from the editor faveMEN started as an addendum to fave Magazine just over a year ago. Our readers expressed great interest in looking at and reading about men’s fashion, products and stories, so we began to introduce more of this requested content, and faveMEN took off! After such an incredible reception with the first few issues, we decided to shift gears and take faveMEN to a whole new level in 2014. I don’t want to talk too much about what’s new, changing or coming up for faveMEN. I’ll let you see that for yourselves. You’ll certainly get a little taste of that with our first full faveMEN’s issue of New Year. What I do want to talk about it is the shift in men’s fashion and concerning male models. We all know the fashion industry is constantly changing, recycling and reinventing eras and trends. The same goes for the beautiful people that wear these fashions and bring these trends to fruition. We can certainly see these model cycles in terms of decades – especially with female models. If you think of the 90s (the era of the Supermodel), names like Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, to name a few, were the “It girls”. A new group of “It girls” are now at the forefront, and have become the faces of a new era. This wasn’t necessarily the case with male models. Sure, there were a few that were more prominent in the fashion world than others, but they never got the same attention or salary of their female counterparts. For me, things began to change with models like Marcus Schenkenberg, who in his time really turned the spotlight toward male models. Today, models like Sean O’Pry - one of our all-time favorite models - has played an important role in changing the male model industry and became the world’s highest paid model of 2013. Nowadays, one can easily name several male models that are at the top of their game. Simon Nessman, Garret Neff, Edward Wilding and Marlon Teixeira are a few of the current contenders. And although new faces are making waves in the industry, let’s not forget the men that came before them. David Gandy, Jon Kortajarena, Noah Mills, Tyson Ballou and Andres Velencoso - just like the female supermodels of their time - continue to be as strong as ever. In this issue of faveMEN we want to celebrate male models from all different genres around the world. We hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you! FM: Let’s talk Stroked Ego. How did Stroked Ego come about?

I have a lot of experience in marketing and branding so when a marketing sub-committee was established to rebrand the street and provide some direction, I jumped at the opportunity. FM: What is the most popular brand/item in your store? Why do you think that is? KM: That’s a great question. I can answer that in a number of ways! From a sales dollar standpoint, our Underwear/Swimwear department brings in the most. We are also known for our great collection of novelty accessories such as cuff links, bow ties and especially colourful, fun socks. Our skincare and shaving lines are also doing quite well, which I’m personally very proud of since it’s something I pushed for from the beginning.

FM: What is the biggest misconception you feel men have about fashion? KM: Men can have as much fun and personality with their fashion as women can. Even in situations where a more “conservative” wardrobe is required, small touches of personality can be included. I always use the example of a job interview. You are trying to sell yourself and make the interview memorable. If the interviewers can remember you as “the candidate with the colourful socks” or “the Lego cufflinks” then your wardrobe can help sell you and make you more memorable than another candidate. FM: Stroked Ego carries a great variety of accessories. When it comes to men’s fashion, what do you think is the ultimate accessory? KM: It all starts from the foundation. You need to wear comfortable underwear that fits well, provides support and allows you to not have to even think about it. Why men sacrifice comfort for the ability to save a few dollars still confuses me. From an accessory standpoint, I always recommend our power stays. These are flat, stainless steel pieces that are inserted into your dress shirt collar. They really finish the dress shirt off with a crisp look. It’s all about the details. FM: Our readers love everything we’ve featured from Stroked Ego. What exciting new things are you planning to bring?

FM: If you could recommend two products from you skincare lines, which ones would they be and why? KM: That’s a hard one! We were very selective and did a lot of research and testing before we chose our lines. We do our best to avoid alcohol, parabens and even phthalates in them. Many of them are certified Organic. If I had to choose from the ones I use, I would recommend EShave’s White Tea Shaving Cream and Jack Black’s Ultra Calming Face Cream. The shaving cream has a great, subtle scent and is good for my sensitive skin. The face cream contains moisturizing and sensitive skin calming ingredients. It also helps with anti-aging which I seem to need a little more of.

FM: I know everyone asks this question, but what’s next for Stroked Ego? We really want to know. What are your plans? What can we expect to see from Stroked Ego over the next few years? KM: We do get that one quite a bit. We’re currently exploring franchising. We have been contacted by a couple of different parties in two other Canadian cities who are interested in discussing potential. Mike and I have been discussing potential additional locations that we own in Ottawa and in other cities as well. Of course, we want to be very certain that whatever we decide is the best possible decision for the brand. Until then, we will definitely be investigating other product lines, community partnerships and will continue to get to know our clients as best as we can!

KM: I’m very excited about our spring lines. Stroked Ego has been gradually expanding its clothing range, and there are a couple of fantastic ones that will be appearing shortly. David Bowie is made its Canadian debut this fall at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto. The first international exhibition devoted to the British-born artist invites museumgoers to become intimate with a life and career spanning over five decades. A spectacular journey through the depths of Bowie’s mind, is explores the catalysts behind some of his most famous performances, art, stagewear and songs. Experimenter with creative boundaries, he dazzled and entranced audiences with his take on Surrealism, German Expressionism, Music Hall, mime and Japanese Kabuki. As a right-brain dominant, I’ve always had an appreciation for (and am consistently in awe of) artistic dynamism and prowess. Walking through the AGO exhibition myself, my imagination was asked to join the movement of dancing around life’s perceived limitations. While mouthing parts of 1969’s Space Oddity, “And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear…”, I felt strongly compelled to take a closer look at some of the fashionably iconic shells David Bowie left behind, and in turn, left earth awhile. Taking in the genius found in the most-notable seams, I became aware that we’re all capable of remarkable reinvention while on a mission to create our own beautiful, complex and bizarre realities. I returned with a full understanding that what is at his core is ever-transcendent and truly fascinating. David Bowie certainly is, was, and will be. The multimedia show continues its world tour with scheduled stops in Sao Paulo, Chicago, Paris and Groningen.

Ziggy Stardust Ziggy may have played guitar, but his style was louder than any note emitted from his acoustic. Taking the stage with his Spiders from Mars, the singer’s short, red hair and eclectic, patterned bodysuits – most designed by Kansai Yamamoto - ignited a cult following. His character was heavily influenced by mime and dance, with a frequent indulgence in active sexual expression and had a major penchant for glam-rock style. Androgynous and avant-garde, the world had never seen anything or anyone like him before.


Aladdin Sane A continuation of the star’s ambiguity and a pun on ‘A lad insane’, this character was the epitome of his bona fide rock star status. The lightning bolt down the middle of his face hinted at the mental conflict implied by the character’s name. It also reflects the internal struggle Bowie often had while trying to separate from his onstage personas. He experienced a dangerously intense commitment to his art, and felt a deep merging with all of his composites.

The Thin White Duke Exuding an elegant elitist quality, Bowie entered a black and white phase in his reinvention that added a little mystery and glamour - albeit reflective of the dark shadows he lived with during turbulent years of drug use. His slicked-back hair, crisp shirts and tailored trousers by costume designer Ola Hudson, gave him a flawless look - only enhanced by his cutting cheekbones.


McQueen: Fit for a King In the late 90s, with the help of Alexander McQueen, Bowie dove into a punk renaissance that catered to opulence with an edge. Some of the most striking pieces from this period included a revolutionary war-style Union Jack coat that graced the Earthling album cover. A knee-length gold brocade jacket designed for the accompanying tour was worn over ruffled shirts with delicate, lace cuffs. A series of distressed frock coats with the same aesthetic were also created for the Outside tour.
