Creating a Culture of Connoisseurship

budist’s Mission

Celebrating the people, producers, and places that define cannabis culture and heritage while bridging the knowledge gap between consumers and brands.

Central to this mission is fostering a culture of connoisseurship - an approach rooted in deep appreciation, interactive education, and meticulous evaluation of cannabis products.

By elevating one's relationship with this remarkable plant, Budist is raising the bar for product quality and diversity, ensuring that people from all walks of life find the very best cannabis products for their needs.

have drawn inspiration from established industries like wine, coffee, tea and craft beer. Just as wine lovers distinguish between the different styles of Burgundy, or coffee enthusiasts identify the nuances of Ethiopian versus Sumatran beans, cannabis connoisseurs may celebrate the plant’s diverse expressions, shaped by terroir, cultivation methods, and craftsmanship.”

By shifting the focus to quality and diversity, Budist encourages a more sophisticated perspective on cannabis. This transformation was inspired by the evolution of wine appreciation in the 20th century, driven by figures like Robert Parker, whose revolutionary 100-point rating system demystified wine for consumers, emphasizing quality over other metrics like price and prestige. Similarly, Budist employs a 100-point scoring system to evaluate cannabis, giving consumers a practical way to navigate an often-overwhelming market with confidence.

Budist’s ratings are also collaborative, blending insights from its team of professional critics including certified Ganjiers, competition judges, and category-specific experts with reviews from everyday consumers. By combining professional assessments with peer-to-peer recommendations, Budist democratizes cannabis connoisseurship, and encourages dialogue among critics, consumers, and producers, creating a dynamic ecosystem of shared knowledge and appreciation.

But Budist is more than just a ratings & review platform, says Sheltraw.

“Budist is a community for cannabis lovers. Through online discussions, in-person tasting events, and insightful reviews, we’re creating spaces for enthusiasts to connect, converse, and share their passion.”

One recent example of this is explored in detail throughout this issue, continues Sheltraw. “We recently hosted our first-ever Friendsgiving celebration a multi-course, multisensory dining experience that showcased some of California’s best cannabis products. Pairings were thoughtfully curated by our Budists and presented to guests in ways that reimagine our relationship to the plant.”

Budist Friendsgiving Weed, Friends and Seriously Good Eats

If you are working in the cannabis industry now or have been for any amount of time, you understand firsthand how much the industry is struggling. Even still, once in a while, you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right. No apologies for the shameless Dead quote, but it’s hard out there right now. Everyone is feeling the pinch. But not all is lost. Those who continue to endure and those who continue to persist are making strides in carrying our industry to its rightful place in society and continue to normalize cannabis through collaborative, unique and memorable experiences.

I can’t think of a better trio than friends, good food and top-notch cannabis. So when the Budist team invited Fat Nugs to their Friendsgiving celebration, I loaded up the Prius and buzzed down the I-10 from Phoenix to the Pleasure Med campus in West Hollywood and checked out what the event was all about.

The First Budist Friendsgiving Location: Pleasure Med

The setting of the Friendsgiving event was at the Pleasure Med dispensary in West Hollywood. Pleasure Med is a combination of an apothecary-style dispensary, a full-service bar called the Hind, and an upscale restaurant, called Irie, serving world-class culinary delights. The setting was beautifully decorated with a cozy harvest motif and had me missing my Midwestern roots.

Ambiance: Classy Stoner Vibes

Vibes were chill and classy, yet super relaxed. Rich fall colors and natural décor softened the scene. Beginning the evening, there was a selection of beverages offered including a couple of local wines from Enriquez Estate, Three Spirits Botanical Alchemy, and an array of terpene-infused sparkling waters from Terpene Belt Farms.

Pregaming with Mocktails and Terp Pairings

The Hind is where the evening kicked off. Crisp, cool wines from Enriquez Estate, and terpene pairings with Claudio along with an interactive Terpene Belt Farms activation with aromas expert Jamie Evans, aka The Herb Somm (@theherbsomm). My new friend, Silamith McLean (@silasmith), from Three Spirit Sharp served up a variety of their non-alcoholic elixirs. Delicious and definitely recommended to those looking for alcohol alternatives.

The Food: Dinner, Dessert & Dabs

Each room was thoughtfully filled with different experiences.

Upstairs at the Irie, we were seated family style and served a wonderful four-course meal sewn together with expertly selected cannabis pairings each guided by Budist’s with their extensive knowledge of assessing flavors.

The Budist Friendsgiving event was co-hosted by Cannabis Culture Club, Fruit + Flower, and The HerbSomm, and presented guests with a multi-stage, multi-course tasting experience that explored curated pairings of gourmet food, craft beverage, and an assortment of cannabis products. The tasting format was built around the themes of SIP, SAVOR and SMOKE. Below is a list of each brand and accompanying course for each of these themes.

Sip

As guests arrived at Pleasuremed’s Hind Bar, we welcomed them to Friendsgiving with an assortment of beverages designed to set the stage for the culinary feast ahead. Integrating wine, cannabis, and nonalcoholic beverages into the experience is a cornerstone of the Budist ethos, where we believe that each of these products deserves a space at the table.

EnriquezWines

Enriquez Estate Wines is a family-owned microwinery in Sonoma County’s Petaluma Gap and served up their 2021 Dry Muscat and 2015 Tempranillo for guests to enjoy throughout the evening. Due to regulatory and compliance requirements, wine and cannabis are not able to be consumed side-by-side in licensed consumption lounges, but serving up these delicious vinified offerings showcased the ways these two agricultural products are more alike than not.

The terroir of the Petaluma Gap is known for producing wines with intensity and robust flavors thanks to the stress the vines experience due to the windy conditions, vast shifts in temperature, and maritime influence of the region. Artisanally crafted by winemaker Cecilia Enriquez, these wines were beautifully received by Friendsgiving guests

ThreeSpirit

An innovative brand in the nonalcoholic beverage space, Three Spirit joined our Friendsgiving at each stage of the evening. Guests were welcomed with a glass of Three Spirit Sharp, a bright and aromatic white sparkling wine alternative reminiscent of Vinho Verde. Featuring California poppy, B, C, and D vitamins and hydrating amino acids, the uplifting and slightly green profile offered an invigorating welcome

During the dinner, the Three Spirit Livener elixir served as the base for the Livener Watermelon cannacocktail featuring CQ brands’ Watermelon Cucumber seltzer As a nonalcoholic beverage, Three Spirit offers a unique opportunity for mainstream beverage brands to integrate into the cannabis space, which Silamith Maclean, Sales Director for the brand, says is an exciting new consumer base for the brand to tap into.

As a post-dinner digestif, we served up the Three Spirit Nightcap, featuring relaxing Valerian root, terpenes, and adaptogenic lemon balm. With an herbaceous flavor profile, Nightcap relied on the power of plants to help guests unwind at the end of a long meal.

CannabisQuencher

Budists Jeremy Allen and Christina Cassidy served up tableside infusions featuring CQ Watermelon Cucumber Seltzer.

With its bright and invigorating flavor profile and 5mg. of THC, the CQ Watermelon Cucumber Seltzer demonstrated the mixability that cannabis-infused beverages offer in the realm of fine dining. Paired with the bright and flavorful crispy Brussels Sprouts topped with nutty pumpkin seeds, the CQ Livener cannacocktail was infused tableside by our team of Budists, and guests enjoyed the remainder of the seltzer as a sipper throughout the evening.

TerpeneBeltFarms

Water-soluble terpenes are the flavor and aroma agents that enhance a wide variety of commercial-grade food and beverages, and Terpene Belt Farms was on hand to showcase the ways in which these important aromatic compounds play a role in the flavor and effects of food and drinks - not just cannabis. During the welcome hour, Budist Jamie Evans, AKA The HerbSomm, led a terpene demonstration that explored the nuances and aromas in the Terpene Belt Farms Orange, Tropical, and Dessert expressions. In order to showcase the ways Terpene Belt Farms’ products are used in commercial F&B, we served it up as a “housemade La Croix,” infusing carafes of water with Citrus terpenes for a light and refreshing accompaniment to the rich and decadent cornbread and counterbalance to the bitter chicory salad in the first course.

Orange Terpene Belt Farm infused seltzer was served as an accompaniment to cornbread with seasonal butter and an apple chicory salad.

Smoke

In addition to exploring the nuanced world of beverages, Friendsgiving guests enjoyed an assortment of California’s best cannabis products as pairings throughout the evening. From high-quality solventless concentrates to flower and pre-rolls, each product featured during the Friendsgiving dinner was thoughtfully paired by our team of Budists to either pair similar or contrasting flavors.

PAX

Device company PAX kicked the evening off with their custom engraving station, where guests had the chance to personalize their PAX Era vaporizer batteries with words and logos of their choice. Friendsgiving attendees loved this hands-on laserdriven activation and carried the PAX experience to the first course of the dinner with a pairing featuring PAX Blueberry OG Live Rosin with Diamonds, which offered ripe fruit-forward flavors that matched beautifully with the bright-meetsbitter flavor in the Lady Windrose Apples and chicory salad.

AutumnBrands

Rounding out the first course, Autumn Brands’ Sativa Slay citrusy notes offered an uplifting counterpoint to the rich, warm, and toasty notes of the cornbread topped with seasonal butter. This women-owned Central Coast brand uses sustainable greenhouse cultivation practices across its portfolio.

Nasha

Nasha’s Dark Rainbow offered a sold pairing with one of the most intensely flavorful dishes on the menu: Collard greens in a smoky, rich bone broth. Bold and peppery, the Dark Rainbow strain’s intense background stood up to deep, nuanced smoke notes, guests also enjoyed the functionality of the allin-one live rosin vaporizer from one of Humboldt’s most respected hash brands.

PacificStone

Pacific Stone’s GMO and 805 Glue offered two robust pairings with our main course, matching with the turkey meatloaf and Japanese yams atop herby coconut yogurt, respectively. The umami-rich turkey meatloaf offered a robust counterbalance to the PacStone’s pungent, earthy GMO, while the 805 Glue’s floral-meets-woody flavor profile matched the subtle sweetness of the yams in a subtle, intriguing way.

Savor

No Friendsgiving feast is complete without an array of desserts, so we ended the evening with an assortment of delicious treats for guests to enjoy.

ScratchBaked

Non-infused samples of the Scratch Baked goodies were on hand for guests to savor, including a crispy rice marshmallow bar, coconut macaroon cookie bar, mocha brownie bar, and snickerdoodle cookie bar. Known for its high-quality baked goods and sweet treats, Scratch Baked is not only a leader in California cannabis edibles, but also manufactures traditional baked goods.

Poundcake'sFarm

Known as one of L.A.’s leading indoor cultivators, our team matched the bright cherry notes in Poundcake’s Farm Lemon Cherry OG with an assortment of fresh fruit, whipped cream, and of course - lemon poundcake, for a dessert that was an homage to a brand of such impressive quality. With master cultivator Ian Carson in attendance, Poundcake’s beautiful craft flower offered the perfect finale to a flower- and flavorful evening.

Kanha

After an evening of decadence, the Kanha candy bar offered a touch of whimsy and unique flavor profiles. From the soft, chewy, and sour Kanha Belts, to the candy-cated chocolate Minis, guests enjoyed a fill-your-own-bag candy experience that provided plenty of sweet treats to go, keeping the mood festive and bright well past Friendsgiving.

Solventless(DabBar)

HeritageHash

Known as the world’s first public hashery, where visitors can watch the artistry of the hash making process firsthand, Heritage Hash Co. brought a taste of the Emerald Triangle to Los Angeles. Hashmaker Cherryblossom Belle was on hand to represent the legendary family-owned operator and served up hash in her unique hookah presentation. A protegee of legendary hashishier Frenchy Cannoli, Belle’s dedication to preserving the legacy of hash was a testament to the brand’s ethos.

Rosintech

Rosin Tech Labs served up a mid-course palate cleanser with their freshly-pressed Grapaya, which offered guests a sweet, fruit-forward solventless-tasting experience in a Carta e-rig. This clean and flavorful taste was served up by Budist Camran Hussein, AKA Yung Slabby, a co-host in Friendsgiving and partner in Cannabis Culture Club, which specializes in solventless fine dining experiences.

JettyExtracts

One of California’s longest-standing brands, Jetty Extracts offered its fresh and flavorful Banana Punch, which offered an alternative pairing to the Japanese sweet potatoes. The tropical notes in the Banana Punch played off the kiss of coconut present in the herbed yogurt sauce and helped lift up the starchy sweetness of the potato.

Founder, Fruit + Flower, co-founder, Mogu Magu

Renowned culinary cannabis expert and content creator Christina Wong has been building community through cannabis and food on her social media platform and weekly newsletters, and her work bridges real-life community with fellow Budist Wendy Zeng, with whom she launched Mogu Magu, an AAPI-focused collective and events series that celebrates the intersection of cannabis and Asian cultures.

ChristinaWong

Q: You’re known for being one of the industry’s leading cannabis culinary experts/tastemakers. Why are you passionate about this category and how do you apply your expertise to your role at Budist?

Christina: Food is something that we all universally understand and bond over. If someone can understand where their food comes from, they should consider their cannabis in the same way. Using culinary as a way to teach people how to choose better cannabis is a natural pathway to educating and elevating the category. When I started working in cannabis, I noticed that there was a knowledge gap that felt similar to how the organic food movement changed how people eat and shop for food. I created Fruit + Flower to connect those dots and use my decades of experience in food, beverage, and hospitality to show people how to view their cannabis products in the same way.

As a Budist, I review cannabis flower and edibles with the same level of taste and quality criteria that I’d make buying produce at the market. What are the ingredients? Where was it sourced? How was it made? Who made it? Does it look appetizing?

Q: How did you incorporate your culinary expertise and community-first approach into the Friendsgiving event and what did you find most interesting about working with Pacific Stone, Pax, Autumn Brands, Poundcake’s Farm, and Nasha?

Christina: I loved how the Friendsgiving event gave guests the opportunity to mindfully consider and pair the various cannabis offerings from Nasha, PAX, Autumn Brands, Pacific Stone, and Poundcake’s Farm. As each dish came out to the tables, every detail from the aromas, tasting notes, and effects were thoughtfully paired with each dish. I loved the abundance and that guests could choose their own adventure.

CamranHussein

Co-founder, Cannabis Culture Club

Also known as Yung Slabby, Camran has become a fixture in the concentrates community, and has worked to develop a series of events that bring concentrates into the realm of fine dining at Cannabis Culture Club, where he has partnered with a variety of chefs to explore the pairing possibilities of food and solventless concentrates.

Friendsgiving co-host, Yung Slabby, greeting guests as they enjoy the dab bar inside Pleasuremed’s Irie Restaurant & Lounge.

CamranHussein

Q: You’re known for being one of the industry’s leading concentrates experts/tastemakers. Why are you passionate about this sector of the industry and how do you apply your expertise to your role at Budist?

Camran: Concentrates represent the pinnacle of cannabis refinement and innovation, which is what drew me to this sector of the industry in the first place. They capture the essence of the plant its terpenes, cannabinoids, and unique profiles in a way that truly honors the craft of cannabis cultivation. My passion lies in the artistry and precision behind concentrates, from the meticulous extraction processes to the incredible variety of textures, flavors, and effects they offer.

At Budist, I channel this passion into my role as a professional critic, focusing on solventless cannabis concentrates. I write in-depth product reviews that not only inform but also help consumers appreciate the complexity and quality of what they’re experiencing. Beyond that, I host immersive experiences that bring concentrates to life, allowing people to connect with this sector of the industry on a deeper level. It’s about sharing my knowledge and love for concentrates in a way that makes them approachable, exciting, and unforgettable.

Q: How did you incorporate your concentrates expertise into the Friendsgiving event, and what did you find most interesting about working with Rosin Tech, Jetty, and Heritage Hash Co.?

Camran: For Friendsgiving, I wanted to create an experience that truly celebrated the artistry of solventless cannabis concentrates while fostering a sense of community. Representing Cannabis Culture Club, I incorporated my expertise to curate a lineup that showcased the unique qualities of each brand Rosin Tech, Jetty, and Heritage Hash Co while educating attendees on what makes their products stand out. From the textures and terpene profiles to the innovations in their processes, I ensured that each product was presented in a way that connected people to the craft and passion behind them.

CamranHussein

Working with these brands was particularly exciting because they each bring something distinct to the table. Rosin Tech is known for its dedication to the art of rosin extraction, delivering products that are as clean as they are flavorful. Jetty stands out with its commitment to purity and innovation, crafting products that push boundaries while staying true to the plant. Heritage Hash Co., on the other hand, embraces the timeless traditions of hash-making, offering products that feel both nostalgic and elevated.

Q: Tell us about Cannabis Culture Club and what inspired you to create this business

Camran: Cannabis Culture Club was born out of a desire to create a space where cannabis enthusiasts and the industry could connect on a deeper level. It’s more than just a business it’s a community-driven platform that celebrates the culture, artistry, and craftsmanship behind cannabis. My inspiration came from recognizing a gap in the industry for experiences that go beyond the transactional. I wanted to create something immersive and educational, where people could come together to learn, share, and celebrate what makes cannabis so special

Our events and initiatives focus on highlighting the people and brands that are pushing boundaries, particularly in the realm of solventless concentrates. Cannabis Culture Club is about fostering meaningful connections not just between consumers and products but also within the community itself Whether it’s ith som to ele

JamieEvans

Co-founder, The HerbSomm

Jamie Evans, aka The HerbSomm, is a 4 x author, certified sommelier, and entrepreneur specializing in cannabis, CBD, food, recipes, wine, and the cannaculinary world. Her culinary-meets-cannabis blog and lifestyle brand focuses on the gourmet side of the cannabis industry.

Friendsgiving co-host, Jamie Evans, showcases her terpene sensory experience with a medley of fruits and botanicals paired with terpene-infused sparkling elixirs by Terpene Belt Farms.

JamieEvans

Q: You’re known for being one of the industry’s leading beverage experts/tastemakers. Why are you passionate about this category and how do you apply your expertise to your role at Budist?

Jamie: From the time I started my career in the wine and spirits world, I’ve been fascinated with cannabis drinks. They capture the imagination, opening a new door to how we can enjoy our favorite beverages on an elevated level. Cannabis drinks are also a fantastic alternative to alcohol. With the new low-dose options that are now available, these beverages can offer a similar experience to drinking a glass of wine or a beer, but without the hangover Whether you love CBD or THC, there are many new avenues to explore when it comes to cannabis drinks, which is a topic I cover at Budist. From cannabis-infused seltzers to apéritifs, my role at Budist is to help consumers discover this category on a deeper level and provide feedback and recommendations to help others find the best beverages available in market.

Q: How did you incorporate your beverage expertise into the Friendsgiving event and what did you find most interesting about working with Terpene Belt Farms?

Jamie: For the Budist Friendsgiving event, I had the opportunity to host a terpene sensory experience where guests could evaluate the flavors and aromas most often found in cannabis. Just as we do as sommeliers in the wine world to train our senses, I integrated fresh items such as lemons, lavender, rose petals, rosemary, cinnamon, and black pepper for guests to smell and taste. To enhance this aroma training, I paired each example with a concentrated terpene oil provided by Terpene Belt Farms and worked with the TBF team to provide terpene-infused sparkling water to highlight the cannabis notes on the palate. I’ve always enjoyed educating in this way - it’s fun, interactive, and helps others better understand the complexities of cannabis and connoisseurship.

JamieEvans

Q: Tell us about The HerbSomm and what inspired you to create this business.

Jamie: My relationship with cannabis began in college while studying wine and viticulture at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. After studying wine sensory evaluation and as a Certified Sommelier, it occurred to me that I could use these same principles with cannabis, which was exciting! However, back then, the conversation around cannabis was a lot different than what we are witnessing today, so my cannabis use was purely recreational.

It wasn’t until early 2017 that I began using cannabis for medical purposes. I had witnessed a terrible car accident and couldn’t sleep. I didn’t want to take pharmaceutical drugs, so I turned to cannabis, which was a more natural solution that helped me work through the trauma. This amazing plant has the power to heal the mind, body and soul this is why I decided to come into the industry.

In March 2017, I launched my company, The HerbSomm. Given my wine background and my love for the gourmet world, it seemed like the culinary side to cannabis was a natural fit, so I drove in. I quickly became immersed in the small but growing canna-culinary community. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to write four published cannabis cookbooks, launch my own cannabis-infused wine company known as Herbacée, host several culinary cannabis events from coast to coast, and launch a mobile cannabis bartending business called The Herbal Cocktail Co. While wine will always be my first love, cannabis has been my muse.
