City to celebrate 200th in 2023

The City of Fayetteville was officially established as a town in 1823, and City leaders will celebrate that 200th anniversary in 2023.

Mayor Ed Johnson and City Manager Ray Gibson have formed a committee including Main Street Fayetteville staff and other City personnel, who are planning a few smaller events that will lead up to a larger celebration weekend in the spring. Throughout the year, the City will also celebrate the bicentennial in other creative ways.

More details will be shared soon on the City’s website and social media as well as through collaboration with local media. In the meantime, anyone with ideas and questions may contact Main Street Program + Events Manager Jillian Mason: jmason@ fayetteville-ga.gov.

Mayor Ed Johnson (center) is pictured on the cover along with Robbie Ashley (left) and Cal Cross, who make up the Half & Half Morning Show on The Bear 92.5 FM. The radio station is conveniently located on the Historic Courthouse Square here in Downtown Fayetteville.

Several years ago, Mayor Johnson was invited to participate periodically in live, on-air segments of the morning show, but then COVID-19 slowed things down. This summer, those segments resumed, and the Mayor can be heard live on the Fourth Thursday of each month in the 8 a.m. news slot.

Archived “Mayor on The Bear” segments are also found on the City’s website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

City adopts new five-year Comprehensive Plan

The Fayetteville City Council has adopted the Comprehensive Plan 2022 Update, which is an important guidance document based on a vision for future growth and development within the City of Fayetteville. The plan addresses land use, housing, economic development, transportation, parks and recreation, and natural resources, with a strong focus on how land is used, developed, and/or conserved.

The City’s current Comprehensive Plan was adopted in 2017 and since that time, Fayetteville has experienced significant population growth

and economic development. The 2022 Update builds on the previous plan and provides a five-year update as required by Georgia’s local planning rules centered around reevaluating key elements.

A downloadable version of the Comprehensive Plan 2022 Update is available at Fayetteville-GA.gov/222.

Further updates to the Comprehensive Plan will be made to accommodate the City’s new Unified Development Ordinance, which is expected to be adopted in the coming months.
