2020 Competition / Lighting & Product Design Honourable Mention in: ‘In Memory of Nazım Hikmet: Writing to Drawing Design Competition’ with Gül Ağaoğlu Çobanlar Exhibited by Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects
The competition is organised in memory of the great Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet, to commemorate his life and poetry. The scope is to make a design reflecting the atmosphere, feeling and/or meaning from a selected work of the poet.
A section of his poem Kerem Gibi (Like Kerem) becomes the design influence for a sculptural luminaire/light installation. In the poem, a striking allegory of burning and sacrificing oneself for the society and ideals, to enlighten and fight the darkness/ignorance plays the central role in depicting Nazım Hikmet’s devotion to socialist ideals. Within this context, the design is composed of a constellation of LEDs around a deformed glass sphere, abstracting a vision of individuals gathered around an ideal. Light coming from LEDs in multiple direction is then reflected through this central sphere and scattered within the whole space. To accentuate the feeling of union, which is a common theme in Nazım Hikmet’s poetry, LEDs are activated one by one with visitors entering the space, creating a gradual increase in the illuminance and reflections. Thus, lighting one by one to change the darkness into light...
