However, tuning out the world on a daily basis has really affected how we interact with each other. Take traffic, for example. Reducing one’s hearing abilities, especially in large cities, increases the chances of getting hit by a vehicle. Not only is traffic responsible for all the hit and runs, on many occasions I’ve been bumped into quite aggressively by pedestrians trying to make their way through. I’m sure most of you are thinking, “What do you expect?” Trust me, I get it. However, I feel that if we were more in tune with our surroundings than our playlists, we’d be more aware of the effect we have on others.
Is it ever too late to say sorry? I believe that people in general are afraid to say sorry, while others feel there’s an overuse of the word, which puts the value of its meaning in the balance. Canadians have been criticized for saying sorry too much. Even our very own Justin Bieber was teased in the media for being stereotypically Canadian with his song titled Sorry. I’ve heard this comment for years. Even though I was not born in Canada, I certainly feel just as much Canadian as I do Columbian. One of the things that I appreciate the most about growing up in Canada is that Canadians are known for being nice, kind, and not being afraid to apologize. Nothing made this clearer to me more than when travelling abroad. I like to travel a fair amount, and in most cases, visit large metropolitan cities. Because of the size of these cities and their dense population, there’s a busy rhythm to life. Understandably, people are very focused on their final destination, but I can’t help feel that they often put on blinders to the rest of world around them. The use of earphones is the first thing I noticed. More and more people are tuning out their surroundings while listening to their favourite tunes.
About seven years ago, while in Paris, I was trying to find my way through the city during rush hour when I accidently bumped into a gentleman while turning around to see a street sign. I immediately took a step back and said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hit you.” He stopped with an initial expression of mild annoyance, but soon noticed my Canadian flag lapel pin. He then asked, “Where in Canada are you from? I’ve visited Montreal and Toronto,” followed by, “Where are you trying to get to?” At first, I thought he was going to say, “Watch where you’re going!” or something of that nature. Instead, I realized that this little flag really means something. I’ve been advised before to wear it while I travel, and now understood that we have a reputation for being polite and kind. Just to be clear, wearing a Canadian flag lapel pin is not going to make any person kind and respectful. This pin has become a representation of the type of people we are and our culture. Canadian or not, a little politeness can go a long way. Being able to take a moment to apologize for bumping into someone; for saying something you didn’t mean; for the little things, is not reserved to Canadians only - everyone can do it. So, is it too late to say sorry? I say, sorry is golden. It’s never too late. #Sorry

ALEX DORANTES FM: Alex, let’s start by talking a little about your background. You’re Canadian with Mexican roots. Tell us a little more about those roots and how they play a part in your modeling? AD: I think my roots help me to differentiate myself in the fashion industry. I haven’t met someone with the same roots as me. Also, for some people, I could pass for Canadian, for others Spanish or Italian (which has been useful in Milan). I’ve even heard Turkish once! People rarely guess I’m part Mexican, though. Probably because of my height. My stature is kind of a mystery. My father stands at 5’10”, but I suspect GMO’s to be behind it! (laughs) My green eyes brought me very positive comments over the years. And since a lot passes through the eyes in photography, it definitely helped me in my career. I have mostly my mother’s side to thank for that. My great-grandfather on my father’s side did have blue irises, though. My hair, which sometimes has a personality of it’s own, made me hear it all from hairstylists. Some found the thickness of my Mexican hair fantastic to play with, some found that the straightness was challenging, some would let me adjust it myself, and others would envy the dark, almost black colour. To conclude with my roots, since a lot of the clothes are shot a few months in advance, my natural tanned skin is definitely a plus when it comes to summer looks. On the other hand, I have to be careful under the sun to avoid getting a burn or have a farmer’s tan. (laughs)

FM: We see you everywhere! Loads of magazine covers, editorial and commercial shoots. Do you feel it’s now the norm for models to be expected to have a social media presence? AD: Nowadays, we can’t ignore the fact that social media contributes massively to a brand’s marketing. We’re not at the point where it’s written in black and white in the contracts (at least my agencies never had to negotiate on such a thing), but it’s definitely something that makes a positive difference. When we think about it, it’s good for everybody. Around an event like a campaign photoshoot, all the people can share their experience with others their. The model will post a behind the scenes, the makeup artist will seize a funny moment, the photographer will take a group shot, and so on... As a public figure, I think it’s important to understand that the people who follow us have choosen to do so. And if they decide to make room in their busy life for us, it’s because they have an interest in seeing our work, our passion, our personality. Seeing a final product is good, but also having an inside look during the process is even better. It makes it more interesting and personal. So, to answer your question, yes. I feel the public and the people from the industry are expecting models to have a social media presence. I think the public enjoys to connect with the models they like, and let’s be honest here, the companies are happy because it adds to their visibility. On top of it personally, social media made me connect with very nice people and even helped me in my career by showing my work to some people from the fashion world. Next thing I know, they give a call to my agency. Isn’t it wonderful?

FM: You’ve expressed an interest in photography. How does it feel to be on the other side of the lens? Share with us how your interest in photography has assisted you with modeling? AD: Oh, it feels good! To me it’s like poetry. On the other side of the camera, I feel that I can concentrate on seizing the magic in a moment. But to get there, to turn the vision into a picture, a lot of technical knowledge is necessary. That’s the challenge! There is so much to know. I’m always learning! Even on set, I’m always there asking the photographer about his or her equipment to understand how to interact the type of lens, the depth of field, the lighting, the bouncers and filters... It really helps me to get a better idea about what the picture is going to look like at the end. I can move better according to the lighting and shadows desired. I remember at a casting once, there wasn’t a photographer in the building, so it was the marketing director who had the camera in hand, and she couldn’t find how to get a good picture with the proper lighting. So, I intervened and set the camera mode, aperture and iso to make sure that I had all the chances on my side at the end! Who said being a model was only about poses? (laughs)

FM: How do you balance school, work, social media (that’s a job on it’s own), not to mention staying fit? Any tips? AD: First of all, I think that to really enjoy what you’re doing for a living will make a big difference at the end of the day on your mental state. I love modeling, meeting people, making poses, and hitting the runaways. It brings me a very positive energy. After that, I still have the energy to put my nose in the books to study. I have to be realistic though, I only take a relatively low amount of courses by session so I can succeed. As for social media, you’re absolutely right; it’s a job on its own. The important point there is to find the right angle so it doesn’t become work and that it stays fun. Personally, I focus on inspiring people, and since that goal is very positive to me, it becomes manageable to keep doing it on the regular basis. Finally, staying fit comes with a healthy lifestyle in general. It’s a mix of nutrition and exercise. I workout about three times a week, one hour per session, plus I do a quick 20 minute workout every other day targeting specific movements that I want to master, or doing stretching exercises. It’s good to know that working out brings your energy level up in general. It’s a pretty good time investment to be more productive on other stuff!

FM: Tell us a little more about your TV and video work? Is this the direction you’re heading in? What can we expect to see next? AD: I remember one of my very first days of work as a model, I worked with a man who advised me to consider acting on the long-term. It makes total sense to me, even today. Take commercials, for example. What do you see more of when you turn on your TV? Do you see a young looking guy or a man in his 30s or 40s getting in a car, shaving himself, or on a yacht living a dream life just because he smells good? I truly enjoy acting because you need to deeply know yourself to make it real. You need to connect with your feelings to bring a character alive. As you can imagine, with my busy schedule, I don’t really plan to study acting full-time, but the door is always open to new projects. The good thing is, there is a lot of good classes out there that I’ll be able take when I’ll have the chance. For now, I’m focusing on my studies in business. Also, I’ll be a certified personal trainer in April, so I will keep doing everything that I’m doing as a model and actor, plus help people get in shape to, hopefully, have a better lifestyle. Can’t wait to share my passion for calisthenics and bodyweight training! I invite fave Magazine’s readers to connect with me on social media to stay tuned and say, “Hi!” Thank you very much for this interview. It’s been a pleasure, and I’m really glad to be a part of this issue. Take care, everyone. Cheers!
