Special Feature The World Bank pointed out in its 2019 Global Economic Forecast that the economic growth rate of Latin America & the Caribbean region reached 0.6% in 2018 and may climb to 1.7% in 2019 and may increase further to 2.5% in 2021. Though influenced by the global economy, according to the World Bank, the forecast economic growth rates of Brazil, Chile and Paraguay in the full year of 2019 will be respectively 2.2%, 3.5% and 3.9% due to increasing consumption and investment in Latin America. MERCOSUR consisting of countries in South America is the 5th largest economy right after the EU. After a very long period of negotiation, it has made its trade deal with the EU this year. The trade deal is very significant to industries including cars, auto parts, machines, etc., as the deal will force MERCOSUR to cancel a majority of tariffs currently imposed on products imported from the EU and save at least USD 4.5 billion import cost. MERCOSUR even has announced in 2019 that it is planning to issue a new currency for all member countries in order to create a more open market in South America. Countries in the South American market are not only seeking opportunities for integration and collaboration with each other, but will also invite representatives from Russia, India, China and South Africa to participate in the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in Brasilia, Brazil on Nov. 13-14 to facilitate technical innovation integration and digital economy. In 2018, these countries have already expressed their firm opposition to trade protectionism, so it is expected that after the Summit a closer trade relationship amongst these countries will be established.

SC Ralhan, Managing Director, Sri Tools Pvt Ltd and Kamna Raj Aggarwalla, Managing Director, GDPA Fasteners, shared the dais.
The official also pointed out that the subsidiary firm will supplant Sundram Fasteners business in space vehicles and helicopter components. He further said that the union government’s new Defense Procurement Policy gave a window of opportunity for manufacturing firms to explore this. Union minister for Finance Arun Jaitley in the 2018 budget had announced the setup of two defense industrial production corridors to boost domestic manufacturing. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh were shortlisted. While the Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor was launched at Aligarh in August 2018 at an investment of 3,732 crores, the defense corridor in Tamil Nadu was inaugurated by Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in January 2019 at an announced investment of 3,038 crores.
Speaking on the occasion, Pandey said, “We are passing through a challenging but an opportune time. Indian exports were around INR330 billion last year. Out of this, INR210 billion were from the service sector and were considered to be the highest of all times.” Aggarwalla stressed upon the importance of capitalizing the in-built strength rather than following the western concept of innovations. Ralhan spoke on the challenges India faces from the rules and regulations in exports as against other nations. He said that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was India’s biggest hindrance at the global level. Emerging Fastener Markets no.8/2019

Swiss "invisMX" Invisible Magnetic Screws
瑞士invisMX磁性隱形螺絲
Screws are a common component. Fastening screws onto an object will inevitably leave the screw head on the connecting part of the surfaces and undermine visual appearance. In light of this, a Swiss company invented an invisible magnetic screw which leaves no screw marks when used to fasten objects. This screw is named invisMX magnetic invisible screw, and it has a strong bearing capability to a maximum of 400 kilograms. The screw was invented by Lamello AG Joining Technology from Switzerland. It can stay hidden and fasten the internal part of objects. It is somewhat similar to the mortise and tenon in Chinese building structures but simpler and more convenient. All that is needed is to punch a small hole on the wood, install the screw into the hole on one end of the wood, and drive in the nut on the other end, utilizing connection of two pieces of wood and a magnetic tool to fasten the screw and nut. This is all done by utilizing unique magnetic attraction repulsion. The removal of the screw is very convenient, and all that it takes is to use related magnetic tools which will remove the screw within seconds. The screw can make wood connection very firm and has a strong grip with the torsion force reaching 160 kilograms. It is currently applied to the process of furniture production. New Simpson Strong-Tie® SDWS Timber SS Screw Provides Durability and Efficiency 美國Simpson StrongTie®發表全新耐用高效 SDWS 木用不銹鋼螺絲
The WSTS Truss/Stud Screw is tested in accordance with ICC-ES AC233 and AC13, and meets 2015 and 2018 IRC and IBC code requirements. The WSTS Truss/Stud Screw offers a “reverse thread angle” on opposite ends of the screw for greater resistance to withdrawal. The WSTS Truss/Stud Screw is fully threaded along its length for installation flexibility. The head of the screw is designed to countersink when driven, so the screw is taken out of the way of finishing materials like drywall and trim. A Type-17 screw point engages the wood quickly for easier starting and driving of the screw. The WSTS Truss/Stud Screw package includes an installation a n g le t o ol t h a t m a k e s p r o p e r installations easier. The installation angle tool is also removable so the bit can be used with or without the device. The screw comes in two lengths: 4½ inch length for stud-to-bottom plate connections, and 6 inch length for connections through the double top plate.
Simpson Strong-Tie, the leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, announced the official launch of the Strong-Drive SDWS Timber SS Type 316 stainless-steel structural screw, a premium solution for construction and repair of coastal piers, boardwalks, docks and other projects that require structural fastening in extreme saltwater environments. The SDWS Timber SS prototype was specified and successfully field-tested as the primary pier-board fastener for the $8.7 million modernization of the Pismo Beach Pier. At 1,200 feet long, the Pismo Pier is the 18th longest in California and had several sections that had not been replaced since the pier was constructed in 1928. To ensure that the Pismo Pier project could meet budget and scheduling requirements while providing the structural durability to last many more decades, Morro Bay, CA–based Shoreline Engineering turned to Simpson Strong-Tie for fasteners that were corrosion resistant and easy to install. Available in 3", 4", 5", 6", 8", 10" and 12" lengths, the SDWS Timber SS features a patented SawTooth™ point to eliminate the predrilling and counterboring required by lag screws while providing greater load ratings than spikes without nail-pops and their associated tripping hazards. T he SDWS Timber SS 316 stai n less-steel st r uct u ral screw complements the Strong-Drive® family of fasteners and is anticipated to provide a broad range of fastener solutions for coastal pier, boardwalk and ledger applications where a flat, flush washer head is advantageous.

Japanese LOBTEX Rolls out Non-slipping Hexagonal Wrench Package Suited for Inclined Wrench Insertion 日本LOBTEX推出在傾斜作業環境中也不會滑脫的套裝六角扳手 LOBTEX launched sales of BWM9S ball-end hexagonal wrenches that prevents slipping when they are inserted at an inclined angle. Ball-end hexagonal wrenches conveniently allow users to insert at an angle into the hexagonal bolt hole, but in a high-torque application they would easily slip off from the hole. Therefore, LOBTEX increased the area of contact with the bolt hole and came up with a wrench shape that prevents slipping. Features: (1) Special shape design: Preventing slipping for perpendicular, or 20-degree inclined wrench insertion. (2) Best suited for fastening bolts in a tight or innermost area. (3) The red holder of the wrenches is foldable, allowing for convenient fetching and storage.
Japanese Kamiyama Tekkosho Develops a Test Device Analyzing Self-drilling Screw Performance 日本神山鐵工所開發實驗裝置 分析自鑽螺絲的切削性能 Kamiyama Tekkosho developed the self-drilling screw fastening test device called "SCR-19S" with an aim to reduce the required time of fastening selfdrilling screws by 50%. The company is currently using the device for trial tests and it expects to develop a new type of self-drilling screws by 2020. The common way to test self-drilling screws is to improve the drilling tip and then measure the time required for the self-drilling screw to fasten onto test materials. The way that the new device takes is to use sensors to measure the number of rotation of the screw as well as the force applied to the screw's a xial a nd per pendicula r direction, and then use the new acquired data to improve drill tip design. K a m i ya m a Te k ko s h o's "Uni-point" construction selfdrilling screws drill into iron plates without the need for pre-drilling holes. The new screw design is expected to further improve Uni-point.

Industry Focus 2018東盟扣件貿易剖析
ASEAN Fastener Trade Statistics in 2018 by Shervin Shahidi Hamedani
ASEAN Economy – Overview Based on a report published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the gross domestic product (GDP) in emerging Asia is projected to grow by an annual average of 6.1% between 2019 to 2023. The domestic demand is estimated to keep its strength, mainly in household spending, as job markets are expected to remain vibrant. However, trade is facing more uncertain prospects as tariff measures broaden. Southeast Asia is estimated to carry on its growth by 5.2% until 2023, faster than the rate registered between 2012 to 2016. In 2018, the estimated total GDP of all ASEAN states amounted to approximately 2.92 trillion U.S. dollars, a significant increase from the previous years. GDP Growth Country

Indonesia Malaysia Philippines Thailand Vietnam Brunei Darussalam Singapore Cambodia Lao PDR Myanmar
5.2 4.9 6.4 4.5 6.9 2.0 3.5 7.0 6.6 6.6
5.2 4.8 6.5 4.1 6.7 2.3 2.9 6.9 6.8 6.9
2019-2023 (Average) 5.3 4.6 6.6 3.7 6.5 2.0 2.7 6.9 7.0 7.0
2012-2016 (Average) 5.3 5.1 6.6 3.4 5.9 -1.3 3.5 7.1 7.6 7.3
As stated in the above table, Indonesia’s GDP is projected to grow with the average of 5.3%, in the next few years, the same rate as in 2012-2016. Considering the lively health of the labour market, the private consumption should expand strongly. The GDP of Malaysia is estimated to rise by 4.6% in 2019-2023, slower than the growth in 2012-16, while private consumption will still remain strong. The Philippines' medium-term growth is estimated to reach 6.6%, similar to what this country reached between 2012 to 2016. The underemployment rate, which has recently risen again, despite the decline in the labour participation rate, requires attention. Thailand’s GDP is estimated to grow 3.7% a year, up from 3.4% in 2012-2016. The effective implementation of an East Economic Corridor (EEC) infrastructure under the scheme of Thailand 4.0 will be vital to continuing this growth. Vietnam’s exports are expected to continue to play its important role in the country’s economy, supported by the growth of foreign
direct investment (FDI). Therefore, Vietnam’s GDP is forecast to increase by 0.6% to reach 6.5% on average in 2019-2023. Brunei Darussalam’s GDP is expected to grow annually by 2.0% from 2019-2023, recovering from the average of -1.3% in 2012-2016, mainly because of the oil price fluctuations. Singapore is projected to record 2.7% GDP annual growth in the next few years, lower than its average of 3.5% in 2012-2016. Fixed investment is projected to grow in line with various infrastructure plans in this country. Cambodia’s economy is projected to expand by 6.9% in the next four years until 2023, marginally lower than the 7.1% growth in 2012-2016. The firm growth of foreign capital and the country’s involvement in multilateral infrastructure projects fit well with infrastructure, exports and the job market. Lao PDR’s GDP is estimated to post 7.0% annually in 2019-2023 and will go down from 7.6% recorded in 2012-2016. The growth is largely supported by country’s deals in energy and economic. Myanmar’s economy is projected to reach 7.0% growth annually in 2019-2023, slightly lower than its growth in 2012-2016 at 7.3%. The growth is backed by country’s development in investment and liberalisation.
ASEAN Fasteners The trade performance of ASEAN countries is relatively stable and FDI inflows remain positive. ASEAN has developed and has been recognized as one of the major regions to produce and export industrial fasteners regionally and globally supported by the presence of several small and medium scale players. Industrial players are investing in R&D and production of a range of fasteners from standard to specialty fasteners in order to cater to applicationspecific demand by end users and to keep up with the extremely competitive market. The market is undertaking evolution from manufacturing standard metal products to producing superior quality and specialty fasteners to meet the increasing demand for application-specific products. As illustrated in the following chart, the total fastener exports value in ASEAN was more than USD 2 billion which was about 5% of the total global exports value in 2018. Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia are the top fastener exporters within ASEAN countries, and recorded about USD 1.1 billion worth of exports in 2018. Thailand exported more than USD 600 million of fasteners last year, followed by Vietnam with about USD 520 million and Singapore with slightly less than USD 330 million.

The major destinations for Thailand’s exports are the US, India, Indonesia, Japan and Germany recording almost 50% of the total export value. Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, UK and Belgium are the main importers of Vietnam’s fasteners. Singapore exports fasteners mainly to its neighbours, including, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Philippines. Similarly, Malaysia has shipped most of its fasteners to Singapore and Thailand. Other countries importing Malaysian fasteners, are Germany, China and the Netherlands. In terms of imports, Thailand is still the largest market within ASEAN countries, with more than one billion US dollar imports in 2018. Japan, China and Taiwan are the largest fastener exporters to Thai market. Within ASEAN countries, the second largest import market is Indonesia with the total value of USD 674 million in 2018. Last year, Japan, China, Singapore and Thailand were top fastener exporters to
Indonesia. Singapore imported more than USD 420 million worth of fasteners mainly from China, the U.S., Malaysia, Taiwan and Japan. Growth estimates in the near and medium term are beneficial and favourable for emerging Asia as well as ASEAN. If countries in this region are to keep their healthy growth momentum however, appropriate policies are required to increase the business opportunities, mitigate the risks of investments and strengthen fastener exports performance. Within ASEAN countries, Singapore is leading the way in raising capital, market penetration and degree of sophistication while other countries are slowly catching up and opening up their markets for new investments and technologies.

Global Car Brands Sale Statistics for the First Half of 2019 2019上半年全球汽車品牌銷售統計
A
nother article titled “Major Car Manufacturing Countries Face Bottlenecks, While Emerging Countries Show Eye-Catching Growth Margins” in Hardware & Fastener Components Magazine (Aug. 2019 Issue, No. 8) cited car production figures from OICA, and concluded with the finding that the major car manufacturing countries in the world has met with a predicament in manufacturing output in 2018. Here, we are citing figures of brand sales from Focus2move, an online automotive data collector sourcing sales figures from over 300 different local suppliers, and we are diving into the car sales and market share of each brand to get the big picture of what was going on in the first half of 2019.

2018 (Fullyear) Sales
A Dim First Half of 2019 in Brand Sales
O
n first sight of the table above, we are already seeing 22 out of 25 car brands record plummeting sales in the first half of 2019, with one-third of the brands having double-digit decline. That is 88% negative sales growth recorded in 25 car brands and obviously a bad omen for the full-year performance. Looking at the market shares, we find the variation between 2018 and H1 2019 for each of the car brands falls within the 1% margin of error. This tells the current market shares of these brands remain roughly consistent with the past year and that not much has changed in the world map of major car brands. But one thing is for sure: Despite very little change in the market shares of major brands, almost every brand had plummeted in sales and the largest drop was recorded for Peugeot, Geely, and Changan, with only Toyota and Honda having a growth of less than 2%.
Brand Sales for the Current Year Could Fail to Reach the 2018 Level?
O
n car sales, the chart topper of the first half of 2019 remains to be Toyota which ruled the chart of 2018. Last year Toyota’s annual sales broke the 8.8 million mark, which was 1.95 million vehicles (and a large gap) away from Volkswagen at the 2nd place and greatly preceded Ford (3rd), Honda (4th) and Nissan (5th) at the 5 million mark. This trend remains pretty much alike in the first half of 2019, with Toyota’s sales surpassing Volkswagen’s by a gap of around 1.17 million and preceding the sales of the 3rd to 5th places by a large gap of over 1.87 million.
H
owever, comparing the sales figures between the first half of 2019 and the whole 2018, we would find the 6-month (2019) rolling sales of the top 25 brands barely reached half of the 2018 sales records, except for BMW. This denotes that if the global trade sentiment in the second half of this year remains unchanged, we cannot rule out the possibility of car brand sales for the whole 2019 failing to reach half of the 2018 level. Brand sales for the whole current year are somewhat worrisome.
Observation is Required to See How the Predicament Can be Unravelled
I
nternational trade conflicts are one of the current biggest issues the automotive industry is facing. With the threatening tariff cast upon imported cars as well as the large consumption of their materials, automakers have no options but to take on and adapt to the tariff imposed on imported aluminum and steel. According to overseas media, Ford and General Motors said they had an additional tariffdriven cost of USD 1 billion last year. The tariff coming from trade conflicts could not only impact carmakers’ capacity but also affect the sales of new cars. Perhaps for carmakers, their anticipated solution to the zero-sum international trade conflicts is for everyone to quickly come up with a stable and sustainable consensus among each party. Before that happens, carmakers would have to try to sustain themselves or fight a way out under the pressure of costs and market demand.

As one of the most specialized fastener exhibitions in the world and a widely expected fastener event, the 19th Fastener Trade Show is dedicated to connecting the upstream and downstream of fastener manufacturing industry. Focusing on end users and building a global fastener trade platform are the highlights of the show. Suzhou, one of the central cities in Yangtze River Delta, is the most developed and modern cities in Jiangsu Province. In addition, Suzhou enjoys a very convenient transportation with only 80 km away from Shanghai, and less than 200 km away from Jiaxing, Wuxi, Ningbo, Hangzhou and many other fastener manufacturing bases. Therefore, the Suzhou show can not only help visitors easily connect with most of the fastener manufacturers in China, but also provide them with a good chance to visit the fastener factories. In recent years, the Suzhou show has expanded into two halls, respectively the Fastener Hall and the Equipment Hall, with total exhibition space of 12,000 sqm. The 19th Fastener Trade Show Suzhou will continue strong momentum with expected more than 400 fastener and supporting manufacturers worldwide. Therefore, the show will offer a great opportunity for professional buyers to do one-stop purchasing of fastener products, production equipment and auxiliary products, as well as raw materials. According to the statistics of previous Suzhou shows, visitors came from 40 countries and regions around the world. It is expected that the 19th Fastener Trade Show Suzhou will attract over 12,000 local and overseas buyers.
The exhibitors also appreciated the good organization and atmosphere that accompanied the event. "The second edition of FASTENER POLAND® showed that the fastener industry continues to grow. For our company, it was an opportunity to forge new business contacts in Poland and beyond and meet our current partners. We appreciate the lengths the organizers went to in order to ensure visitor comfort at the event. We hope that the amazing atmosphere of this year's edition will help make the trade show grow in the future. See you next year!" Adam Dobrzewiński, CEO at ABAKOSTEEL s.c. Sharjah represents 45% of the UAE’s total industrial production value. Many exhibitors who saw the opportunities the 2020 World Expo may bring to manufacturing were also present at the exhibition this year. According to Fastener World’s correspondent on-site, a high percentage of visitors were metal processing plants or metal manufacturers, as well as traders and distributors. Many visitors told our correspondent that they hope Taiwanese fastener suppliers can set up factories or designate local sales agents in UAE, as what local users mostly request is “pre-packed fasteners,” but unfortunately, local traders usually do not accept smallvolume orders. As a result, if Taiwanese suppliers can set up their local factories in UAE, they will have more opportunities to directly contact local users who need pre-packed fasteners. This largest fastener exhibition in the Middle East drew a lot of companies interested in the Middle East market in attendance. Many visitors coming to this exhibition told our correspondent, “Taiwanese suppliers can definitely take the lead in the Middle East market if they can provide the Arabian market with certain quantities of customized fasteners and shipments, and can be even preferred if they can have local factories or offices in UAE.” Most of the product categories demanded in the Middle East are industrial fasteners and steel structure construction fasteners.

Their Fastener Trade Statistics and Market Potential for Suppliers 2018西班牙和葡萄牙扣件貿易剖析 by Sharareh Shahidi Hamedani
*This article is a study on HS Code 7318 and all values in tables are in thousand USD.
Profile of Spain The highest number of the unemployed in the EU (3.3 million) and one of the highest poverty rates in the eurozone suggest that the Spanish economy is still in trouble. However, after two recessions in a decade Spain has also pulled off a recovery that has turned it into a locomotive of the eurozone. With countries such as Germany and Italy faltering, Spain is at the last count of the greatest single contributor to the eurozone’s growth — generating a larger share of the fourth quarter’s additional annual gross domestic product than any other nation in the single currency. Over the whole of last year (2018), the Spanish economy expanded 2.5 percent, marking the fifth consecutive year of robust economic growth and by far the fastest growth rate of all big eurozone economies.

The positive growth trends in both countries show that these two countries were improving their fastener businesses, and therefore, they could improve their export size.
(Unit: 1,000 USD)
The Portuguese economy is resisting the prevailing gloom in Europe. Activity remained strong, with GDP rising by 0.5% in the first quarter, or 1.8% at an annual rate, compared with 1.2% in the euro zone, forecasts Brussels. Portugal’s good economic health comes mainly from private consumption fuelled by rising wages and employment dynamics. The preliminary data, says the national statistics institute, “reflect a significant acceleration in investment.” The government deficit has fallen from 7.2% of GDP to 0.5% of GDP since 2014, and the unemployment rate from a peak of 17.9% in early 2013, to about 6% currently. Despite of the economic growth in both countries, they are still two weakest countries in the EU zone.
Fastener Situation
The above table shows that the power of Spanish fastener suppliers was 9.6 times stronger than that of Portuguese suppliers. It could be in the capacity of each factory and/or the quantity of fastener producers.
Export Section In 2018, the global size of exported fastener business was about 41.86 billion USD, and the share of the EU zone was 39.4% (16.48 billion USD). Spain was ranked as the 6th largest fastener exporter in the EU zone. Its market share in the world was 1.5% and its market share in the EU was 3.7%. Portugal as the 19th largest exporter in the EU zone had 0.25% of the global exported fastener market share and 0.4% of the exported fastener market share of the EU zone.

Spain can be a gateway to the Portuguese market, based on Spain’s independent degree, it seems that the Spanish market has enough power to be an independent fastener producer. So, fastener equipment producers can re-look to the Spanish market for improving their fastener producing power. On the other hand, fastener exporters in other countries can recalculate their export costs to the Portuguese market and compare them with re-exporting their products to Portugal through Spain (21.8% of fasteners required in Portugal were exported through Spain).

Fastener Trade in Poland in 2018
by Shervin Shahidi Hamedani
2018波蘭扣件貿易分析
Trade Overview In January 2019 the growth of industrial production in Poland reached 6.1 percent year-on-year, higher than a 2.8 percent growth recorded in December last year. From 1992 until January 2019 the average industrial production growth in Poland was about 6.3%. The highest growth within this period was in March of 2004 at 23.5 percent and the lowest one was in the first month of 2019 at -15.30 percent. Poland benefits from its labour force quality which is backed by a reasonably high level of efficiency and comparably low wages. Additionally, the consistency and strength of Poland’s macroeconomic, development of country’s infrastructure as well as opening up the country’s trade borders have put Poland’s economy in the healthy growing stage. This country recorded 5 percent GDP growth last year and it is projected that its GDP growth will continue in the next 2 years. In terms of trade statistics, Poland’s major export destinations are European countries. The percentage of its export value to the European countries compared with the total global export in recent years was more than 80 percent. In 2017, for example, only a minority of export was shipped to Asia (about 6%), North America (about 4%), Africa and Latin America (about 2%) and the rest was delivered to European countries. On the other hand, in terms of imports, this country has major suppliers from various countries in Asia other than Europe. China, South Korea, India, Japan and Taiwan are the key Asian exporters having created significant trade deficits for Poland in the last two years. They have exported billions of dollars of products in 2018 to Poland while their value of imports from Polish manufacturers are considerably low. In December 2018, Poland recorded a trade deficit of EUR 1,340 million. The average trade balance for Poland was EUR -595.02 million from 2000 until 2018. However, early last year, Poland’s foreign trade turnover increased almost ten-fold. Most of Poland’s imports are capital goods needed for industrial retooling and for manufacturing inputs like machinery and transport equipment. Among Poland’s trading partners that produce the highest positive trade balances, Polish surpluses with Ukraine, Romania and the United Kingdom have been significantly increased at the fastest pace in the last few years. The surpluses obviously explain Poland’s competitive advantages with these trading partners, and also show the importance of having particular strategies by Poland for each of these countries in order to optimize the position of Poland in international trade.
Polish Fastener Market Polish fastener market is one of the most impressive and fastest growing market in Europe, supported by a growing demand of industrial manufacturing, automotive, aerospace and construction industries both locally and internationally. Overall, the significant portion of local fastener production is used for domestic industries. For instance, Poland is one of the largest global furniture exporters, and this industry creates a high demand for industrial fasteners in the country for local manufacturers. In the fastener market, more specifically for screws, bolts and nuts (HS Code: 7318), the largest export destination for Polish fastener manufacturers is Germany. In 2018, Poland exported about USD 192.7 million worth of fasteners to Germany. The export value in 2018 significantly increased from 2017 with the value of USD 176.1 million. The second largest fastener importer, the UK, which is far behind Germany, imported about USD 36 million worth of fasteners from Polish manufacturers in 2018. The third largest market for Polish fastener manufacturers is France. In 2018, USD 21.4 million worth of fasteners were shipped to France from Poland. Emerging Fastener Markets no.8/2019
Industry Focus Other than the above 3 major fastener import markets for Polish exporters, the top ten Polish fasteners importers are Sweden, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, Romania, Belgium, Hungary, Belarus, the Netherlands and Norway. It is notable that, other than European countries there is no country from other regions in this list. The total fastener import value of all these 10 countries is less than the value of fastener imports of Germany. This shows how crucial German market is for Polish fastener exporters. In contrast to importers, Poland’s international suppliers who export their products into Poland’s market are diversified by a variety of manufacturers and traders from European and Asian countries as well as America. The value of fastener imports to Poland shows that Germany should still remain at the top of the list and be named as the major fastener exporter to Poland followed by China, Taiwan, Italy, America, France, Czech Republic, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom.
119
Polish industrial fastener imports are strongly dependent on domestic and regional demand. Local industrial growth and exports to the EU (more specifically to Germany) play an essential role of creating fastener demand. Additionally, solid private consumption and rebounding investment in Poland have significant contribution on generating demand for fastener imports. Polish fastener manufacturers need to take advantage of the opportunities created by the changing global market trends. Exporters could become truly competitive on a global scale by focusing on areas in which they are strong. However, the fastener manufacturing sector in Poland still has a long way to grow more specifically in areas like international cooperation, research and development, acquisition of foreign companies and technology. Local manufacturers and exporters need efficient and aggressive international promotion. Last but not least, Poland will still require more improvements in infrastructure, make simpler regulations more specifically in order to attract foreign investors, and to invest more and more in new technologies and innovation.
In 2018, a total of USD 393.1 million worth of fasteners were imported by Poland from German manufacturers. This amount is slightly less than half of the total fastener import value by Poland in 2018, considering that the list of fastener exporters to the Polish market is ranked based on the value of their exports to Poland. In terms of the quantity of exports, China has the highest number of exports to Poland as a majority of their products are standard fasteners with lower quality and cheaper prices compared with German fasteners. Chinese exporters sold about USD 113.6 million worth of fasteners to the Polish market which is significantly lower than the amount sold by German exporters. However, the quantity of exports in 2018 for Chinese exporters into Poland was 77,747 Sources: tons compared with 61,350 tons which German manufacturers World’s Top Exports, Poland’s Top Trading Partners shipped to Poland.
