ACADEMIC WORK

ACOUSTIC WALL - DESIGN BUILD

GROUP PROJECT. AUS, ARC 502 STUDIO VIII, FALL 2013

Project Description Fabrication studies in steel to understand its potentials and limitations as a material along with explorations in form to develop acoustic solutions. Each module held an absorbent material, rock wool, and the perforations on the module’s helped to absorb the sound and improved the acoustics. The end product is a prototype of an acoustic partition and it separates the classrooms and isolates the noises. Role Explorations with paper to create different forms and modules. Research in materials properties and existing design solutions to control sound absorption. Creating different modules and exploring design ideas for the modules to function as elements in different acoustic solutions such as ceilings, walls or functional partitions. Design development of the modules to create a free standing acoustic wall. Fabrication and production of the final modules.

CATWALK

AUS, ARC 501 STUDIO ABROAD VII, SUMMER 2013

Project Description Through observing and photographing urban elements in Milan, new spaces were created through a series of 2D collages that show juxtaposed elements and materials together and transform them into 3D conceptual spaces that carry different pieces from Milan city. A catwalk was created in a warehouse by collaging photographs of the windows and steel meshes with steel grates in the streets of Milan. The intention was to use density and transparency of the materials to define the catwalk, the backstage and the threshold in between. The malleability of steel is translated into creating two main elements that slide and interconnect when the show starts.

SUBURBAN HOUSING Project Description Creating a compound of villas in Jumeirah, while addressing the existing urban conditions. The project was challenging in creating pleasant homes with specific requirements from the client while respecting the limited available areas. Skills in developing design development and construction documents was explored along with a focus on detailing.

AUS, ARC 402 STUDIO VI, SPRING 2013

RESEARCH CENTER AND HOUSING UNITS

Project Description Designing a research centre with a faculty housing units. The project focused on creating a strong connection between the architecture and the natural environment in terms of form and materiality. Transparency of spaces was a tool to connect the users to the surrounding environment. The position of the two buildings intentionally created a glimpse of the view at the entry and then a panoramic view closer to the cliff.

STRUCTURAL STUDIES Project Description Structural studies and explorations through 3D modelling of an existing roof structure of Tianjin Railways Station to understand how the structural elements of the roof fit together. The project also challenged moving away from a typical design of a wind tower by using the structural elements to incorporate an observation center.

MATERIAL EXPLORATIONS Project Description Exploring the properties of concrete and wood. Using fabric in the form work, a pattern was created on the surface of the concrete to allow for the water accumulated from the rain to run down the buildings in a controlled manner.

ARTIST HOUSE AND STUDIO Project Description Designing an artists house and studio in Al bastakiya, which is a heritage area in Dubai, UAE. Studies of the context and building materials that were used in the area influenced the ordering system of the design and the selection of the materials. However, a contemporary approach was pursued. Defining private and public zones was explored throughout the project, considering that the space partially becomes public when an event is held.

RETREAT

AUS, ARC 201 STUDIO I, FALL 2010

Project Description The project focused on creating an entry sequence experience for the visitors and connecting the architecture to the landscape and the existing conditions. A reflective pool with a walkway shaded by a louver system created a pleasant entry experience to engage the users with the landscape. The shaded seating area provided a direct view to the cliff from one side and to the band of trees from the other side.
