Building on my first collection of colourful basics, Volume 2 includes patterns I designed for UPPERCASE magazine but with a dual purpose: to grace the publication’s masthead and spine, and to be the starting point of beautiful fabric designs. Repeated motifs of dots, dashes and diamonds make up this pretty graphic collection—with a little vintage feed sack inspiration thrown in as well! The optimistic colour palette pairs well with both vintage and contemporary designs.

I’ve always loved vintage things— in fact, a few years ago I wrote a book about the graphic history of typewriters. And though the clickety clack of machines will always hold a special place in my heart, lately my vintage obsessions have turned to old textiles, feed sacks and sewing haberdashery.
I gave these old sewing baskets a makeover by replacing their tired and torn fabric covers with English paper-pieced prints from Volume 2.

Last summer, I scored a folding knitting basket at a garage sale. At only a couple dollars, I overlooked the stained fabric with a plan to sew a new version someday. This grey and ember Dot Eyes fabric has just the right retro appeal!

I’ve collected button odds and ends for years— a Bakelite, casein and celluloid button arrangement graces the cover of UPPERCASE issue 33, the issue I was designing in tandem with these look book projects.
Although keeping buttons in jars and tins is good for bulk storage, these paperweights highlight some extra special specimens, securely under decorative glass domes.
This pretty purse and pencil case show off the potential of piecing multiple prints into larger patterns.

Here’s the perfect quilt for a busy boy who hopefully isn’t in too much of a hurry to grow up.

B UTTON P ILLOW
A few batches of half-square triangles, a pillow form and some buttons are all the supplies you need to make a patchwork pillow. You can also cover metal buttons with fabric and use them upholstery-style to give some dimension and add interest to a simple square pillow.
