King Diamond Kim Bendix Petersen, June 14, 1956, Copenhagen, Denmark) is a Grammy-Nominated heavy metal musician known for his striking face painted image. As a vocalist, he is known for his use of falsetto, mixed with mid-range vocals in most of his music. As the frontman for both Mercyful Fate and the eponymous King Diamond, his music has had an influence on many bands across a variety of metal sub-genres. Diamond’s first band, with whom he played guitar, was reportedly called Brainstorm. Feeling creatively dissatisfied, Diamond left Brainstorm and began singing with local Danish hard rock band Black Rose. It was during this time in Black Rose that Diamond began experimenting with horror themed theatrics as well as shaping

the malevolent quasi-Satanic stage persona that he would become known for in the future. In 1980, he left Black Rose and joined the punk-metal band Brats. It was in Brats that Diamond met the three musicians (Hank Shermann, Michael Denner, Timi Hansen) that would join with Diamond in 1980 and become Mercyful Fate. Because of the group’s stage presence, make-up and occult lyrics, their musical style is somewhat reminiscent of heavy metal, power metal, progressive metal and rock opera. Following the 1984 release of Don’t Break the Oath and the subsequent tour (which saw them play in the U.S. for the first time), Diamond split ways with Mercyful Fate, as a result of frustration over creative differences with Hank Shermann. With him, he took two of his bandmates (Hansen and Denner) to pursue a solo career under his

own name.Mercyful Fate re-united in 1992 (while King Diamond simultaneously continued his solo career), but were disbanded by Diamond in 1999, as King decided to put Mercyful Fate in retirement and continue on with his solo career. In an interview with Metal Israel in 2005, King elaborated on the decision to retire Mercyful Fate, as he claimed that “it’s impossible for me to live off Mercyful Fate... I can still live from King Diamond.” In 2005 King said that while M.F. still has a contract and could record another record, it would have to be done only as a hobby since Fate does not earn enough money to support itself.


With his solo act, KING DIAMOND often uses the lyrics and music to create characters and tell stories in the form of concept albums. Albums meld together as one story (features present already in the Fatal Portrait album), but carry to more intricate levels (with the albums, Abigail, “Them”, and The Eye) to the dramatic story (Conspiracy). Typical of both the Abigail and Conspiracy tours was how King Diamond re-enacted much of the scenarios on stage, using special effects in the show much in the style of metal-musician Alice Cooper, of whom Diamond is a fan. King Diamond albums also often feature dueling guitar solos. On the CD inserts, the performer of each solo is credited, often using a symbol. In 2001, King Diamond worked out a deal with the band Usurper to sing backup vocals

on the song “Necronemesis” in exchange for them shifting their recording schedule around to accommodate the recording of Abigail II: The Revenge. In 2004, King Diamond contributed vocals to “Sweet Dreams”, which was the final track on the album of Dave Grohl’s heavy metal side project Probot. In late 2005, King Diamond appeared on the Roadrunner United - The All-Star Sessions album, contributing vocals to the song “In the Fire”, which featured multiple Roadrunner Records musicians (past and present) working together to create individual songs. King Diamond also guested on the Cradle of Filth song “Devil Woman” in late 2005. In April 2006 King reunited with old friend Mikkey Dee (current Motörhead drummer) at a sold-out gig at Kåren in Gothenburg, Sweden.


In 2001 King referred to Dee as “one of the best [drummers] of all time and that’s something that has bothered us since he left.” King Diamond released his new album, Give Me Your Soul...Please, on June 26, 2007. Following the release in December the band received a Grammy nomination in the “Best Metal Performance” category for the track “Never Ending Hill”. He was forced to cancel an upcoming United States tour due to a herniated disk, causing severe back pain, which puts him in intense pain almost all of the time.”. He attributes the problem to the long stressful hours spent working on the album. ON STAGE, Diamond uses a trademark microphone handle consisting of two femur bones in the shape of a cross. A live trademark was also Melissa, a full human skeleton which Diamond

would sing to. In the mid-1980s Melissa’s skull was stolen after a performance in the Netherlands. It was claimed to have been finally returned in 2006.; however, this was denied by King Diamond himself. Kiss bassist Gene Simmons claims to have sent Diamond a cease-and-desist letter over Diamond’s makeup design, which Diamond complied with.Diamond has changed the design of his makeup often over the years. With Conspiracy, he wore a mesh of black and white line war paint, with some red “blood” made to look like a wound coming out of his forehead. With his album The Puppet Master, he used very little white and mainly had black inverted crosses going up and down his face.



Satanism Despite numerous claims otherwise, Peter H. Gilmore, The High Priest in The Church Of Satan, has confirmed in an interview on the news show “The Hour” that King Diamond is in fact a member of the Church (LaVeyan Satanism is an atheistic cult influenced by Nietzsche and other individualist philosophers, and should not be confused with Theistic Satanism and/ or Devil Worship). During a spring 1984 interview with British heavy metal magazine Kerrang! correspondent Dave Dickson, who, after some introductory remarks and questions about the then-current Mercyful Fate album Don’t Break The Oath, took Diamond to task regarding his Satanic beliefs.[citation needed] Dickson made frequent references to infamous occultist Aleister Crowley, by whom Diamond denied being influenced. Diamond expressed his admiration of Anton Szandor LaVey (founder of The Church of Satan in San Francisco in 1966) in the interview, which has been cited by some as influential in the demise of Mercyful Fate (although Diamond has always denied this). In the same interview he claimed to have cursed Manowar, as Fate had briefly toured as a support act to Manowar in the UK, and there were personality conflicts between the two bands. He adorns himself with inverted crosses, the sigil of Baphomet (from the LaVeyan perspective) and has written lyrics openly hostile to Christianity (as evidenced in “The Oath” with lyrics including “I deny Jesus Christ, The Deceiver, and I abjure the Christian faith holding in contempt the whole of its works”). However, with the albums released under his own name, he has downplayed the overt Satanism in favour of a “horror movie” approach, though he still wears inverted crosses as jewelery and makeup. In an interview from 2006, King Diamond reveals that he does not follow any specific religion, and expresses concern that religion has led so many people to kill and destroy each other. According to himself, he has problems comprehending why religion has caused so much death and destruction, when it is logically impossible to prove the presence or absence of any god. He reveals that he has reached a point in his life where he has completely given up believing in anything religious and that he simply does not know what to answer when asked whether he is a Satanist or not.

Look at the flame and say the rhyme. The end is near, no more pain. Ah, you’re free! As the candle melts away the spirit of the candle girl emerges from the flame, she doesn’t seem the same. With a smile on her face she starts to speak.

“My mother was obsessed by evil jealousy, she didn’t want nobody to even look at Molly. She kept me locked up in this attic ‘till I died. Only 4 years old, my story left untold.” Oh, Molly...Oh, Molly. “Mother was struck by this infallible idea. If she could paint my portrait i would remain immortal and i could hang downstairs above the fireplace. A little girl in lace, not a single trace of crime. Each day and night she worked and autumn turned to spring. For every stroke she painted a little life was ended. At last I felt so weak I could not even speak. But in that fatal portrait my spirit came to life again.” Oh, Molly. That night i made the portrait speak in evil tongue: You’re gonna go beyond too, may pain and death bestow you. She grabbed a book and spoke aloud an ancient rhyme while she burned the portrait in the candle of fate.” Oh, Molly. “I’ve gotta see ma.” She’s wearing white again, but colours always betray. Don’t look into her eyes, there’s an evil darkness inside.You might see her but she is not here. Leave her alone don’t get too near, one touch and you’ll disappear. What a scream you’ll never hear. When nightfall comes around and the light of day is gone, the dark closes in as the last candle burns out. It’s time to send off your mind on a trip into the land of dreams and mist. Is something wrong, they are lurking in the dark. Heavy breathing but nobody’s there. If that’s what you think you’d better beware. Is something wrong, they are lurking in the dark, watching you. How does it feel to be alone in the dark? How do you know they won’t do any harm? They can see you but you’re... Oh, so blind! Maybe it only appears in your mind.

Abigail must be nailed to her coffin with seven silver spikes,one through each arm, hand, and knee, and let the last of the seven be drawn through her mouth so that she may never arise and cause evil again. Who will be the first? - I, O’Brian of the Black Horsemen...

Through the summer rain of 1845 the coach had finally arrived. To the valley where the crossroads meet below and where all darkness seems to grow. People blame it on the Hill... The hill where no one dares to go... The Mansion... Where no one dares to go. The coach had stopped, and from the window you could see seven horsemen in the night. Miriam Natias and Jonathan la Fey saw the magic in their eyes. They were in for a surprise... The darkness would soon be complete. A horseman came forth from the dark... — We know you’ve come to inherit what’s yours... The Mansion.Take our advise and go back on this night. If you refuse 18 will become 9... Oh, no! — Oh, 18 is 9! Jonathan laughed and said. — Get out of my way. I don’t believe a word you say. The seven horsemen disappeared into the night. — Someday you’ll need our help, my friend... I think poor Jonathan was scared... 18 is actually 9... It stuck in his mind...

Riding up the alley in the rain, no lights to show the way. How could this ever be their home? Through the darkness you could only see a giant shadow that swells to be a house where evil rules at night. And the shadows at the gate, they seemed to be alive. Yeah, the shadows at the gate - Alive. Everything inside was left untouched.

Except for what the rats had got and the dust of time that showed its mark.


Armed with candlelight and open eyes through the dark they fought their way ‘til every room was lit again... And the house began to breathe, it seemed to be alive. Yeah, the house began to breathe, alive. As the candlelight began to fade, And Jonathan said: — Let’s go to bed. The fireplace had ceased to burn... Both were fast asleep before the dawn, dreaming... And they did not know about the shadow... Yeah, the shadow on the wall, it really came alive. Yeah, the shadow on the wall. Sunrise!


The darkness came closer to home on the following night, and Miriam slept like a rock when Jonathan’s face went white... The bedroom was ice cold,but the fire was burning still. The blinding light! The Family Ghost had risen again... The Ghost!

“Don’t be scared. Don’t be scared now, my friend. I am Count de la Fey. Let me take you to the crypt down below where Abigail rests... Let Miriam sleep. She never would understand. Now come, let us go. It’s time to know... Beware of the slippery stairs. You could easily fall and break your neck! Hand me that torch and I will lead the way to the secret in the dark. Take a look into the vault... The sarcophagus of a child! Abigail has been in here for years and years... stillborn. The spirit of Abigail is inside your wife, and there’s only one way you can stop the rebirth of Evil Itself: You must take her life now!”


Count de LaFey uncovered his cheating wife. Nine months of loving and sharing... Oh, it was a bastard child! How could he have been so blind?! — No bastard baby will inherit what’s mine! Another one of her affairs had left him in despair... So he pushed her down the stairs to diew... — No! - She cried... In 1777, on the 7th Day of July... The Countess broke her neck, and the embryo came out dead. Then he burned his beloved wife, and the embryo he gave a name. — Abigail, you must rest in shame! Rest in shame! Obsessed with a strange idea, he wanted to mummify the girl for the future to find. And he did... So he pushed her down the stairs to die... No! She cried... In 1777, on the 7th Day of July...

Nobody’s inside the church, but the bell is ringing. For no reason, the flowers are dying.

Inside the mansion, the air is unbearable -- a rotten smell. In the dining room, the table is set for three.

— Miriam, come here and see what I’ve found. It’s moving! An empty cradle swaying in the air! I did not bring it in here! Did you?!

On the very next morning, when the mist was eaten away by the sun, Miriam grew hour by hour, and Jonathan he cried. He knew the ghost had been telling the truth. So this was 9! The pregnancy would not last overnight! Oh, she started singing a lullaby, rocking the cradle again, and then she said: — I’m having your baby my love... But it wasn’t love! She was possessed... And he knew!

So, there they stood at the top of the stairs... Miriam in the mood... Jonathan was scared. Gazing into the dark, Jonathan saw this glow....For a second, he turned his back, and she was there like a ghost. She pushed him hard and clean... To the bottom of the stairs. — Now we’re finally alone, Miriam. Abigail is here to stay! The birth of Abigail would soon be realized. The second coming of a devil in disguise. And the moon did not shine... It was darker than ever before. On this sacred night The soul of Miriam was crying out in pain. Remembering the day... Arrival in the rain... The pain of labour was so strong that Miriam died. Her final seeing was a pair of yellow eyes. You can still hear her screaming If you’re walking the stairs in July...

Riding from beyond, The seven Horsemen would arrive before the dawn. Servants of the Count when Abigail was born the first time. Oh, no! They found her in the sarcophagus.Baby Abigail was eating... Oh, I cannot tell you... — Take her... and bring her to the chapel in the forest. So go now... The ceremony! And the coffin’s waiting The Black Horsemen. That’s the end of another lullaby... Time has come for me to say goodnight...

She’s here. Missy, listen to what mother says: Now you be good to Grandma; and remember, she’s been away on a long vacation. That goes for uou too King. And stop playing that thing. Answer the door.

You have been gone for far too long. Is this a dream, are you really back? — Let me help you out of the chair, Grandma’. Let me touch you, let me feel... Ahhh, Grandma’ take a look. What do you think of the house and the silvery moon? We are going to repaint the front door soon. Wait till you see your room up in the attic prepared just like you said. Without a bed. You will find Your rocking chair and the tea pot that Missy found. Let me help you out of the chair... Grandma’. There is someone waiting for You, now come along, Missy and Mother, they are dying to meet you. How strange. She’s spoken no word...


MISSY GRANDMA

— I wonder Grandma’! Are you all right? Grandma’ what was it like to be on that holiday site? — Oh, it could have been worse but with “THEM” by my side. In the twilight “THEY” sang all the old lullabies. — Grandma’ who are “THEY”? — Never mind, your dirty little brat. Let us go inside, something’s on “THEIR” mind. “THEY” are still alive, can You feel “THEIR” eyes? Can you feel “THEIR” eyes? Now that you are stuck with me you better be my friend.

Late that night I awoke from my sleep hearing unknown voices laughing insane. Grandma’ was one. Oh, it’s coming from the room next to mine. It’s Grandma’ room... The invisible guests. As i stood there alone in the dark peeking through the keyhole, couldn’t believe my eyes. I’d never seen anything like it, only Grandma’ was inside the room speaking to no one... The invisible guests. Cups were rising in thin air and then emptied on the floor. Suddenly the door was open and Grandma’ said: — Do come in My little friend. Missy and Mother were sleeping downstairs. If they could see me in Grandmother’s chair. Grandmother said — Look Me deep in the eyes. You will forget what you saw here tonight. I will let you in on the secret of this house. The secret of Amon... That’s what we call this house. Now i want you to go back to sleep, now go back to sleep my dear.


...As i turned out the light, Grandma’ came and knocked at My door. — Wake up King, wake up my dear. I am gonna show you about the house of Amon. It is time for tea, it is time again. Even your other is present. We made her sleep in my rocking chair. At first I felt really scared, but there was no reason to. As i saw the knife sneaking out from Grandmother’s dress. Then it cut a tiny wound in My mother’s little hand. It is time for tea, it is time again. Blood was running into the tea pot, then i heard “THEM” laugh. — A bit of this in a cup of tea, is what it takes to set “THEM” free. You will hear “THEM” telling storiesfrom far beyond this earth. What I saw and what I heard made me want to stay and learn. I really hope this dream will neverend, it’s hard to describe the kind of feeling that went on in My mind. A paradise... Hearing “THEIR” stories and feeling “THEIR” warmth we laughed with tears in our eyes from the first cup of tea to the last drop of blood. Nothing seemed to matter at all anymore. My Mother? She didn’t exist to me. Oh, i felt so heavenly. It is time for tea, it is time again.

the last night that we had our tea. That bloody tea which sent us into ecstasy. Yesterday Mother complained, feeling dizzy, all in pain. Mother’s getting weaker, looking paler day by day. As morning came, she could not make it out of bed and Grandma’s spell was getting straight into her head. Not a single word, she didn’t seem to be alive. Getting weaker, looking paler day by day. Then, Missy came in and she led me by the hand. I didn’t want to go. Oh, but I should have known. Mother was barely conscious, why should I care? Just looking forward to the next ordeal, i think I heard my sister begging me to stay. She gave me the phone, so I could call someone for help. I simply let go of her hand, then I cut the wire. Missy was crying as I left them both behind and mother’s getting weaker. Missy shouted at my back:

i was waiting passing time then from the hallway, i saw mother in her nightgown swaying up the stairs, up the stairs, it seemed so unreal. I knew Grandma’ had sent “THEM” again, the invisible friends. A little later in the middle of tea we came close to ecstasy. “THEY” were telling tales from beyond, when Grandma’ rise. She opened the door, and there was Missy seeing mother in Grandmother’s chair, she went into tears. Missy was screaming. — What have You done, what have you done to my Ma? - crying louder now. — We better get rid of her, She’s too young anyway. — It was Grandma’ who spoke. — Bye, bye Missy, be gone forever. The beautiful fireplace in the kitchen will do. I saw Missy struggling in Grandma’ wrinkled hands.




DIE - SHE BROKE AMON - AMON - DIE! “THEY” dropped “THEIR” tea cups. Grandma’ stood. Still forced by invisible hands, Missy went down the stairs as I waved her goodbye. Missy was sobbing away. Will I ever see her again. Bye,bye, bye,bye Missy, don’t be afraid.

Grandma’s room, down the stairs and out of the house. Once outside, I felt my mind begin to fight a battle for control. With the tea pot broken I kind of realized that “THEIR” power was less here, here on the outside. I fell to my knees in haziness and i looked in through the window to the cellar. Things were moving down there. “THEY” were searching for something and “THEY” really found it. The big axe was flying. Flying out through the cellar door up the stairs to the kitchen... Then i passed out the next thing i remember seeing, was the smoke coming from the chimney. I soon realized the smoke i saw was actually... Oh, no! All there was left of Missy and her dress. Poor little girl... The spell was broken, i really felt the change. As my mind and body became one again. The moon was alive with its silvery eye. Staring right into my evil heart. I went back to see if My Grandma’ was still there waiting for me in the attic... Oh, i hate that bitch.

Oh, i was lying... Seeing the look in her eyes, clearing my mind was important. She believed everything i said, and then she asked me if I would help to bring her outside. Oh, I was lucky... — Let us stay for a while. - She said - Bathing ourselves in the moonlight. So there she was, unprotected by “THEM”. I grabbed her cane, and tore it out of her hand. — No way, you’re not going to escape. Now that I’ve got You... Here you will pay for your deeds. Your sick mind has come to an end now. — Stop it. Nowhere to hide, Grandma’ had died alone in the night and “THEY” were waiting for me. Waiting inside, hoping that i would come back in. But I just ran away into the woods, as far as I could. I saw “THEIR” eyes and then I fainted again, going insane. Dreaming that i was one of “THEM”... I hear “THEIR” voices all the time.

I hear “THEM” again, singing twilight symphony, twilight... Grandma’ was dead with an open neck, blood still running from my open mouth. I knew they would blame it, they would blame it all on me. Dr. Landau returned, and I told him the story: — Are You mad or just insane? - I tried anyway — You can take him away now, the boy has lost his mind. — Oh! No, no! Re-issued by Roadrunner in 2004 as a 2-CD set along with “Conspiracy” as part of the Two From the Vaults series.
