This sensuous sculpture represents Ariadne being carried upon the back of a collared panther, presumably on her way to meet Dionysus for their marriage ceremony. Her exquisitely sculpted body has slipped into a very relaxed almost natural pose and the marble has been fashioned with meticulous and admirable technique, making her skin shine, soft and splendidly polished. She appears completely nude, save for the crown of vine leaves adorning her attractive head, symbolizing her future relationship to the god of wine. The composition is based upon the classical revival masterpiece of the German sculptor Johann Joachim Dannecker (1758-1841) and this particular artwork is made by the Florentine sculptor Ferdinando Vichi, most likely in the years following Dannecker’s death, when this subject became quite popular.
