GCSC Online 24th March 2020 OVERVIEW Gary students deserve a quality education. One that allows them to truly be challenged and excel in learning. Students need to know they have support and that they will be held accountable for their own progress. We are recommending online learning where the teacher, student and parent are engaged and empowered in the education process.
GOALS 1.
To activate Gary online education system
2. To make sure our students are not held back due to unforeseen circumstances 3. To activate a citywide hotspot to give all children access to online learning 4. To put computers in every household with school-age children in GCSC Online Learning 5. To address special education needs such as but not limited to emotional disturbance
SPECIFICATIONS We are proposing a curriculum that consists of seven subjects. Reading, Math, Science, History, Language Arts, Writing and Creative Arts. Classes will last 45 minutes and start at 8 a.m. and end at 2:35 p.m. Monday through Friday. We're suggesting 14 Master Teachers who will split the day in half. The responsibility of the master teacher is to pre-record tutorials for each day that will include a questionnaire to be turned in each day by each student. Master Teachers will be required to teach two grades. For instance there will be a teacher teaching Pre-K and kindergarten, a separate teacher teaching first grade and second grade and so on. This format would give us a 7 tier system between Pre-K and 12th grade. To engage our parents, we would ask them to participate by checking their child's work with an answer key sent to them by their child's Master teacher. Many parents long to be a part of the process but they are not familiar with how to teach but would feel more comfortable with helping to look over their children's work and helping them understand and self-correct. We would also
need to enlist a host of teacher assistants who would be available to give 10 minutes to each child to answer any questions concerning their school work daily. In order for the program to be truly effective we wouldn't need 160 staff members to teach an estimate of 5,000 children throughout the school system. Master Teachers will follow a centralized grading system that will give more concise data on where the students stand and the overall school system. Currently the school system is failing academically and even though this seems like a complete disaster to have all of our students out for the rest of the school year with the threat of them having to repeat a grade, I would beg to differ. I believe that this is our moment to seize the opportunity to use everyone within the community, to give everyone a part to play to empower our students, move them ahead and to bridge the learning gaps. This is Gary the Steel City where we are built strong. I believe this is our turn around season. I have attached a second proposal that addresses the need for proper assessments of our students that are dealing with learning disabilities stemmed from emotional disturbances. This would require specialists and I'm proposing that we start with at least five. This would give families the opportunity to take advantage of services that could bring a child with difficult circumstances from a failing standpoint to one who achieves through learning how to cope in their present situations but moreover how to build and grow.
