Alumni, FSF staff, and under the leadership of Nata Dvir, Chief Merchandising Officer at Macy’s—identified top equity priorities for the FSF’s ongoing work, including strategies to connect with rising talent outside of traditional highereducation institutions and how to better support first-generation, Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous talent along each stage of their fashion-career journeys.

THE EQUITY COMMITTEE LANDED ON THREE PRIORITIES:

1. Increasing bias training for the FSF’s full network including mentors, partners, and educators, with inclusive trainings and conversations.

2. Designing more business-centered programming and messaging to attract more diverse talent into senior leadership and C-suite pipelines within the fashion industry.

3. Creating mini-competitions, showcase opportunities, and professional resources for exceptionally talented underrepresented students seeking to enter the field of fashion.

Equity was a key pillar of the FSF’s Board-led strategic planning in 2023. In December 2023, the FSF Board of Governors ratified a new vision statement and set of recommended program strategies to further diversify and build equity in the fashion industry’s talent pipeline. Exciting new pilot programs leveraging the FSF’s core strengths, including its deep industry partnerships, will build upon the FSF’s priorities and inform our overall strategic vision starting in 2024.

FSF VIRTUAL CAMPUS VISITS

In April of 2023, FSF Ambassadors (including Board Members, mentors, and Alumni) hosted a Virtual Campus Visit that welcomed prospective 2024 FSF Scholarship Competition applicants from our 72 partner schools across the country. Over 500 students attended—the virtual format allowed us to connect with many more students than the on-campus FSF Ambassador presentations of the past.

Virtual presentation speakers included: Jeremy Kalteux , 2019 and 2020 Scholar from University of Georgia, currently the Design Associate, Licensing at Ralph Lauren; Amira Linson, 2022 and 2023 Virgil Abloh “Post-Modern” Scholar from University of North Texas; Danielle Testa , 2008 FSF Scholar from Iowa State University, Fashion Retail Consultant and Assistant Professor at Arizona State University and FSF Case Study Author; and Meghan Willis, FSF Board Member and VP of Product Development, Apparel & Accessories at Under Armour. The recorded versions of the presentations are currently available on the FSF site as a helpful resource for 2023 FSF Case Study applicants.

In order to prepare the Class of 2024 Scholar applicants to succeed in the 2024 Case Study Competition, the FSF hosted multiple virtual “Case Study Q&A” sessions where applicants were given the opportunity to connect directly with FSF Alumni and learn about the steps they took to win an FSF Scholarship. Over 100 members of the Alumni community volunteered as Case Study mentors, helping applicants with their submissions and providing support throughout the rigorous process.

The Fashion Scholarship Fund provides an equity-minded program for students interested in the fashion industry. Through webinars featuring leading figures across fashion-related fields and engagement with pertinent case studies, students gain valuable career insights.”

2023 Community College Scholarships

Community college students are often more racially and socioeconomically diverse than those at private and public fouryear schools. While these students are often motivated to acquire career skills and centered in urban areas—facilitating connections with employers—they are usually underrepresented in corporate internships, workforces, and leadership tracks.

In 2023 and thanks to continued support from THE VF FOUNDATION , FSF expanded a community-college pilot program launched in 2021, helping to facilitate a more inclusive and equitable fashion-talent pipeline.

The FSF Community College Initiative provided the opportunity for 14 Scholars from two-year colleges to participate in custom-designed career awareness experiences including special one-on-one mentors, an all-expense-paid three-day job-shadow experience in New York City (featuring visits to G-III and LEVI’S), access to the FSF’s educational programming, and more.

The FSF Community Colleges Initiative year-two cohort comprised 14 Scholars from five colleges: El Camino College and Saddleback College (CA), Hocking College (OH), and Hostos Community College and Bronx Community College (Bronx, NY).

In September 2023, THE VF FOUNDATION created a new grant to double the size of the cohort in 2024 and to make the program bicoastal. The summer job-shadow experience, for the first time, will take place both in NYC and San Francisco.

81% OF FSF CLASS OF 2023 COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARS WERE BIPOC

TRUE RELIGION partnered with the FSF to fund a Community College Bridge Scholarship of $5,000 to support one second-year student enrolled in a two-year community college who aspires to matriculate at a four-year university in pursuit of a career in a fashion-related field.

In 2023, the COACH FOUNDATION also funded three additional Community College “Dream It Real” Scholars.

The group of students represented diverse cultures and races, creating a fun, inclusive atmosphere. We were all hungry to learn but, above all, we shared goals and the willingness to utilize this opportunity as a stepping stone toward achieving them.”

Partners and Supporters

IN JANUARY, AND THANKS TO THE INVESTMENT OF A RECORD NUMBER OF CORPORATE PARTNERS, FSF ANNOUNCED IT HAD AWARDED $1.1+ MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING TO THE 127 MEMBERS OF ITS CLASS OF 2023 SCHOLARS, AS WELL AS 14 COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARS. FSF’s partners not only provided scholarship funding—they enriched our Scholars’ experiences by providing mentorship, special educational and social events, job-shadowing opportunities, and connections to internships and employment.

We are pleased to share the partnership highlights below and are grateful to all FSF supporters for their meaningful impact on our Scholars’ lives.

In February, NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP announced their first cohort of NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP x FSF SCHOLARS, awarding $10,000 each to these 10 Scholars who demonstrated talent in and commitment to advancing sustainable and ethical fashion through their Case Studies: Mallory Butts of Spelman College, Mia DeMeola of Fordham University, Lyla Duffy of Thomas Jefferson University, Amaryllis Dunklee of The University of Texas at Austin, Isabella Kostrzewa of Parsons School of Design, Megan Lenzi of Iowa State University, Rachel Slesnick of The Ohio State University, Lei Xiang of Parsons School of Design, Hazel Anne Ycasiano of George Brown College, and Britney Zhang of University of California, Berkeley.

The Scholars were dressed by NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP for the 2023 FSF LIVE Gala, so that they would look and feel their best for the celebratory event. The NEIMAN MARCUS SCHOLARSHIPS—originally funded by a 2022 point-of-sale activation that raised $125,000 during Women’s History Month and Earth Month—were renewed in the fall. The second cohort of NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP x FSF SCHOLARS were announced in January 2024. The Scholarships support NMG efforts to advance sustainable products and services as part of their 2025 ESG strategy.

The new NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP x FSF SCHOLARS were celebrated by NASDAQ with a sizzle reel on the NASDAQ big screen at Times Square in March. Later that month, NEIMAN MARCUS hosted a panel for FSF Scholars and Alumni in celebration of Women’s History Month at NEIMAN MARCUS Short Hills, featuring Jodi Kahn, VP of Luxury Fashion, NMG; Veronica Swanson Beard and Veronica Miele Beard of VERONICA BEARD—as well as 2023 NEIMAN MARCUS GROUP x FSF SCHOLAR, Mia DeMeola.

Throughout 2023, the six 2023 NORDSTROM MADE SCHOLARS participated in a year-long mentorship program with more than 20 NORDSTROM leaders across several departments and enjoyed hands-on experiences aimed to develop relevant career skills. Separately, NORDSTROM treated its six 2023 NORDSTROM MADE SCHOLARS to a special styling experience, creating a head-to-toe look for each for the FSF LIVE Gala that evening.

Mentoring Programs

SCHOLARS

The FSF is committed to fostering the next generation of fashion talent through its signature Mentoring Program. Of the 127 Class of 2023 Scholars, over 100 were matched one-on-one with an industry mentor according to discipline, job function, geographic location, company, and alma mater. The benefits of the mentoring pairings were invaluable for both Scholars and mentors.

ALUMNI

Thanks to renewed support from THE VF FOUNDATION , the FSF Alumni Mentoring Initiative continues to be a vital network for promising graduates from underrepresented backgrounds. The Initiative launched in September of 2020 and provides support to FSF Alumni for one to three years out of college.

Additional funding for the FSF Alumni Mentoring Initiative was provided by a generous multi-year grant from THE HEARST FOUNDATION, INC.

MENTORS

The FSF mentoring community is a diverse group of creative and business professionals and includes mid-level to C-suite executives from companies within the FSF network of partners and supporters.

One-third of FSF mentors are also FSF Alumni—previous FSF Scholarship recipients. FSF Alumni find the opportunity to give back to Scholars both rewarding and a leadership-development opportunity. Near-peer support from a mentor who enjoys a common background or experience with their mentee, such as race/ethnicity or firstgeneration to college status, is of particular importance.

If you’re interested in mentoring the next generation of fashion, email FSFPROGRAMS@FASHIONSCHOLARSHIPFUND.ORG

2023 Summer Scholar Series

The FSF Summer Scholar Series consisted of 10 weeks of robust virtual programming, training, and events. The series was comprised of weekly sessions that included Workforce Preparedness Courses and Master Classes.

FSF’s Workforce Preparedness Courses focused on specific topics and skills that Scholars might not be learning in school, in order to better prepare them for a career in the fashion industry. Certain sessions also provided potential applicants for the 2024 FSF Case Study Competition with the opportunity to learn more about the Competition and the four Case Study prompts.

In addition, FSF offered Master Class sessions. These informative sessions allowed Scholars, Scholar applicants, and Alumni to hear from industry experts about their professional journeys and the challenges they’ve faced within the industry.

The Fashion Scholarship Fund offered a Certificate of Completion to those who attended 4+ Workforce Preparedness Courses and 3+ Master Class sessions over the course of the Summer Scholar Series. Over 100 attendees were awarded a Certificate of Completion.

To kick off the 2023 FSF Summer Scholar Series, the FSF community came together to connect, celebrate, and network at a cocktail event held on WHP GLOBAL’S beautiful terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue in New York City.
