lemmikki collection I finally made it to Africa. I have dreamed about traveling to Africa for so many years and last spring I was finally on my way. My first destination was Cape Town which is a rather metropolitan beach side city. It is a city nestled between the mountains and the ocean and wherever you go you can always see both. A truly beautiful city. I spent 3 lovely days in Cape Town, and I did a lot of eating the most delicious, diverse and affordable food, and yes, of course I enjoyed the most delicious wines. Mostly, I was so very happy and inspired to find real unique and vibrant crafts and designs in Cape Town that felt very special from what I usually see back home in the U.S. — unique and colorful artistic voices. We stayed at a sweet little place called La Grenadine, which was secretly tucked away in a vibrant neighborhood. Every morning we enjoyed long , homemade breakfasts in the garden prior to exploring the city. La Grenadine is a sweet little charming guesthouse, that felt like our home away from home, a little gem. I spent most mornings in my Esme caftan. Esme is a simple sewing pattern from my book “Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style” so you can easily have one too.

lemmikki collection colors Lemmikki is a collection mainly made up of patterns and motifs created in one shade of gray or another; light grays, dark grays and blueish grays. All these different grays are so easy to combine together, to create elegant monochromatic quilts, or timeless garments that are easy to use together with pretty much anything else in your closet. I have also included some really bright and sunny accent colors in this collection. Sunny and warm oranges and classic leafy green: like all the citrus fruits and flowers around me in Cape Town.

aina pillow I am really excited about this quilted cushion design and I am very happy to be able to share it with you. Adding new cushions and changing old ones is probably the easiest way to update or transform a space in your home. Quilted pillows adds visual interest and texture, but it is very important to me that they are still modern, clean and simple in execution and not too busy in its color scheme. For me, less is always, always more!

Fabric buckets to store hair brushes and products, guest towels or soaps, a patchwork bath mat lined with terry cloth to add some extra soft, cushion under your feet. I also really like how a simple border adds new life and personality to simple white towels. I will share the sewing instructions for the fabric buckets, the patchwork bathmat and the zipper pouch on my social media, so please sign up on my mailing list at www.jansdotter.com if you want to learn more.

yellow brick road quilt Back home in Brooklyn again after my exotic travels, I was happy to receive some wonderful quilts made from the Lemmikki collection. I really enjoy how quite different they are... Different moods and styles. Yellow Brick Road is a quilt pattern created by Terry Atkinson of Atkinson Designs and it is really a wonderful project for a beginner. There are many ways to make this design your own: from fabric and color choices, to adding a thicker or thinner border, and choosing a great binding design. I like mine done in all gray colors, with an added yellow pop color for the binding... The devil is in the details as they say!

After a 3 hour long bus ride from Johannesburg we reached our destination of Baobab Batik in Swaziland. Swaziland impressed me with its gorgeous, lush landscapes, the warm red earth and the calm, blue gray mountains created such wonderful views to rest my eyes on. On the first day we were met with an incredibly dramatic rainstorm that I will never forget, but the remaining days were so sunny and nice. I also learned that pineapples do not grow on trees, it took me “only” 45 years to figure that out... BAH! Together with a group I spent a week in Swaziland, facilitating a design workshop but also spending some time learning how to batik. We spent 3 days with a women’s cooperative called Baobab Batik where we immersed ourselves in the craft. Simile is one of the women who works at the cooperative. She has 2 young children and supports them and herself on her own thanks to her work at Baobab Batik. Every day she walks those red country roads to the bus that takes her between the women’s cooperative and her home. Simile is wearing a dress design called Pilvi from my book “Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style” Pilvi is actually a coat pattern, but I modified it a bit by adding a Velcro closure all along the front, and it became an easy to wear dress instead. And it looks so lovely on Simile. A most wonderful model for the Pilvi.

wiley way quilt Wiley Way (64 x 80) is vibrant and graphically very strong. Simple 60 degree angles are easy to piece and they create a fun wave across the quilt. A wonderfully bold statement. Designed by Sassafrass Lane Designs.

esme top It probably goes without saying that traveling is a great source of inspiration for me. I love interacting with other makers in countries all over the world and meet people and makers from other cultures, learn from them, share what I know and keep collecting bits and bobs of design and motif ideas along the way. I feel that my relationship with the great continent of mother Africa has just started and I look forward to future trips, when and where I do not know yet. Here I am wearing an “Esme” top that is made out of Lemmiikki fabric. The Esme top is a sewing pattern you can find in my book “Lotta Jansdotter Everyday Style”. This top is a winner when it comes to travel. It packs easily and doesn’t really wrinkle much... It can be combined with pants or skirts of all kinds of styles and shapes. It is so easy, fits well AND it is really easy to sew as well!

Spending time batiking at Baobab was incredibly fun and also a new challenge for me. I enjoyed that we completely got to immerse ourselves in this medium for three intense days, with all new techniques and methods. You apply a melted wax on your fabric, creating designs and marks using mostly brushes, but also other tools. Then you dye your fabric, and all the areas where there is no wax will take the dye color, and all the areas where the wax is applied will not dye. I am still getting comfortable with understanding the dyes better and what works best for the design work you want to do. I kept everything very simple, as always, and perhaps... A little bit too simple? Batiking is a process that thrives when textures, many colors and layers come alive... So I feel that this is a technique I want to spend much more time with in the future. I experimented on my own fabrics, adding patterns and dyes to the gray Lemmikki collection and had a good time doing that — layering patterns on patterns in a way that I never work. It was opening a door to something new for me.

boabab batik The ladies that worked in the “dye house” at Boabab Batik is a very closely knit group that loves to play around and dance. Busisiwe, Bonsile, Zandileand Nelly work very hard, mixing big vats of dyes and move heavy wet fabrics on an ongoing basis, yet they keep those big smiles on their faces. They are a fun, and at times cheeky group of women and they shared a very cheerful vibe with all of us there while we were working, testing and messing up. I made a pile of aprons from the Lemmikki collection for the ladies that they were very happy to model, they were also very quick to add their personal touch to the shoot, with their awesome and practical head dress . I tried that way as well… But nah... I dunno... It didn’t do justice on me I think. I was immensely impressed with what they accomplish and achieve at Baobab Batik, it is a wonderful cooperative started by the founder Els Hooft and managed by Signhild Brosvik Thorne. It is a most powerful and meaningful venture, something to aspire too.
