Déjà Vu

Mariana Cordoba

Artist Statement: I am a Colombian American abstract artist living in Miami, FL who fell in love with painting because colors and textures provide me with the perfect emotional escape. Creating art brings me the most happiness. I paint because bringing to life the perfect piece - one that clearly depicts my thoughts and emotions - fills me with joy. I live in the moment; snatching bits of inspiration from everyday people and figures that evolve into captivating textures, depth, and color. Once I internalize the subject, I sets off to paint it with enthusiasm and excitement. I am a big fan of mixed media and love to explore new mediums, including silkscreen and photography. A graduate from the University of Miami with a degree in Studio Art, I am currently pursuing a Master’s in Real Estate and Urbanism (MRED+U) at the University of Miami.

Series Statement: Déjà Vu Series I traveled to Madrid, Spain July 2021 to showcase my work in the JustMad Art Fair, under the representation of ACA, Art Concept Alternative; where my father joined me for an extended stay to celebrate my success. Upon my return to Miami, a series of events took place that left me feeling like I may had experienced them in the past, which led me to create the Déjà Vu Series. This sensation had remained consistent trough my extended stay in Spain, so I knew that this needed to be the title. This series reminded me of the first time I picked up a paint brush in Spain almost 8 years ago during a period of emotional turmoil. A lot of personal growth has occurred since then. It was in Spain that I experimented and felt liberated by the act of painting. While experiencing the déjà vu, or what felt like déjà vu, I recalled my first painting experiences where I experimented with a variety of techniques. I observed the scenery everywhere I traveled and wanted to paint what I saw, the trees, the flowers, the plains. The colors of the Spanish countryside mesmerized and inspired me. Each of the paintings in this series flow into each other; the greens melding into the browns, and so forth. These works tell a unique story for me, I hope they do the same for you. Please enjoy, Mariana Cordoba
