The Fayette County Record

A group of young girls wrote an exciting new chapter in the tale of the most storied athletic program in Fayette County Saturday. The Round Top-Carmine Cubettes, (already winners of six state volleyball titles and 20 state tournament appearances) are headed to their 21st state tournament this week after winning the IV-1A regional tournament title Saturday in Brenham. “These girls are something special,” said first-year RTC

head coach Caitie Carney. But the way the Cubettes punched their ticket to state this time was truly unique, as RTC downed district rival and Fayette County neighbor, Fayetteville in three sets, 26-24, 25-14, 25-16. “It’s a small town rivalry, right down the road. They wanted to beat us just as bad as we wanted to beat them,” Carney said. “We just stayed composed and did the little things right.” RTC (21-11) now advances to play Water Valley at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the state semifinals in Garland’s Curtis Cul-

well Center. The winner of that match faces the Neches (39-5)/ Blum (30-14) winner at 3 p.m. Thursday in Garland for the 1A title. There was hardly a volleyball fan left in Northern Fayette County as these two neighbors squared off for the third time this season. RTC had beaten the Lady Lions twice in district play, but early on Saturday Fayetteville tried to show this time would be different. With Fayetteville freshman Brooklyn Jaeger dominating, the Lady Lions built a 22-18 in

that first set, only to see RTC rally for a comeback. “That seems to be a common theme with us, we run slow in the first set. Then they are much better at fighting back,” Carney said. “RTC is deep,” said Fayetteville head coach Clint Jaeger. “They rotate a lot of players in and out. They have a lot of hitters, a lot of height. It’s tough for us to cover all that. We did our best. The first set we almost had them. We lost the momentum in the second set and never could get it back.”

RTC was much more in control of the final two sets. Senior Bayley Ward served the match-winning point with junior Brooke Schobel spiking down the final shot, after which the Cubettes dog-piled on top of one another at mid-court in celebration. “I was ready for it. I was like ‘heck yeah,” Schobel said of that last point. “I’m excited for what the future holds (at state).” Megan Krause led RTC in kills Saturday with 13 and Schobel added 11 kills to go along with a team-high 13 digs. Short-Handed Leps Oust La Marque

By JEFF WICK

The Fayette County Record

Short on players but not on determination, the La Grange football team put years of postseason frustration behind them with a 12-7 victory over La Marque in a 4A playoff first round game at a chilly Rhodes Stadium in Katy Thursday. The Leps were 0-for-3 in playoff openers over the last four years, with each of those losses coming by a touchdown or less. “After three years of wanting it, and waiting, this feels so good,” said La Grange safety/receiver Brock Gardiner, who had a touchdown catch Thursday. On paper, it hardly seemed like this would be the Leps team to break that string – especially after a disastrous series of events over the past several days that left La Grange missing numerous key players out with everything from injury to ineligibility to a flu-bug that swept through the team. The Leps faced the fivetime state champion Cougars

by starting a third-string quarterback, third-string kicker, and without their leading rusher, and second-leading receiver. “We suited out only 28 kids from our initial roster (of 40 from opening day),” La Grange head coach Matt Kates said. “We had some JV kids step up, the freshmen stepped up.” How far down the depth chart did the Leps have to dip? Consider this: Freshman Jakobe Wilkerson, who may be a future star but one who had not played a varsity game this season, was running and catching the ball Thursday. Somehow, some way, these Leps overcame the adversity of missing so many. “Coach always says you gotta love adversity and overcome. That’s what we did tonight,” said La Grange’s D.J. Taylor, who scored the game-winning touchdown with 3:04 left in the game. “This was about the perseverance, belief and character of La Grange kids,” Kates said. The La Grange defense was

particularly inspired, allowing La Marque just 96 total yards (all on the ground) after allowing more than 50 points in backto-back weeks the final two weeks of the regular season. “That’s not how we play Leopard defense and we needed to step up,” Gardiner said. “It all started with the defense tonight,” Kates said. “You are how your defense plays most of the time and Coach Cauthern (defensive coordinator) had them ready to play tonight.” No defensive play was bigger than Jacob Brandt’s interception of a Cougar pass with 2:31 left in the game. La Grange had a distinct advantage in the passing game. The Leps managed just 56 yards in the ground, but Brandt threw for 144 yards, while La Marque completed just one pass for no gain on eight attempts. The scoring started in the wildest way imaginable for the Leps. With 4:42 left in the first quarter La Grange lined up to

try a 26 yard field goal, but the snap somehow bounced up and into the arms of back-up kicker Jackson Bundick. He had the presence of mind to lateral the ball to holder and quarterback Jacob Brandt who scrambled around for what felt like an eternity, until lofting up a prayer into the endzone, that Brock Gardiner snagged for a go-ahead touchdown. “I pretty much know that Jacob’s a much better playmaker than I am, I just thought I was doing what was best for the team,” Bundick said. “I don’t even know what I was doing, I was just running for my life,” Brandt said. The ensuing extra point was blocked, but La Grange held onto that 6-0 lead into the third quarter. The Leps missed a golden opportunity to go up by more right before halftime when La Grange’s Coltin Whitaker recovered a fumbled La Marque punt attempt at the Cougar three-yard line with 1:23 left in the half.

But four Brandt quarterback keepers right into the heart of the La Marque defensive front yielded no points. Then to begin the third quarter the Cougars marched 60 yards to take a 7-6, capped off by a DaMarcus Nelson one-yard touchdown run and a Jonathan Hipolito extra point kick. That would be the only lengthy drive La Marque had all night. The Cougars did have a punt return for a touchdown called back because of penalties. The Leps finally re-took the lead with 69-yard scoring drive late in the fourth quarter. Key plays in that march were passes by Brandt of 20 yards to Gardiner and of 30 yards to freshman Bravion Rogers – both on third down. That drive was punctuated by a 15 yard touchdown run by D.J. Taylor with 3:04 left in the game. “This game could have gone either way tonight,” Taylor said. “The O-line stepped up and I got See Leps, next page

led in assists with 27. For most of the Cubettes, this will be their first taste of the state tournament, but the team’s three seniors, Krause, Ward and Cassidy Tiemann were all freshmen on the team back in 2016 when the Cubettes advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Bronte. “Our seniors have preached from the get-go (about going to state),” said Carney, who had never been to state as a coach, but went to state as a basketball player at Giddings High School. Leps Now Face an Old Nemesis, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs Continued from Page B1 a touchdown for the team.” Taylor had a game-high 58 yards rushing on a night when yards were hard to come by on the ground for both teams. With La Grange up 12-7, the ensuing conversion try by the Leps was fumbled and returned 80 yards by La Marque’s Jacobe Wagner, but he was chased down from behind by Joseph Mueller and Taylor just shy of the goal line. La Marque got the ball back with three minutes left in the game but on the second play of their possession, Brandt put the game away with his interception. The Leps ran out the clock from there. The victory was especially meaningful for Kates, who had coached at La Marque early in his career including on the 2003 state title team. “It’s special to think about all those memories, I told Shone (Evans, La Marque head coach) that once than LM spirit gets in you, it doesn’t leave. I was only there from 2002-2003. It’s a special place, that will always

be special to me. I feel for those kids.” While La Marque’s season ends, La Grange plays on – which was especially meaningful for the players who missed because of the flu Thursday but should be back for next week’s game. “We did it for Dayton (Jarvis), we did it for Dalton (Caughman). We did it for everybody that was sick,” Brandt said. “The seniors that got sick, they can come back and have another game,” Taylor said. La Grange (8-3) now advances to play West OrangeStark (8-1) in the area round of the playoffs. That game will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Conroe’s Moorehead Stadium. These two teams are no strangers to each other. The Leps lost to West Orange in the fourth round of the playoffs 42-7 in 2014, and the Mustangs were state runner-ups that year. West Orange-Stark has won four state titles, including backto-back crowns in 2015 and 2016.

Flatonia Spanks Iola 48-0

The Flatonia Bulldogs looked as dominant in the first round of the playoffs as they did during the regular season. The Bulldogs bashed Iola 48-0 in a Class 2A first round playoff game Friday in Taylor as Flatonia improves to 10-1 overall this season. Flatonia now advances to the area round and will play La Pryor (7-4) Friday Nov, 22 at 7 p.m. at San Antonio Central Catholic High School. The winner advances to the regional round to play the Bremond/Agua Dulce winner. The Bulldogs lost to La Pryor in the second round of the playoffs in 2017 by a 46-20 score. Friday, Flatonia wasted no time putting this game away, jumping out to a 20-0 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Flatonia senior Dakory Willis ran for four touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass and ended up with 182 rushing yards. Teammate Chris Johnston ran for 133 yards and a touchdown and Devante Williams added a late score for the Bulldogs. Flatonia limited Iola to just 103 total yards and forced three turnovers. Friday’s victory means the Bulldogs have advanced to the second round of the playoffs (or beyond) each of the last five seasons.

Comfort Rallies Late to Eliminate Schulenburg

By ANDY BEHLEN

The Fayette County Record

Schulenburg suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Comfort Bobcats, 40-31, in the first round of the high school football playoffs last Friday, Nov. 15. The Shorthorns started off strong. Comfort attempted an onside kick on the opening kickoff but Schulenburg recovered. Comfort appeared to almost stop Horns on 4th down at the Bobcat 45, but Shorthorn receiver Bobby Smith pulled in 23-yard reception on a fake punt. Senior running back Brayden Duarte ran the ball into the end zone on the following play from the 22. The first sign that things might not go well came on the kickoff that followed. Schulenburg attempted to respond with an onside kick of their own, but a flubbed kicked sent the ball tumbling backwards. The Bobcats ended up with the ball on the Schulenburg 45. They scored a field goal on that possession, bringing the score to 3-7 late in the first quarter. Schulenburg scored a field goal on the next possession, making the score 3-10. The Horns then forced Comfort to punt after four downs and took the ball back on their own 32. Schulenburg fumbled the ball on the next play, which set up a six-play touchdown drive by the Bobcats, tying the game 10-10. On the drive that followed, Schulenburg marched from their own 20 to the Comfort 44 before fumbling the ball once more. Comfort was not able to capitalize on that error. They turned the ball over on downs at the Schulenburg 26. Schulenburg scored two plays later on a pass from junior quarterback Brett Janecek to Smith, bringing the score to 10-17 after the extra point. Comfort responded by scoring on the first play after the kickoff with a 75-yard touchdown reception by running back Zachary Vilo from Bobcat quarterback Oscar Falcon. The extra point was no good, which brought the score to 16-17 with 2:49 left in the half. Schulenburg suffered an officiating error on the next drive. On third down and six

from their own 26, Schulenburg Head Coach Brandon Brown attempted to call a timeout as the end of the half neared. The line judge started to step on the field and blow his whistle to signal the time out, but the whistle flew out of his mouth and onto the turf without making a sound. The play went on, and Janecek got sacked in the backfield. That set up a punt on fourth down just before halftime. After halftime, the Shorthorns attempted another onside kick. The ball managed to go in the right direction this time, but Comfort still recovered, although they turned it over three plays later on a fumble. The two teams traded possessions twice before Comfort got on the board again with a field goal late in the third, giving them the lead 19-17. Comfort attempted another onside kick and recovered. They converted that into a touchdown at the beginning of the fourth quarter, extending their lead 2617. Janecek gave up an interception on the next drive. He ended up tackling the ball runner on that play, preventing a defensive touchdown by the Bobcats. It was the only major blemish on an otherwise spectacular performance from the junior quarterback, who didn’t even throw an incomplete pass until halfway through the third quarter. Comfort got the ball back on the

Shorthorn 19 and quickly scored, bringing the score to 32-17. Schulenburg could not come back. On the following drive, the Horns managed to score a touchdown and convert for two points, but they ate four precious minutes off the clock doing so. With the score 33-25 and 4:42 left in the game, Comfort kept the ball on the ground winding the clock down to 1:51 before scoring again. Now trailing 40-25, the Horns put together a valiant drive and scored on a play that started with two seconds left,

narrowing the gap to 40-31. “I have no words,” said senior running back Temon Glover after the game, with tears running down his face. “I told them you have to win with class and sometimes you have to lose with class,” Brown said after the game. The Shorthorns ended their season with a 6-5 record. Comfort will go on to play Stockdale in the Area round next week. Schulenburg beat Stockdale 1413 in the first game of this season.

RTC Wins All-County Regional Final Continued from Page A1 “They’ve wanted it so bad. They want the other girls to experience what they did.” Of course, those seniors want a little different outcome at state this time. “It’s going to be tough,” Krause said. “It’s going to take each and every one of us to work as a team.” With 21 victories, the Cubettes have the fewest wins by far of any of the 24 teams (1A6A) at the state tournament. But the Cubettes feel like they are more battle-tested than most – and RTC hasn’t lost even a single set in the playoffs this season. “We’ve had some bumps and bruises along the way but we’ve finally figured out how to play good volleyball,” Carney said. The Cubettes lost eight of their first 13 matches, but have since gone 16-3. “At the beginning of the season everyone was doubting us. We had to fight to prove them wrong,” Ward said. Saturday’s loss ends another stellar year for the Fayetteville volleyball team which ends its season with a 26-16 record. This is the second consecutive season the Lady Lions saw their season end one win away from a state tournament berth. “We’re headed in the right direction, we just have to get over that hump though,” said Jaeger What’s remarkable was that

this year’s team was almost completely new. “We lost six girls off last year’s team, all six starters,” Jaeger said. “No one expected much of them and they came through all year long and give it everything they could. I can’t say enough about their dedication and work ethic.” Fayetteville will lose two seniors off this team, Colby Deatherage and Cloe Schulle Just to get to Saturday’s final, Fayetteville had to knock off Tilden McMullen County Friday in the regional semis losing the first set 26-28 before winning the next three 25-22, 25-18, 2516, led by 39 kills from Jaeger and 12 from Deatherage. Lan-

dry Wied had 48 assists in that match, Jaeger had 47 digs and Jackie Titus had 26 digs. RTC, meanwhile, got past defending state semifinalist D’Hanis a little easier in their semifinal Friday, sweeping the Cowgirls 25-21, 25-14, 25-13, avenging a loss to them in last year’s regional semis. Kelsey Lunbeck led RTC in kills Friday with 11, Krause had eight and Kate Eilers had 27 assists. Those wins set up Saturday’s in-county regional final. And if that match was any indication, there should be some great 1A battles between these Fayette County teams for years to come.
