Taste of Fayette rained out, rescheduled The annual Taste of Fayette foodie festival set for June 9 was rained out, but it is now reset for Sunday, June 23, at the Historic Fayette County Courthouse lawn. This will be the 18th annual Taste of Fayette, and it is the second one to take place on the old courthouse grounds. Running from noon to 4 p.m., several food vendors from all over Fayette County will compete for “Finest Taste”, “Finest Treat”, and “Most Amazing Booth”. “This is Main Street Fayetteville’s biggest fund raiser of the year, and we love the feedback we get from the community,” said Main Street Program Manager Joyce Waits. “People love Taste of Fayette. City Finance Department earns 13th national Distinguished Budget Award The City of Fayetteville Finance Department has for the 13th consecutive year received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association. This represents the highest honor in municipal budget reporting. While earning this award has become routine for the department, it is a significant accomplishment requiring the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting and reporting. The City’s budget must be proven through its reporting to effectively serve as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device. Budget
documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the criteria within those categories. When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individuals or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to the Finance Department. Deputy Finance Director Carleetha Taldmadge presented the good news to City leaders at the June 6 City Council meeting. “We thank you for the work you’ve done on this,” City Manager Ray Gibson told Talmadge. “You’ve done a
lot of work and put a lot of hours into this.” Mayor Ed Johnson echoed Gibson’s sentiments. “We thank your entire Finance staff as well as the other staff who keep things in order,” Johnson said. There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
New Lane Brown Gazebo is open on Courthouse Square The New Lane Brown Gazebo was built and opened with little fanfare early this month, replacing the old structure that served as a Fayetteville landmark for about a quarter of a century. Local company The Amish Place arranged for the newer, slightly larger gazebo to be built in a way that better accommodates wheelchairs and people with special mobility needs, and the structure itself seats more people than the previous one did. It was built with pressure-treated yellow pine.

It’s grass-cutting season again in Fayetteville Keeping Fayetteville beautiful is a community-wide effort that happens every day, and it starts with community members keeping up their own properties, whether residential, commercial or institutional. This time of year, the basic and mundane chore of keeping grass cut becomes a top priority for the City of Fayetteville, where personnel are tasked not only with enforcing rules on property owners but also on keeping up properties that fall under the City’s own jurisdiction. Code Enforcement Officers Terry Windley and Vernon Ruth deal with grass cutting issues most days, whether in response to constituent complaints or personal observation as they drive around the city. According to Fayetteville Code 5834, uncut grass officially becomes a “nuisance” when it reaches a height of 12 inches or more, at which point it can become a risk to public health, especially when this high grass is allowed to grow near homes, businesses and other habitable structures. Vermin, reptiles and other animals tend to find high grasses welcoming, which can be detrimental to humans. According to Fayetteville Code Enforcement records, officers conducted a total of 786 grass cutting inspections just between the period of May 1 to June 14. That includes initial inspections, follow-up inspections, warnings and citations. While those inspection numbers may seem high, Windley says city residents have gotten better over the last couple of years at complying with the grass cutting ordinance. The City itself looks after around 45 miles of right of way, which makes for a huge grass-cutting challenge. The Fayetteville Public Works crew, in addition to their many other maintenance obligations, handles the mowing, trimming and blowing. It’s a non-stop task all the way into fall.

City parks are perfect for relaxing and recreation Did you know the City of Fayetteville has six parks open to the public? Looking for a nice place to take a walk, play on a playground, ride a mountain bike or even catch a fish? Parks featuring all of this and more are located right here in Fayetteville. If you are trying to keep the kids happy, you may want to start with Church Street Park, which features new playground equipment, including four basketball goals, swings, slides and even a gazebo donated from the set of the 2017 film “SpiderMan: Homecoming”, which was filmed at nearby Pinewood Atlanta Studios. The Ridge Nature Area at the end of Burch Road offers miles and miles of trails, most of which make for great hiking and mountain biking. Veterans Park on Redwine Road features a gentle walking path as well as monumental tributes to our nation’s military veterans. It is located next to the Fayette County-run Kiwanis Park. Three lesser-known parks include Dickson Springs Park on Helen Sams Parkway,

Tommy James & The Shondells in concert June 29 Tommy James’ road to superstardom began when a nightclub DJ in Pittsburgh discovered a twoyear-old record by “The Shondells” and played it at his weekend dances. The crowd response was so overwhelmingly positive that radio deejays started spinning it and an enterprising record distributor bootlegged it, selling 80,000 copies in ten days. By May of 1966 “Hanky Panky” was the number one record in Pittsburgh and Tommy James was a sensation. Tommy James & The Shondells will rock Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Ampitheater in Downtown Fayetteville on Saturday night, June 29. Gates open at 7. A Pittsburgh promoter tracked Tommy down at his home in Niles, Michigan and urged him to “come on down!” Unable to put the original group back together, Tommy hired a hot P-burgh R&B bar band to replace them. Two weeks later he signed a record deal with Roulette Records. The label, in turn, put their promotion team to work on “Hanky Panky” and made it the summer smash of ‘66. Thus began one of the longest strings
of nonstop hits in recording industry history! James in his career has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and his 32 Billboard Hot 100 Chart hits include “Mony Mony”, “Crimson & Clover”, “Crystal Blue Persuasion”, “Sweet Cherry Wine”, and “I Think We’re Alone Now.” These hits not only made him famous, but they were also big hits for other artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Santana, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Prince, Kelly Clarkson, REM, Tom Jones, Cher and more. James’ critically acclaimed autobiography Me, the Mob and the Music is on Rolling Stone’s Top 25 Best

James also now hosts his own SIRIUS/XM Radio show called “Gettin’ Together with Tommy James”, which airs on Sundays 5-8 p.m. on the 60s on 6 channel. Now entering his 51st year in the music business, James has just released a new album “Alive”. The new version of his hit “I Think We’re Alone Now” was released on June 17. CCM star Amy Grant comes to Fayetteville July 13 Conventional wisdom has it that Amy Grant put Contemporary Christian Music on the map, becoming the first CCM artist to have a platinum record, the first to hit No. 1 on the Pop charts, and the first to perform at the GRAMMY Awards. Since then, Grant has been strumming her way through a thirty-plus year adventure as a singer-songwriter, author, television host, and speaker. Amy Grant will headline an evening of music at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground Amphitheater in Downtown Fayetteville on Saturday, July 13. Gates open at 7 p.m. Early on, Grant’s iconic voice became instantly recognizable in both the Christian and pop worlds. Over the years, she has sold more than 30 million albums world-wide, including three multi-platinum, six platinum, and four gold. Her chart performance has also been consistent throughout her career, boasting six No. 1 hits, 10 “Top 40” Pop singles, 17 “Top 40” Adult Contemporary tracks and multiple Contemporary Christian chart-toppers. In recognition of such success, Grant has received 6 GRAMMY Awards and 26 Dove Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a star on the Music City Walk of Fame. Additionally, she was most recently inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. Stepping out from behind her guitar, Grant found herself hosting the NBC prime time series “Three Wishes” in 2005, bringing her into millions of living rooms across America every Friday night. The people she met and stories she collected proved to be great inspiration for creating new music and even writing a book. Two years later, Grant’s first book, Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far, was published. She continues to share her stories with audiences all over the country as a keynote and inspirational speaker. In April 2016, Grant celebrated the 25th anniversary of her first pop hit, “Baby Baby”, with a worldwide
release of a new version of the song featuring pop sensation and fellow Capitol Music Group recording artist Tori Kelly. Growing her wildly popular Christmas brand, Grant then released “Tennessee Christmas” in October 2016, her first all-new Christmas album in nearly twenty years. She looks forward to national arena symphony Christmas tours each November and December with longtime friend Michael W. Smith, as well as an annual Christmas residency at the world-famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with country superstar 15 - June 2019
husband Vince Gill. Grant resides with her family in Nashville, Tennessee, and is widely known for her philanthropy and tireless involvement in local causes and charitable organizations. Her own organization, The Helping Hands Foundation, has afforded her the opportunity to identify needs around her and the resources to help meet them, which has proven to be the sweetest reward of all.
