Locals Organizing to Fight Sludge Dumping Plan By ANDY BEHLEN The Fayette County Record
An effort by Arkansas-based Denali Water Solutions LLC to dump sewage sludge from the City of Austin in Fayette County looks like it will face some pushback from local residents. The company filed an application with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for a “beneficial use permit” to spread sewage sludge as fertilizer onto about 1,660 acres of pasture land at the Banks Ranch near Ellinger, which borders the Colorado River. Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka said he wants the TCEQ to hold a public meeting on the application. A Facebook group named “Project: Save the Colorado River” established
last Wednesday, June 1, has already attracted 668 followers as of Sunday, June 5. Posts on the group page encourage followers to petition TCEQ for a hearing on the permit application. So far, the agency has received four formal hearing requests. The agen-
cy has not yet granted a public meeting for the application. Denali has not spoken publicly about the application. Last week the Record contacted The company’s Mike Cook, who is heading up the Denali’s project in Fayette County. He referred
media questions to company spokesperson Julie McNeill and provided her email address. Shortly after sending an email to McNeill on Friday morning, we received a phone call from a consultant who said See Sludge, back page

La Grange native Maurice “Butch” Granville turned 100 last fall on Oct. 26, 2015. According to Carol Blyberg, Granville’s daughter, her father was born in La Grange on that date in 1915. He was valedictorian at La Grange High School and attended the University of Texas in Austin. He then headed east to Cambridge, Mass., where he earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering. Granville is described by his family as a natural athlete and even at 100 still avidly follows college games. He married his wife of 69 years in January, 1945. They had two children and over the years moved from New York to Texas and then back to New York as Granville’s career with Texaco brought increasing responsibilities. He retired from Texaco as chairman of the board in 1984 and he and his wife, Janet, moved to Rockport, Maine. On Tuesday, May 23, 2016, dignitaries from the town of Rockport gathered at his home to present Granville with the Boston Post Cane, which is See Granville, back page

The Muldoon Methodist Church is planning a Bible Study for the Saturday night services on Revelations. It is a video study by Les Feldick and will be a scripture to scripture comparison and study of the last book of the Bible. This study will begin on June 18 at 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall. There will still be the glorious music by Sherri Ray. If you have not heard Sherri play then you have missed a real treat. Following the worship/Bible study part of the service there will be coffee and dessert to accompany the discussion of the materials covered and also to aid in the fellowship of all those in attendance. Everyone is welcome to come and join in this wonderful old fashion fellowship church. One note: the meetings will be taking place in the fellowship hall part of the building due to an air conditioning problem with the main sanctuary. This will aid in speeding up the coffee and dessert portion of the program and making everyone feel welcome and included. No need to bring anything other than yourself and your Bible to be a part of this fellowship. Weather Muldoon has seen rain almost every day. Anywhere from a few tenths and over and each with Texas-size shower. With all the rain the ground is highly saturated and most of the rain that falls runs off. This has made the creeks in the area rise very easily with any amount of moisture. Please take note and do not cross any water crossing the roadways. Turn around. Don’t drown. Nothing is worth crossing running water.
Out And About Pam and Quentin Sheffield decided to surprise their daughter, Sarah Holland, for her thirtieth birthday on May 20. Sarah had showed up on their doorstep to surprise Pam on Mother’s Day, so it was a chance to return the favor. Pam and Quentin picked up dinner along with a cake before they drove to Sarah’s house. They enjoyed surprising her with a text from Sarah’s driveway, telling her to open the garage door. She was totally surprised by her visitors. The rest of the evening together was enjoyed celebrating this momentous birthday. Pam and Ron Knotts on Sunday attended to attend the graduation of their granddaughter, Madeline Martinez from Bellaire High School at the NRG Stadium. She was the third generation Bellaire Cardinal. Fayette County’s Presence at the Battle of San Jacinto By ED JANECKA
Part I or II
Information for this article was taken from the “Early History of Fayette County” by Weyand and Wade. The list of men and their identifying information has been copied as written, except for some corrected errors that are included in parentheses. If it were not for the men of Fayette County who fought so gallantly at San Jacinto, the Texas Revolution may have failed. If Joel Robison had not been one Footprints of the captors of Santa Anna, the Mexican genindeed could have escaped to Mexico to Of Fayette eral organize a new and bigger invasion of Texas. Robison allowed Santa Anna to ride at local history. with him on his horse for several miles back to the Texian Army camp, not knowing at the time who he was actually escorting until Santa Anna was inadvertently identified by some of his own soldiers. Those were difficult times when men, women and children were in full flight before the horde of invading Mexicans; their homes were in flames - burned so that the invaders might not derive any benefit from them. Their abandoned farms held only a few straggling cattle. Those were definitely hard times for everyone. It was a band of trained and experienced fighters who overwhelmed that Mexican line. They rushed into the fight at San Jacinto firmly determined to save the day! Not only did Fayette County’s men save the day, but they also may have saved the Republic. These were the men who wrote their names on Fayette County’s immortal Muster of Fame: Abbotts, Lancelot - Resided in Cedar, Fayette County. Was once on the staff of the “Texas Monument.” (Left at Harrisburg with Camp Guard) Alexander, Jerome B. - Killed in the Dawson Massacre, September 18, 1842.

nutrition and indoor/outdoor activities, and parent involvement and education, are in a better position to contribute to the early development of children. As providers progress through the levels of TRS provider certification, they contribute progressively more to the development of the children they serve on a daily basis.” Scientific studies have proven that most brain development happens before the age of four. This is why quality child-care is so important, both for children and parents. The staff at the Remnant Academy strives to better themselves every day and do not plan to stop at this four star TRS rating. They will continue to seek ways to improve and have fun with the children. This summer they have already opened their splashpad for the children and the school age children have embarked on their first field trip.

Maly
The Reverend Milton Alvin Maly, the youngest and only son of six children of Czech parents Edwin and Albina (Simcik) Maly, was born on May 13, 1940 in Taylor. He graduated from Taylor High School in 1958. He served his country proudly for four years in the US Air Force and trained in the field of electronics. He later graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, followed by the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and completed his work for the Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained in the ministry of our Lord on June 5, 1969 in his home congregation, the Taylor Brethren Church, where he was baptized and where he made his profession of faith through confirmation. He, with his family, served the Miskito Indians through the Moravian Board of World Missions in Ahuas, Honduras for six years where he worked in the position of clinic administrator. During his 45 years of Christian ministry he pastored many Unity of The Brethren congregations in Texas including Rosenberg/Alief/Sealy (5 yrs), Seaton/ Buckholts (4 yrs), Wesley (12 yrs), Industry/Fayetteville (25 yrs) and Caldwell (supply) and a Hispanic Fellowship (Hermandad en Cristo) in Brenham as well as served as a hospice chaplain. He also served the denomination in several other positions: Synodical Committee First and Second Vice-President, Mission Board Member, Board of Christian Education Chair, Hus School Class Director and Hus School Staff member. He shared his passion for the Spanish language by teaching it for 12 years in several schools, colleges and universities. He will be remembered by his quiet patience and humility, moderately funny humor, love for all people no matter their age, race, or station in life, his ’79 Datsun and ‘02 red Tacoma nicknamed “Truckie”, hundreds of baby stools and other handcrafted furniture, his intense, unwavering affection for his “Lady” of 36 years, his sense of pride and fulfillment in his family, his mechanical and electrical skill, the dusty self-portrait of Rembrandt in his very messy shop, his command of many languages, his moral compass, his hankering for traveling and family vacations, the home he made in the woods, his pride at serving his country, a weakness for spiced
pumpkin pecan Blue Bell ice cream, his 40 year membership in Lion’s Club International, his two books “Rev’s Elations” and “Rev’s Elations 2” and dedication to Christian ministry. After a long battle with brain disease, he quietly and confidently left this life surrounded at home by his family on May 30, 2016 to be with his eternal Father in Heaven and to be reunited with his parents, sister Elsie Van Lehn, and son Darren. He leaves behind to mourn his passing his wife of 36 years Jean; children Michael, Ginger and Eddie, Brandon, Rachel and David, Gregory and Susan, Andrew and Mindi, and Benjamin; grandchildren Christopher, Alexander, Isabel, Savannah, David, Jake, Naomi, Taylor, and Cruz; sisters Annie & The Rev Albert Michalik of Georgetown, Georgia Anderson Tyroch and Elizabeth and Stanley Zetek of Temple, and Sylvia Sebesta of San Antonio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A private family interment of his cremated remains will follow on a later date at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Pickup Hydroplanes Off Hwy. 77 Thursday Morning By ANDY BEHLEN The Fayette County Record
A Weimar man required hospital treatment after rolling his pickup on its side on US 77 near the Lee County line Thursday morning. The accident happened around 8 a.m. Intermittent showers that morning left the roadway wet. According to a report from Trooper Robert Gulash of the Texas Department of Public Safety, James Bittner of Wei-
mar was driving north in a 2000 Chevy 2500 pickup when the vehicle began to hydroplane. Bittner’s pickup slid off the roadway to the right and rolled onto the driver’s side. The vehicle came to rest against a small cedar tree growing into a fence line. Fayette County EMS transported Bittner to St. Mark’s Hospital in La Grange. Gulash said Bittner’s injuries were not life threatening.

Subdivisions Getting a Closer Look by Commissioners By ANDY BEHLEN The Fayette County Record
Fayette County Commissioners Court is beginning to take a closer look at land subdivisions in the county. Previously, once a month at a commissioners court meeting, each commissioner received a list of properties being subdivided in their precinct. The list was for informational purposes. Commissioners only deny
subdivision applications when they do not conform to county ordinances. Those ordinances mainly deal with septic system requirements and public road access issues. From now on, those land subdivisions will appear on the meeting agenda and will be read at the meeting. Properties are typically subdivided ahead of a land sale. The subdivisions provide insight into the rapidly
changing landscape of Fayette County. At Thursday’s meeting, the agenda included the following subdivisions: • Karen Miller Hale ET AL 114.36 acres into two tracts: Tract-1 55 acres, Tract-2 59.35 acres, located on Carmine Cemetery Road, Precinct 2; • Arie Funk 72.37 acres into two tracts: Tract-1 47.37+/- acres, Tract-2 25.1+/- acres, located on FM 159, Precinct 1; • Mark A. Rodgers 81.064 acres into
two tracts: Tract-1 10.669 acres, Tract -2 70.395 acres, located on Waldeck Road, Precinct 2; • Bruce Speckles 54.5 acres into two tracts: Tract-1 36.3 acres, Tract-2 18.176 acres, located on Meiners Road, Precinct 2, Fayette County • Sherie Knape 76.05 acres into two tractsL Tract-1 38+/- acres, Tract-2 38.05 acres located on Roitsch Road and FM 3171, Precinct 4; • Karen Miller Hale Et AI 115 acres into three tracts: Tract-1 25 acres, Tract-2 40 acres and Tract-3 49.35 acres, located on Carmine Cemetery Road, Precinct 2.
Sludge Plan Creating Quite a Stir Locally Continued from front he was authorized to speak with the media about the Denali’s plans in Fayette County. The consultant spoke at length about the company’s operations, the contents of the sewage sludge being considered, and the company’s plans to mitigate possible environmental impacts. Then on Friday afternoon, the consultant called back and asked that we not publish his name because he has not been able to secure a formal agreement with Denali for his services. The permit application was posted for public reading last week at the Fayette Public Library in La Grange. In it, Denali specified an application rate of slightly over seven dry tons per acre per year, based on
crop needs and the the amount of nitrogen and other plant nutrients in the sludge. Included in the permit application were test results from the sludge, which is produced at Austin’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Plant. Those results indicate a high quality product. Concentrations of toxic metals like arsenic and selenium fell far below the maximum acceptable levels established by TCEQ. The Hornsby Bend plant also produces the City of Austin’s trademarked garden product Dillo Dirt, marketed as a soil conditioner for ‘unrestricted use,’ meaning it can be applied to gardens producing vegetables for human consumption. Dillo Dirt was famously applied at Austin’s Zilker Park days ahead of the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival. A torren-
tial rain storm during that year’s festival turned the park grounds into a stinky, soupy mud pit. Many festival-goers later reported rashes on their arms and legs, illness and other medical issues, though Austin officials later repudiated any links to Dillo Dirt. The material Denali wants to bring to Fayette County is classified as ‘Class B Sewage Sludge.’ According to state rules, Class A sludge may not contain high levels of pathogens like fecal coliform bacteria and salmonella. Like Dillo Dirt, Class A Sludge may be marketed for unrestricted use. Class B sludge is not tested for pathogens. TCEQ rules place restrictions on where Class B sludge may be applied. The rules also prohibit grazing livestock or cutting hay until 30 days after the sludge was applied.
A map of the property included in Denali’s permit application shows the area where the sludge would be applied. It covers much of the property, about two-thirds of which lies within the floodplain. The map also shows ‘buffer zones’ where no application would take place, including around a creek that runs through the property, water wells, and a few low spots that periodically collect water. The map shows no buffer zone along the Colorado River, which marks the southern boundary of the property. The Record attempted to contact the City of Austin Water Utility to ask why its sludge could not be beneficially used somewhere in Travis County. They had not responded at the time of this publication.
Granville Strong at 100 Continued from front awarded to the oldest living person in the town of Rockport. Friends and family also attended. The tradition of the goldheaded Boston Post Cane and its presentation to the oldest resident of a New England town was conceived by a publisher of the Boston Post daily with an eye toward increasing circulation in 1909. On Aug. 2, 1909, Edwin A. Grozier, publisher of the Boston Post, forwarded to the selectmen in 700 New England towns a gold-headed ebony cane with the request that it be presented with the compliments of the Boston Post to the oldest male citizen of the town, to be used by him as long as he lived, or until he moved from the town. The custom was expanded to include a community’s oldest woman in 1930.
When asked the secret of living to 100 years of age, for a newspaper story in the Camden Herald Granville replied he didn’t know, but would let people know in a year. The recipient keeps a plaque honoring him/her and the cane is on display at Town Hall with the recipient’s name. “I think this is just lovely,” his daughter told the Camden Herald. “I really don’t know how he’s going to react. You never really know.” Blyberg said the one thing she remembers about her father is his integrity. “He will love this,” she told the Camden Herald. “He’s a people person. He still tells a story better than anyone.” His ability to tell a good story and make it sparkle earned him the title of official raconteur or Head Raccoon at his golf club.

Lady Leps Cap Dominant Softball Season With Second State Championship in Last Three Years By JEFF WICK The Fayette County Record
AUSTIN – Great expectations. Exceptional results. Long before this season began the members of the La Grange softball team said only one achievement would satisfy them – a state title. And on a steamy Saturday morning in front of a sell-out crowd of 1,278 in Austin, a supremely talented Lady Leps team capped off a dominating season with a 8-1 victory over Paris North Lamar in the 4A state title game. This Lady Leps team joins the 2014 and 2005 teams as state softball champs from La Grange. Only three schools have won more softball titles. From the beginning the Lady Leps dedicated this 2016 season
to the memory of La Grange freshmen Emily Fritsch, a friend and former teammate of many of these players, who died in class of a brain aneurysm in October. These Lady Leps were also playing for personal redemption after missing out on the state tournament last year after winning it all in 2014. “This is what we came here to do and we got it done. I don’t think anybody else had a chance. We had so much to play for and the kids were so dedicated,” said La Grange head coach Art Behrend, who turned 58 Saturday. The team sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Behrend minutes after they won the title. “The kids were so determined to get it done. Of course it doesn’t hurt that we have a lot of
talent too.” That talent was on full display throughout a season that saw the Lady Leps climb to No. 1 in the national rankings by USA Today led by a five senior starters (Missy Zoch, Riley Fisbeck, Amber Loehr, Blake-Ann Fritsch and Briana Angel) who have all inked college athletic scholarships. Overall the Lady Leps finished with a 40-2 record and none of those 40 was bigger than Saturday’s. When the final out, a soft liner to shallow right field, was gloved by second baseman Angel it touched off a wild celebration at midfield. Team Dedicated Title Season to Fritsch’s Memory By JEFF WICK
The Fayette County Record
The La Grange softball team had an angel on its side. Amidst the La Grange softball team’s run to a state title, the memory of Emily Fritsch was always there. Before the season the La Grange softball team dedicated this season to the memory of Fritsch, a freshman who died in class of a brain aneurysm in October. Fritsch, a star softball player in her own right, was a friend and former teammate of many of the Lady Leps. All season, the players wore patches on the sleeve of their jerseys of an ‘E’ with angel wings. They held a home run derby to raise money for a scholarship fund in her honor. “Before games, during games, we were always saying, “Let’s do this for E. Let’s do
this for Emily,” said La Grange shortstop Blake-Ann Fritsch. Saturday, as the members of the Lady Leps were getting their state championship medal, Emily’s parents Lee and Phyllis Fritsch, were invited onto the field and presented a medal in
Emily’s honor. “There was no doubt we wanted to do that because they and Emily were a part of this. We felt Emily all the time,” La Grange head coach Art Behrend said. See Fritsch, next page

Lady Leps Realize Their Goal of Winning 2016 State Title Continued from Page B1 state championship trophy and gold medals. “This is the best feeling ever, honestly,” said La Grange senior pitcher Zoch, who despite arm pain, threw a complete game three-hitter in Thursday’s 7-1 state semifinal victory over Brownwood and then a complete game four-hitter with nine strikeouts in the title game. While Zoch was mowing down the high-powered offenses of Brownwood and North Lamar, the Lady Leps lineup was building big early leads. In both the state semifinal and title games, the Lady Leps got first inning home runs to give them early leads they would never lose. “Big time players come up big in big games,” said Behrend. Against Brownwood, it was senior Loehr who crushed a three-run first inning homer over the left field wall. The other leading hitter for the Lady Leps in that semifinal was lead-off hitter Blake-Ann Fritsch, who had three hits and two RBIs. In Saturday’s title game, the first inning homer was a tworun shot to right center by Angel. “I was just thinking base hit. I was just looking for a good pitch,” Angel said. She later added a triple and drove in four total in the game, earning the title game MVP trophy. Angel’s triple came in a sixrun fourth inning for the Lady Leps that really broke the championship game open. The other big hit of that frame was a triple by Darby Fitzpatrick that turned into an unofficial inside-the-park homer on a throwing error by North Lamar. Three runs ended up coming home on that play. “She hadn’t run that far all year,” laughed Behrend of Fitzpatrick’s lap around the bases. Not the fastest player, once Fitzpatrick gets on base she is usually pinch-run for. “It was really exciting,” Fitzpatrick said. “I don’t think I’ve slid in like six years but I did it and I didn’t get hurt.” Along with Fitzpatrick’s heroics, fellow juniors Shelby Dixon and Abby Gage each had two hits in the title game and junior catcher Hatti Moore scored two runs. That’s all strong evidence that just because this La Grange team is senior-laden, it doesn’t mean that can’t be dominant again next year. “The seniors are going to be missed. We’ve grown up together,” Fitzpatrick said. “But I really do believe in us. If we work hard we can come back next year.” Time will tell about the future, but the past and present certainly is something to admire. What a legacy the Class of 2016 leaves behind. Since this year’s seniors were freshmen the Lady Leps have gone a combined 153-10. “You enjoy them while you have them. I’ve been coaching them since they were in seventh grade. They are ultra-competitive. Nobody outworks them. They are going to be great individuals, they will be great citizens. That’s where the real champions are,” Behrend said. “We wanted to go out with a bang,” Blake-Ann Fritsch said.
Fritsch Family Special Part of Run to the Title Continued from Page B1 “The girls really used that to their advantage to never lose focus and never take anything for granted and to work hard every day because they didn’t want to let her down,” Behrend said. “I just want to thank the community for supporting us,” Lee said to a group of reporters on the field. “I’m just overwhelmed and so proud of these girls that they pulled it through. “They did it for E.”
With an ocean of purple-clad supporters behind them, the members of the Lady Leps say a prayer prior to the start of Saturday’s championship game. There was a sell-out Photo by Grace-Anne Matocha crowd of 1,278 at the stadium, about two-thirds of them La Grange supporters.

Briana Angel was a starter for the Lady Leps all four years in high school. Her last game in purple and gold was one of her best as she was crowned the title game MVP in a postgame awards ceremony on the field Saturday. “It feels great,” Angel said of the award. “But we all contributed so much.” Angel gave La Grange a 2-0 lead with a first inning homer in Saturday’s title game. Then she hit a triple which was a big part of La Grange’s six-run fourth inning. In all she drove in four of La Grange’s eight runs in the title game.

“Briana’s been a big time player ever since she was a freshman,” La Grange head coach Art Behrend said. Angel’s older sister Alyssa was also part of the 2014 La Grange state title team. She went on to play at UT her freshman
year in college. Earlier in her high school career Briana had also verbally committed to play for the Lady Longhorns, but has changed her plans. Briana now heads to the University of TexasArlington where she has accepted a scholarship to play softball.

Delay No Problem for La Grange
Thursday’s state semifinal game started three-and-a-half hours late because of rain in Austin. No problem for the Lady Leps. “The weather today might bother everybody else, but it’s not going to bother us. They could start us at three in the morning and we’ll show up,” said La Grange head coach Art Behrend. “It was actually nice to get to sleep in longer, eat some more food. It didn’t affect us,” said La Grange first baseman Amber Loehr, who hit a three-run first inning homer in the semifinal.
Fisbeck’s Last Softball Game
Of the five senior members on the La Grange softball team four are going on to play college softball. So there are plenty more days on the diamond for Missy Zoch, Briana Angel, Blake-Ann Fritsch and Amber Loehr. But Riley Fisbeck is going to the University of Texas to play volleyball. So Saturday marked her final competitive softball game ever. “This was my last softball game ever. It’s very bittersweet,” Fisbeck said. “But I can’t think of any other way I’d want to end it.” A very busy week at the state softball tournament was made extra busy for Fisbeck, who moved into her UT dorm just days before the state tournament and got ready to start summer college classes. “I had a lot on my mind, but I stayed focused,” Fisbeck said. Fisbeck was a four-year starter for the Lady Leps softball team. Her first three years were at first base, but she moved to third this season and was named to the all-state tournament team at that position. As a freshman she helped lead the La Grange volleyball team to a state runner-up finish. With two state gold medals (2014 and 2016 in softball), one silver (2012 in volleyball) and one bronze (2013 in softball) she’s one of the most decorated athletes male or female in La Grange history.
Offensive Onslaught
The La Grange offense combined for 15 runs and 21 hits over the course of the state tournament against a pair of pitcher who will one day be college stars. Brownwood freshman Chyanne Ellett is already getting interest from at least one Big 12 school while North Lamar’s sophomore Reagan Richardson has already verbally committed to play for Texas State “You throw hard and we’re going to hit you hard,” said La Grange head coach Art Behrend.
Happy 58th Birthday to Behrend
La Grange head coach Art Behrend turned 58 Saturday and the team sang him “Happy Birthday” on the field after the victory. “Pretty good birthday present,” Behrend said after the title game. “The girls said, ‘Aren’t you 68?’” In his six years coaching the Lady Leps softball team, Behrend has never lost a district game and has three state tournament appearances. – By Jeff Wick For information on a special congratulatory softball section coming in Friday’s paper contact ad director Becky Weise at 968-3155.

Kantorei Performs at Casino Hall The Historic Casino Hall is living up to its mission of bringing the citizens of our community together. Saturday night the St. John’s School Acappella Choir, Kantorei performed to a full house and a standing ovation. Many members of the community were able to enjoy this free concert brought to them by the First Presbyterian Church’s Linda Smalley Memorial Concert Series. While coming to hear this wonderful choir, residents of the county were able to see the inside of the newly restored Historic Casino Hall which has a long and varied history in La Grange. This hall will host many more activities such as the original founders had en-
Saturday’s performance at the Casino Hall.
visaged when it was constructed in 1881. The 40 member Kantorei Choir has a history of touring internationally, having performed concert tours in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada and many other coun-

Flatonia’s Comeback Kids Do It Again! The Comeback Kids from Flatonia are alive and well – and headed to the state tournament. For the third time this postseason, Flatonia fought back in a three game series after losing the first game. After losing Game 1 of their regional final to Big Sandy 4-0 Thursday and only getting one hit, Flatonia needed to win both ends of a doubleheader Saturday against the Wildcats to advance, and the Bulldogs did it. Thanks to a three-hitter from pitcher Kaddin Mikulik the Bulldogs beat Big Sandy 4-1 in Game 2 Saturday and then in Game 3, pitcher Easton Migl tossed a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Bulldogs won 7-0 . Casen Novak and Matthew Kozelsky had two hits in each of Saturday’s games and Braydon Mica drove in five total runs Saturday. Now the defending state champion Bulldogs (27-5) advance to the state tournament, where there is no margin for error. Flatonia plays Bosqueville (31-1) at noon Wednesday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock in the 2A state semifinal. The winner of that game plays the winner of the Beckville (32-1-1)/ Stamford (22-5) in the state title
game Thursday at 9 a.m. back at Dell Diamond. Flatonia is the only one of these four teams that was at the state tourney last year. Bosqueville will likely start unbeaten senior pitcher Zack Mazza on the mound in the semifinal. He is 12-0.
