One of my favourite current hairstyles is the ‘New Wet Look’. This look combines sleek appearance and texture. It perfectly complements any fashion look.

ight before students head back to class, there are a couple of weeks where the weather in Ottawa, Canada, is simply perfect.

For me, it’s the ideal temperature. It actually reminds me of San Diego; a city known for its perfect weather year-round. The days begin on the cooler side, which means folks in this city start going through their fall wardrobe to find their lightest sweaters. But they’re not digging too deep. Thoroughly sorting through one’s fall wardrobe would signify that fall has arrived, and the weather is not quite fall-like yet.

I recently had the opportunity to work with Emily Anne Mise, an incredible upcoming stylist, whose work is featured in ‘3 Hairstyles to Help You Transition from Summer to Fall’. While working on this shoot, I noticed that the model sporting the ‘New Wet Look’ looked great with a variety of styles. It looked laidback with jean shorts and a tank top, and played up the edge of a mini skirt paired with a black bustier underneath a white blazer. I couldn’t decide which outfit suited the hairstyle best. They both looked incredible! Makeup is also really great during this time of year. Sun-kissed skin serves as the perfect canvas for both simple, effortless looks as well as those that feature bright colours.

It really is all about the skin. My esthetician always says that beautiful skin is really all that one needs. A healthy skincare regime is essential to achieving just that. During the summer months, most of us solely When noon rolls around, the temperature has almost focus on sun protection, but it’s still important to reached its peak, and the downtown area is buzzing upkeep proper cleansing and hydration. with people on their lunch break; hoping to squeeze in a quick run to capitalize on the end of ‘shorts As the evening arrives and we reach for our handy season’. light sweaters, we should keep the above in mind. C

outure has an interesting ripple effect in the fashion world. Starting with the fashion elite, it influences anticipatory collections, colour trends, mixed textures, accessories and leather products, and then trickles down to various retailers. It’s exciting to witness the story being told on the runway created by artistic vision and day-to-day inspiration. This year’s Fall 2015 Couture Week set the stage for mixed texture concepts and versatile pieces that can be worn in summer and fall. One notable designer drew inspiration from Soviet-era communal residences and became an official couture guest member. Others shared imaginative gowns covered in tiny stars that seemed to float through outer space. This being said, when executed correctly, the results can be bewitching. My review of couture fashion week includes three designers that are turning high-fashion on its head. Alexandre Vauthier: An inimitable and personal favourite, Alexandre Vauthier is gifted in creating and manipulating the ultimate in Parisian sexual refinement. In this collection, many of his looks incorporate fringe which add a provocative feel to the couture without detracting from taste, elegance or presence. It can be very much described as Parisian glam rock mingling with a confident Los Angeles style. It’s not easy to make grunge illicit intimate or invigorating emotion as Alexandre does. The cutout jumpsuit worn with red tassels at the waist and a tuxedo jacket off the shoulders did exactly that. The large, fairly simple velvet poncho provided drama. When more risqué looks collaborate with more classic pieces - like a flowing pink chiffon gown - it’s impressive to say the least.

Fall 2015 Couture By Revend Brifkani

Vauthier’s collections are the result countless hours of embroidery work from Maison Lesage in Paris. One look alone required 1,600 hours of embroidery to resemble crocodile skin. Alexandre is keeping Paris interested and on its toes. Bravo! Ulyana Sergeenko: May she forever be remembered as a fashion icon! Her admirable taste and elegance has garnered her much success. She remains loyal to inspirations from her Russian heritage with this couture collection. References were made to lavish Russian accommodations, classical architecture, contrasting fabrics and vintage opulence. Ulyana needs no lessons on craft. She has an established couture clientele, and it was only really a matter of if, not when, that she would be named an official guest member of The Chambre Sydicale. It’s difficult not to admire the incredible amount of artisanship and precise tailoring executed. A standout number was a powder pink dress with a black shawl perfectly draped at the waist. It could easily be described as a classic Russian painting on display in a modern world. Zuhair Murad: A designer with a fairytale vision that continues to impress us with each passing season. His collection was inspired by space and the universe, and was absolutely breathtaking. Featuring exclusive evening looks, he created a romantic, ethereal energy that completely took over the ambience. Zuhair has the heart of a poet - most apparent in his beautifully embroidered black and oxblood coloured silk chiffon, taffeta and organza gowns. Zuhair added more flair with strong, poppy reds, emerald greens and midnight blue hues. His bridal gown finale, weighing in at 44lbs, had more than 10,000 crystal stars and embellishments. Out of this world opulence!

Featuring Miss America 2015, Kira Kazantsev Photography: Alcides Munoz Jr. Hair: Bruno Racine Assistant: Benjamin Lee Makeup: Leslie-Ann Barrett Wardrobe provided by Joseph Ribkoff Speical Thanks to Shepherd’s (Train Yards)

Earlier this summer, I had the great opportunity to spend an eventful day with Kira Kazantsev, Miss America 2015, while she was visiting the National Capital.

Our first stop was CTV Morning Live. The Loft Urban Salon’s Master Hairstylist, Bruno Racine, joined me in the prep room alongside Makeup Artist Leslie-Anne Barrett and Osolee’s Lee-Ann Lacroix. The magnificent glam squad’s mission was to get Kira camera-ready for her first morning appearance. Needless to say, Kira’s natural beauty made their job very easy, and her down-to-earth personality made the whole day an absolute pleasure. From the TV station, we then headed to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation where Kira was given a tour of the facility and information about the support programs offered. In turn, this year’s Miss America presented a two-thousand dollar donation on behalf of Joseph Ribkoff, clothing sponsor for the Miss America Organization.

We then made a second appearance at CTV’s studios for their midday news segment where she was joined by two young girls for a special feature on the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and recorded a public service announcement. To conclude my day with Kira, we found ourselves at the Train Yards and spent time meeting eager fans during an impromptu photoshoot at Shepherd’s. The setting was perfect! Shepherd’s is a beautiful fashion boutique full of incredible garments for women. They focus on the costumer experience by assisting their patrons in discovering their best body qualities. With only a few weeks left in completing her year wearing the crown, Kira is excited to start a new chapter in her life. We look forward to seeing where she takes her next steps. THE

SKY’S THE LIMIT For Sienna Vittoria

Photography: Tina Picard - Stylist: Cleo Morden - Hair: Daniel Fortunato - Makeup: Melanie Viger Text and Interview by Jennifer Lecompte

We first met Sienna Vittoria Lee-Coughlin, a bright, ambitious student at Canterbury High School with big fashion aspirations, in 2011. She has been steadily involved in projects that have displayed her contributions and passion for the arts. In just 4 years, she has blossomed into an independent young woman and a skilled writer with a keen eye for the latest styles. Taking Toronto by storm, she continues her studies in Journalism at Ryerson University, and has been a feature writer for various publications.

FASHION

fM: What do you enjoy most about writing for fashion? SVLC: I enjoy writing for women’s magazines because they combine so many of my varied interests. A photoshoot of the latest fashions will sit next to an article on new health research, a roundup of intriguing new books or a profile of an inspiring, powerful woman discussing her particular line of work. I especially find it fascinating to see how all of these industries overlap and inspire one another—for example, this past fall/winter season we saw folklore-inspired clothing on the runways (Dolce & Gabanna, Valentino) while fairytale films such as Maleficent (Angelina Jolie), Into the Woods (Meryl Streep) and Cinderella (Cate Blanchett) were premiering in theatres—I definitely don’t think this was a coincidence. Art, fashion, literature and social thought movements all feed into one another, and it is cultural trends like these that I enjoy writing about most.

FASHION

fM: Who are your top influences in creative fields? SVLC: I hate to seem cliché, but Audrey Hepburn has really been a role model since I was a young girl because of her talent, sense of style and poise, and her persona as a nurturing mother and generous philanthropist (she spent her last days working for UNICEF). Of course, I never knew her myself, but to me, she embodies the kind of spirited, warm-hearted and successful woman I wish to be. Lately, I’ve found the writing of Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir extremely inspiring. Gregory’s historical novels and Weir’s historical biographies both bring women from the past back to life, and I think, have greatly aided in the addition of women into a history mostly written by and about men. In terms of fashion editorials, every time I open a copy of Vogue I can’t help flipping to the section where Grace Coddington’s latest spread will be. Her romantic, daring and whimsical imagery always transports me to another world.

FASHION

fM: What elements do you incorporate in your personal style? SVLC: I tend to gravitate towards full skirts cinched at the waist and wide-brimmed hats for the warmer weather, and cozy knit turtlenecks when the temperature drops. I’m always inspired by the feminine silhouettes that Dolce & Gabbana sends down its runways, as well as the delicate laces and florals produced by Valentino. fM: What is the ultimate achievement for you right now? SVLC: Right now, I’m thrilled to be living in the big city, studying at one of Canada’s top journalism schools and writing for an amazing magazine. I feel truly blessed to be doing what I love at 20 yearsold. fM: Where do you want to take your career? SVLC: I wish to continue writing about talented, inspiring people, whether it be in magazines, or even some day, in books.

his is a very exciting moment for me. I’m a big fan of yours, so thank you for this opportunity. First off, after growing up in Canada, you moved to the United States. Tell us how your Canadian heritage influences your work. MR: I’m not sure if it was growing up Canadian or just being creatively isolated my entire childhood, but the second I found an outlet to express myself, the flood gates exploded open. I think being Canadian gave me a softer approach to things. FM: You were a successful model for many years before transitioning into acting. Tell us what that move was like. Do you think it is easier to transition from modeling to acting, or is it easier the other way around?

MR: It was very difficult for me to move into acting. At the time, my confidence was in the toilet and I really struggled with putting myself out there in such an overt way. That is one of the reasons I embraced photography so wholeheartedly. I could remain behind the scenes. I’ve since conquered my fear of public speaking, so I should probably give acting another go! FM: Clearly your background in film/acting was beneficial to working as a music video director. You’ve done a fair amount of work with some amazing artists. What was it about directing music videos that appealed to you? MR: What appealed to me about music videos was the ability to bring movement to still images. I tend to prefer doing videos that are a variety of visually creative tableaux as opposed to making narrative videos. There isn’t much rhyme or reason to my videos, but they are pretty to watch. FM: Before we move on to photography, I need to ask you about your television work. I follow and love many of the shows you’ve been involved in like America and Canada’s Next Top Model, RuPaul’s Drag Race and Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-list, just to name a few. What brought you back to being in front of the lens? MR: I started doing TV at a time where people were using it as a tool to move their careers forward. Since so many opportunities kept falling on my lap, I figured I throw myself into it. I’ve since stopped doing any on-air stuff in order to really focus on photography which is my first love. FM: Let’s talk about your work behind the camera. When I think of Mike Ruiz, I think of iconic images. The first ones that come to mind are, of course, those of Iman, Vanessa Williams, and Sir Ian McKellen. What is it about your style of shooting/photography that draws these celebrities in? MR: I like elevating people to a version of themselves that they seem to respond to very positively. My goal is to always have people feel good about the work we do together.

peaking of celebrities, I have to ask you about Kim Kardashian. She’s influenced social media in regards to the level of impact a photo can have. The image you captured of her sporting a short, smooth hairdo on the YRB cover is one of my favourites. What was is like to work with Kim and other celebrities? MR: It’s always a dance of sorts when working with celebs. I always get crazy ideas of how to approach a shoot, and often I have to alter things so that everyone is comfortable with the outcome. In the case of the Kim K shoot, she was very amenable to pushing the boundaries of how she is usually portrayed. I think Kim is a marketing genius and has redefined the way in which we all promote ourselves as creatives.

FM: Your beauty photography is flawless! We’re thrilled to feature some of your work in this issue. What is your favourite part of working on beauty shoots? MR: I love shooting beauty because I enjoy studying people’s faces. It’s often a micro expression or subtle shift that makes one image a 1000 times more appealing to me over another. FM: For our readers who are also aspiring models, if you can choose one quality that you look for in a model, what would that be? MR: It’s hard to say. First and foremost, I respond to models whose personality is warm and positive. A physical attribute that I really like in a model’s face are big, wide set eyes. FM: Your camera has captured so much beauty, the list is too long to include in this interview. That being said, whose beauty would you love to capture next – celebrity or not? MR: I wish I could have one more day with my mom. She passed in 1998 and I’ve learned SO much since then. I would love to photograph her and make her feel like a queen. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. FM: You are very much involved in giving back to the community; especially for LGBTQIA youth. Why is this so important to you? MR: It’s so important because I struggled with so many issues, mostly related to feeling unworthy as a young gay man. I’ve always felt that if I can help change one person’s negative perception of themselves, I would be so gratified. Of late, I’ve been advocating on behalf of animals since I’ve been witness to so many horrors of neglect and abuse. I am overcome with feelings of responsibility when it comes to giving a voice to the voiceless. FM: Last but not least, tell us about your experience hearing the announcement of samesex marriage rights while living in New York City. MR: It was so exciting to be handed the rights that so many take for granted. I think that moment was so affirming for a community that had been marginalized for so long.
