Approximately 40 000 people attended the public event showcasing over a 100 floats and groups down 8th AVE S, also known as Stephen Avenue. The parade brings families, children, and community supports to a celebration of life, full of fun, colour and music for all to enjoy. Calgary’s pride parade attracts not only spectators from Calgary and the province of Alberta but visitors from all over the country. Amanda Martens, a first-time attendee of the parade, enjoyed the power and support the community event shows. “It was emotionally exciting to see the strength seen throughout the parade,” Martens said.

“Seeing all the young families with their young children really allowed me to understand the great generational change we are seeing today in equal rights for everyone in our society.”

“It was great to see the community of Calgary come together to relax, enjoy the weather and the great entertainment that was being showcased,” said Alex August, first-time event attendee.

Marten’s made the long drive from Saskatchewan to be apart of this annual event.

“Seeing all the people enjoying their respected areas really showed how this event and festival brings the whole community of Calgary together.

“Coming from a small city, it honours me to be able to show my support for friends and community in which they are apart of. Love is love, but a little education for anybody never hurt.”

hursday, September 18, saw the opening gala of the Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) -- a festival that has become world famous and has been voted one of the top 25 film festivals in the world to attend. The festival, which saw 8,000 people attend when it first started in 2000, has grown significantly. Within three years, attendance tripled to 25,000 and today approximately 30,000 people attend the 11-day showcase of over 200 multi-genre films from Canada and over 40 other countries. This year’s gala was held at the Jubilee Auditorium for the screening of Academy Award-winning producer and director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s magical 3D comedy The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet. The movie also featured famous Hollywood actress Helena Bonham Carter, who unfortunately was not present at the screening. The movie was partly filmed in Alberta and Washington D.C. This charming movie tells the story of a 10-yearold boy played by Kyle Catlett, who has a passion for cartography and scientific inventions. He lives on his family’s ranch in Montana with his parents, twin brother and eccentric sister.

Based on his passion, T.S. Spivet invents a perpetual motion machine which wins him a notable award. He makes the journey out from Montana to Washington D.C. without telling anyone to receive an award at the Smithsonian Institute. Within the colorful layers of humor and heartbreak shown in this movie by Jeunet’s magical powers of visual storytelling, there lies an underlying message of the oppressive cultural tendencies that most Americans face.

embers of the FASHIONSIGN Ezine team are still on cloud 9 after attending the PARKLUXE fashion and art show on Oct 4th, 2014 in East Village of Calgary. We can’t say enough about the set up! Outside there were purple, pink and green lights shining on foliage and the beautiful cars provided by Lexus of Royal Oak. The night started with music by DJ Henry Mah while beverages and sweet hors’ d’oeuvres were served. To say the least, the crowd was buzzing with excitement by the time the artists and their installations were presented. The two artists featured were Natlie Lauchlan and Dayna Ellen.

Malorie Urbanovitch opened the second show with some plaid knit and alpaca knit items. Next, Paul Hardy got the crowd excited with merino wool, leather and Scottish wool. Matthew Gallagher closed the show with chiffon, cashmere and satin. The pieces at the show were stunning, as were the models -- all from Sophia International Model Agency along with (with other agencies ?) What an experience! Again, this event was proof that our city, and our country, is filled with talent and creativity. A big thank you to the PARK employees for their hard work and hospitality. •

Calgary is a friendly city, it goes without saying. As not only was this an event showcasing our city’s finest, but it was also about giving back – money raised went towards supporting the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

n the evening of Thursday, November 6, Calgary’s cultural awareness came alive with fashionistas and artists alike gathering for the much-anticipated Calgary Fashion Portrait Campaign, which was held, fittingly, at the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts.

The venue was impeccable. From the lighting to the table arrangements, one could tell that thought had been put into every detail, making sure nothing was out of place. The room was a winter wonderland of mini lights popping from corners and white snow-covered branches dancing at the entranceways. The second floor was where the real treasure lay, as 25 portraits were displayed along one narrow hall, highlighting talented musicians, politicians and artists alike, each with their own unique messages attached to their portraits. There was no shortage of visual appeal at this event.

I challenge anyone who has said that Calgary’s arts and culture scene is nonexistent to have been in attendance on Thursday. One might say that the ambiance was that of a highly acclaimed event in New York City or Montreal - two culturally rich metropolises.

The event has grown from an elegant gathering in its first year to a signature event in the years to follow. Upon entering the venue, guests were greeted with a glass of bubbly champagne and

enjoyed classical jazz music. Some of Calgary’s finest restaurants were catering mouthwatering appetizers, and in good Calgary form, guests mingled amongst the food as new introductions were made and new friendships formed.

Huge congratulations to Ania and Rafal for once again successfully reminding Calgarians that culture does exist in our city, and for taking the time to celebrate our talents. The year’s portrait campaign was a memorable success, only paving the way for future successes down the road. • INTERIOR VIEW OF THE VENUE

ith the first successful launch of their new artist exposition and trade show, Behind the Curtain did it again with even more excitement, artists and traffic. This semi-annual event has provided all visual and performing artists within the Calgary community a networking outlet to showcase their works, while establishing relationships with new clientele. “Even though this was only the second showing, we can all see how the popularity of the event is already on a climb,” said Daiana Sioui, founder and organizer of Behind the Curtain.

“All the tables for the trade show were sold out very quickly and this provided a large variety of different works for attendees to view and shop through.”

Over eleven artistic outlets were showcased throughout the wholeday event with more then 250 public and VIP visitors taking in all that was provided to them.

“It was great seeing the numerous amount of acts and different niches that we have in our city. “I think most people have a shallow conditioning of who and what an artist is and Behind the Curtain helps expands people’s knowledge to what the art community has to offer here.”

FASHIONSIGN EZINE

Other performances were provided by Trip the Light Dance and Performance Company and singer Lauren Mayell through the day. It was important for Sioui to showcase and allow the attendees to see the expansive range of talent within the city of Calgary.

IMPACT

Throughout the day, fashion runway shows allowed attendees to sit down with a glass of wine or beverage of choice and watch the spectacular talent emerging from the city’s designers. After the shows featuring Jennifer Maslak Costumes and Personalize It Fashion, a tribute show was held in memoriam for the talented local clothing designer Ruby Ellen who passed away suddenly, shortly after the first Behind the Curtain event earlier this year.

Like the last Behind the Curtain exposition and trade show, RainCatchers Canada was the main charity in attendance at that event, fundraising and networking for their cause of a clean and sustainable supply of water for all people in Canada. Sioui was proud to share that another charity joined the event this time around. Four Feet Companion Foundation was also in attendance creating awareness and funds for the well-being and welfare of companion animals. “We as artists hold much passion in our hearts for the things we support and love. If we can bring people together to come out and support our works, it was obvious to involve and help our non-for-profit organizations in Canada too.” As Behind the Curtain continues to grow on the success of the last two shows, it is already in the process of launching the next new, bigger and better show in mid-2015. PERSONALIZED IT FASHION

“We can see this getting bigger every time we host it. This very apparent already,” Sioui said. “2015’s lineup is going to be amazing and we are so excited to bring that again to the public to showcase the ever-soevolving art community in Calgary.” •

‘Twas the Night was organized to celebrate the holiday season and kick-off holiday shopping with special Black Friday sales and promotions. In good holiday spirit, the night collected donations to support the YMCA of Calgary.

The night’s main events featured the lighting of the Core’s incredible 45foot Christmas tree, hourly draws, live jazz, showing of the Nutcracker on big screens by immensely talented Alberta

Holt Renfrew also had some amazing deals. With 80 per cent off shoe sales, and 50 per cent off women’s clothing, nothing was left untouched as the evening rolled to a close and ‘Twas the Night shoppers left with a handful of bags. I love seeing Calgary get into the Christmas spirit each year, and much like previous years, ‘Twas the Night at the Core was an incredible success.•

The event hosted an exclusive one-ofa-kind performance from the incredibly talented, Juno nominated artist and Canadian jazz crooner, Matt Dusk. The performance, along with the holiday sales all throughout the mall, had me walking the red carpet like a celebrity with eTalk host Tanya Kim, as I eyed everyone basking in the Christmas spirit while they crossed items off of their holiday wish list.

Holt Renfrew and H&M were two stores not to be missed, as celebrity style blogger, Becky Kung of Velvet and Vino greeted guests by taking a “selfie” with them and then entering their names into a draw where they could win $200 of merchandise from H&M. She also labeled certain items in the store as her “picks” and “must have” items. The store was a bustle of eager shoppers and children alike.

London, England born, world-renowned violinist, Australian Sophie Serafino, has chosen the great city of Calgary to call home and launch her successes around the globe. “The opportunity to debut the music I’ve been creating over the last two years is an incredibly exciting time for me,” Serafino said. “It’s been an incredible journey living in Canada the last three years, and everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.” Serafino’s entrancing sound will take her on an international tour across North America where she will “debut her first feature-length concert in Canada in celebration of her two new albums – ‘Temptress’ and ‘Touch’, presented by Audi Royal Oak of Calgary.”

“Touch’ is a highly emotive delicious mix of adult pop that mixes vocals with Serafino’s signature violin style,” said in a national press release. “It describes her real life journey of love, betrayal, disappointment and devastation to the re-ignition of hope.” Canada boosts a highly artistic and dynamically original community network across the country that gives all artists an outlet of success. “I cannot wait to introduce the two new albums and a feature concert to my fans and perform across Canada,” Serafino proudly said. • For full concert schedules: www.sophieserafino.com
