Our Patron EDUENRICH

Enriching Society through Education and Entrepreneurship

The Education Enrichment Foundation (EduEnrich) is the parent organization of KITE and is licensed under Section 42 of the Companies Ordinance 1984 by the Securities and Exchange Commission Pakistan in December 2011, is a not-for-profit organization run by a team of dedicated and committed professionals who are passionate about creating and maturing innovative solutions for local problems. The foundation is focused on enhancing the standard of living and global employability for young Pakistanis via a high-quality, industrydriven, globally and locally relevant education. EduEnrich is driven by the urgent need to address the lack of attention towards science and technology, an absence of structured career guidance, poorly trained graduates and rising unemployment. EduEnrich’s solution is providing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education, with a strong entrepreneurship and business administration component, that is professionally applicable. It hopes to develop a culture of curiosity and creativity by inculcating an interest in the humanities and social sciences. EduEnrich is committed to education, entrepreneurship, ethics, industry and innovation. In summer 2011, one of the EduEnrich founders established a Robotics Lab in an attempt to kindle a passion for science in children between the ages of 6 to 18 years. KITE, EduEnrich’s flagship institution, hosts a lego competition for the Robotics Lab every year. EduEnrich believes that intervention at all levels of society are required to ensure that young people are given stimulus, engagement, guidance and employment to stay out of negative

activities, and to direct their energies towards productive and income generating possibilities. The EduEnrich model is focused on successful education-industry integrated models present in nearly-developed economies such as Malaysia and aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry in Pakistan. These models have successfully developed institutes that educate their youth and have established track records in providing employment opportunities that cater to the demands of global and local industries, while confidently following a moral code with national loyalty. At the same time, they are only a few years more advanced than Pakistan. The Founders of EduEnrich are expatriates and residents of Karachi, which is the most populous city in Pakistan and has the highest proportion of young people in the country. Having assessed the dismal state of affairs of Pakistani youth juxtaposed with the Founders’ personal successes, they decided to give back to the city where they were born and raised. All Founders harbor a firm belief that each individual must contribute to improve the society around them. EduEnrich’s Board of Governors has extensive business acumen, professional expertise and experience in education delivery and management. These individuals determine our investment and fundraising policies and approve our annual budget. EduEnrich receives its funding from various donors. Resources are raised through personal solicitation and fundraising events. Pakistani expatriates are strong supporters of The Education Enrichment Foundation.

President’s Message Afaque Riaz Ahmed Founder and President The Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship (KITE) Before coming to Pakistan to explore new entrepreneurial opportunities and reunite with family, Afaque occupied several senior engineering and sales roles in the United States and Canada. In September 2003, he founded Fonebooth Networks, Inc, a telecommunications company based in Silicon Valley. The philosophy and business model for this venture eventually became the basis for a similar business, the Breezecom Group of Companies, with companies based in Malaysia, Pakistan and the UAE which he founded in 2007. In 2011, Afaque’s passion for science and education drove him to establish the Robotics Labs, an interactive platform designed to inculcate a love for science and computer programming in young Pakistanis. This became the founding philosophy of Afaque’s first higher education venture, KITE in 2012/2013. In his spare time, Afaque listens to old ghazals and qawwalis, watches movies and organizes parties for friends and family. Afaque holds an MBA (Finance) from McGill University, Montreal, Canada and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, U.S.A. He has also completed various professional development courses and executive programs at Singularity University, Stanford University and at The University of California-San Diego.

I believe that one of the core principles to create a better, vibrant, democratic and a more prosperous Pakistan is a 4-year college educated Pakistani with competitive skill sets which will also ensure economic survival and progress in an increasingly globally intertwined landscape. This belief has become firmer in the last twelve years since I moved back to Pakistan, after having lived in the US for 13 years, and while going through the process of setting up multiple successful tech-enabled startups in Pakistan. Not waiting for the government or some messiah to fix this, I decided to take this initiative as a private, not-for-profit venture with the help of friends and family during my prime years so I can see the mission through its completion. This initiative is KITE– Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship. KITE’s core vision is to create a critical mass of well-rounded citizens with a “can-do” attitude who thrive in multidimensional, local and global societies. How will that help? It has become the need of the hour to have graduates who are locally relevant and internationally competitive. Such strong willed and powerful individuals will not only be able to improve the current societal setup but will also possess the necessary skills to become entrepreneurs. And being an entrepreneur doesn’t really mean you have to be the next Steve Jobs. Start simple and start small. Being a seasoned entrepreneur myself, I am well-aware of the importance of taking ownership— giving your dream all that you have knowing full well that you can fail. I aim to provide each student with a seed— an idea that is compatible with that student’s skill-set which can eventually take the form of a well-rooted tree—a business that will benefit not only the student but also all of society and the economy as a whole. Experience is probably always the best teacher. What better way to ensure global competitiveness in our students than to send them abroad so they can learn for themselves? KITE’s recent affiliation with UT Austin will ensure that our students will be able to go abroad for exchange programs and network with the right people. But international exposure must go hand-in-hand with local relevance. The Career Office at KITE provides students with intense career guidance sessions to ensure all students utilize their own unique key strengths when deciding what career paths to pursue. The outcome of these sessions will also help the Career Office to decide which partner companies would best suit each candidate for work placement in the summer. Education at KITE is not just about theoretical concepts that students will memorize and forget; it will include live sessions with professionals, full-time internships, exciting ideas and start-up ventures, and an experience that will take a life-time to forget!

School of Business The School of Business at the Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship incorporates the rigor of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), with the critical thinking skills associated with social sciences, and rounds it off with an applied education about the fundamentals of business. Consistent with a mission to produce a critical mass of citizens with a “can-do” attitude, graduates from the School of Business will be able to hit the ground running upon completing the four year undergraduate program. As the country’s first truly “tech-centric” business school, the School of Business incorporates the three fundamental pillars of the ecosystem at KITE. By combining a robust knowledge of computing with the fundamentals of business and the social sciences, the curriculum at the School of Business is truly inter-disciplinary. Since computing is a ubiquitous tool in the world of business, and given the strong linkages with industry that KITE possesses, students at the School of Business will focus on the application of knowledge throughout their undergraduate years. Ultimately, the School of Business aims to train entrepreneurs – individuals who can identify business problems, create ideas, and then execute those ideas. The Entrepreneurship program at the School of Business is designed to help you evaluate and tackle problems like a businessperson. Entrepreneurship is a powerful combination of critical and creative thought processes, and a positive, “can-do” attitude that guarantees the execution and success of ideas. The program will teach you how to identify and critically evaluate business issues, create solutions for those problems, and then execute those solutions. That is the essence of entrepreneurship. At KITE, we believe that entrepreneurs are made, not taught. That is why, after four years of an immersive and hands-on experience in the KITE ecosystem, you will be ready to take control of your ideas and execute them. This means that you will be well-positioned to realizing your business idea once you graduate, or expanding an existing business globally, or becoming that highly sought after business executive, who can provide solutions to industries across business. After all, the best business executives actually embody what entrepreneurship is all about, and equating entrepreneurship to business ownership is just a common misconception.
