APRIL 22 IS EARTH DAY, AND APRIL 28 IS ARBOR DAY.
This month, Mary Kay celebrates a 15-year partnership and 1.3 million trees planted with the Arbor Day Foundation.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Mary Kay and the Arbor Day Foundation’s partnership began in 2008 with Independent Beauty Consultants’ engagement in a recycling program. A tree was planted in a forest of need for every old compact recycled.
• Thanks to a national recycling effort by Independent Beauty Consultants and their customers, as well as the Company’s employees, Mary Kay exceeded its collection goal of 200,000 old compacts.
• Since then, Mary Kay’s support has also included Nature Explore Classrooms in domestic violence shelters to provide residents a safe place to connect with nature and global, large-scale reforestation projects. To learn more and to share our efforts with your customers, visit Our Commitment

Unlocking Your Potential
New to team-building and don’t know how to start?
We asked these Mary Kay Independent Sales Directors for their tips on team-building.
Find a Need and Fill it.
LINDSAY STEWART, INDEPENDENT FUTURE EXECUTIVE SENIOR SALES DIRECTOR, AUBURN, ALA.
Prospective team members and customers are all around us! I tell my unit members all the time that there are women everywhere, and they ALL have skin. Just like selling, sharing requires that we find a need and fill it! For example, extra income, flexibility, girlfriend time, an outlet from a stressful day job, personal growth … just to name a few. I believe that women everywhere are praying for an opportunity that’s just like Mary Kay, and it is selfish of us if we do not offer it! Help enough women get what they want, and you will get what you want.
Happiness Attracts.
MELINDA NASH-BELL, INDEPENDENT EXECUTIVE SENIOR SALES DIRECTOR, GAINESVILLE, GA.
I have found that my great prospective team members are found at my facial appointments and parties. During the appointments, I build relationships; I bond with them, and we become fast friends. I have found that showing joy and happiness in my business attracts women to me and to Mary Kay. The best way to encourage someone is to do it first – ‘lead by example.’ It’s hard to teach what you do not practice. On my unit meeting nights, we role-play different scenarios. I also demonstrate on Zoom or in person, picking up the phone and allowing them to hear how I book an sharing appointment, how I overcome objections and how I close the appointment regardless of the response. A Mary Kay business is a great opportunity for every woman, so always be open to finding women who are looking for what Mary Kay has to offer.
Participate to Grow.
OLGA CASTRO, INDEPENDENT SALES DIRECTOR, SAN ANTONIO, FLA.
I find my team members by participating in family and recreational activities, fairs and other events, and by becoming a volunteer in my community. I identify my team members or ‘power associates’ with facials and by searching for people who might have any of the following profiles:
• Women who want to be present as mothers and grandmothers.
• People who want additional income.
• People who love skin care and makeup.
• Any person who does not feel valued or recognized in their job.
• Any person who loves helping others. Any person who loves teaching skin care, self-care and confidence.
• Anyone who is looking for balance in their lives.
• Anybody who wants to meet people and build friendships.
• Anybody who likes to belong to a team and contribute to a collective goal.
• People who were professionals in their native country or who have always wanted to be some type of professional person.
• People who like to contribute to social causes to help make the world better.
I encourage my unit members to develop their teams by sharing the opportunity. I talk to them about the benefits of changing the lives of others and how gratifying it is to use our talents to service our communities. I share the rewards of team-building through my own example, commitment, responsibility and love for each of my team members and customers.
We Get Nowhere by Ourselves.
ALICIA DURAN, INDEPENDENT SENIOR SALES DIRECTOR, SYLMAR, CALIF.
I identify potential new customers and team members when I’m out and about by observing their movements, their skin and their makeup to decide how I will approach them. If they are working, I wait for the right moment and comment that they are really good at their job and that I am looking for people like them. If a woman’s makeup is spot on, I approach her and compliment her on her makeup. I tell her that I’m looking for people like her who can teach others how to apply their makeup and take care of their skin. I will also give out samples of the Clear Proof Deep-Cleansing Charcoal Mask with a flier describing its benefits, get her phone number to send an application video and ask her to please send before-and-after photos.
I encourage my unit members to attend all events so they can learn everything they want about a Mary Kay business. I provide them with selling strategies so they feel confident when talking to their customers. The most important resource is that they know that by ourselves we get nowhere; we need to have a team. Earning the red jacket is a great way to start, and they learn the rewards of having a team in constant growth.

Ashley was volunteering as a grief counselor for the Warm Place, a center for children who lost a parent, when she was first introduced to Mary Kay. For more than a year, Connie Hayes, an employee there who was also an Independent Beauty Consultant, shared products and the Mary Kay opportunity with her. One day, she invited Ashley to lunch and shared more in depth what Mary Kay was all about.
“She reminded me that my circle of influence as a nurse at a local hospital was ideal and that I could share products with nurses, friends and family members. So in 2003, I took the plunge.
HAMSTER WHEEL
SYNDROME
“Looking back, I’d say I eased into my Mary Kay business mostly serving myself and a few friends and family. A few years in, I attended an event where 12 Independent National Sales Directors shared their stories, and a light bulb went off. They had something I wanted – freedom to make my own path and the confidence to know no barriers. With my nursing career, I was already experiencing what I called the hamster wheel syndrome – eat, sleep, work, repeat.”
Ashley and her husband George also wanted to start a family, so she knew her Mary Kay business could help give her flexibility. Meanwhile, George was going through a career change that created some instability.
By 2006, her “why” had definitely evolved.
Ashley created her plan to move along the Mary Kay career path. She was busy working full circle, consistently holding parties and sharing the Mary Kay opportunity. “I remembered Mary Kay Ash said, ‘You can have anything in life if you’re willing to work for it.’”
Today, Ashley likes to relate working her Mary Kay business to a water pump. “You have to pump a lot to get started, then the water begins to flow.”
MAKE IT WHAT YOU WANT.
“Back then, I worked consistently to build face-to-face relationships. Today, we have many more options and can layer in virtual parties and social media to help us reach more women, share products and share the Mary Kay opportunity. A Mary Kay business is even more flexible and can be whatever you want it to be.
Even with new avenues to reach others, she says the business basics haven’t changed and neither has what Mary Kay stands for.
“To me, almost everyone has a need. I listen to see how a Mary Kay business can fit that need. Women still like to get out, get hugs and get encouragement.”
Six months after making the decision to move along the Mary Kay career path, Ashley debuted as an Independent Sales Director while continuing her nursing career.
“Many nurses I worked with were just there for the paycheck. My Mary Kay business is so different. I love the culture and the positive, godly women who surround me. With my Mary Kay business, I can share my faith, values and big thinking. Others listen, encourage and help me to my next success.
DREAMS ENCOURAGED
One of the biggest gifts she’s received since starting her Mary Kay business is the chance to dream. “I forgot how to do that somewhere along the way, but at Mary Kay it’s part of the culture. Today, I’m more confident and secure. I love that I pass along that confidence to my 13-year-old son Raiden and truly impact future generations.
“I’ve also learned to be a better leader and others-focused. I’m not sure when that switch happened, but I now get greater satisfaction helping others achieve their dreams. Like Mary Kay Ash said, watching a new Independent Beauty Consultant is like watching a tight little rosebud blossom into a beautiful and fragrant rose.”
Ashley’s best advice to anyone is to never give up. “Even if you slow to a turtle’s crawl, don’t give up because that’s the only time you will fail. I tell my unit members to always find a win each day. It may not look like much to others, but it’s yours and you can say, ‘OMG, I did that!’ Visualize how far you’ve come and focus on that.
“Independent Senior National Sales Director Emeritus Jeanne Rowland told me, ‘If you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want. The more you give, the more you get back.’ That has definitely been my experience.”
THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT.
Ashley looks forward to the future and where her Mary Kay business will take her next.
“I love to research and learn about the latest products on Mary Kay InTouch® and how they can make my customers feel beautiful and confident. Being able to find their needs and fill them is so worthwhile.
“One of my best customers actually found me after calling the Mary Kay office to locate an Independent Beauty Consultant near her. Twenty years later, she still loves trying every new product we introduce! I’ve met so many wonderful and inspiring people along the way. They are all so special.”
Less than 1% of Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultants meet the criteria to earn the use of a Mary Kay Career Car or the Cash Compensation option.
