VOX MAGAZINE

EDITOR’S LETTER

WELCOME TO

The first edition of a magazine is always exciting, but having recently celebrated Eid and Diwalli, we have lots to celebrate. Including, of course, the launch of what I hope is going to become your favourite magazine.

The girls at Express Beauty in Landmark Mall (tel: 6649 7680) are experts in their field – stop by for a mani, pedi and facial – and all in one hour!

So, I hear you ask, what is VOX? VOX is a lifestyle magazine for Qatar, produced by Vodafone. A magazine to inspire you, entertain you, and most importantly, bring some fun into your life. In this edition we look at what’s hot. We look to the streets of Qatar to see what you guys think is cool. We look at the hottest new necklaces, spend 48 hours in Damascus, and check out the world’s scariest roads. Don’t forget to turn to page 31 to check out the latest Vodafone stuff in Qatar! Please let me know what you think and what you’d like to see in future editions of VOX.

If you’re interested in appearing on our cover or in our fashion stories please email me. Vodafone has made it its mission to make a world of difference to all the people of Qatar and I hope that, if only in a small way, VOX makes a difference in your world.

PROFILE

An Unlikely Fashionista

by Mohanalakshmi Rajakumar

Maryah Al-Dafa is only in her mid twenties, but ten minutes into any conversation with her and you’ll realise that probably every one of those years has been spent living purposefully. Don’t let the friendly smile and impeccable manners fool you – this is one young lady with a dynamite combination of grit, brains, and creativity. Al-Dafa studied International Politics at Georgetown University in Washington DC and then went on to get a Masters degree, (also in International Politics) from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Never one to follow a beaten path, she also has five years experience in the fashion industry. Add to these credentials the fact that for the past three years, she has been working at Qatar Foundation as a policy analyst, and you’re beginning to get a sense of her diverse interests. Yet in her free time, Al-Dafa is not only thinking of ways to engage Qatar’s youth in society, but has developed another equally gripping focus: setting up shop (literally) in one of Qatar’s premium new commercial arcades, the Pearl. Her Vera Wang store opened in November 2009, providing clothing for major events like the Tribeca Film Festival and catering to the discerning dresser. Al-Dafa selected Wang as her designer of choice in order to stand out in Qatar’s often glitzy fashion scene. Wang’s clean-lines and classical fits avoid the trendy hems and fabrics used by others, creating an elegant distinctive look much appreciated by Al-Dafa’s urban clientele. But what causes a brainiac to start a couture shopping experience? VOX caught up with the busy girl, (not an easy task given all that she juggles in a given day,) to find out more about the academic who has an inner fashionista.

VOX MAGAZINE

VOX: Why fashion? MD: I know some people do not think fashion is a serious business, but if I have fun doing it and people like to wear VW clothes, accessories, or even just perfumes, then it is worth it.

VOX: Why Vera Wang? MD: The whole concept behind the Vera Wang store is my wanting to bring a different type of style to Qatar. Her clothes are simple but elegant yet different in texture and design. I am trying to add to the variety of fashion in Qatar. I chose the Pearl as the location because it gives a different feel to shopping in Qatar than any other place.

VOX: Entering the shop or looking in from outside, there are three mannequins hanging from the ceiling rather than the store front, unlike other clothing shops in the Pearl. MD: The mannequins give the store that “modern look” and mimic the design of the VW store in New York. The layout of the shop itself resembles an old warehouse that is modern and full of light. I am not sure many people notice but the important thing is that the clothes pop out. It took a lot of work to make the store look as simple as possible. Hopefully people will feel comfortable while shopping but also imagine themselves shopping anywhere else they might find Vera Wang products.

VOX: What advice do you have for other aspiring entrepreneurs? MD: I would tell anyone who wants to open a business that they need to be willing

to be patient, to face every obstacle possible, and to choose to do something you love, because when it gets tough that is the only thing that will keep you from giving up.

VOX: Any new developments since you’ve opened up? MD: We do wedding gowns now, and this is definitely a shift of style for Qataris. Every time someone takes an appointment to see wedding dresses, I am so happy that they like the dresses and that we can be part of a big event in their lives.

VOX: What role does your gender play in the way you do business? MD: I definitely think my experience is different because of my gender and age. I have been in many situations where I get those awkward looks where people are thinking in their heads “is she serious”?

VOX: Just owning a store could be a full time job in itself. Where do you get the energy? MD: Honestly, everything I was able to do with the Vera Wang store and anything that I am planning on doing, would not be possible without the support of my family and friends. You can join the store’s fan page on Facebook, Vera Wang – Qatar, or follow them on Twitter. For the traditionally minded, call the store at 4-495-3876 extension 5157. Vera Wang at the Pearl is open most days from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

In essence, the Wrap 920AV is able to open up certain videos away from the block panel display to give it the illusion of interactivity. DRIVE

FROM BOLIVIA TO SIBERIA

ROADS THAT WEREN’T MADE FOR A LEISURELY Friday DRIVE. BY KIMBERLY FISHER HORAN

WORLD’S SCARIEST ROADS THE FOLLOWING ROADS, FROM BOLIVIA’S ‘ROAD OF DEATH’ TO THE ‘HIGHWAY FROM HELL’ IN RUSSIA, REPRESENT SOME OF THE PLANET’S MOST HARROWING. DRIVE AT YOUR OWN RISK... Since the dawn of motorised transit, deep jungle and high mountains haven’t stopped humans from trying to lay roads through the planet’s most treacherous terrain. These roads can be found all over the world. They wind through the desert, they climb and dip through rivers and along canyons once used as waypoints for wilderness travel. Roads like the Karakorum Highway in Pakistan, a two-lane that climbs past 16,000 feet, have put pavement over parts of the historical Silk Route. They can be heart-stopping and perilous to traverse. Bolivia’s North Yungas Road, an archetype of danger dubbed the “Road of Death,” is a mountain-hugging 1,000-foot winding narrow track that skirts huge drops with a near miss around every corner. The Halsema Highway, an unpaved mountain road in the Philippines’ Cordillera Central range, seems tailormade for the likes of Indiana Jones. Here, foggy cloud forests and landslides could come at any given turn.

22

VOX MAGAZINE

1. COL DE TURINI, FRANCE At its highest point, Col de Turini is 1607m. The mountain pass situated in the Alps of southern France is part of a 35km rally stage of the Monte Carlo Rally of WRC, which combines 34 challenging hairpins and long stretches where cars top 180km/h. It is one of the most exciting roads on Earth.

4. THE ROAD OF DEATH, BOLiVIA Famous for its extreme danger, the north Yungas Road (also know as the El Camino de la Muerte, ‘Road of Death’ in Spanish) is a 70km road connecting La Paz and Coroico. It was christened the “world’s most dangerous road” in 1995 due to its single-lane width, extreme drop offs, and lack of guardrails, further fog and rain can also make visibility poor. It is estimated that 200 to 300 travelers are killed each year on this treacherous road.

7. Pasubio (Vicenza), Italy The road serves mostly motorcycles and certain types of car. It is dangerously narrow and slippery, spanning many cliff faces and tunnels with stunning scenery, making this a popular destination for adventurous travelers.

2. STELVIO PASS, ITALY Located in the Eastern Alps of Italy, the Stelvio Pass is a mountain road at an altitude of 2700m. The road is challenging to drive due to 48 hairpin bends, with the road becoming exceedingly narrow at some points with some very steep inclines. It is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps and the second highest in the Alps, after the 2770m high Col de l’Iseran. The mountain pass is one of the craziest continuous hairpin routes in the world.

5. LENA HIGHWAY ‘HIGHWAY FROM HELL’, RUSSIA The last 1000km of the Russian Federal Highway from Moscow city to the Siberian city of Yakutsk is called the Lena Highway. Yakutsk is considered the coldest city on earth, with January temperatures averaging -45, but surprisingly, it is only in the summertime that the road becomes impassable. Whenever it rains in summer (which is often), the road becomes a mud pit making it impossible for vehicles to pass through it.

8. The Halsema Highway, Philippines The Halsema Highway runs through the Central Cordillera Valley in the Philippines and the 240km road is mostly unpaved. The narrow road and steep cliff faces make the road almost impassable during the rainy season. It’s known for its rock/mudslides and the buses that drive dangerously fast on it. There are many accidents and overturned buses on a yearly basis due to the sheer drop offs of more than 305m without a guard rail.

3. LEH-MANALI HIGHWAY, INDIA The Leh-Manali Highway is a drive of nearly 500km along the Himalaya mountain range. It travels through the world’s highest mountain passes with its highest altitude around 3000m. This road is one of the most complicated and challenging in the world, with snow, landslides and terrain making the journey exceedingly difficult for anything other than a capable four wheel drive vehicle.

6. GUOLIANG TUNNEL ROAD, CHINA The magnificent tunnel road in the Taihang mountains was built by local villagers and took five years to finish. Many villagers lost their lives in accidents during construction of the tunnel but others continued relentlessly until the tunnel was opened to traffic in May 1977. The 1200m long tunnel is 5m high and 4m wide. It is dubbed “the road that does not tolerate any mistakes.”

9. Trollstigen, Norway The Trollstigen (the ‘troll ladder’) is a series of stunning roads with breathtaking views. The roads, though not lacking in safety standards, take a lot of concentration and driving skill to conquer. The vertigo-inducing steep inclines and intense set of hairpin turns leave no margin for error and the narrow road leaves extremely few possibilities for vehicles to pass each other. There are frequent rockfalls in the region which increase the danger.

2. The Bloom chair by Philippine designer Kenneth Cabonpue is inspired by a graceful blossom. Sculpted with hundreds of fine running stitches radiating from the centre of the seat, a subtle textual feel is created. A stunningly beautiful piece. 3. The Mow chair from UAE’s Traffic by Lebanese designer Fadi Sarieddine is a simple wooden chair with an unconventional seat available as a single chair or bench for 2 or 3 people. The unique seat, is a bed of fresh green grass, serving as both a bench and an indoor plant. 4. Smooth and Smoothie by French designer Florent Degourc creates a child-like visual feast. Hours

Damascus Shop

BY Hania Nasreddin

at over 8,000 years old Damascus is considered by historians to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. As it has passed through the millennia it has not only grown but has also experienced several different civilisations. Here are my top picks for a weekend in Damascus.

Souq al-Hamidiyya is a traditional old souq that has emerged from within an old Roman temple. It is a mile long pedestrian-only straight street with densely packed small stores that sell everything from children’s toys, to fabrics, to furniture, to jewellery. A curved steel roof covers the souq letting in the natural sun light but keeping out the heat of the sun. Make sure you try some traditional Syrian ice cream.

Do Get a cab to drive you to the top of Mount Qasioun, where you can experience a panoramic view of the city. The view is spectacular at all times, day and night. Try to locate Old Damascus and the Umayyad Mosque, especially at night when the three towering minarets are bejeweled in green lights. Always ask the price of your journey before you get in the cab to avoid being scammed, and ideally ask a local or your hotel for an estimate.

SEE At the end of Souq al-Hamidiyya is the great Umayyad Mosque, which has three minarets, and is considered a great architectural achievement. The mosque was originally an Aremaean temple, that was converted into a Roman temple, then a church, and finally into a mosque. The presence of each of these conquests can still be seen within the mosque today. In the mosque lays a shrine containing the head of John-the-Baptist, or Prophet Yahya to Muslims. The mosque welcomes people of all faiths to visit, but women must wear an Abbaya (which can be rented,) to enter.

EAT Damascus is one place where I would advise not to eat budget. If a place looks like they don’t wash their vegetables, then you can almost guarantee that they don’t. Food poisoning is very common amongst tourists, so stick to clean-looking restaurants and always make sure that water is from a bottle. Swiss House is one restaurant with fantastic food. Any taxi driver can take you there, it seats 2000 and has hidden areas within the restaurant surrounded by waterfalls and plush trees. Another restaurant I would recommend is Al Liwan in the Dedeman Hotel. It serves authentic traditional Syrian food, and every night you can enjoy oriental dancing and music. It is a great place to end your day with a delicious meal, some shisha, entertainment, and the beautiful night sky.

INTERVIEW

Secs

WITH Kimberly Fisher Horan

NAME: Kimberly Fisher Horan NATIONALITY: Australian PROFESSION: Editor of VOX MAGAZINE Photo by Charlene White

Q. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN QATAR & WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED BEFORE? A. I’ve lived in Qatar since April 2009 and this is my 5th country of residence – I’ve previously lived in Sydney, Australia, Maastricht in the Netherlands, Berkshire in the UK and Budapest in Hungary.

learn something new every day and hope that the readers of VOX will write to me and let me know their thoughts and what I can do to make this magazine theirs. I made a decision when planning the magazine to feature real people – and when I say real people I mean not professional models but the people of Qatar. Any model/celebrity can look great on a cover – but I am showing that everyone is gorgeous!

Q. What HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE SO FAR? A. It’s a very hard comparison to make as they are all so different! Of course I love Sydney as it is my home town, I loved the Netherlands as I got to ride my push bike every day and eat lots of fries and mayonnaise! And I am truly loving living here in Qatar. To tell you the truth when I first was thinking about moving here I was scared as I had no idea what to expect – but I am thrilled at what I found – wonderful people, fascinating history and I meet new people and learn amazing things every day – I could not be happier.

Q. WITH YOUR HECTIC SCHEDULE and TRAVELLING SO MUCH HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO STAY FIT and HEALTHY? A. I have started working out with a trainer 3 times per week (but just for 20 minutes a time – so an hour a week!) lifting weights – I find that works for me and not eating carbs at night . I have noticed that as I approach the big 40 next year I have to work that little bit harder to stay in shape!

Q. HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK IN THIS PROFESSION? A. I completed a Journalism degree when I left university (nearly 20 years ago!) and worked in Radio for a few years before deciding to try something new and moving into Human Resources, which I loved. When I left Australia in 2003 I decided to try my hand at some new things and worked as a make up artist for Chanel in the UK (I like to play with make up – what girl doesn’t?) I came back to my journalism roots earlier this year when I wrote for and edited the book: Vodafone Women in Qatar: The Inside Story (on sale at all Vodafone stores.) Q. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? A. I truly get my inspiration from the people around me – my family, friends and colleagues and in the places that I travel to. I manage to

Q. WHEN NOT IN WORK MODE WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO? A. I love the movies and like nothing better than a good comedy. I like hanging out with my friends, shopping (of course!), travelling and meeting new people! I have just been to Mumbai for the first time and absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to go back. Q. DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR MANTRA THAT YOU LIVE BY? A. I have two! (One I stole from my husband) An old Japanese proverb: “Fall down seven times, stand up eight”, basically meaning don’t give up. And something my mother always said to me: “live a beautiful life” and I hope I do that in both the figurative and literal sense! Q. WHAT’S NEXT FOR KIMBERLY? A. REVIEWS

BY FATIMA BAHJA

Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Paige and Joseph Gordon Levitt, this action/thriller revolves around a plot so unique and complex that the viewer can’t help but feel a part of it.

MOVIE // INCEPTION

Nolan, who also wrote the film, creates a world where the most innate human privacy, the privacy of personal thought and ideas, is compromised by the existence of technology that allows entry into the human mind through dream invasion.

DiCaprio plays the role of Dom Cobb, a skilled thief or an “extractor” who specialises in stealing ideas directly through entering a subject’s dream or subconscious. His team is faced with a challenge when they are hired by Saito – an ambitious energy magnate – who wants Cobb to plant an idea in his rivals’ mind instead of stealing one. The film follows the team through their planning of the operation, the complex levels and layers of the dream and the fatal obstacles they face in their mission. If you’re a Nolan fan and you loved The Dark Knight, you’ll definitely see a lot of Nolan’s trademarks in this film. His creative transitioning of scenes as the story progresses will keep you on the edge of your seat. Put simply, Nolan is a master at making sure he has your full attention, whether it’s through mind-blowing action scenes or a genius plot. A word of advice – watch this movie by yourself or with a quiet friend, because you’ll want to pay full attention to every detail.

BOOK // THE ROAD BY CORMAC MCCARTHY

If recent post-apocalyptic movies like The Book of Eli have given you some sense of what the world could look like at its end, this award-winning novel will take you to a whole new level of understanding and appreciation, not only of the world as we see it now, but also of human relationships and human nature at its simplest. In this novel, McCarthy narrates the story of an unnamed father and son – mostly referred to as “man” and “boy” – as they journey through a burned and nearly destroyed America. The cataclysm that brought the world to ruin, darkness and environmental death is unspecified. All that is clear to the reader is that it is a time of danger and desperation, with few survivors, some of whom resort to cannibalism to survive. The father and son travel alone to the coast where it is assumed to be safer, searching for food and water to keep them alive while simultaneously attempting to steer clear of the cannibals or “the bad people”. McCarthy’s unique story-telling style gives the reader the purest and simplest understanding of humanity. Information we usually take for granted in novels, such as names, places and reasons for events is barely presented in this story. Because of that, McCarthy allows us to dedicate our full attention to the bond between father and son, and indeed, the world in its most basic reality. This novel is a must-read!

BOOK // HOUSE RULES BY JODI PICOULT

If you’re in the mood for a light, fun-filled comedy, then this is your pick. This animated comedy, with Steve Carell, Jason Segel (Marshall from How I met your Mother) and Julie Andrews is a film that’s fun to watch with friends, family or even by yourself.

MOVIE// // INCEPTION MOVIE despicable me

Gru, voiced by Carell, is a world-renowned criminal mastermind used to being the number one criminal in the world. Gru’s life completely changes when Vector (Segel) outdoes him by stealing a pyramid. Determined to win his reputation back, Gru adopts three orphaned girls to help him with his plan. However, as he spends time with the girls, he finds himself growing into more of a father figure then a thief. The film revolves around Gru’s humorous ricochet between “superbad” and “superdad.” Carell’s hilarious use of what seems to be a strong Russian accent gives Despicable Me an added comedic edge and you can’t help but laugh with every word he says. His character’s attitude along with his relationship with the three girls and Vector is funny on many different levels, from the simple ha-ha’s to the smart and witty ones. This is definitely a film to watch for a good laugh.

Award-winning author of My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult’s latest novel House Rules is about the life of an autistic boy through the eyes of four protagonists. As in her other novels, Picoult explores family, love and society through a unique and creative narrative style that captures readers’ hearts and minds. Jacob Hunt, diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at the age of three, does not behave as an ordinary teenager. He is extremely intelligent, but lacks the most basic of social skills. Through different protagonists, we are exposed to the struggles of his family’s household as they attempt to maintain a normal lifestyle while adapting to his social inabilities. However, their struggles are complicated when Jacob’s tutor is found dead and Jacob is the number one suspect. The story follows Jacob’s trial as he fails to communicate his innocence and his family’s worst fears are realised. One of Picoult’s most powerful novels, House Rules sheds light on how being different may lead to being an outcast. Her use of multiple narratives for her protagonists is brilliant as she manages to engage with readers through different points of view. Number one on the New York Times bestseller list, House Rules is a book definitely worth reading for those of you who have an interest in the social line that separates normal from different.
