FAShair Nicole Lah spoke with hair sage Kim Kimble for tips to maintain healthy hair for any season. Kimble’s clientele includes stars such as Beyoncé, Shakira, Kerry Washington and Vanessa Williams, to name a few. The celebrity stylist reveals the must-have products that no woman should be without.

SO, WHAT COMPELLED YOU TO BECOME A HAIR STYLIST? WERE YOU IN STARBUCKS AND HAD AN EPIPHANY? Well, I started working as an assistant in the salon where my mother and grandmother worked at a young age and am a third generation hairstylist. Initially, I wanted to be a fashion designer and thought I would do hair to work my way through fashion school, but when I was in beauty school working on a client, I could see the transformation from drab to fab, and when I realized that I could change the way people see themselves, I was hooked. I was also very inspired going to the hair shows and seeing the incredible looks that the stylists created.

WHAT IS A HUGE ‘NO-NO’ THAT EVERY HAIR STYLIST SHOULD KNOW NOT TO PERFORM ON CLIENTS AND WHY? Never apply too many chemicals to the hair in one day, and never do color on a first time client without a patch test or a strand test. You can cause extreme damage to their hair.

WHAT’S A GOOD HAIR TIP SPECIFICALLY FOR FALL/WINTER THAT APPLIES TO ALL HAIR TYPES AND ETHNICITIES. No matter what the season, you can keep your hair healthy and shiny with regular conditioning treatments. Hot oil treatments and deep conditioners or conditioning masks (such as Kimble Hair Care Systems Honey and Oatmeal Moisturizing Treatment) are great for keeping the hair moisturized.

HOW DO YOU CARE FOR YOUR HAIR? WHAT’S A MUST-HAVE PRODUCT? When I’m wearing extensions, I use Kimble Hair Care Systems Untangle Shampoo and Conditioner to keep my hair untangled. I use Kimble Hair Care Systems Scalp Treatment to keep my scalp from itching. I also sleep wearing a silk bonnet each night to protect my hair.

MARGO!

WHO’S THAT GIRL?

INTERVIEW Victor Acevedo ARTICLE Nicole Lah PHOTO Nicole Lah

WHEN GOING TO SEE CANADIAN-BRED POP/ELECTRO SINGER MARGO PERFORM live, to say that you’re in for a treat is an understatement. As she performs at the Green Door in Hollywood on a chilly night, hues of blue, pink and red light up the stage like aerial votives. The funky songstress stands tall at about 5’10. With a cool downward stroke, she strums her guitar along with her band and begins the introduction to her set. Just behind Margo are TV monitors displaying a montage of her music videos, art work and other creative imagery. “The images go with the music,” she reveals. The goal is to evoke a mood with the imagery as well as with the song. She performs, “Cold As Ice,” “Picture Frame,” and “I Call the Shots” with electrifying energy and charisma. After her set, I sit down with Margo in the VIP section, and our i n te r v i e w begins. Now that she’s right in front of me, I get a better visual of I WANT PEOPLE TO LEAVE MY SET SAYING, the detail of the buttons on her denim jacket and notice that she has not one, but multiple streaks in shades of the rainbow in her hair. We begin talk- ‘WHOA, THAT WAS A GOOD *$!@ING SHOW!’ ing about art and transition into music. Margo’s eclectic musical style is as unique as her taste in art. “For me, I love great art!” she exclaims. “Michelle Bassia [for instance] is amazing! I love him just because he was NY (New York) when NY was cool, and it was fly and he had the cool paintings. He’s not just a Black artist. You wouldn’t go, ‘He was a dope Black artist,’ you’d look at him and say, ‘He was a dope artist!’ Just seeing how hard he worked... That’s what I love about him.” Margo’s great love for art explains her passion for music. Margo’s daily routine includes listening to D’Angelo in the morning, practicing her guitar, and recording. “I love D’Angelo for a run. Not necessarily for how I look – that’s secondary – but I’m never out of breath when I’m on stage. I love the early morning because there’s so much potential for a day.” She practices guitar for four hours each day. In her spare time, she heads to the studio to record. Margo describes her music as a mix between a live show and a ‘radio friendly’ record. “It’s popular,” she explains. “It sounds like a good live show but can still be on the radio.” She wants her fans to leave her show feeling amped, like they got their money’s worth. “I want them to be able to hear what I’m saying, and when they leave say, “Whoa, that was a good f***ing show!” She writes most of her own material, and collaborates with her longtime partner, Nikko Smith on songs as well. “When I have a vision and an idea of a song, my band knows how to put it all together. I write the majority of my material, but sometimes my partner Nikko writes for me. Actually, he’s a better writer than me. We’re a good match because he knows me. I call him my Quincy [Jones]. (Laughs) Michael Jackson wouldn’t have been Michael Jackson without Quincy. I’m sure James Brown didn’t know he was inspiring Michael Jackson,” she says with her head slightly tilted and a look of certainty. The music/fashion rebel pegs Prince and Dale Bozzio as her inspiration. “I love Prince but I also wanna know, ‘Who inspired Prince?’ I love Gwen Stefani but I’ve always wanted to know who inspired her. So, when I look at the missing person not given credit in pop [music/culture], it’s Gale Bosio! She’s the original chick! Just like she inspired pop culture, I want to inspire people. My goal in life is for a young girl to come up to me one day and say, ‘I want to play guitar because of you! I want to write because of you!’ How can you inspire other people to wanna be great? I want to make history!” Margo exclaims as if she’s the leader of a peace rally. She continues, closing saying, “I want to be a part of popular culture.” With the drive, talent and flamboyant personality of yours Margo, we’re sure you will. S FASlife MAGAZINE FALL 2010 PAGE 40
