from the editor Over the course of the initial planning stages for fave Magazine, I’ve been frequently asked where I found the energy to embark on such a venture. The answer to that is simple. Firstly, my energy comes from all the contributors and their passion for their craft. This group of caring individuals are genuine and truly inspiring. Secondly, I had tremendous support that let me find the confidence to move forward. Not just with this magazine, but as a person. That being said, I’d like to take a moment to thank one individual in particular; my father. Like any teenage boy, I struggled to form a good relationship with my parents. They say that sons are usually closer to their mothers and daughters, closer to their fathers. That wasn’t necessarily the case for me personally. Going through adolescence is tough enough, but for a teenage boy dealing with homosexuality, the initial concept of being closer to one’s father seems out of reach. As a young person, I was adamant about standing up for who I was when my stance was questioned or challenged. I realize that not every adolescent is as confident or strong-willed. Even with that confidence, I remember the many difficult, awkward and uncomfortable conversations upon coming out; but I also recall the pivotal “horse blinder removal” moment that created a shift in my relationship with my father. This was the moment he looked past engrained views on gender and sexual orientation and saw me through an all-understanding, accepting lens. What mattered at the heart of any issue was the human being. A human being brought into this world by two parents who made an oath to love him unconditionally.

Alcides Senior always supported and encouraged me in my academic efforts, but what really brought his support to a new level was his interest and encouragement behind the artistic ventures I decided to explore. There were many lessons learned during this period. Specifically, if one embraces and adapts to whatever life presents, one is sure to make some amazing discoveries along the way that will fill our life with love. In light of the ongoing issues with bullying and gay related suicides, I want to take this moment to encourage all fathers, step-fathers and father figures to eliminate their disapproval and fear of the unknown. I urge them to finally remove the horse blinders. This will allow clarity and understanding to truly accept the sons they already love. I encourage them to share the values of this message with male colleagues, friends and siblings so that we can help terminate the consequences of judgement and prejudice. This issue of fave Magazine is dedicated to my father, a special man in my life. His open-minded views, understanding and teachings have made me a better person. It is with his support that this publication exists. To celebrate, I couldn’t think of a more appropriate time to introduce a sneak peek at the faveMEN section of fave Magazine. MY FIRST EXPERIENCE It Doesn’t Get Better THANN This
Daylight poured into the room from the open curtain. In my morning haze, I wondered if I had dreamt it all. A quick glance at the empty bottle on the nightstand brought the memories to the forefront of my mind. It was all very real. I sat upright in the king size bed; its tremendous headboard practically reaching the ceiling. The faint lingering aroma of coconut and citrus oils reminded my senses of the bliss I had experienced the night before. I’m normally not one to throw caution to the wind, but somehow it felt right to do so. I lowered my guard and was immersed into something new, surprising, passionate and exciting. I was hooked and ready for more. It was my first time with THANN, but most certainly not the last. My THANN experience started like a modern-day fairy tale. The moment I stepped into my room at the ARC Hotel, my life was forever changed. The spectacular décor and roman-style bath set the scene for ultimate luxury. That’s when I noticed the complimentary samples of THANN products. It was love at first sight. My eyes were immediately drawn to the simple, yet modern design of the packaging. The clean logo said Zen to me. You see, I have travelled a fair amount and have stayed in some of the most amazing hotels across North America and Europe. I also have an obsession with skin care and beauty products. So as you can imagine, I travel with my own special toiletry bag full of them. New products tested for this magazine, and of course, my all-time faves and must-haves. Because I bring my own products, I very rarely use the complimentary samples found in hotel rooms. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that these products are provided for convenience; ideal for those who may have forgotten a few items while packing in a rush, but in my experience, what is offered tends to be over-scented and not of the highest quality.
I was pleasantly surprised during my stay at the ARC Hotel. I was immediately drawn to the products on display. Before I knew it, I had put on my product testing hat. I began to take a closer look at every detail and hoped that product itself matched the sophistication in which it was enveloped. As per my usual testing process, I opened the shampoo, conditioner and body lotion and used my hand to waft the scent toward my face. I discovered a very subtle and smooth scent. I was impressed. In fact, I had to bring my nose in a little closer to experience it again. For viscosity and texture, I proceeded to lift my sleeve up to my bicep and dabbed the product on my forearm, just below the inside of my elbow. Applying products on this area gives me a better reading. The lotion left my skin feeling soft and conditioned, but not oily. The verdict was in. I was in love! So much so, that I did the unthinkable. Wanting to continue the fairy tale, I used some of the shampoo for my bath! Bath salts were also available; and I did use them, but I wanted a THANN bubble bath. The scent was exhilarating. Hints of lemongrass and other aromatic scents filled the room transforming my hotel room into a spa getaway. Like the tale of Cinderella, (with the exception of the magic ending at checkout time and not midnight) I took the empty 20ml bottle of shampoo with me in hopes that, just like the prince, I could find a duplicate. Weeks passed. As fate would have it, I met a young lady blogger by the name of Marilou Moles at a fashion event. Following her on Twitter, I noticed her regular posts about THANN products. While clicking on a link to expand one of her tweets, there it was. I immediately grabbed the empty 20ml bottle that I had stored away and held it up to my laptop screen. With an enormous smile, I shouted: “It’s a match!” Continued on pg 15

FEATURE I contacted her immediately, firing off what seemed to be hundreds of questions: What is your involvement with THANN? Is it available only online? Where can I get my hands on some more? She kindly replied and informed me that not only was the range available through the website, but the flagship store was in my city. As a bonus, she invited me to the store to meet with her and experience THANN to the fullest. I made sure that I arrived at the store about ten minutes early. I wanted to do my own testing and talk to the staff and customers beforehand; for I had no doubt I would share THANN with fave readers. Not only did I get the chance to sample every sku in the product range, I was treated to a mini facial and left the store with a bag full of products for my team to test and review! Happily ever after, indeed. However, the fairy tale is not quite over yet. I can’t claim to be the prince who finally found his Cinderella. THANN had a gentleman who had made the discovery before I did. In fact, he was responsible for bringing THANN to North America and into the ARC Hotel. Where, as you now know, was the setting for my first THANN experience. Fadi Ghaby, entrepreneur and owner of THANN , has an amazing story to tell. Like every journey, there are ups and downs; obstacles and accomplishments. Fadi’s story is one of perseverance, determination and passion for life. An engineer for over 10 years, he suddenly changed careers and became an entrepreneur after receiving a THANN gift basket from his brother, who was travelling through Thailand. After trying THANN for the first time, Fadi found himself on a plane headed to Thailand within 24hrs. This trip was about to change his life. We recently sat down with Fadi to ask him a few questions about his journey and of course, his THANN faves. fave: What made you want to join the world of beauty/ skin care as opposed to any other industry? Fadi (THANN): The beauty industry was never my main goal. But I always wanted to be an entrepreneur and owning a very unique concept that I can grow and expand. Build my company with my team in a different and innovative way. fave: Why did you decide on THANN, what makes is this line so special to take on a venture like this? Fadi (THANN):I was in my executive management role in high-tech and got introduced to THANN with a small gift from my brother. I found the packaging and product so unique that I decided to fly to Bangkok to meet with the owners of THANN. Once I walked in the THANN concept shops, I was blown away. It only took a moment…

Fadi (THANN): I don’t think it’s a particular product, but it’s the complete concept and that unique experience when I walked in THANN in Thailand. But aromatic wood collection is my favourite. fave: How has THANN changed your life? Fadi (THANN): The experience that I had in my journey with THANN would have never happened in high tech. I was protected by big budget and invincible mentality, just excelling all the way. THANN is real. I never thought my weaknesses can become my strength. I became resilient to challenges, because I will break through one-way or another. NO choice. But the biggest change is in my personal life, where I work all the time. fave: What have been your biggest challenge and the best accomplishment so far? Fadi (THANN): Coming with the decision to close a store was the hardest and the proudest moment for m e because it made me let go of my Ego. It’s realizing that there is no success without failure. There is a price to pay aiming for success and it is very high, the challenge is to try and balance it, which perhaps I haven’t done a great job with. You can’t blame anyone, you have to live with every decision and risk you take. Biggest accomplishment: It might be that after everything that I went through, THANN is still here. I’m still here. fave: What’s next for you and THANN? Fadi (THANN): Continue our vision of growing the company through strategic and mutually beneficial partnerships with hotels and other high-end companies. With all the action happening in the stores this season: bold prints, cool tones, wild patterns, pops of colours; it’s hard to decipher what’s worth picking up and what’s worth leaving behind. So I went ahead and sifted through all of the trends-to-forget, and chose the top 3 worth investing in! Spotted: Yes, we’re talking dot prints – but not the polka dots your mother used to dress you in; we’re dealing with new-age, musthave dots to really kick your look for fall into high gear. The Fall/ Winter 2011 runways were covered in this fun print from Marc Jacobs to Diane vonFurstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana and even Stella McCartney. And the best part

about this trend? After attending NYFW in September, it looks like it will continue to be a big trend (think 60s) in the spring as well! Lace: Lace isn’t only for the bedroom anymore (guys- you’ll thank me for this one). This hot (pun intended!) trend is now being worn for day, evening and yes, even to the office! Lace chiffon tops, embellished necklines and pencil skirts have covered the pages of magazines for months now and are finally being displayed for our viewing pleasure in the shops. Valentino, Jason Wu, Lanvin and Bottega Veneta were among the few who took this look and made it approachable for the everyday woman.

Bottom Colour: We’re used to adding pops of colour to our wardrobe so that’s nothing new... but what IS new and definitely worth looking into, is the coloured pants (and I don’t mean the neutrals). Whether they were cropped, flared, tapered, or high-waisted; the hottest shapes of the season are coming in bold colours. I highly recommend looking into a pair of hot pink, canary yellow, royal blue or bright red. The best part about all three of these hot trends is that they can be mixed and matched simultaneously! Try a beautiful lace top with a hot pink pant, or maybe a royal blue flared denim with a dot crop top. No matter what your style is, these three are certainly worth the wait!

The answer is yes, it’s all about finding the right style for your lifestyle. While a staple for Fall may be a cozy wool coat, investing in a statement skirt is also a good choice. Regardless whether the skirt drapes down to the floor or is three quarters long, it is a good basic to have in the closet and can easily be used to dress up or down. The best part is: you can wear leggings under the skirt to keep yourself warm and no one has to know!
Katarina Kuruc leaned toward a printed skirt with a classic white blouse. The outfit focuses on a softer palette with some sultry arm candy. To finish, Katarina chose a pair of chic flats and a pair of bulky sunglasses. While her look has subtle hints of glam, every piece she has on is under $80, proving that one can own a classic fall wardrobe without breaking the bank.
Angie Fisher’s relaxed take on her white skirt make this outfit a date night staple. It’s an effortless mix of comfort and fun; layering the laid back vest over a bright turquoise top. Though the outfit may seem relaxed, Angie added a hint of glamour with some bold accessories, including the bulky starfish bracelet and the impeccably cool Demu Label leather pouch.
Justyna Baraniecki styled up her long black skirt for an easy look that works with the changing fall weather. Since black can be overwhelming, Justyna paired her skirt with a simple white top while showing some color with a pair of peep toe beige and turquoise sandals. Model Hi, my name is Michelle Treacy and I am a shoe addict. Yes it’s true - I just can’t get enough of shoes. I am crazy about every type of shoe, whether its heels, flats, sandals, boots etc. I can’t go a month without shoe shopping - or as I call it, satisfying my “shoe craving”. I recently surveyed my high school peers to find of what their FAVE type of shoes is. It was surprising to discover most surveyed favoured sandals, though the most comfortable shoes to wear to school were undoubtedly sneakers or running shoes and most students have at least one one pair with the biggest brands being Coach, Nikes, Converse and Pumas. UGGS were a close second. Most teens shopped for their shoes at West49, Journeys, and Aldo. Personally, the comfiest shoes in the world for me are Steve Madden or Jeffery Campbell’s 6-inch stilettos. Not because they feel amazing for an 8 hour day but because they make me feel unique and different and like I don’t have to fit in with everyone else. The real comfort comes from within the mind; if my mind is comfortable and I feel good about myself, a few blisters and a sore ankle is nothing because I know they’ll soon heal.

Citizen Everyone has a different reason to love shoes. I love my shoes because I can always count on them to fit, unlike my clothes. I don’t need to change sizes depending on what kind of day my body is having, the shoe will always fit and I will have them well into my old age. Every shoe tells a different story. Every shoe says a million words without saying one word at all. It’s likely that the perfect shoe doesn’t exist and may never, but perfect harmony does and designers are constantly creating new styles and incorporating new technologies. No one knows where the thirst of shoes comes and no words can explain how amazing a pair of shoes can make you feel. Shoes are the one element that goes on your feet and changes your entire look and behaviour from head to toe! Now that’s what I call power!

THE FASHION WORLD OF Jean Paul Gaultier From June 17th to October 2nd, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts presented the international exhibit The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first exhibition dedicated to the French couturier to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of designer’s own label. It drew in crowds from across the nation, all wanting to capture a glimpse into the mind of the master of fashion. This fashion retrospective featured approximately 140 ensembles from his couture collections and his prêt-à-porter line. Documents, sketches, multimedia installations (including mannequins with video-projected faces) and garments from the 1970s to 2010, flooded the exhibition floor; truly showcasing the creativity, imagination and craftsmanship necessary to bring an elaborate vision to life.
Once visitors completed their tour, it was evident that Jean Paul Gaultier continues to explore every facet of fashion design. Even his earliest designs occupied evidence of current fashion trends. Always on the cutting edge, his pieces tell a story and are infused with themes of multiculturalism, humanity, sensuality, sexuality an androgyny. His progressive, daring nature tests the boundaries of traditional gender roles; not only with the garments themselves, but with the models like Adrej Pejic, who walks in shows for both men’s and women’s fashions. He generates a great deal of attention with the use of unconventional models – full-figured men and women, and many who have piercings and tattoos. Worth noting is the celebrity factor. His creations have inspired collaborations with photographers,

THRIFT SHOPPING LE$$ON #1 - TIPS * Call ahead when the wallet is getting slim. Sometimes thrift stores have 50% off sales on certain days or at certain hours and can make a $15 outfit (which is a steal anyway) half the cost! * Don’t be shy. If a shirt is missing a button, or has a stain, they will give you a discount. * Give yourself some time to browse, don’t rush. If one store doesn’t have what you need, you’ll have enough leeway to hit up another store close-by. I usually give myself the better part of the afternoon. After an early lunch you can beat the crowds and get out of there before most people get out of work. * Inquire about auctions. Thrift stores get pretty amazing things donated to them, some too good to pass up. These are usually a bit pricier, but are niche items. If you see something that screams your name and the bids are few and far between, chances are you could hit the jackpot. * Try before you buy - unless it’s an oversized sweater we love those. This one is a no-brainer. Sometimes clothes look great on the rack but when you get try them at home, they don’t look so great anymore. * Did you find something you can’t in good conscience leave behind?
