hen Sonya Coleman started her Mary Kay business Aug. 2, 2016, she was not

new to Mary Kay. In fact, she had been an Independent Sales Director for more than 20 years. But when a terrible car accident sidelined Sonya, she chose to put her Mary Kay business – and her life – on hold. Thankfully, it was only temporary. A little over a year later, Sonya would make her comeback and be stronger than ever. “I first started my Mary Kay business in 1993

debt. At the time, I was working full time for the federal government and going to school. I had become an Independent Senior Sales Director, earning the use of 10 Mary Kay Career Cars along the way, and was even able to leave my government position. My dream was to become an Independent National Sales Director, and I was working toward making that happen.”

PLANS CHANGE In April 2015, everything changed. “I was in a horrific car accident that left me with a traumatic brain injury. I suffered many physical ailments and memory loss so bad that there were times I got lost in my own neighborhood. I decided to let my Mary Kay business go.” A little over a year later, after taking time to heal and recover with weekly visits to a neurologist and occupational therapist to relearn basic tasks, Sonya was ready to start again. “I’m a leader of women and I also know my potential is limitless with my Mary Kay business. My memory of a lot of things had dimmed, but my dream of becoming an Independent National Sales Director was still very vivid. “I’ve always loved what the Company stands for. Our values align. When I took that break, I knew I’d be back if I could. I stayed connected with my offspring Independent Sales Director. When I was ready, I started again as an Independent Beauty Consultant on her personal team. Previous unit members who believed in my vision returned to their Mary Kay businesses. Eleven rejoined my team my first month. I entered the DIQ Program and on Jan. 1, 2017, we debuted as a unit.” Along the way, Sonya earned the use of the Chevy Malibu, Chevy Equinox and a pink Cadillac in October 2020.

SOCIAL SHIFT Prior to March 2020, 95 percent of Sonya’s parties were in person. “We had weekly unit meetings that included guests, and we held weekly Muffins and Makeovers events. We also had a monthly brunch that was a guest event. And I held a weekly virtual training class every Saturday morning. “In March 2020, we made a pivot and transitioned to virtual parties. Product samples were in the mail immediately for our next Muffins and Makeovers event. If we ran out of samples, we asked our customers to download the Mary Kay® Skin Analyzer App and Mary Kay MirrorMe™ App, which helped them learn more about our skin care and color products. The Mary Kay® apps are vital to my Mary Kay business. Social media became a networking resource that we quickly learned to tap into more.” Soon, Sonya and her unit members realized the potential that came with holding virtual parties. “We got excited as we realized our reach could be greater – we could now connect with people across the U.S.”

BUILDING REDS “I encourage new Independent Beauty Consultants to add their first personal team member within the first 30 days to become what I refer to as a ‘Red-in-Qualification (RIQ.)’ I believe when an Independent Beauty Consultant exercises her ‘red muscle’ by sharing a Mary Kay business from the start, she can build confidence as she shares the opportunity with others just as Mary Kay Ash asked us to do.”

PASS IT ON. Sonya says her life has been transformed in ways she could have never imagined. “My Mary Kay business has an intangible value that has no price tag. I am able to pass on a legacy of skills, integrity and endless potential to my family. “My three children, who are now adults, grew up with the values and ethics I’ve experienced as part of the Mary Kay culture. They have seen me set big goals. Sometimes I achieve them and sometimes I don’t, but I never give up. “My husband actually wrote the check and ordered my first Mary Kay® Starter Kit because I was scared to take that first step, but he believed in me. Years later, he’s able to enjoy the rewards my Mary Kay business has allowed including the Destination Red Bahamas Trip and he’s really looking forward to me earning the next Top Sales Director Trip! “People start their Mary Kay business for many reasons. In our unit, we have women who have reached phenomenal heights in their corporate business careers, but they find something in their Mary Kay businesses that’s different. We are a sisterhood. We pray at 5:30 a.m. Monday -Friday. We support each other. We encourage each other. We do life together.
